FEATURED SITE - ALABAMA

The Evelyn Burrow Museum presents a unique collection of decorative arts from the Victorian era to modern times, from fine examples of delicately crafted porcelain to artful everyday wares.

This extraordinary collection includes more than 5,000 objects primarily of porcelain and pottery, glass, and bronze, highlights of which are displayed thematically throughout the museum. Visitors are invited to share Mrs. Burrow’s appreciation for the decorative arts, her passion for collecting, and her particular love of horses in this exhibition.

“We are delighted to present this exhibition of decorative arts from the

collection Mrs. Evelyn Burrow so generously donated to the college, in the

new museum that bears her name. May the Evelyn Burrow Museum delight

and inspire you on your first visit and on many future visits with the same

sense of beauty and wonder that inspired Mrs. Burrow in her collecting over

more than 60 years.”

-  Dr. Vicki Karolewics, Wallace State President

The Evelyn Burrow Museum is located on the campus of Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala., in The Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The Burrow Museum frequently hosts traveling exhibits from other museums as well as shows by artists.

The Chattanooga Zoo is a natural classroom —

a place where humans and animals form deep

connections. Our intimate, innovative exhibits

allow guests to get up close with our animals

to gain a better understanding of the natural

world. The Chattanooga Zoo offers wide-

ranging educational offerings, including formal

public classes in the forms of holiday, spring break and summer camps plus on-

going family and early learning classes. Our Home School Series includes two

events each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Each visit is different than

the last! Homeschool Family Days is a three-hour event specifically designed

for homeschool families. We want to help inspire our youth to further immerse

themselves into the natural world as well as meet some other families with

similar interests! Our next Home School Day will be in Spring 2018 March 23rd.

Its theme is “Animal Care and Exploration,” and will focus on learning all about

the animal care our zookeepers provide daily to our Zoo animals! Activities

will include picking up “poop”, getting trained like an animal, and exploring

enrichment making with our zoo educators and keepers! There will be two

formal programs, one informal meet-n-greet, snack and drink available, a

craft, special animal chats, and a self-guided learning activity that leads you

throughout the zoo.

In addition to our Home School series, we also offer fun group activities such

as overnights. Have you ever wanted to “snooze in the Zoo”? Well, now you

can! Overnights include a guided tour of the zoo, fun hands-on educational

programming, and special animal encounters. Come visit us today to see a

variety of animals, including jaguars, tamarins, snow leopards, red pandas, sand

cats, and many more! Check out our website for available programs and even

more information at chattzoo.org!

From dynamic tours and interdisciplinary programs to interactions with professional artists, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum offers an unparalleled learning experience for homeschool students of all ages. With over 2.5 million artifacts in its growing collection, the Museum offers students an opportunity to engage the history that shaped country music and American culture.

Guided tours of the Museum’s one-of-a-kind archival video and audio elements, instruments, interactive touchscreens, and more, provide a multi-layered learning experience for all types of learners.

The stories told by the Museum’s exhibitions are expanded on with hands-on programs, including instrument demonstrations, songwriting sessions, and other unique opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the vibrant history of the music.

In addition to museum experiences, students can tour the Historic RCA Studio B, located on Nashville’s Music Row, and stand where Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and others made their landmark recordings.

Next, students can dive into the history of letterpress printing on an interactive tour of Hatch Show Print, a working letterpress shop founded in 1879. Participants will even have the chance to hand ink and print the final color on their very own commemorative poster.

Students will also enjoy the Taylor Swift Education Center – a space for hands-on experiences that are connected to the Museum’s mission to preserve and interpret country music. Every weekend, students can examine artifacts, learn instrument basics, create art, and more.

The Museum offers classroom support through distance learning with its flagship songwriting program Words & Music. The program provides students a rich learning experience that culminates in an interactive workshop with a professional songwriter.

Everything at the Museum is a learning experience. Whether you’re an aspiring songwriter, history buff, or music aficionado, the Museum has something for everyone.

The ghosts and ghouls of Phantom Fright Nights will rise again from their slumber on autumn nights. Enjoy your favorite rides and half a dozen haunts in an unforgettably

creepy carnival atmosphere. Pair your evening with a pre-scare dinner and a screening of “Friday the 13th” in our 4-D Theater – if you dare!

Since this event is a little too creepy for our younger fans, the park will offer a new daytime event – Happy Hauntings, dedicated to autumn fun and the gentler side of Halloween. The whole family can participate in pumpkin decorating, hay rides, and more.

