Pirates notebook: Rookie Angel Sanchez joins bullpen

ROB BIERTEMPFEL | Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, 3:36 p.m.

When right-handed reliever Angel Sanchez found out late Tuesday night he was heading to the majors for the first time to join the Pirates, it triggered a series of very short conversations.

The first was with Triple-A Indianapolis manager Andy Barkett, who phoned Sanchez with the news.

“I thought he might be kidding me,” Sanchez said. “I was so surprised, I had nothing to say.”

Sanchez next called his wife and his aunt in the Dominican Republic.

“At first, I couldn't talk because of the emotion of the moment,” Sanchez said. “I was talking (small) talk like, ‘Hey, I'm going to the big leagues.' Nothing else would come out of my mouth.”

Sanchez joined the Pirates on Wednesday to fill a multi-inning role in the bullpen. Righty Edgar Santana was optioned back to Indy.

In 39 outings with Indy, Sanchez went 3-5 with one save and a 3.74 ERA. This is his first full season as a relief pitcher.

“He's gotten better as the year's gone on,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “The arm's live. The stuff (and) the pitch skills are in a good place. It's a fresh arm and an arm that can give us some volume.

“He's a guy we thought of a lot two years ago. He's dealt with his own set of adversity and gotten back. We feel this is a good opportunity to take a look at him.”

Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Sanchez was raised by his aunt.

“I (consider) her like a mom,” he said.

Sanchez credits his late grandmother Rosa for keeping him focused on reaching the big leagues.

“I play for my grandma,” Sanchez said. “She believed in me, and she always told me, ‘If you like to play baseball, just go play. If you don't like school, don't leave school because it will teach you things that will last forever.' I told her I was going to make it for her. I'm dedicating today to her, because she is the reason I am here.”

Sanchez, 27, was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010, and three years later was traded to the Miami Marlins.

The Pirates claimed him off waivers from the Chicago White Sox in July 2014. He missed the entire 2016 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

“It was tough,” Sanchez said of his rehab. “After that, my mentality changed. I wanted to work hard to come back stronger. All the hard work has paid off.”

APOLOGIES TO ANDY

With less than two weeks left in the season, Indianapolis (70-58) is leading the International League West. It hasn't been easy, though, with the Pirates raiding Indy's bullpen lately for fresh arms.

How thin is Indy's roster? On Sunday, catcher John Bormann pitched the final two innings of a 4-3 loss against Syracuse.

That led Hurdle to place a call to Barkett.

“I thanked him for their efforts,” Hurdle said. “And I apologized. All we keep doing is grabbing guys, and they keep figuring things out. They've found ways to win games, so I'm proud of their efforts. The coaching staff down there is doing a great job, and the players continue to show up.”

PLANET OF THE ACHES

Francisco Cervelli (left wrist inflammation) hit on the field and has been catching bullpen sessions without problem.

“He continues to check off boxes, preparing to be game-ready,” head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said.

Cervelli is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday.

Tomczyk remains optimistic Gregory Polanco (strained left hamstring) will be able to play before the end of the season. Polanco is able to throw and hit on the field and has been running in the exercise pool.

George Kontos (strained right groin) has been shut down for a couple of days. He's expected to resume throwing Friday. Tests showed he has a low-grade sprain, and he likely will be activated Aug. 30.

Joaquin Benoit (left knee inflammation) is battling the same injury that put him on the DL in June. He'll be reevaluated Friday.

Wade LeBlanc (strained left quad) threw a bullpen Wednesday. He's eligible to be activated Monday.

Austin Meadows (oblique tightness) has resumed full baseball activities at Indianapolis.

Josh Harrison's walk-off home run in 10th ruins Rich Hill's no-hit bid

Rob Biertempfel

Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison celebrates his walk-off homer with teammates to break up a no-hitter during the 10th inning against the Dodgers Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at PNC Park.

One immaculate swing by Josh Harrison on Wednesday erased nine innings of near-perfection by Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Rich Hill.

Harrison's home run in the 10th inning was the only hit Hill allowed in the game. It lifted the Pirates to a deliciously improbable 1-0 victory.

"It's insane how baseball works," said Pirates starter Trevor Williams, who tossed eight shutout innings. "Baseball sucks at times. Baseball's weird. It's designed to break your heart."

Williams paused and grinned.

