AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

WARNINGSAlways fully apply the parking brakeand make sure you shift into park (P).Switch the ignition off and remove

the key whenever you leave your vehicle.Do not apply the brake pedal andaccelerator pedal simultaneously.Applying both pedals simultaneously

for more than a few seconds will limitengine performance, which may result indifficulty maintaining speed in traffic andcould lead to serious injury.

Understanding your SelectShift™Automatic Transmission (If Equipped)

Your vehicle is equipped with a SelectShiftautomatic transmission gearshift lever andsteering wheel mounted shifter paddles.The buttons on the gearshift lever and theshifter paddles serve the same functions.The SelectShift Automatic transmissiongives you the ability to change gears up ordown (without a clutch) as desired.In order to prevent the engine from runningat too low an RPM, which may cause it tostall, SelectShift still automatically makessome downshifts if it has determined thatyou have not downshifted in time.Although SelectShift will make somedownshifts for you, it still allows you todownshift at any time as long as theSelectShift determines that damage willnot be caused to the engine fromover-revving.SelectShift will not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit. It must be shifted manually bypressing the + button or paddle.Note: Engine damage may occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.

The SelectShift Automatic transmissionfeature has two modes: PRS and M mode.

Manual (M)Moving the gearshift lever to the manual(M) position allows you to manually selectthe gear you desire. Only the current gearwill display. Use the buttons on thegearshift lever or steering wheel tomanually select gears. Press the + buttonor paddle to upshift or the – button orpaddle to downshift. Progressive Range SelectionProgressive Range Selection gives you theability to lockout gears from the automaticshifting range. Theavailable and selected gears are indicatedon the instrument cluster.All available gears display with the currentgear indicated. USING FOUR-WHEEL DRIVENote: For important information regardingthe safe operation of this type of vehicle,see General Information in the Wheels andTires chapter.Note: Do not use 4H or 4L mode on dry,hard surfaced roads. Doing so can produceexcessive noise, increase tire wear and maydamage drive components. 4H or 4L modeis only intended for consistently slippery orloose surfaces. Use of 4L mode on thesesurfaces may produce some noise (such asoccasional clunks), but will not damagedrive components.Note: If 4L is selected while your vehicle ismoving above 3 mph (5 km/h), the 4WDsystem will not perform a shift. This isnormal and should be no reason for concern.Refer to Shifting to or from 4L (4X4 Low)for proper operation.Note: You can switch on and switch off theelectronic locking differential by pressingthe center of the 4WD control. SeeElectronic Locking Differential (page 18).

Using the 2-Speed Automatic 4WDSystem With Mechanical LockThis system provides similar 4Acapabilities as other 2-speed torque ondemand (TOD) systems but withmechanically locking 4H and 4L settings.In 4A mode, the system is interactive withthe road, continually monitoring andadjusting power delivery to the front andrear wheels to optimize traction based onterrain mode selection. 2H (4X2)For general on-road driving, this modeprovides optimal smoothness and fueleconomy at high speeds. Sends power tothe rear wheels only.Note: 2H may engage or disengageautomatically based on terrain modeselection. See Principle of Operation(page 20).

4A (4X4 AUTO)Provides electronic controlled four-wheeldrive with power delivered to the front andrear wheels, as required, for increasedtraction. The system continuously monitorsroad conditions, driver's input as well asother vehicle sensors and optimizes thesystem's behavior based on terrain modeselection.Note: 4A may engage or disengageautomatically based on terrain modeselection. See Principle of Operation(page 20).

4H (4X4 HIGH)Provides mechanically locked four-wheeldrive power to both the front and rearwheels for use in off-road or winterconditions such as deep snow, sand ormud. This mode is not for use on drypavement.

Note: 4H may engage or disengageautomatically based on terrain modeselection. See Principle of Operation(page 20).

4L (4X4 LOW)Provides mechanically locked four-wheeldrive power to both the front and rearwheels with additional gearing forincreased torque multiplication. Intendedonly for off-road applications such as deepsand, steep grades, or pulling heavyobjects. 4L (4X4 low) will not engage whileyour vehicle is moving above 3 mph(5 km/h); this is normal and should be noreason for concern. Refer to Shifting to orfrom 4L (4X4 low) for proper operation.Note: 4L may engage or disengageautomatically based on terrain modeselection. See Principle of Operation(page 20).

