Nov 2017 November sees the switch on of the Doddington Christmas Lights. The lights will be turned on at 4.30pm Saturday 25th November. The Christmas Fair gets under way from 1pm and there will be outside entertainment for all ages as the lights get switched on. The event is organised by the Doddington Christmas Lights Committee, now in its fourth year, with the aim to provide the village with some festive cheer. All sponsors will be advertised on a board at Clock Tower over the Christmas period. The commitee are always on the lookout for new ideas for fundraising and for anyone who would like to help in anyway. Doddington Diary November 2017

Editors Page

Dear Residents of Doddington,

Welcome to the first full edition of Doddington Diary!

The Editorial Team would like to thank everyone who has paid for an advert, without which the Diary would not exist, all the village groups who have submitted a report making the Diary something interesting to read and the overall support from the village including the volunteers who have delivered this Diary to your door. We are only a small part of a massive team!

November brings shorter days, cooler weather and a time for reflection on the past year, one such poignant event is St Mary’s Church Remembrance service on Sunday 12th November. If you haven’t attended before, you will find a large congregation including many of the children of the village, paying their respects as part of the Scouting and Girl Guiding movement. The service is a wonderful exam-ple of village togetherness, remembering those who have sacrificed themselves to secure our freedom.During the year we have seen many examples of village life at its best; the new planting at the top of Benwick Road, the beautiful planters in front of the Clock Tower and numerous litter picks from the newly formed Street Pride group. All examples of volunteers working to make Doddington a superb village to live in……even one or two of the heavily criticised Virgin Media workers found tea and coffee being offered to them from hospitable residents!

The Doddington Diary Team would love to hear your village news, whether you are part of a group or an individual working to keep village life great. If you have anything to report, please email [email protected], we would really appreciate your input to make your village magazine informative and enjoyable.

Best wishes

Doddington & Villages Under 5s Group

Doddington & Villages Under 5s Group is a friendly and welcoming playgroup based at the Doddington Methodist Hall (behind the clock tower). We would love for you to come along to our sessions - we welcome all children from 0 to 5 years old. While the little ones play, it’s a great opportunity for you to have a cuppa and get to know other local parents and carers.

Our sessions cost £1.50 per family which includes a snack, squash and free tea or coffee. Your first session is free of charge! We run throughout school holidays, every Tuesday and Friday from 10:00 – 11:30.

The committee have been busy arranging our annual Christmas Party where we’re expecting a very special visitor for the children! During the sessions approaching Christmas we’re planning lots of festive crafts and activities and hope to see lots of new members joining us! We also hold special party sessions for Easter and Halloween and a special Summer outing.

Doddington Village Sports and Carnival Monthly Update

October sees the start of a new year for the Doddington Village Sports and Carnival committee. The AGM was held on 5th October at which the current officers were re-elected and members confirmed. We are always looking for more volunteers to join the committee so if you are interested in helping out please feel free to come along to the monthly meetings or contact us. The first meeting, following the AGM, took place on 12th October, where we sat down and discussed the plan for fundraising events for the forthcoming year. The first event for us to prepare for is the arrival of Santa in December! Plans are underway to ensure his visit goes smoothly. Please keep an eye out on social media, here in the Doddington Diary and around the village over the coming weeks for full details of Santa’s visit so you don’t miss him. The biggest decision the committee have to make every year is the theme for the annual Carnival parade, which for those of you who are new to the village takes place on the first Saturday in July. It’s never too early to think about carnival day so we are pleased to announce, slightly earlier than usual, that the theme for the 2018 Carnival will be ‘Best of British’. With this theme the possibilities are endless so get your thinking caps on and we cannot wait to see what ideas you come up with! To keep up to date on all things Carnival, like our Facebook page Doddington Village Sports and Carnival committee or visit our website www.doddingtoncarnival.co.uk

JUNE BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Think twice before jumping into water this summer Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is? Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridge-shire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer. But there is only so much we can do and we’re calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety. Some things to remember: You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc. Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim

Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck. If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk . Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Call 01480 444500 for enquiries.

Doddington Parish CouncilStreet LightingFollowing numerous discussions and meetings with Fenland DC over the likely costs that parishes were being asked to find to replace the majority of its street lights, Doddington has appointed its own street lighting contractor to report on the condition and likely costs of improving its light stock. A detailed survey has recently taken place and we are currently awaiting their report.

Local Highway Improvement SchemesIn conjunction with Cambridge CC, speed limits on roads into the village have been reduced and flashing speed warning signs and white gates have been erected on the three roads into the village. The Parish Council has secured a grant to enable the dangerous surface of the Benwick Road footpath to be repaired near Askham House. Discussions have taken place with local residents in the Ingles Lane, Harvest Close area to consider whether arrangements can be made to improve the safety of pedestrians using this road. A traffic survey has taken place and detailed discussion will be taking place with County Council highway engineers to ascertain options that may be open to us.

Mobile Speed SignYou may have seen the new mobile speed sign around the village over the last few months. The sign detects your speed and if you are driving within the speed limits you will receive a thank you message. The Parish Council regularly move the sign and collects the data, a summary of this can be found at https://doddingtonparishcouncil.com/traffic-news/

New Cemetery in Benwick RoadThe Parish Council is seeking quotations to lay the internal roads within the grounds.

Village MaintenanceThe bus shelter in High Street has been rebuilt following its partial demolition when hit by a lorry.A new Parish noticeboard has been erected on the wall of the Church Rooms. In conjunction with Wimblington PC, we are seeking quotations to survey some parish owned buildings for asbestos.