Page 16: 2017 Pittsburgh Pirates - MLB.commlb.mlb.com/documents/1/4/8/250344148/Reds_Pittsburgh_Pirates.pdf2017 Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 61-66 (4th NL-Central) Manager: Clint Hurdle Current

"I'm so glad we hit that walk-off homer."

Harrison is the first player in MLB history to break up a no-hitter in extra innings with a walk-off home run.

Over the first eight innings, Hill racked up 10 strikeouts and did not allow a baserunner. His bid for the 24th perfect game in MLB history was shattered in the ninth inning, when third baseman Logan Forsythe booted Jordy Mercer's grounder for an error.

The perfect game was gone, but Hill still had not allowed a hit.

"You kinda felt we would scratch one (run) through, and it was kind of meant to happen," Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes said. "Looks like it wasn't, though. It doesn't feel that great, not being able to scratch one in for Richie."

Leading off the 10th, Harrison jacked an 88 mph fastball over the left-field wall. Curtis Granderson leaped and reached into the stands, but came up empty.

"When I hit it, I knew I didn't get it all, but I knew I got enough," Harrison said. "I knew it was a ball Granderson could get to. I was just hoping he didn't rob it. When I saw him come down on the ground, I felt like his reaction was, 'Aw, man, I just missed it.' "

In the fourth inning, Harrison tried to break up what was then a perfect game with a bunt. He popped it up, and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez made a fine sliding catch.

In the 10th, Harrison wanted something bigger than a dink single.

"It was my fourth time seeing (Hill), and his stuff wasn't as sharp as it was in my first three at-bats," Harrison said. "I felt I had him synced up pretty good, I got a pitch and didn't miss it."

Harrison was hunting a fastball — no surprise, considering 10 of the 11 pitches he saw from Hill were four-seamers. The last one was down in the zone but caught the middle of the plate.

"It was a bad pitch," Hill said. "Late in the game like that, you need to make better pitches."

Williams was not unhittable, but he matched zeros with Hill for eight innings. Williams gave up seven hits and four walks and struck out five.

"Williams pitched like a guy who's got way more time in than he's got," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He pitched like an experienced starter."

Williams is in the midst of his first full season in the majors. Hill, a 13-year veteran, has appeared in 239 games, including 112 starts. He has pitched for eight big league teams and the independent Long Island Ducks.

"I know the Cliff Notes of the Rich Hill story," Hurdle said before the game. "It's the kind of story that can get made into a movie someday."

Hill was sharp from the start, working fast and controlling the strike zone. In the sixth, Hill quick-pitched Chris Stewart, who tapped into a ground out. As he jogged to the dugout, Stewart barked at Hill.

Second baseman Chase Utley went airborne to rob Josh Bell of a single in the eighth.

The game might've had a Hollywood ending for Hill if not for the excellence of Williams. The right-hander threw a career-high 114 pitches and was aided by spectacular defensive plays by Harrison and Mercer.

"It's crazy," Hurdle said. "We got one hit. What did they leave on, 11? It shows the beauty of the game, the things you can't draw up beforehand."

The Dodgers stranded 11 men on base by going 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

"I'm sad for Rich," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "You look at opportunities that a player has to have a chance at a no-hitter, and he gave himself every opportunity. I'm very excited for Rich because he threw the ball so well tonight but disappointed that he didn't get that no-hitter."

Max Moroff trades Pirates fan swag for river ball

ADAM BITTNER

There’s at least one guy associated with the Pirates who’s not afraid to make a big trade.

Infielder Max Moroff on Wednesday acquired the ball he hit into the Allegheny River for a home run against the St. Louis Cardinals last week in a swap with Pirates fan Max Hartman of Point Breeze.

For his part of the deal, Moroff hooked up Hartman with field passes for batting practice and tickets to the game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as a signed bat with a personalized note.

“It says ‘nice dive,’ ” Hartman said, a reference to the performative plunge he took to snag the ball as it floated in the river.

Pirates reliver Angel Sanchez takes part in batting practice Wednesday at PNC Park.

Hartman and a group of people had tied their boats up outside the park Friday evening in anticipation of a fireworks show after the game, which the Pirates lost, 11-10. When the eighth-inning shot landed in the river, he said he only stopped for a moment to make sure his phone wasn’t in his pocket before taking a flying leap into the water.