Shifting between 4WD system modesNote: Momentarily releasing the acceleratorpedal while a shift in progress messagedisplays will improve engagement ordisengagement performance.Note: Do not perform this operation if therear wheels are slipping or when applyingthe accelerator pedal.Note: You may hear some noise as thesystem shifts or engages; this is normal.You can move the control from 2H to 4Aor 4H at a stop or while driving. Theinformation display may display a messageindicating a 4X4 shift is in progress and theLED light for the selected mode flashes.Once the shift is complete the informationdisplay shows the system mode selectedand the LED light for the selected modeturns solid.

Shifting to or from 4L (4X4 low)Note: You may hear some noise as thesystem shifts or engages; this is normal.

1. Bring your vehicle to a speed of 3 mph(5 km/h) or less.

2. Place the transmission in neutral (N).3. Move the 4WD control to the desired

position.The information display will display amessage indicating a 4X4 shift is inprogress. The information display will thendisplay the system mode selected. If anyof the above shift conditions are notpresent, the shift will not occur and theinformation display will display informationguiding the driver through the propershifting procedures. If the above conditionsare not satisfied in 30 seconds, the systemreverts back to the previous 4WD mode orterrain mode.If Shift Delayed Pull Forward displays inthe information display, a transfer casegear tooth blockage is present. To alleviatethis condition, place the transmission in aforward gear, move your vehicle forwardapproximately 5 ft (1.5 m), and shift thetransmission back to neutral (N) to allowthe transfer case to complete the rangeshift.

How Your Vehicle Differs FromOther Vehicles

WARNINGVehicles with a higher center ofgravity (utility and four-wheel drivevehicles) handle differently than

vehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injury anddeath.

Truck and utility vehicles can differ fromsome other vehicles. Your vehicle may behigher to allow it to travel over roughterrain without getting hung up ordamaging underbody components.The differences that make your vehicle soversatile also make it handle differentlythan an ordinary passenger car.Maintain steering wheel control at alltimes, especially in rough terrain. Sincesudden changes in terrain can result inabrupt steering wheel motion, make sureyou grip the steering wheel from theoutside. Do not grip the spokes.Drive cautiously to avoid vehicle damagefrom concealed objects such as rocks andstumps.You should either know the terrain orexamine maps of the area before driving.Map out your route before driving in thearea. To maintain steering and brakingcontrol of your vehicle, you must have allfour wheels on the ground and they mustbe rolling, not sliding or spinning.

Driving Off-Road With Truck andUtility VehiclesNote: On some models, the initial shift fromtwo-wheel drive to four-wheel drive whileyour vehicle is moving can cause somemomentary clunk and ratcheting sounds.This is the front drivetrain coming up tospeed and the automatic locking hubsengaging and is not cause for concern.Note: Momentarily releasing the acceleratorpedal while a shift in progress messagedisplays will improve engagement ordisengagement performance.Four-wheel drive vehicles are speciallyequipped for driving on sand, snow, mudand rough terrain and have operatingcharacteristics that are somewhatdifferent from conventional vehicles, bothon and off the road.

Four-Wheel Drive

The transfer case supplies power to all fourwheels. On four-wheel drive vehicles, thetransfer case allows you to select different4WD modes when necessary. You can findinformation on transfer case operation andshifting procedures in this chapter. You canfind information on transfer casemaintenance in the Maintenance chapter.You should become thoroughly familiarwith this information before you operateyour vehicle.Four-wheel drive (when you select a 4WDmode) uses all four wheels to power yourvehicle. This increases traction, enablingyou to drive over terrain and roadconditions that a conventional two-wheeldrive vehicle cannot.

Basic Operating Principles• Drive slower in strong crosswinds which

can affect the normal steeringcharacteristics of your vehicle.

• When driving your vehicle on surfacesmade slippery by loose sand, water,gravel, snow or ice proceed with care.

• Do not use 4H or 4L on dry, hardsurfaced roads. Doing so will produceexcessive noise, increase tire wear andmay damage drive components. 4H or4L modes are only for consistentlyslippery or loose surfaces.

If Your Vehicle leaves the RoadIf your vehicle leaves the road, reduce yourvehicle speed and avoid severe braking.When your vehicle speed decreases, easeyour vehicle back onto the road. Do notturn the steering wheel sharply whilereturning your vehicle to the road.It may be safer to stay on the shoulder ofthe road and slow down gradually beforereturning to the road. You may lose controlif you do not slow down or if you turn thesteering wheel too sharply or abruptly.

It may be less risky to strike small objects,such as freeway reflectors, with minordamage to your vehicle rather thanattempt a sudden return to the road whichcould cause your vehicle to slide sidewaysout of control or roll over. Remember, yoursafety and the safety of others should beyour primary concern.