Doddington Recreation Committee. In the past year the Pavilion & Ground has seen many improvements with the addi-tion of increased loft insulation and new windows and doors which have resulted in a very comfortable building. A new baby change facility has been fitted, along with new energy efficient hand dryers and push button taps. Work has continued on the field to make it a fantastic playing surface for cricket and football, not forgetting the planting of 30 trees along the footpath which will hopefully grow and enhance the natural surroundings. The bowling green has now been converted into a fenced in grass area perfect for childen’s parties.

The Pavilion is available for hire, for sports, children’s parties, meetings and social gatherings. The building and grounds are here for the use of the community, please contact us for more information or to book your event.

We also have our own fundraising events. Our next monthly Bingo is Thursday 9th November, 7.30pm, everyone welcome! Watch out for our special Family Bingo events, the next one is Halloween Bingo on 28th October at 10am.

Doddington Village HallWe held a retirement presentation afternoon for our outgoing treasurer Ged Bishop with many familiar faces past & present attending. Our resident show comedian ‘Tick’ Few took the microphone & after many a joke presented Marjorie with a big bouquet of flowers and Ged with an engraved plate. Ged helped set up the original committee and gave the hall 38 years commitment. We will miss your input Ged.

Other news, we have had the wilderness of plants cut back in the car park, this looks very neat and tidy, thanks to Alan & Dan Mason, the best bush trimmers in the business!!

Also in the car park the fencing damaged by a driver accidentally driving through 9ft of fence panel & snapping 3 posts clean through has now been replaced after obtaining car driver insurance money. Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident. The hall has its own website, where lots of information can be obtained, including useful details about what we have to offer, hire prices, what’s on, photos and a handy contact form.

Have a look at www.doddvillagehall.webs.com Also we are on Facebook too, search Doddington Village Hall.

1st Doddington Guides

The Guides and Senior Section are 10 years old this year. They re-opened as the current unit in September 2007 in the Methodist Chapel. Over the past ten years we have had more than 130 members, many of whom are now qualified leaders with either Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Senior Section units. We are particularly proud of the number of girls we see all the way through to Senior Section, go off to University but still come back to volunteer in Girlguiding.

Over the past ten years we have seen changes within Guiding from uniform, right through to the current time when there is now plans for a complete programme change to keep up to date with the modern girl.

We have attended many residential events from camping, adventurous activity holidays, overnight sleepovers, through to our highlight this year when we took 26 members from Doddington to ‘Our Chalet’ in Switzerland for a winter activity week. The girls had the opportunity to snow tube, cross country ski, complete a 3km sled run as well as learn about the Swiss culture and more about World Guiding.

We have also developed many community links within the village. We regularly support Askham Community village with their fundraising events as well as spending time with the Residents taking them gifts at Christmas and Easter. We help with the village Horticultural Show and have recently made links with the Street Pride group and much more.

The Guides always enjoy any activity involving food, from inventing dishes, to cooking right through to eating it! They also enjoy problem solving, team building activities, cooperative games, art and craft as well as outdoor cooking over fires and in cardboard box ovens. If you would like to join or volunteer with Girlguiding in Doddington please contact Jane on 01354 740222 or go to the website https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-parents/register-your-daughter or https://go.girlguiding.org.uk/join-us/join-as-member.

Wimblington and Doddington Neighbourhood WatchAt our quarterly meeting on Monday 16th October PCSO Carol Holloway was able to join us. She said there had been a number of thefts from vehicles particularly commercial vans. If possible park them tucked well away from the road. DO NOT leave keys in or windows open or anything on show. It only takes two minutes for someone to help themselves and remember leaving your vehicle with the engine running is not only against the law but a wonderful invitation for the casual thief. With the longer nights we all need to be extra careful in locking everything up safely. If you notice anything suspicious then tell your local police, email [email protected] Do remember if at all possible get the registration number, the colour and type of vehicle and time. These are a great help to the police SPEEDWATCH – We are now carrying out regular speed checks in both villages. We can be anywhere at any time so drivers WATCH OUT. If you have the odd hour free to join us please email Joanne (Wimblington) or Andrea (Doddington) at [email protected] Come and join our teams of three people and help make our villages safer.Chairman: Jim Jackson Tel 740653 Treasurer: Bill Harrison Tel 74140 Secretary: Pennie Atkin Tel 742951

With falling leaves, dark mornings and the threat of an early frost we need to keep ourselves warm. Did you know we lose a lot of our heat through our heads and hands get easily chapped. REMEMBER your hats and gloves.

We are delighted to see Doddington Diary up and running and wish it a long and successful run. Now all you Doddington folk can get our news and dates of meetings. Hope to see lots of you at our AGM.Chairman Jill Tuck – 742388 Secretary Pennie Atkin - 742951

Come along at 3.30pm for a sing-a-long then join us for tea, sandwiches, sausage rolls and desserts. Every Wednesday, 2pm - 4pm we have our ‘Friendship Group’ where you can come and make friends over board games, cards etc with tea and coffee. Everyone welcome!

We are a friendly and informal group who get together on the second Tuesday of every month for a coffee and a chat and an exchange of crafty ideas. We pay £3 towards refreshments and to be able to have an outside demonstrator every few months.

Next meeting is on Tuesday 14th November at 14 Miller Close at 7.30pm. Just come along with any craft, knitting or sewing you are doing. Contact Gemma Watts on 740751.

On the first Tuesday of every month a group of liked minded people meet at the seat opposite the gold post box at 10.15am ready for a gentle walk around Doddington.

The walk generally takes about 1 hour and is nothing too strenuous. The walkers usually finish at The Three Tuns for coffee and relaxation (optional).

Everyone is welcome to come along, make friends, have a chat and explore Doddington.