“I just did it. I wasn’t thinking about anything,” Hartman said. “It was a full sprint into a dive.”

He held onto the ball until Wednesday, when he met Moroff on the field at PNC Park for batting practice to complete the transaction.

Hartman, a firefighter, also threw in his Oakland engine company’s T-shirt to sweeten the pot for Moroff.

“It was pretty cool because we’re both named Max. And it’s my birthday,” Hartman, now 29, said of getting to meet the big-leaguer.

Pirates 'optimistic' Gregory Polanco will play again this season; Francisco Cervelli close to return

Page 17: 2017 Pittsburgh Pirates - MLB.commlb.mlb.com/documents/1/4/8/250344148/Reds_Pittsburgh_Pirates.pdf2017 Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 61-66 (4th NL-Central) Manager: Clint Hurdle Current

STEPHEN J. NESBITT

The Pirates are “optimistic” right fielder Gregory Polanco, currently on the 10-day disabled list rehabbing from his third left hamstring strain this year, will play again before the season ends, according to head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk.

Polanco and catcher Francisco Cervelli (left wrist) participated in batting practice prior to the Pirates game Wednesday at PNC Park. Polanco, who is batting .255, has resumed light baseball activities, including hitting and long toss, but his running so far is limited to the SwimEx, an exercise pool. The Pirates are 9-17 this season with Polanco on the disabled list.

Cervelli appears to be nearing a return. He has taken batting practice and faced velocity with a pitching machine in the batting cage. He also has caught bullpens. Tomczyk planned to meet with Cervelli and manager Clint Hurdle Wednesday to determine next steps and decide whether a rehab assignment will be necessary. Cervelli is eligible to be reinstated Thursday.

“He continues to check boxes off to prepare him to be game-ready,” Tomczyk said.

Pirates fan Max Hartman of Point Breeze, right, traded the home run ball he pulled out of the Allegheny River last week with infielder Max Moroff.

Max Moroff trades Pirates fan swag for river ball

Relievers George Kontos (groin) and Joaquin Benoit (left knee) both were placed on the disabled list Tuesday and won’t pick up a baseball until they are reevaluated Friday in Cincinnati. Doctors examined Kontos and confirmed a low-grade strain, Tomczyk said, so the Pirates are hopeful he’ll only be out 10 days. Benoit’s tendonitis is a recurrence from his disabled-list stint in early June with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Reliever Wade LeBlanc (left quad) is “progressing nicely,” Tomczyk said. The veteran left-hander threw a bullpen session Wednesday. He is eligible to return to the roster Monday.

Austin Meadows, the Pirates’ top prospect, was out of the Class AAA Indianapolis starting lineup for five days because of minor oblique tightness. The training staff was simply being cautious, Tomczyk said. Meadows entered as a pinch-runner Tuesday night.

Pirates add bullpen arm, feel-good story by calling up Angel Sanchez

STEPHEN J. NESBITT

Angel Sanchez was en route to his apartment Tuesday night when Class AAA Indianapolis manager Andy Barkett phoned. His first words were, “Sanchy, I’ve got great news for you.” The news rendered Sanchez, a 27-year-old reliever, rather speechless. He sputtered a response to Barkett to ensure the manager wasn’t joking. “No,” Barkett replied. “You’re going to the show.”

Before Sanchez packed his suitcase for an early-morning flight to Pittsburgh, where he joined the Pirates for his first day in the majors, he had two phone calls. The first was to his wife, Delia Verdugo, the second to his aunt, Bienvenida Suarez, at home in Tenares, Dominican Republic. Suarez is the woman who raised Sanchez, the one he still refers to as “Mom” today.

At first, Sanchez said, “I couldn’t talk.” In his mind, he retraced the seven years since signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. He may have been a month away from a September promotion with the Pirates in 2015 before he underwent Tommy John surgery. With his aunt waiting on the other end of the line, Sanchez finally said, “I’m going to the big leagues.”

“That was the only thing I could say at the moment,” he recalled Wednesday at PNC Park, standing in front of his locker and a crisp No. 59 jersey in the Pirates clubhouse.

Pirates fan Max Hartman of Point Breeze, right, traded the home run ball he pulled out of the Allegheny River last week with infielder Max Moroff.

The message was received.

“[Suarez] said she couldn’t sleep all night,” Sanchez said, smiling. “She wanted to tell everybody in the neighborhood, but everybody was sleeping at that time.”