Emergency ManeuversIn an unavoidable emergency situationwhere a sudden sharp turn must be made,remember to avoid over-driving yourvehicle (i.e. turn the steering wheel only asrapidly and as far as required to avoid theemergency). Excessive steering can resultin loss of vehicle control. Apply smoothpressure to the accelerator pedal or brakepedal when changes in vehicle speed arerequired. Avoid abrupt steering,acceleration and braking. This could resultin an increased risk of vehicle roll over, lossof vehicle control and personal injury. Useall available road surface to bring yourvehicle to a safe direction of travel.In the event of an emergency stop, avoidskidding the tires and do not attempt anysharp steering wheel movements.If your vehicle goes from one type ofsurface to another (i.e. from concrete togravel) there will be a change in the wayyour vehicle responds to a maneuver (i.e.steering, acceleration or braking).

SandWhen driving over sand, try to keep all fourwheels on the most solid area of the trail.Avoid reducing the tire pressures but shiftto a lower gear and drive steadily throughthe terrain. Apply the accelerator slowlyand avoid excessive wheel slip.When driving at slow speeds in deep sandunder high outside temperatures, use a lowgear when possible. Low gear operationwill maximize the engine and transmissioncooling capability.

Avoid driving at excessive speeds, thiscauses vehicle momentum to work againstyou and your vehicle could become stuckto the point that assistance may berequired from another vehicle. Remember,you may be able to back out the way youcame if you proceed with caution.

Mud and Water

MudBe cautious of sudden changes in vehiclespeed or direction when you are driving inmud. Even four-wheel drive vehicles canlose traction in slick mud. If your vehicledoes slide, steer in the direction of the slideuntil you regain control of your vehicle.After driving through mud, clean off residuestuck to rotating driveshafts and tires.Excess mud stuck on tires and rotatingdriveshafts can cause an imbalance thatcould damage drive components.

WaterIf you must drive through high water, driveslowly. Traction or brake capability maybe limited.When driving through water, determine thedepth to make sure your vehicle can safelytravel through it. See Off-Road Driving(page 29). If the ignition system gets wet,your vehicle may stall.Once through water, always try the brakes.Wet brakes do not stop your vehicle aseffectively as dry brakes. Drying improvesby applying light pressure to the brakepedal while moving slowly.Note: Driving through deep water maydamage the transmission. If the front or rearaxle is submerged in water, the axlelubricant and power transfer unit lubricantshould be checked and changed ifnecessary.

Driving on Hilly or Sloping TerrainAlthough natural obstacles may make itnecessary to travel diagonally up or downa hill or steep incline, you should alwaystry to drive straight up or straight down.Note: Avoid turning on steep slopes or hills.A danger lies in losing traction, slippingsideways and possible vehicle roll over.Whenever driving on a hill, determinebeforehand the route you will use. Do notdrive over the crest of a hill without seeingwhat conditions are on the other side. Donot drive in reverse over a hill without theaid of an observer.When climbing a steep slope or hill, startin a lower gear rather than downshifting toa lower gear from a higher gear once theascent has started. This reduces strain onthe engine and the possibility of stalling.If your vehicle stalls, do not try to turnaround because this could cause vehicleroll over. It is better to reverse back to asafe location.Apply just enough power to the wheels toclimb the hill. Too much power will causethe tires to slip, spin or lose traction,resulting in loss of vehicle control.

Descend a hill in the same gear you woulduse to climb up the hill to avoid excessivebrake application and brake overheating.Do not descend in neutral. Disengageoverdrive or move the transmissionselector lever to a lower gear. Whendescending a steep hill, avoid sudden hardbraking as you could lose control. The frontwheels have to be turning in order to steeryour vehicle.If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, applythe brakes steadily. Do not pump thebrakes.

Driving on Snow and Ice

WARNINGIf you are driving in slipperyconditions that require tire chains orcables, then it is critical that you drive

cautiously. Keep speeds down, allow forlonger stopping distances and avoidaggressive steering to reduce the chancesof a loss of vehicle control which can leadto serious injury or death. If the rear end ofyour vehicle slides while cornering, steer inthe direction of the slide until you regaincontrol of your vehicle.

Note: Excessive tire slippage can causetransmission damage.Four-wheel drive vehicles have advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles in snow andice but can skid like any other vehicle.Should you start to slide while driving onsnowy or icy roads, turn the steering wheelin the direction of the slide until you regaincontrol.Avoid sudden applications of power andquick changes of direction on snow andice. Apply the accelerator slowly andsteadily when starting from a full stop.