After a brief break, the goblins give way to gingerbread as Christmas comes to Kennywood! More than a million Holiday Lights will illuminate the park with holiday color. A spectacular holiday light show surrounds the lagoon with color and carols, choreographed to the sounds of the season. Enjoy your favorite rides, yuletide choirs, cookie

decorating, an enchanting miniature train display, and a chance to give your list to Mr. Ho Ho Ho himself – Santa Claus! Start out your evening with Dinner with Santa – a tasty buffet meal with the man of the hour. Make new holiday memories as only Kennywood can!

Just because the summer is over, that doesn’t mean that the

Kennywood fun is over!

The Columbus Chapel & Boal Mansion Museum in Boalsburg, PA (just south of State College), offers visitors a remarkable view of American and European history through the lives of 8 generations of Boals who lived here. The Boals were prominent on the local, state, federal, and international stages. In the Boal Mansion, guests see a unique collection of original furnishings and artifacts, while an informed docent provides a lively discussion during the 1.5- to 2-hour guided tour. You experience Colonial America, learn about a thriving economy during the 1800s, and discover the many contributions of the Boal family to their community. In the Columbus Chapel, you view treasures from Renaissance Europe, including the most extensive collection of Columbus artifacts in North America.

The arrival of David Boal and his family from Ireland in 1789 marked the beginning of a long history of business, political, educational, military, and multicultural endeavors in which the Boals and their fascinating relatives were involved. Some of those far-flung relatives include: Richard Henry Lee, proposer and signer of the Declaration of Independence; Napoleon Bonaparte; General James de Trobriand; Simon Bolivar; and Theodore Davis, who discovered the tombs of Tutankhamen’s grandparents!

Christopher Columbus is certainly the most intriguing relative visitors find at the Museum. In 1908, Colonel Terry Boal’s wife, Matilde de Lagarde Boal, inherited from her aunt Victoria (widow of Diego Columbus) the contents of the Columbus family Chapel. Today you walk through the huge, carved wooden door into another time and learn about the beautiful paintings and sculptures, rich vestments, and the two pieces of the “True Cross.”

The Museum is open May 1–October 31, Tuesday–Sunday, 1:30–5:00 pm. Group tours can be arranged outside regular hours and year-round by reservation at 814-876-0129. Adults, $10; adults in groups of 10 or more, $8; children 6 to 17, $6; active members of the military, free.

During the guided tours, your class will learn about the history of anthracite coal mining, tour the inside of an underground coal mine, and hear the tale of the historic Centralia Mine Fire, which still burns today. Students participating in the tours will learn about Pennsylvania History, Geology, history of the Industrial Revolution, and the evolution of Child Labor Laws. This valuable hands-on experience, can be integrated into additional lessons after the tour.

In our gift shop we have a variety of educational and affordable merchandise for purchase including rocks, books, and youth toys. After your tours, your group can use our picnic area and playground to enjoy a packed lunch.

We are open 7 days a week April 1st - October 31st

Please call us today to book your field trip this season! Discounted rated are given for school trips.

The Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania offers the visitor a wealth of enlightening and entertaining history. Start your journey at Pioneer Tunnel with an intimate introduction to the natural resource that fired the Industrial Revolution.

A trip through Pioneer Tunnel today brings back some of the early miner’s lore - his way of life. You’ll ride 1800 feet into Mahanoy Mountain darkness on a mine motor to see glistening seams of coal as he did and feel the drops of water falling on your brow. The temperature inside the mine averages 52 degrees, so a sweater or jacket is recommended. The tour lasts about 35 minutes. Deep inside the mine, you will alight from your car and follow your miner-guide as you are told how coal is mined. Your guide will point out the numerous coal seams and describe various configurations of passageways. The tour is educational as well as entertaining. Later, you’ll emerge from the darkness, having seeing history unfold in front of your eyes.

Travel back through time on an old-time narrow-gauge steam locomotive, the Henry Clay. Built in the 1920s, The Henry Clay takes you on a scenic three-quarter mile ride around the

side of Mahanoy Mountain to show you another kind of mining called strip mining. You’ll also learn about the Centralia mine fire as you gaze across the valley to find smoke rising out of the ground. The entire tour lasts about 30 minutes.

Both rides are handicap accessible and appropriate for all ages.

For groups of 10 or more, we do prefer you’d make an advance reservation for your group. This reservation should be done at least one week in advance. For groups less than 10, reservations are not required. To arrange a group tour, email us at [email protected] or call 570-875-3850.

We have a community park and playground area here on the Pioneer Tunnel grounds for you to enjoy your lunch, whether you purchase it here, or pack a picnic lunch.