When Suarez was a baby, his mother, unable to take care of the young child, gave the boy to his grandmother, Rosa Suarez. Together, Sanchez’s grandmother and aunts looked after him. At times when the baseball journey was rough, Sanchez said, he was motived by his grandmother, who died in 2013. “I play all this for my grandma,” he said.

“My grandma always told me she believed in me,” Sanchez said. “She told me, ‘If you like to play baseball, go play baseball. If you don’t like school, put school away, but don’t leave school, because its the only thing that's going to last forever for you. Baseball is going to be momentary.’ I told her I was going to make it for her. She is the reason why I’m here.”

Sanchez admitted he was surprised the Pirates needed another reliever after calling up three earlier Tuesday. He recalled thinking, “Whoa, what’s going on in the big leagues right now?” He didn’t expect to be asked to replace Edgar Santana, who was optioned to Indianapolis.

Sanchez had success in the low minors but bounced between four organizations before the Pirates claimed him off waivers July 31, 2014. He allowed three runs over 12 innings in the Arizona Fall League that fall. Sanchez turned heads the next season, posting a 2.69 ERA in 23 starts for Class AA Altoona and Indianapolis before surgery. After missing the 2016 season, Sanchez returned as a reliever this year and had a 3.74 ERA in 55⅓ innings.

“Finally, it paid off,” Sanchez said. “All the hard work.”

Joe Starkey: Rich Hill handles his historic, spirit-crushing defeat with class

JOE STARKEY

Baseball, man.

What an oddly torturous game.

“It’s insane how baseball works,” said Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams. “Baseball [stinks] at times. Baseball is weird. It’s designed to break your heart.”

Page 18: 2017 Pittsburgh Pirates - MLB.commlb.mlb.com/documents/1/4/8/250344148/Reds_Pittsburgh_Pirates.pdf2017 Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 61-66 (4th NL-Central) Manager: Clint Hurdle Current

This was just after Williams tossed eight shutout innings Wednesday night against the best team in baseball, only to be saddled with a no-decision — and he wasn’t even talking about himself.

Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison is hoisted by teammates after hitting a walk-off home run against the Dodgers in the 10th inning Wednesday at PNC Park. Harrison's home run ended Rich Hill's no-hitter and gave the Pirates a walk-off victory.

He was talking about the other guy — Dodgers starter Rich Hill, who, according to Elias Sports Bureau, had just become the first pitcher since Lefty Leifield of the 1906 Pirates to lose a game with nine or more innings pitched, one or fewer hits and no walks. I’m not sure if Joaquin Benoit was in the bullpen that night, but that’s beside the point.

Point being this: Hill nearly pulled a Harvey Haddix before sustaining one of the hardest-luck losses you will ever see.

True, nobody will ever suffer a loss like the late Haddix did on May 26, 1959. He threw 12 perfect innings that night, after all, and pitchers these days consider it a success merely to survive half that many innings while giving up three earned runs.

Hill, however, is one of the few who could relate to how Haddix must have felt after losing on an unearned run in the 13th.

Haddix’s line: 12⅔ innings, one hit, no earned runs, eight strikeouts, one walk.

Hill’s line: nine innings, one hit, one earned run, 10 strikeouts, no walks. He threw 99 pitches, 75 of them strikes and not many in the 90s.

A 37-year-old lefty, Hill carried a perfect game into the ninth and a no-hitter into the 10th when Josh Harrison lined a home run into the left-field bleachers, just past the glove of a leaping Curtis Granderson. It was the first time in baseball history that a walk-off home run broke up a no-hitter.

It was an oasis moment for the Pirates, a cheerful respite in the middle of what is shaping up to be a brutal late summer.

It was a blip for the Dodgers, who dropped all the way to 89-36.

But you had to feel for Hill.

Legend has it that Haddix was so distressed after his historic loss that he roamed the streets of Milwaukee until dawn. I didn’t get the feeling Hill was going that route. I don’t think you’ll find him staggering past Butcher and The Rye at 6 a.m.

In fact, he seemed oddly at peace with the situation, even though it came just a year after he was pulled from a seven-inning perfect game against the Marlins because of a blister.

I wondered if Hill had ever heard of Haddix’s tale — he said no — and then suggested he seemed to be taking only the positive out of what could be considered a soul-crushing loss.