Avoid sudden braking. Although afour-wheel drive vehicle may acceleratebetter than a two-wheel drive vehicle insnow and ice, it will not stop any faster asbraking occurs at all four wheels. Do notbecome overconfident as to roadconditions.Make sure you allow sufficient distancebetween you and other vehicles forstopping. Drive slower than usual andconsider using one of the lower gears. Inemergency stopping situations, apply thebrake steadily. Do not pump the brakepedal.

If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mud orSnow

Four-Wheel Drive

WARNINGSAlways apply the parking brake fullyand make sure you shift into park (P).Switch the ignition off and remove

the key whenever you leave your vehicle.

On some four-wheel drive vehicles, whenthe transfer case is in the neutral (N)position, the engine and transmissiondisconnect from the rest of the driveline.Therefore, your vehicle is free to roll evenif the automatic transmission is in park (P)or the manual transmission is in gear. Donot leave your vehicle unattended with thetransfer case in the neutral (N) position.Always set the parking brake fully and turnoff the ignition when leaving your vehicle.

Maintenance and ModificationsThe suspension and steering systems onyour vehicle have been designed andtested to provide predictable performancewhether loaded or empty. For this reason,we strongly recommend that you do notmake modifications such as adding orremoving parts (for example, lift kits orstabilizer bars) or by using replacementparts not equivalent to the original factoryequipment.We recommend that you use caution whenyour vehicle has either a high load or device(such as ladders or luggage racks). Anymodifications to your vehicle that raise thecenter of gravity may cause your vehicleto roll over when there is a loss of vehiclecontrol.Failure to maintain your vehicle correctlymay void the warranty, increase your repaircost, reduce vehicle performance andoperational capabilities and adverselyaffect you and your passenger's safety. Werecommend you frequently inspect yourvehicle's chassis components when yourvehicle is subject to off road usage.

ELECTRONIC LOCKINGDIFFERENTIALNote: The electronic locking differential isfor off-road use only and is not for use ondry pavement. Using the electronic lockingdifferential on dry pavement will result inincreased tire wear, noise and vibration.The electronic locking differential is adevice housed in the rear axle that allowsboth rear wheels to turn at the samespeed. The electronic locking differentialcan provide additional traction should yourvehicle become stuck. You can activate

the differential electronically and shift iton the fly within the operating speed range.The electronic differential willautomatically disengage when the vehiclespeed exceeds a set value and it willautomatically reengage when the vehiclespeed goes below a set value (see tablebelow). It will also automatically engagebased on certain selected drive modes.See Principle of Operation (page 20).The electronic locking differential is for usein mud, rocks, sand, or any off-roadcondition where you need maximumtraction. Note: A weight-distributing hitchis required to tow over 5,000 lb(2,267.9 kg) maximum trailerweight or 500 lb (226.7 kg) tongueweight due to your vehicle's hightravel suspension tuning.Follow these steps to setup aweight-distributing hitch thathelps maintain the proper angleof your tow vehicle and trailer forbetter combination control.1. Park the loaded vehicle,

without the trailer, on a levelsurface.

2. Measure the height to the topof your vehicle's front wheelopening on the fender. This isH1.

3. Attach the loaded trailer toyour vehicle without theweight-distributing barsconnected.

4. Measure the height to the topof your vehicle's front wheelopening on the fender a secondtime. This is H2.

5. Install and adjust the tensionin the weight-distributing barsso that the height of yourvehicle's front wheel openingon the fender is approximatelyhalf the way down from H2,toward H1.

6. Check that the trailer is level orslightly nose down toward yourvehicle. If not, adjust the ballheight accordingly and repeatSteps 2-6.

When the trailer is level or slightlynose down toward the vehicle:• Lock the bar tension adjuster

in place.• Check that the trailer tongue

securely attaches and locksonto the hitch.

• Install safety chains, lighting,and trailer brake controls asrequired by law or the trailermanufacturer.

TOWING THE VEHICLE ONFOUR WHEELS

WARNINGIf your vehicle has a steering wheellock make sure the ignition is in theaccessory or on position when being

towed.

Emergency TowingIf your vehicle becomes inoperable(without access to wheel dollies,car-hauling trailer, or flatbed transportvehicle), it can be flat-towed (all wheelson the ground, regardless of the powertrainand transmission configuration) under thefollowing conditions:• Your vehicle is facing forward for

towing in a forward direction.• Place the transmission in position N. If

you cannot move the transmission intoN, you may need to override it.

