The past year has been one of evolution and growth. When you look at Hennepin Healthcare System today you will notice many changes, notably the launch of our new brand and marketing campaign. This provided an updated website for the Foundation with enhanced fundraising tools, storytelling and navigating. Please visit www.hennepinhealthcare.org/foundation and let us know what you think.

Another visible upgrade is our new Clinic & Specialty Center in downtown Minneapolis that opened in March. We celebrated many donor gifts pledged in 2017 for naming rights in this new building, most notably the Delta Dental Oral Health Center on the third floor. On the skyway level is our first ever donor recognition display celebrating over a thousand annual donors which will be updated each year.

Generosity happens at Hennepin Healthcare because of you and this report is meant to celebrate our accomplishments made in partnership with you, our staff, board members, and community partners. These relationships helped 2017 be one of our most successful fundraising years so far, raising nearly $22M to support the needs of our patients, programs, and providers.

Highlights of Accomplishments in 2017• Establishment of the Scott F. Davies Endowed Chair in the

Department of Internal Medicine and the M. Thomas Stillman Endowed Chair of Education and Scholarship.

• Assist teen parents with education and healthy parenting.

• Expand primary care in Dentistry and Family Medicine Residency Programs.

• Provide EMS consultations to rural communities.

• Continue outreach with flu vaccinations and colorectal cancer screenings.

• Support the award winning Next Step Program for its groundbreaking work to keep young adults safe from repeated acts of violence.

• Expand membership in our Young Professionals Group and Hennepin Honorary Alumni.

• Light Up the Night gala was the first event to be held in the newly renovated Minneapolis Armory, entertaining 900 guests with our story and attracting $669,000 in revenue.

Part of our continued growth includes a change in leadership. Many of you had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Ford Bell, DVM. Earlier this year, Ford made the decision to retire and leave his position as President at Hennepin Healthcare Foundation. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Ford for his professional leadership and vision. He brought so much to the Foundation over the last three years and he truly elevated the Foundation to a new level.

Hennepin Healthcare’s Teen HOPE program helped 105 teen parents earn their high school diploma or GED in 2017. This program connects pregnant and parenting teens with public health case management services focused on helping them complete their educational goals, deliver healthy babies, delay subsequent pregnancies, develop responsive parenting skills, and achieve self-sufficiency. Funding for Teen HOPE was supported through a contract with Hennepin County, the Minneapolis Health Department and grants from The Pohlad Foundation and The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota.

Grants from $5,000-$25,000 are used to enhance the patient and family experience, purchase supplies and equipment, or benefit the work of staff. Grant work must be completed in a calendar year. The following awards were made at the end of 2016 an implemented during 2017.

Small Grants Big Impact

MICU early mobility ($11,000)The purchase of a TotaLift chair for the Medical Intensive Care Unit increased the amount of patients who could get out of a hospital bed by 6% during their care.

q $100,589 in small grants was awarded to 13 PROGRAMS.

Centering Pregnancy at Whittier Clinic ($2,182)Updated teaching materials and supplies allow for interactive educational activities in group meetings and provided a nice upgrade to the classroom, making it more appealing for patients.

Adult Psychiatry Clinic Procedure Room ($19,000)Converted existing office space into an additional procedure room for clients. This new lab space within the clinic, increased compliance with lab work. As a result, the program was able to provide phlebotomy services for 433 patients and an additional 540 medical injections.

Tools for Breastfeeding ($7,500)Lactating mothers throughout the hospital are now able to store their breast milk. Mother’s without insurance are able to receive a free breast pump. The Breastfeeding Clinic is able to provide infant carriers for mothers of multiple babies to keep their infant close and secure, and promote attachment and breastfeeding. Grant purchased two refrigerators with carts, ten breast pumps and 100+ infant carriers.

Knapp Rehab Patient Stories and Redesign ($16,000)New furniture, a computer, and framed photography of patients and their stories were long awaited improvements to the lounge in Knapp Rehab where patients and families spent an extensive amount of time. In addition, an electronic therapy schedule board was purchased to enhance patient flow and reduce wait times.

Dermatology Equipment ($11,500)A variety of equipment was purchased to advance the care in the Dermatology Department including lumio scopes, microscropes, iPads, hyfrecators, and microneedle pens and tips. Television monitors for same day surgery post-operative rooms ($1,500) Enhancements to MICU Waiting Room ($5,000)Purchased reclining chairs and a refrigerator to provide a more comfortable experience for families who wish to be near loved ones who are critically ill.

Advanced Life Support Training Simulation Monitors ($7,900)Paramedic program was able to purchase two monitors that attach to simulation models. This new equipment was used to prepare paramedic students for certification examinations and was brought offsite for advanced skill training. This provided a notable improvement to the paramedic program and the 47 students who graduated in 2017.

Patient Education in the Radiology Waiting Room ($5,000) Patients now receive information prior their procedure while in the waiting room to enhance health literacy and reduce stress. iPads on carts have been loaded with two educational websites. The Radiologyinfo.org site is where all of the procedure education is found. And PBSkids.org is used for pediatric exams as a positive distraction for children.

Music for Inpatient Psychiatry Patients ($4,000)Eight iPods, Bluetooth speakers, and iTunes radio service now offer a selection of music for patient receiving care in inpatient psychiatry. Psychiatric patients often suffer from troubling symptoms which can include hearing voices, severe anxiety, hopelessness and psychosis. Music in any form can often provide temporary relief from these troubling symptoms. The opportunity for both individual and area music has greatly enhanced the patient experience.

Transplant Team Center Monitor ($2,573)Transplant Clinic was able to pilot a clinic flow project with the purchase of technology. A new monitor and dot system provided noted reduction in number of calls to the front desk to determine if patients had arrived and were ready to be seen. Improvements were seen in both provider efficiency and the reduction in the time patients waited to see their doctor. This pilot is now being implemented across many clinics.

Child passenger safety supplies ($7,434)Supported the purchase of 20 convertible car seats, 10 infant only seats, 20 E-Z On harnesses and a portable car seat teaching station for Pediatrics.

The award winning Next Steps program continued its groundbreaking work to keep youth and young adults safe from repeated acts of violence. Over 170 participants were helped after staff connected with youth admitted for violent trauma. This hospital-based youth violence intervention partnership is between Hennepin Healthcare and City of Minneapolis. Our Emergency Department, Spiritual Care, Social Services and Security leaders worked with staff from the City of Minneapolis Department of Health, Minneapolis Police Department and Office of the Mayor to create the program in 2016.

Girl Scout Cadettes from Troup 25250 stopped by to donate 100 gift bags with toys for our pediatric patients. Half of the bags provided a small stuffed animal, crayons, and stickers for toddlers while the other bags contains small toys and games for older kids.