We hope to see you soon at Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train!

Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble was founded in 1978 to establish a resident professional ensemble for the production of quality entertainment and educational programs for the region, and to promote the arts. In 1980, BTE purchased the Columbia movie theatre in downtown Bloomsburg and reopened it in 1983

as the Alvina Krause Theatre, named in honor of the legendary acting teacher who was the Ensemble’s founding inspiration.

Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is unique in the United States and rare in the world; a resident ensemble that has over 30 years of experience together, BTE is comprised of both founding and new members to make up one of the most celebrated groups of artists in theatre. American Theatre Magazine calls BTE “a perfect illustration of commitment to place.”

With over 150 years of combined professional experience, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble remains committed to bringing professional theatre to our region.

BTE Theatre School brings children together to create, invent, laugh, and inspire.

BTE Theatre School helps families and educators in northeast Pennsylvania give their children an opportunity to explore theatre arts in a nurturing, creative and inspiring environment through affordable year-round workshops, classes, and summer camps for ages 3 to 100!

For more information on scheduling classes or programs, or attending our camps or workshops, please contact Education Director Amy Rene Byrne at

Our School Matinee Program and our Theatre In the Classroom (TIC) touring program share classical and contemporary plays as well as original adaptations of world folk literature and history with our young audiences. Through the power of live theatre we foster an appreciation for the arts and for theatre as a resource for living while opening a window on the world.

Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley, Inc., a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, founded in 1958 by Marjorie Berlin Fink, is dedicated to fostering the art of theatre dance, primarily classical ballet, through education and performances. This 49th consecutive production of The Nutcracker will feature approximately one hundred cast members composed of dancers from Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and adult community volunteers. Professional guest dancers will be announced on our website!

This year’s production will again be enhanced by live music, The Southside Sinfonietta, conducted by Eugene Albulescu, as well as a children’s choir, composed of Lehigh Valley school students.

A School Performance Guide is available for educators to use to prepare their students ahead of time about The Nutcracker ballet, music, and the arts. The guide includes ideas for classes studying this ballet, the history and storyline of the ballet (based on the tale by E.T.A. Hoffman), an article about Tchaikovsky’s music, and many other interesting features. The students are encouraged to draw and write about what they see at the performance. We have countless numbers of thank you notes and drawings that students have sent to us. For some children, this may be the only opportunity they have to see a ballet production of this type.

For more information about our organization or to receive a School Performance Guide, please e-mail [email protected], or call our office at 610-865-0353. You may also visit our website www.bglv.org to find out more about us.

A trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is sure to inspire learning in children of

all ages. From the rich history that can be found throughout the town and

the hallowed battlefield, to the idyllic countryside that houses a vibrant fruit

growing industry, the Gettysburg area has much to offer to those looking for an

unforgettable, educational experience.

Regardless of the time of year, there’s always something to do in Gettysburg.

There are plenty of museums that dive into the history and aftermath of the

Battle of Gettysburg, each focusing on a different angle such as the civilians’

experience during the battle or the life of a soldier during the Civil War.

Get an immersive, hands-on experience with the many living history

demonstrations. Talk with a soldier or a civilian of that time to get a personal

account of what happened during those three days in 1863.

You can tour the battlefield on your own at any time by car or foot, schedule a

tour with a licensed battlefield guide on a bus or even hop on a bicycle, Segway,

horse or carriage to experience the hallowed grounds.

Appreciate Gettysburg’s presidential history in Soldiers’ National Cemetery

where President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, or visit the farm of

President Eisenhower and learn about his and the first lady’s lives.

Just outside of Gettysburg is the Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve where children

can explore a variety of habitats and participate in the education programs

that are offered. Stop by the many farmers markets during the growing and

harvesting seasons to tour the facilities and learn about food production in

Adams County.

No matter the time of year, a trip to Gettysburg is sure to leave you inspired.

Visit LancasterHistory.org’s Campus of History and Wheatland, home of 15th US

President James Buchanan

Connect with Pennsylvania’s only US President James Buchanan, who served just

prior to the Civil War. Take a special hands-on tour of the mansion and explore unique

touchable objects from a time when there was no running water, no electricity, and

the only bathroom was an outdoor privy.

After your tour, consider taking one of our many interdisciplinary modules which

combine Wheatland’s history with fun real-life applications to challenge students’

mathematical, artistic, creative, and critical thinking skills. Students can play detective,

writer, artist, or advertiser as they further explore Victorian life. “It’s Elementary,

Watson” asks students to use deductive and inductive reasoning to determine the

use of Victorian Age artifacts. “It’s a Dog’s Life—A Day in the Life of Lara” is a creative

writing activity. And, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall” introduces students to symmetry

as they sketch the Presidential mansion. “Digging Deeper” is a workshop that uses

primary sources in Historical Research. A second workshop “Sleuthing through the

Past” asks students to play the detective in search of clues as they examine estate

inventories.