“Absolutely,” he said. “We have something bigger than any individual here that’s going on. That’s something we all realize and have to understand. Tomorrow’s another day and a big day to come back and to win the series.”

He made sure to add, “They played a great game, too.”

It truly was a great game. Easily one of the best in PNC Park history. I had a plan for it going in — something about the Pirates’ championship window closing — but I mentioned to colleague Gene Collier that I’d switch up if “somebody throws a no-hitter.” Remind me to never say that again.

Things got really tense in the late innings, as Williams nearly matched Hill pitch for pitch.

In the top of the eighth, Jordy Mercer prevented a Dodgers run with a leaping grab of Logan Forsythe’s line drive, one that ended a 10-pitch at-bat. The crowd of 19,859 — at least those not wearing Dodger blue — roared. But Chase Utley outdid Mercer about five minutes later, when he somehow stretched his 38-year-old carcass to full capacity to snag Josh Bell’s liner in the hole between first and second.

“Just to see him flying through the air and have the image burned in my head is pretty cool,” Hill said with a laugh.

Hill struck out Sean Rodriguez on a questionable pitch to end the eighth, but he probably deserved a break after a curveball that appeared to hit the edge was called a ball earlier in the at-bat. At that point, it looked like Hill was destined to become the first pitcher to throw a perfect game against the Pirates.

“It felt like it was kinda meant to happen,” said Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes.

But that was before Forsythe bobbled a Mercer grounder to lead off the ninth, ruining the perfect game. Hill handled that moment with class, as well, and later called Forsythe “our leader.”

This all set the stage for Harrison, who has a flair for the dramatic. Remember when he broke up Justin Verlander no-hit bid? On a 2-1 count, Hill threw him an 88 mph fastball down the middle, low in the zone — an offering Harrison “didn’t want to miss.”

“Bad pitch,” Hill said, matter-of-factly.

It might have been his only bad pitch of the night. And likely one he’ll never forget.

Baseball, man.

Josh Harrison ends Rich Hill's no-hitter vs. Pirates with walk-off homer in 10th inning

STEPHEN J. NESBITT

Curtis Granderson crashed into the left-field wall and crumpled to the warning track, his glove empty. Rich Hill, the Los Angeles Dodgers starter, walked slowly off the PNC Park pitcher’s mound. To his right, the Pirates encircled home plate and constructed a runway to welcome Josh Harrison, whose 10th-inning blast had dashed a scoreless deadlock and Hill’s no-hitter.

“I knew I didn’t get it all,” Harrison said after a 1-0 win Wednesday, “but I knew I got enough.”

Until Harrison’s leadoff, walk-off home run on an 88 mph fastball, Hill’s 99th pitch, the Los Angeles left-hander had secured 27 outs. He wasn’t in line for a win, as rookie Trevor Williams had matched his zeros before handing the baseball to the Pirates bullpen. Hill’s perfect-game bid was scotched in the ninth when third baseman Logan Forsythe booted a ground ball.

Page 19: 2017 Pittsburgh Pirates - MLB.commlb.mlb.com/documents/1/4/8/250344148/Reds_Pittsburgh_Pirates.pdf2017 Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 61-66 (4th NL-Central) Manager: Clint Hurdle Current

There was a reason Hill’s hunt rang historic. The Dodgers’ only other perfect game was thrown by Sandy Koufax. Forsythe’s folly marked the first time in Major League history a bid for perfection was broken up by a ninth-inning error. And Harrison’s solo shot, his 16th homer this season, was the first time a no-hitter was snapped in extra innings by a home run.

Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill, a 37-year-old lefty, carried a no-hitter into the 10th inning Wednesday against the Pirates — until it all ended with Josh Harrison's walk-off home run.

It only figured the game-winner was smashed by Harrison, who earlier in the game had attempted to end the no-no by bunting for a base hit. Harrison was the hitter, too, who ended Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander’s no-hit bid with one out in the ninth inning May 19, 2012.

After a water-cooler shower soaked Harrison after the game, a familiar refrain could be heard in the home dugout. See, a tradition has taken root this season. Whenever the Pirates strike their first hit of each game, catcher Chris Stewart hollers, “Nobody no-hits the Pirates.” On Wednesday, they waited and waited. Finally, Harrison cued the chorus with a walk-off whack.

“[The first hit] just happened to come in the 10th inning,” he said.

