WHAT IS GUMS?
"Griffith University Medicine Society is dedicated to ensuring students have the best possible
medical school experience as physicians in training"
Focusing on wellbeing, academic support, advocacy and social aspects of medical school life, GUMS aims to ensure everyone
feels connected to their medical school.
The Griffith University Medicine Society (GUMS) was established in 2005 and currently represents over 700 medical students.
It is a respected student organisation that provides support through its key academic, advocacy, wellbeing and social
portfolios. Membership is open to all medical students enrolled in Griffith University.
Through GUMS there exists student representation on the school and education committees to promote the rights and
welfare of medical students at Griffith University. We also have representation on the Australian Medical Students
Association (AMSA), which is the national body representing medical students in Australia. With a growing number of events
and activities every year, our presence within both the local community and the national medical student community is
continuing to expand.
In 2017, our new executive is committed to assisting students meet their academic goals, provide opportunities for personal
and professional growth, advocate for medical students locally and nationally and create a social and enjoyable atmosphere
for study. These goals are met through the various events and functions that GUMS holds throughout the year, including
social, academic and wellbeing events.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Thank you for considering partnering with GUMS in 2017. Griffith University Medicine Society has gone from strength to
strength over the past ten years and this is in no small part thanks to our faithful sponsors who have continued to support
us as we have continued to grow.
Over the past three years, GUMS has taken significant steps to improve our professional image, organisation and financial
management. This has included renovating our social media and online presences to create seamless ticket and merchandise
sales, instituting an improved membership scheme, and developing a clear and consistent approach to our marketing and
publications. This allows the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to be easily accessible and utilised by our students
and alumni.
We have also continued to reach out by involving clinicians working within the field into our academic and wellbeing
portfolios. Academic titleholders are expected to have an increasing role in our academic program, building on their interest
and involvement in events such as Careers Night and Formative OSCEs. We plan to engage with clinicians in the field through
networking events under our new women’s portfolio. We hope that this allows us to present even great opportunities for
you as sponsors to be reaching the medical profession on a wider level. Through each of our portfolios we hope to deliver a
diverse range of academic, social and professional events that appeal to students across all year levels.
We are thrilled to present you with this prospectus, and hope you can see our vision for where GUMS is headed for 2017
and into the future. It would be a pleasure to speak with you and answer any questions that you may have about how we
can best meet your needs. We depend on your support to continue the valuable work that we do to support every medical
student at Griffith, and hope that you are as excited as we are to continue this well into the future.
Kind Regards
Kirsty Whitmore

Anatomy labs often involve practice quizzes at the end of each session, where students must identify pins attached to the
body parts. GUMS are working to produce a pre-numbered, anatomy friendly notepad to help answer the quizzes in an
organised and easy manner. This will be a new initiative of the GUMS Merchandise Team in 2017, who have responded
previous requests to produce a product like this.

CLINICAL SKILLS PACKS
In order for students to grasp clinical skills in class they need to do countless hours of practise outside of university. GUMS