Just across the lawn you’ll find the headquarters of LancasterHistory.org—home to

multiple galleries, a Research Center with historic Archives, and a Museum Store. Not

to be missed--the exhibition: FREEDOM: “to secure the Blessings of Liberty” where

students explore the many faces of freedom gained, freedom denied in Lancaster

County. Unique objects, manuscripts, and artifacts tell the stories of struggle, survival,

joy and hope from Penn’s Holy Experiment through the 21st Century.

Spend an hour or spend the day and enjoy strolling through the Arboretum or

sharing a picnic on the lawn. To schedule your group tour or special module, contact

THE TIME IS NOW. It is difficult to ignore what happened in Charlottesville - prejudice, stereotypes and hate rearing their ugly heads. Youth are confused and scared by what they see/hear on the news and social media. As parent educators, it is our responsibility to shine a hopeful light, and to help them to understand the transformational power of respect, kindness, and diversity appreciation.

And while we can have conversations as adults, we need to UP our game with kids by creating more UPstanders. Charlottesville can – and should -- inspire all of us to do more.

Kidsbridge provides interactive, thought-provoking learning activities where children and teens collaborate with trained facilitators to explore tolerance, diversity appreciation and empowerment issues.

Specially attuned to home school families, Kidsbridge will customize social emotional skill programs to be fun, interactive and engaging. Parents can be included too. And most important, if Ewing, NJ is too far for your students to travel, Kidsbridge’s mobile outreach program can come to you; just assemble between 20 and 35 kids.

Kidsbridge is a safe and fun place where every participant learns how to:

• Examine bullying, name-calling, prejudice, discrimination and exclusionary behavior

• Recognize stereotypes and increase empathy• Practice bullying prevention, personal empowerment and helper/ally

techniques• Become an “UPstander” rather than a bystander• Mindfulness activities, to reduce stress and anxiety

Since 1996, Kidsbridge was and still is the only youth-dedicated tolerance center in the United States. It is a unique environment for preschool through eighth grade students and home school/ youth groups/summer camps to increase empathy, empowerment and diversity appreciation while learning bullying/cyberbullying prevention strategies.

Reinforce your homeschooler’s love of science and instill stewardship for the environment with the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC). Located on Sandy Hook, NJ where direct access to ocean, estuarine and barrier beach environments are all possible in one visit, NJSGC offers homeschool groups the opportunity to explore key coastal habitats and core science concepts through “hands-on,” inquiry-based learning experiences. Our full day, guided field trip programs are suitable for all grade levels and can accommodate small and large groups. Each program is interdisciplinary, supports STEM, history and social science literacy, and is correlated to state and national curriculum content standards.

Field trip activities include using a seine net to observe fish and other marine life or deploying a plankton net to collect microscopic organisms. Shovels and sieves are used to uncover bottom dwelling animals from the sediments of Sandy Hook Bay. Each group will work with an experienced NJSGC instructor and all sampling equipment from nets and test kits to chest waders are supplied.

At the ocean, homeschooler’s will be introduced to the beach as a natural habitat and will hike a portion of the beach to collect seashells and learn about the organisms that made them. Waves, tides, currents and other oceanographic forces that shape our shoreline will be discussed along with the connection the ocean has to weather, climate and all life on earth. At the beach, students will also be able to observe a well-vegetated dune system and learn how this natural feature can protect inland areas from the forces of coastal storms.

The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium is a not-for-profit group dedicated to increasing knowledge and stewardship of New Jersey’s coastal environment. For more information, visit our website at njseagrant.org or call us at 732-872-1300, ext. 13.

Hagley Welcomes HomeschoolersHagley Museum is the site of the original black powder works

of the DuPont Company, founded in Delaware in 1802 and

powered by the natural resources that surrounded it. Today

it is a place that inspires innovation, set on 235 acres of wooded rolling hills along the

rushing Brandywine River. Here, for more than 200 years, the DuPont Company and family

experimented, innovated, and pursued the American dream. Today educational programs are

offered for homeschoolers to deepen students’ understanding of science and technology.

