The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award was established in 1999, the International Year of the Older Person.

The Award highlights the achievements of older Territorians and fosters excellence and creativity in the art of portraiture by artists who are residents of the Northern Territory. In 2017, for the first time, the Award will open in Alice Springs and then travel to Darwin.

Through this Art Award, the Northern Territory Government celebrates the significant and valuable contributions that senior Territorians make to our community.

ELIGIBILITY1. The Award is open to artists aged 17 years and

over who are residents of the Northern Territory. 2. Collaborative works are acceptable provided the

name of each collaborating artist is clearly stated on the entry form.

3. Entry forms, including two statements of up to 100 words each, and an image of the work (min. 300 dpi jpg) must be received by 5.00 pm CST, Friday 3 March 2017.

4. Completed artworks must be delivered to the Araluen Arts Centre by 4.00 pm CST, Friday 24 March 2017.

PRIZE AWARDS6. The $7000 Acquisition Award is provided in

exchange for the winning artwork, which will be selected by a panel of judges and acquired by the Northern Territory Government for the Araluen Art Collection.

7. Artworks that are not available for sale will not be eligible for the Acquisition Award.

8. Any artwork priced above the value of the Acquisition Award ($7000) will only be considered for the Acquisition Award if the entrant has specifically provided their acknowledgement and acceptance by signing the relevant statement on the entry form.

9. The $2000 Second Prize and $500 Third Prize non-acquisitive awards will also be selected by the panel of judges.

10. The $1000 People’s Choice Prize (a non-acquisitive award) will be decided by public ballot. The winner of the People’s Choice Prize will be the artist whose work attracts the highest number of votes. The winning artist will be announced in the week following the close of the exhibition in Darwin, and payment will follow.

11. Prizes will be presented to the winning artist or their authorised representative. Payment of prize monies will be in accordance with Northern Territory Government protocols and timelines.

12. A panel of judges will be announced closer to the exhibition date.

13. Winners (except People’s Choice Prize) will be announced at the opening of the Award at the Araluen Arts Centre on 7 April 2017.

14. No correspondence will be entered into concerning the judges’ decisions.

SELECTION CRITERIA15. The organiser reserves the right not to exhibit any

work.16. The use of appropriate archival materials may be

taken into account by the judges of the Acquisition Award. Any works deemed to need

excessive ongoing maintenance will not be considered for the Acquisition Award.

THE WORK17. Portraits must be an original work by the entrant

and completed no more than two years prior to the exhibition.

18. Only one entry per artist is permitted. 19. Portraits previously submitted to the Portrait of a

Senior Territorian Art Award will not be accepted. This applies to previously submitted portraits that have been reworked also.

20. Portraits must be of one or more living senior Territorians aged 60 years or over, who permanently reside in the Northern Territory.

21. Portraits must be painted in oils, acrylic, watercolour, pastels, or mixed media (i.e. a combination of these media). Portraits comprising other media may be deemed ineligible. Photographic works, including digital images and prints, are ineligible. See point 19 for media constraints specific to the Acquisition Award.

22. All works must be a portrait of a person or a representation of a person painted substantially from life (at least one live sitting).

23. The subject must be known to the artist, aware of the artist’s intention and have consented to their likeness being entered into the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award.

24. The work must be two dimensional in nature and suitable for wall installation.

25. The work must be complete when submitted.26. The work must be ready for installation, including

framing and stretching but excluding any hanging devices. A copy of the completed entry form must be attached to the back of the work.

27. The entrant must provide an accurate statement of up to 100 words about the person who is the subject of their work and up to 100 words about the artist and their arts practice. These statements may be used in a catalogue (should one be produced), on exhibition panels, and in promotional material.

28. All sales of accepted entries that are available for sale will be managed by the Araluen Arts Centre. A commission applies: 40% (artists registered for GST) or 44% (artists not registered for GST).

COPYRIGHT & REPRODUCTION29. The artist warrants that the work is original and

that it does not infringe any copyright, moral rights, intellectual property rights or other rights of any third party.

30. The artist remains the copyright owner of the work and will be acknowledged as the creator of the work at all times.

31. The artist grants to the Araluen Arts Centre a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide licence to freely use, reproduce, publish and communicate the entered work for publicity, promotional and educational purposes associated with the Award

in print and digital media. The winning works may also be reproduced to promote future Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Awards.

32. The work will be documented by the Araluen Arts Centre for archival and educational purposes.

INSURANCE33. The artist is responsible for insurance of the work

while it is in transit to the Araluen Arts Centre. The Araluen Arts Centre accepts no responsibility for late or misdirected entries.

FREIGHT34. Freight to the exhibition at Araluen Arts Centre is

the responsibility of the artist. Freight from the Darwin exhibition venue for purchased works is the responsibility of the buyer. Freight for unsold works by artists who are not residents of Darwin is the responsibility of Araluen Arts Centre.

DELIVERY & COLLECTION OF WORK35. The deadline for delivery of works is Friday 24

March 2017 at 4.00 pm.

36. Works should be delivered Wednesday 15 – Friday 24 March 2017 between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm to the Araluen Arts Centre, 61 Larapinta Drive, Alice Springs, NT 0870.

37. All works will be held for the duration of the Alice Springs and Darwin exhibitions and will not be released under any circumstances.

38. All sold works must be collected by the buyer or their agent from the Darwin venue. Unsold works by artists who are residents of Darwin must be collected by the artist or their agent. Unsold works by artists who are not residents of Darwin will be returned to the artist by the Araluen Arts Centre, if the artist is unable to collect the work. Buyers and artists will be advised of collection dates and pick-up details.

39. At the time of publication of this entry form, it is projected that artworks will be released for collection in August 2017.