• Maximum speed is 35 mph (56 km/h).• Maximum distance is 50 mi (80 km).

Recreational TowingNote: Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle.Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing, such as towingyour vehicle behind a motorhome. Wedesigned these guidelines to preventdamage to your transmission.Your Ford Performance vehicle can be putin neutral tow (Recreational Towing Mode)by placing the transfer case in its neutralposition and engaging thefour-wheel-down towing feature. Performthe steps outlined in the following sectionafter positioning your vehicle behind thetow vehicle and properly securing themtogether.

Note: Make sure you properly secure yourvehicle to the tow vehicle.1. Put the ignition in the on position, but

do not start the engine. If your vehiclehas an ignition key, turn the key to on.If your vehicle has intelligent access,press the engine START/STOP buttononce without pressing the brake pedal.

2. Press and hold the brake pedal.3. Rotate the four-wheel drive switch to

2H.4. Shift the transmission to position N.5. Enable Neutral Tow through the

information display by selectingSettings from the cluster menu.

6. Then select Advanced Settings.7. Then select Vehicle.8. Then select Neutral Tow.Note: If completed successfully, theinformation display shows NEUTRAL TOWLEAVE IN N or NEUTRAL TOW ENABLEDLEAVE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL.This indicates that your vehicle is safe totow with all wheels on the ground.Note: If you do not see the message in thedisplay, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.Note: You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts into its neutral position.This is normal.9. Leave the transmission in position N

and turn the ignition as far as it will gotoward the off position (it will not turnfully off when the transmission is inposition N). If your vehicle has anignition key, you must leave the key inthe ignition while towing. To lock andunlock your vehicle, use the keylessentry keypad or extra set of keys. If your

vehicle has intelligent access, press theengine START/STOP button oncewithout pressing the brake pedal. Youdo not need to leave your keys in thevehicle. You can lock and unlock yourvehicle as you normally do.

10. Release the brake pedal.WARNINGS

Do not disconnect the battery duringrecreational towing. It prevents thetransfer case from shifting properly

and may cause the vehicle to roll, even ifthe transmission is in park (P).

Shifting the transfer case to itsneutral position for recreationaltowing may cause the vehicle to roll,

even if the transmission is in park (P). Itmay injure the driver and others. Make sureyou press the foot brake and the vehicle isin a secure, safe position when you shift toneutral (N).

Note: Failing to put the transfer case in itsneutral position will damage vehiclecomponents.Note: You can check four-wheel-downtowing status at any time by opening thedriver's door or turning the ignition to theaccessory or on position and verifying theNEUTRAL TOW ENABLED messagedisplays in the cluster.To exit four-wheel-down towing and returnthe transfer case to its 2H position:1. With your vehicle still properly secured

to the tow vehicle, put the ignition inthe on position, but do not start theengine. If your vehicle has an ignitionkey, turn the key to on. If your vehiclehas intelligent access, press the engineSTART/STOP button once withoutpressing the brake pedal.

2. Press and hold the brake pedal.3. Shift the transmission out of N and into

any gear.

4. Release the brake pedal.Note: If completed successfully, theinstrument cluster displays 4X2, andNEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.Note: If the indicator light and message donot display, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.Note: You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts out of its neutralposition. This is normal.Note: If SHIFT DELAY PULL FORWARDdisplays in the instrument cluster, transfercase gear tooth blockage is present. See theinstructions after this section.5. Apply the parking brake, and then

disconnect the vehicle from the towvehicle.

6. Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift the transmission toposition D to make sure the transfercase is out of position N.

7. If the transfer case does notsuccessfully shift out of position N, setthe parking brake until you can haveyour vehicle serviced.

Resolving the SHIFT DELAY PULLFORWARD MessageIf the instrument cluster displays SHIFTDELAY PULL FORWARD perform thefollowing:1. Press and hold the brake pedal.2. Put the transmission into position N,

and then start the engine.3. With the engine running, shift the

transmission to position D and let thevehicle roll forward, up to 3 feet (1meter). You may hear an audible noiseas the transfer case shifts out of itsneutral position. This is normal.