For decades, Hagley has welcomed schoolchildren, from kindergarten to high school, for

hands-on, experiential learning through science, technology, and history programs. At Hagley,

students will satisfy their “STEM-tation!” through interactive programs that emphasize the

engineering of water power, simple machines making work easier, and materials and their

physical properties. Through Hands-on History programs, students will experience nineteenth-

century life and the Industrial Revolution while understanding their impacts on today’s world.

A visit by a homeschooler prompted Hagley to create Engineering Endeavors, which introduces

middle schoolers to different branches of engineering. “A homeschool parent approached

Hagley, after visiting our site, wanting a more in-depth experience for her eighth grade son

at Hagley,” said Jeff Durst, Education Program Manager. “Recognizing that there was a need

for such a program, we created Engineering Endeavors and first offered it to homeschool

students.” The six-week workshop series includes hands-on demonstrations, explorations

of Hagley’s extensive property, and open-ended challenges for participants. Engineering

Endeavors, offered in the spring and fall, is open to homeschoolers in grades six-eight.

Hagley offers seven programs that get kids active and outdoors, introduce them to historical

characters, and challenge them with hands-on activities and experiments. All Hagley school

programs are available to homeschool groups.

Visit www.hagley.org/education for details or call Jeff Durst

ANNAPOLIS MARITIME MUSEUM

The award-winning education programs of the Annapolis Maritime Museum

are delivered by a dedicated team of environmental educators. They are

happy to work with interested parents or homeschooling groups to design a

day of learning that will engage students and meet educational goals.

AMM recently expanded its education facilities to include a 12-acre urban

park located across Back Creek from the Museum. A renovated building

on the site has been converted into classrooms just steps away from the

water, creating the perfect environment for kids to learn and connect with

the Bay.

All AMM school programs are available to homeschool students year round.

Visit www.amaritime.org for a complete list of offerings or call 443-214-

Decades ago, the McNasby Oyster Packing Plant welcomed weary watermen,

exhausted from a long day’s work, to its docks. Oysters were hauled, counted,

and sorted, then brought inside to be shucked, cleaned, and canned in Tiffany-

blue tins. It was a true example of the power of the Chesapeake Bay to provide

for the people of the Annapolis region.

Today you are more likely to hear the laughter and buzzing of inquisitive children

than the sounds of watermen – though they do stop by to share their knowledge.

Touching oysters and crabs, kids excitedly ask questions as they gain an

understanding of the critical importance of the Chesapeake Bay in an outdoor

classroom accompanied by fresh air and lapping waters.

Just like the watermen of the Bay, eager learners can head out to the Museum’s

docks to check oyster cages. Seining along the living shoreline allows students

to see first-hand the habitat supported by the local oyster reefs – allowing them

to make connections between ecology, culture, and history.

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum provides an exciting educational experience and preserves the legend of airborne and special operations forces.

Visitors learn how the 48 volunteer members of the U.S. Army Test Platoon proved that soldiers could land on the battlefield by parachute and carry out tactical missions. The story is told of how, in the summer of 1940, the platoon developed training methods and tactical concepts that remain valid to this day, and in three years, the work of the fifty volunteers grew to a force of tens of thousands.

The museum presents the story of the genesis of airborne and special operations forces and their intertwined evolvement over the past six decades. From their inception, American airborne and special operations forces have continued to make dramatic and lasting contributions to our national security. Visitors learn how these remarkable soldiers carried out missions of classic strategic and tactical significance behind enemy lines. Time after time the heroic efforts of these airborne units were responsible for turning the tide of history, and those efforts are recounted at the museum.

The museum serves as a premier educational medium for active-duty personnel, their families, veterans and civilians of all ages. It serves Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina, and the entire country. The museum preserves and interprets the unique heritage of airborne and special operations forces for future generations, ensuring that “the legend continues.”

The extensive exhibits, large-screen theater production and motion simulator provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the legend. The museum provides special programming to enhance the curriculum of school children, emphasizing values education, and presents targeted educational programs developed for active-duty military personnel.

The museum incorporates core values as part of its educational program, teaching how personal actions and character have direct impact on the course of our society and our world. The museum allows us to realize that history is not something that happened to someone else a long time ago -- it is the story of who we are right now and why we, as Americans, are able to enjoy liberty and freedom.

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum, located in Fayetteville, NC, is part of the U.S. Army Museum System.

Where History Lives and Breathes

The Living History Park was the site of the former water-works department and had been overgrown and neglected for years. Donated materials and labor, grants, and a great deal of love, attention, and effort have turned this eyesore into an attraction for visitors in a tranquil setting complete with a natural spring. Since taking over management, OTPA has developed the following structures appropriate to the early colonial period of the area (1735–1785):