Hill struck out 10. He is the first pitcher since the Pirates’ Lefty Leifield in 1906 to lose a start of nine or more innings in which he had allowed one or fewer hits and zero walks, per Elias Sports Bureau.

“Rich Hill pitched a great game. He threw a no-hitter,” Williams said. “It’s insane how baseball works. Baseball [stinks] at times. Baseball is weird. It’s designed to break your heart.”

Williams was neither perfect nor heartbroken. He tossed eight scoreless innings in his longest start this season, allowing seven hits and four walks, one intentional. He hit one batter and struck out five. After a career-high 114 pitches, Williams watched from the dugout, intermittently doing shoulder exercises, as relievers Felipe Rivero and Juan Nicasio finished the job.

Manager Clint Hurdle described Williams’ outing as gritty, only that didn’t quite suffice. “This would definitely be capitalized,” Hurdle said. “When you text, doesn’t that mean it’s more important, when you put everything in capitals? I would capitalize ‘GRIT,’ in this case.”

Williams described dueling Hill like they were boxers dancing in the ring. “It’s fun to square up with the guy,” he said. “You swing at the guy. He swings back at you. You guys keep swinging to see who doesn’t dodge that one time.” Williams laughed. “It’s unfortunate for him that it happened in the 10th inning. I still can’t wrap my mind around that outing and what he did.”

Before the game, Hurdle was asked how familiar he was with Hill’s story. Hurdle knew a “cliff notes” version, he said. In 2015, after a decade as a journeyman shuttling between the majors and minors, Hill landed with the Long Island Ducks, an independent-league baseball club. That winter, Hill signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Athletics, and his career was reborn.

Hill was traded to the Dodgers at the trade deadline last year and posted a 1.83 ERA in eight regular-season starts, including one where he was lifted after seven perfect innings — the first time in Major League history a manager pulled a pitcher so close to a perfect game. Hill had been hounded by blisters on his fingers. They sent him to the disabled list again this spring.

Once the offseason commenced — the Dodgers bowed out after the National League Championship Series — Hill, at 37, re-signed on a three-year, $48 million free agent contract.

“That’s the kind of story that could get made into a movie someday,” Hurdle said.

Ten innings later, the Pirates ruined the perfect-game scene in the script.

“It’s still a pretty good part of the movie,” Hurdle countered. “I can’t imagine there's any dishonor walking off the field, giving up one run on one hit.”

Hill bedeviled batters from the outset Wednesday. Starling Marte was the first victim, whiffing on one of Hill’s trademark 75 mph curveballs for the Pirates’ first out. The next batter, Harrison, went down swinging at a fastball at the letters and off the plate away. Hill’s pitch count was at nine after one inning, 22 after two, 34 after three, 39 after four and 54 after five.

The Dodgers defense offered Hill its aid in the rare occasions he needed it. When Harrison bunted in the fourth, Adrian Gonzalez, the aging first baseman, lurched forward and made a sliding catch on the infield grass.

While the baseball world stirred, tuning in to catch Hill’s pursuit of perfection, Williams wasn’t wilting either. He discovered there to be relatively smooth sailing through the first three innings. After back-to-back singles to start the fourth, Williams retired Utley and Forsythe. Austin Barnes was intentionally walked, loading the bases, and Hill lined out to shortstop.

Double plays cut short the next two innings for Williams. He stranded two runners on base in the seventh, then saved his best work for the eighth. Curtis Granderson drew a leadoff walk. Yasiel Puig was hit by pitch with one out. Chasey Utley flied out on pitch No. 6, and Forsythe followed with a 10-pitch fistfight. It ended with a scorched liner that Jordy Mercer leaped to snare.

Utley answered immediately. The 38-year-old second baseman dived to his left and robbed Josh Bell of a line-drive single to start the eighth. The last at-bat of the innings was lengthy and contentious. Hill got two quick strikes on Sean Rodriguez, who then watched three balls. Hill’s seventh offering hummed at 88 mph. Rodriguez believed it was inside. The umpire did not. The perfect game was alive through 24 outs. So were the Pirates.

“We had no hits and were still tied through nine,” Harrison said. “We had something going for us.”

In he ninth, Mercer ended the perfect game.

In the 10th, Harrison ended the ballgame.

“Crazy,” Hurdle said. “We got one hit.”