4. Make sure the instrument clusterdisplays NEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.

OFF-ROAD DRIVINGIn addition to providing an excellenton-road driving experience, your vehicleexcels at all types of off-road driving. Thetruck has been designed and equipped toallow you to explore those places wherethe road doesn’t take you whether it’s aforest trail or the open desert. Before goingoff-roading, consult with your localgovernmental agencies to determinedesignated off-road trails and recreationareas. Also, be sure to understand anyoff-road vehicle registration requirementsfor the area in which you plan on driving.Tread Lightly is an educational programdesigned to increase public awareness ofland-use regulations and responsibilitiesin our nation’s wilderness areas. Ford joinsthe U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of LandManagement in encouraging you to helppreserve our national forest and otherpublic and private lands by treading lightly.Before taking your vehicle off-roading, abasic vehicle inspection should be done tomake sure that the vehicle is in top workingcondition.It is always recommended that at leasttwo vehicles are used while off-roading.The buddy system helps make sure thathelp is close at hand should a vehiclebecome stuck or damaged. It is also wiseto take supplies such as a first aid kit,supply of water, tow strap, cell or satellitephone with you any time an off-roadexcursion is planned.Remove the front license plate beforeoff-roading to achieve optimalperformance.

Basic Off-road Driving Techniques• Grip the steering wheel with thumbs

on the outside of the rim. This willreduce the risk of injury due to abruptsteering wheel motions that occurwhen negotiating rough terrain. Do notgrip the steering wheel with thumbsinside the rim.

• Throttle, brake and steering inputsshould be made in a smooth andcontrolled manner. Sudden inputs tothe controls can cause loss of tractionor upset the vehicle, especially whileon sloped terrain or while crossingobstacles such as rocks or logs.

• Look ahead on your route notingupcoming obstacles, surface textureor color changes or any other factorswhich may indicate a change inavailable traction, and adjust thevehicle speed and route accordingly.During pre-run, mark obstacles withGPS markers to make sure appropriatespeeds are used to avoid potentialvehicle damage.

• When driving off-road, if the front orrear suspension is bottoming-outand/or excessive contact with theskid-plates is encountered, reducevehicle speed to avoid potentialdamage to the vehicle.

• When running with other vehicles, it isrecommended that communication isused, and the lead vehicle notify othervehicles of obstacles that could causepotential vehicle damage.

• Always keep available groundclearance in mind and pick a route thatminimizes the risk of catching theunderside of the vehicle on an obstacle.

Driving Hints

• When negotiating low speed obstacles,applying light brake pressure inconjunction with the throttle will helpprevent the vehicle from jerking andwill allow you to negotiate the obstaclein a more controlled manner. Using 4Lwill also help with this.

• Use and equip supplemental safetyequipment as discussed later in thischapter.

• Please consult your local off-roadgroup for other helpful tips.

• Off-roading requires a high degree ofconcentration. Even if your local lawdoes not prohibit alcohol use whiledriving off-road, Ford stronglyrecommends against drinking if youplan to off-road.

Crossing Obstacles• Review the path ahead before

attempting to cross any obstacle. It isbest if the obstacle is reviewed fromoutside the vehicle so that there is agood understanding of terrain conditionboth in front of and behind theobstacle.

• Approach obstacles slowly and slowlyinch the vehicle over.

• If a large obstacle such as a rockcannot be avoided, choose a path thatplaces the rock directly under the tirerather than the undercarriage of thevehicle. This will help prevent damageto the vehicle.

• Ditches and washouts should becrossed at a 45 degree angle, allowingeach wheel to independently cross theobstacle.

Hill ClimbingWARNING

Extreme care should be used whensteering the vehicle in reverse downa slope so as not to cause the vehicle

to swerve out of control.

• Always attempt to climb a steep hillalong the fall line of the slope and notdiagonally.

• If the vehicle is unable to make it upthe hill, DO NOT attempt to turn backdown the slope. Place the vehicle inlow range and slowly back down inreverse.

• When descending a steep slope, selectlow gear and engage hill descentcontrol. Use the throttle and brakepedals to control your descent speedas described earlier in this section usinghill descent control. Note that hilldescent control is functional in reverseand should be used in this situation.

Water WadingYour vehicle is designed to operate in waterdepths up to 32 inches (810 millimeters).However, as the water depth increases,vehicle speed must be reduced to avoidpotential vehicle damage.• Always determine the depth before

attempting a water crossing.• Proceed slowly and avoid splashing

water any more than is necessary.• Be aware that obstacles and debris

may be beneath the water’s surface.• Keep the doors fully closed during the

water crossing.• Upon completion of the water crossing,

slowly drive a short distance and checkthe brakes for full effectiveness.

