WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA? DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 6:00 - 7:00 PM

Lymphedema can be a side effect of certain cancers, or cancer treatment. The swelling ranges from mild and hardly noticeable to extreme. Learn if you are at risk for lymphedema, complications, and treatment that can help reduce the swelling and discomfort.

PAINTING SUMMER

TUESDAY, JUNE 13, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Come join this fun workshop where we will use watercolor paints to create our own pictures of summer. Art in any form can lift one’s mood, boost self-awareness, improve eye-hand coordination and be a way for us to express feelings, emotions and creative thinking. No experience is needed, and materials will be provided. This class will be led by Debra Trafton, a local artist .

STRESS MANAGEMENT & SELF-CARE AFTER PROSTATE CANCER

In addition to the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, we all experience a wide variety of social, physiological, environmental and cognitive sources of stress. This presentation will assist you to understand the long term effects of unmanaged stress, the benefits of actively practicing stress management, and to create a personal stress management plan that you can put into action.

LIVING WITH SCARS

TUESDAY, JULY 11, 3:00 - 4:30 PM

Learn about how scars physically form and the potential complications/negative effects of scar tissue formation. Learn a gentle self-massage sequence for beginning to mobilize healed scar tissue, and participate in a group reflection about the obvious and the hidden challenges of living with scars. This class will be facilitated by Maria Phipps, LMT and Theresa Beaudette, LCSW.

Appropriate for cancer patients only.

PRESERVING THE HARVEST: CANNING & FREEZING 101

THURSDAYS, JULY 20, AUGUST 10, 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Ever wonder how to preserve all those great garden vegetables? University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s hands-on food preservation workshops will teach you the basics of canning and freezing, including how to use a hot water bath canner to preserve pickles, jam, and vegetables. Learn from the experts. We will provide fresh produce and canning jars. This class is presented by Dennis Connolly, UMaine Extension Master Food Preserver Volunteer.

LIFEFORCE YOGA

TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 6:00 - 7:15 PM

A gentle yoga workshop to learn breathing practices, movement, and sound to help soothe and balance the body and mind. A relaxing guided meditation will close the workshop.

WIND OVER WINGS

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 6:00 – 7:30 PM

When Hope Douglas was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 she took inspiration from injured birds. “They taught me how to carry on with dignity”, she said. “That’s how I approached cancer.” This workshop for the whole family will provide an opportunity for you to meet a Red-shouldered Hawk, Umbrella Cockatoo, Saw-whet Owl, Great Horned Owl and hear their heartwarming stories of struggle and survival.

This American Cancer Society program provides participants free makeup and teaches how to use cosmetics to look and feel your best.

M I N D A N D S P I R I TLIVING WELL

WEDNESDAYS, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

This program is open to adults with any type of cancer, at any point along the journey from diagnosis through survivorship, along with their adult family members and friends. Offered continuously, with a new theme introduced each month. Sessions include information, discussion, and guided exercises. See Support Groups for topics.

RADICAL ACCEPTANCE OF SELF AND BODY: RECLAIMING OUR CONNECTION

SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 10:00 - 11:30 AM

Adjusting to our bodies following a cancer diagnosis, surgery, or other treatment can disrupt our connection with ourselves and our loved ones. This single session workshop is a preview to a 4 week series that will be offered in the fall. Come and learn strategies for reclaiming your connection with your body.

Kids will relax, have fun, and learn to practice kindness to themselves and others. Recommended for ages 5-10, but can be flexible.

FIT FOR LIFE

MONDAYS, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM WEDNESDAYS, 5:30 - 6:30 PM

Do you want to be more flexible, have better balance and how to build cardio and muscular endurance? This class can help! Under the guidance of a fitness instructor the class will feature strengthening, balance, and flexibility exercise, combined with light to moderate movement.

PILATES YOGA

TUESDAYS, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Merges the benefits of Pilates and Yoga to develop core strength, tone muscles, increase flexibility, and help reduce stress.

YOGA FOR LIFE

THURSDAYS, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM AND6:00 - 7:00 PM

This is a gentle yoga class for all fitness levels. The focus is on range of motion movement, and gentle stretching. No experience with yoga required.

N U T R I T I O N A N D C O O K I N G 7

SOFT AND SMOOOOTH

TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 1:00 - 2:30 PM

A sore mouth and throat can have a significant impact on your ability to eat well during cancer treatment. This program will focus on very soft and nourishing foods as well as smoothies and other blender concoctions to help you maintain your nutrition throughout treatment.

Limited to 6.

SERIES II

TUESDAYS, JUNE 20, JULY 18, AUGUST 15, 3:00 - 4:00 PM

Come and enjoy this series which will feature produce harvested that day from our own Dempsey Center Community Garden!! We’ll discuss the health benefits of the produce, demonstrate quick, healthy and tasty preparation techniques, and send you home with the produce to try it at home. As part of our prevention programming, this class is open to anyone.