Ford Performance has engineered yourvehicle for off-road use beyond what isnormal for a F-150. However, it can incurdamage if driven beyond its capabilities.Skid plates, shock guards and runningboards were designed to help limit damageto vital components and exterior finishes,but cannot prevent all damage if driven inextreme off-road conditions. Damage toskid plates, shock guards, running boardsand exterior finishes as well as bent,cracked or broken body, frame and chassiscomponents may not be covered bywarranty.It is important that you take the time tobecome familiar with the controls anddynamics of your vehicle beforeattempting higher speed off-roading.

Driving Hints

Some points to consider:• Build up speed slowly. Initially, drive at

a pace which allows ample time to fullyassess the terrain around you and tounderstand how the vehicle isresponding to both the terrain anddriver inputs. Increase pace as comfortincreases while always being mindfulof how the vehicle is responding tovarious events at different speeds.

• Find a wide open place to experimentwith different functions on the truck.Try a given maneuver with differentvehicle settings (4H vs. 4L),(differential locked vs. unlocked),(AdvanceTrac in key-on vs. single pressvs. press and hold modes) and see howthe truck responds. Start slowly andbuild pace as comfort increases.

• Similarly, in a wide open space,experiment with different drivingtechniques. For example, if the vehicleis tending to push straight ahead whentrying to negotiate a turn(understeering or plowing), a lightapplication of the brake while turningmay help rotate the truck. A wider entryto the corner or entering the cornermore slowly may help the truck turnand allow you to apply the throttlesooner after negotiating the turn.

• Remember the phrase "smooth is fast".This refers to your steering, throttle,and brake movements. Smoothdecisive movements will yieldimproved results while helping toincrease safety.

• As speed increases, it is wise to lookfarther ahead of the vehicle so thatthere is time to react to oncomingobstacles. Remember that in manyoff-road environments, obstacles willbe hard to see until they are relativelynear. A good strategy is to alternatebetween looking far ahead and upcloser to the front of the vehicle asyou’re driving.

• Also remember to drive what you cansee. This refers to not driving fasterthan you are able to negotiateunforeseen upcoming obstacles. Thiscould refer to obstacles over a brow, ina ravine, in brush, in dusty conditions,and in the darkness among others.

• If you are driving in a dusty area, be sureto leave ample distance between youand any other vehicles to allow foradequate vision.

• Always remember that you may not bethe only one in a particular recreationalarea, always be cognizant of others inyour area. This is especially true ofmotorcycles and ATV’s which may bemore difficult to spot than a full-sizedvehicle.

• If driving in desert conditions, it isadvised that you always drive with yourheadlights on to help other driversmore easily see you.

• While driving in desert conditions, themidpoint of the day is the most difficulttime to see many of the small ridgesand dips due to flat shadows from thesun being at its highest point. Extremecare should be taken at these times tonot inadvertently run into theseobstacles.

• It is highly encouraged that you switchto off-road mode for off roadoperation. Please see the TerrainResponse section of this supplementfor more details.

Driving Hints

After Off-Road DrivingIt is important to complete a full vehicleinspection after off-road driving. Someitems to check include:• Make sure that tires are inflated to

proper tire pressure as indicated on thetire placard.

• Check the wheels and undercarriagefor built up mud or debris which cancause vehicle vibration.

• Make sure that the grille and radiatorare clear of any obstructions that mayaffect cooling.

• Make sure that the brakes are in properworking order and free of any mud,stones and debris, which can becometrapped around the brake rotor,backing plate and caliper.

• Check that the air filter is clean and dry.• Inspect for torn or punctured boots on

ball joints, half shafts, steering gears.• Inspect exhaust system for damage or

looseness.• Inspect undercarriage fasteners. If any

are loose or damaged, tighten orreplace ensuring that the proper torquespecification is used.

• Inspect the tires for any cuts in thetread or sidewall area. Also inspect thesidewall for any bulge indicatingdamage to the tire.

• Inspect the wheels for dents, cracks,or other damage.

• Refit the front license plate if removedpreviously.

CLEANING THE EXTERIORNote: Do not use front bumper openings asa step. This could cause damage to yourvehicle.Do not drive your vehicle through anautomated, commercial car wash due tothe vehicle’s tire width and track. Washyour vehicle by hand, or by using atouchless commercial wash with nomechanical tracks on the floor. Do not usea commercial or high-pressure wand onthe bed-side graphic surface or graphicsedges.

Vehicle Care

WHEELSYour vehicle is equipped with uniquewheels matched to the tires. To avoiddamage to your wheels:• Maintain proper tire pressure. See Tire

Care (page 35).• Due to extreme tire/wheel width, this

vehicle cannot be taken through anautomatic car wash that usesmechanical tracks, as wheel damagemay result.

• When installing wheels, always torquelug nuts to specification with a torquewrench.

• Inspect your wheels for damage on aregular basis. If you have a damagedwheel, replace it immediately.

• In the event that you encounter anabnormally harsh impact, inspect theoutside tire wall of your wheels, bothinside and out, for damage.

Optional Bead-Lock CompatibleWheelNote: Ford Performance only recommendsusing bead-lock rings from FordPerformance Parts, in conjunction with theOEM tire. Any other combination using thiswheel could result in air loss or tire failure.Note: Converting the bead-lock compatiblewheel to true bead-locks is for off-road useonly. On road driving is not permitted.If your vehicle is equipped with the optionalbead lock compatible wheel, you have theability to convert this wheel to use a truebead-lock ring, which allows operation atlow tire pressures when off-road tominimize risk of de-beading the tire. TIRE CARE

WARNINGSAlways re-inflate tires torecommended tire pressures

before the vehicle is operatedon-road. The recommendedpressure is located on the tirelabel or safety certification label,located on the B-pillar, inside thedriver's door.

After off-road use, beforereturning to the road, check

the wheels and tires for damage.Off-road use may cause damageto your wheels and tires that canlead to tire failure, loss of vehiclecontrol, serious injury or death.

Replace the wheels and tireswith the exact original brand,

size and construction that cameoriginally on your vehicle. Use ofany other wheel or tirecombinations, even with identicalsize ratings, may result ininsufficient running clearances,tire rubbing and eventualpuncture. Failure to follow tirereplacement recommendationscan lead to tire failure, loss ofvehicle control, serious injury ordeath.

Note: If you have reduced your tirepressure for off-road use, the tirepressure monitoring system(TPMS) warning light will thenactivate in the instrument panel asa reminder to re-inflate the tiresbefore returning to the road.

Wheels and Tires

Your vehicle is equipped with highperformance, all-terrain tiresdesigned to optimize handling,steering and braking to provide theperformance you expect in a FordPerformance vehicle. These tiresare optimized for both on andoff-road performance, and theirride, noise and wearcharacteristics are different fromother tires. Also, because of theiraggressive tread profile, it isimportant that you maintain yourtires properly.• Always maintain your tire

pressures according to the tireinformation placard located onthe driver’s door B-pillar, usingan accurate gauge. Rememberto be prepared to re-inflateyour tires before returning tothe road. If a tire filling stationis not available, remember toprepare a supplemental meansto inflate the tires, such as aportable compressor.

• In cold temperature, check thetire pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for more thanthree hours. Do not reducepressure of warm tires.

• Check your tire pressure oftento maintain it properly. Tirepressure can diminish over timeand fluctuate withtemperature.

• Do not overload your vehicle.Maximum vehicle and axleweights are listed on the tireinformation placard.

• Extra caution should be takenwhen operating the vehiclenear its maximum load,including assuring proper tirepressure and reducing speeds.

• In the event that you encounteran abnormally harsh impact,inspect your tires for damage.

• Inspect your tires for damageon a regular basis. Replace adamaged tire immediately.

• The original equipment tires onyour vehicle are not designedto be used with snow chains. Ifyou operate your vehicle withsnow chains, use a smaller tireand wheel combination asrecommended in your owner'smanual.

• Proper suspension alignmentis critical for maximumperformance and optimal tirewear. If you notice uneven tirewear, have your alignmentchecked.

Tire RotationBecause your vehicle’s tiresperform different jobs, they oftenwear differently. To make sureyour tires wear evenly and lastlonger, have them rotated.Note: Front tires are shown on theleft side of the diagram.

AUXILIARY SWITCHESThe auxiliary switchboard on the overheadconsole makes aftermarket customizationeasier, with six prewired switches attachedto the power distribution box for electricalaccessories.

These switches are labeled AUX 1, AUX2, AUX 3, AUX 4, AUX 5 and AUX 6. Theywill only operate while the ignition is in theon position, whether the engine is runningor not. It is, however, recommended thatthe engine remain running to maintain abattery charge when using the switchesfor an extended duration or higher currentdraws. When switched on by the operatorthey provide electrical battery power for avariety of uses.The switches control relays and fuses thatare under the hood in the powerdistribution box. The Aux switch poweredcircuits are found as blunt-cut sealedwires, located by the power distributionbox.