MAKING THE MOVE TO A PLANT-BASED DIET

THURSDAYS, JUNE 22 & 29, 3:00 - 4:30 PM

Are you contemplating a shift to more plant sources of protein, but aren’t sure where to begin? This 2-week workshop will provide you with the information you need, as well as recipes, food preparation demonstration, and tasting opportunities to get you on the right path.

Appropriate for anyone, limited to 25.

NUTRITION FOR LIFE: ANTI-CANCER MINI SERIES

TUESDAYS, JULY 18 & 25, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

This 2 part nutrition series explores the nuts and bolts of the anti-cancer diet and will feature topics like: Color your Diet, Meatless Meals Made Easy, and Fiberize for Better Health. We’ll discuss current nutrition research as it pertains to cancer and overall health. Each class will include cooking demonstrations and tasting opportunities.

Limited to 25.

TONICS AND ELIXIRS

THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Hydration is essential to your good health, but plain old water is not always very appealing. In this class we’ll explore some clear liquid beverages that are hydrating and supportive during cancer treatment and beyond.

Limited to 6.

COOKING CONSULTS!

Are you trying to improve your diet, but finding that your food preparation and /or cooking skills need a tune-up? Now you can set up a Cooking Consult with our Registered Dietitian and get some hands-on experience preparing nourishing food for yourself or your loved-one. Call the Center for more information or to schedule a consult.

Y O U T H A N D F A M I L YOur Healing Tree program is family centered and youth oriented. Due to the unique needs of young clients, a licensed youth and family counselor supervises and/or facilitates all programs.

TEEN ADVENTURE DAY WITH ON BELAY: RIPPLEFFECT

SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 7:00 AMCOW ISLAND

For the 2nd year, a group of Dempsey Center clients will join On Belay for one of their programs on Cow Island. The event will involve adventures on the High Ropes, island exploration, and playing in the water. Facilitated by Dempsey Center Youth and Family Counselor and On-Belay staff.

Appropriate for ages 8-18. Registration limited to 10.

CANCER EDUCATION 101

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 4:00 - 5:30 PM DEMPSEY CENTER AND CMMC

This special tour will teach children the basics of cancer in a way that they can understand and offer hands on experience to learning about cancer treatments in CMMC Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology departments. Parents are highly encouraged to attend.

Appropriate for ages 6+ and adult loved ones.Registration limited to 10.

The following services are available by making an appointment at the Dempsey Center. Some may require physician approval or medical clearance to participate.

COUNSELING SERVICES

Oncology counselors are available for patients and caregivers/loved ones to help promote coping. Short-term grief counseling is available to those who have lost a loved one to cancer.

LEGACY & LIFE REFLECTIONS

Professionally recorded interviews, exploring your most cherished memories, your deepest values, and lessons learned to share with others. You’ll receive a DVD of the interview, which may also include your favorite photographs and songs.

Available to patients living with advanced or metastatic cancer. Call 330-7737 to arrange an appointment.

WIGS AND HEAD WEAR CONSULTATION

Our trained staff will assist you with headwear options based on your goals and resource availability. Options include hats (for men and women), scarves, chemo caps and wigs.

BRA FITTINGS FOR MASTECTOMY PATIENTS

Free bra and breast prosthesis fittings.

ACUPUNCTURE

APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Register for one of our acupuncture clinics by calling the Center. Treatment occurs in one large room, where people relax in comfy recliners. The clinics are open to anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis within the last two years.

MASSAGE THERAPY

Massage therapy can help relieve anxiety, fatigue, musculoskeletal tension, difficulty sleeping and pain. Patients are eligible for eight massage sessions with physician approval. Primary caregivers are eligible for six sessions.

NUTRITION CONSULTATION

Healthy eating habits and good nutrition can help patients deal with the effects of cancer, before, during and after treatment. Our Dietitian will tailor a nutrition plan specific to your needs.

REIKI

A gentle technique intended to reduce stress and discomfort. Practitioners place their hands on, or just above your body.

WELLNESS FOR LIFE CONSULTATION

Our Wellness Specialist will help you establish personal fitness and wellness goals, and will be available to provide ongoing support.

TEEN GROUP

This group for adolescents ages 12+ offers a comfortable environment to talk, learn more about cancer, and engage in activities with other teens impacted by cancer. Adolescent, 15 minute Chair Massage sessions are offered every 3rd Thursday.

TOBACCO SUPPORT GROUP

THURSDAYS, 6:00 - 7:00 PMSt. Mary’s Hospital, 93 Campus Ave, Lewiston

Peer-facilitated, tobacco support group is open to anyone interested in quitting tobacco. This group is offered in collaboration with Healthy Androscoggin.

WOMEN’S CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

1ST & 3RD TUESDAYS, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

For women with any type of cancer, who are at any point along their journey, from diagnosis through survivorship. LIVING WELL
