the women’s side, Texas is not ranked. Both are receiving votes in the poll. Besides Colorado, there are 15 schools that have qualified both men’s and women’s teams. Those schools are: Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Furman, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi, NC State, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Stanford, Syracuse, Utah State and Washington.

HOW THEY GOT TO NATIONALS: The women won their fifth straight NCAA Mountain Region Championship to automati-cally move on to NCAAs, while the men’s team placed third and had to earn an at-large bid. The top-ranked women’s team led the whole way, running a very controlled and smart race to earn its ninth straight trip to the NCAA Championships, besting No. 2 New Mexico for the fifth consecutive year (62-70). Colorado’s men, which were ranked fifth nationally and third in the region, finished exactly on paper where they were supposed to finish. The Buffs ran a great race, finishing just one point behind No. 2 BYU (79-80). Northern Arizona won with 49 points.

INDIVIDUAL REGION CHAMPION: Sophomore Joe Klecker, who finished second at the Pac-12 Championships two weeks ago, had one of his best cross country races ever, defeating BYU’s Rory Linkletter by just one second (30:13.6-30:14.6). Klecker was 14th after the first two miles before jumping up to third at the three-mile split. He stayed there until the final portion of the race to become the first Buff since Billy Nelson [in 2005] to win the men’s region championship.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR: The top-ranked women’s team suffered its first loss of the season, recording 134 points in the 6k team race. No. 12 Oregon won the NCAA cham-pionship by one point over fifth-ranked Michigan (125-126). The Buffs had four females earn All-America honors: Dani Jones, Kaitlyn Benner, Mackenzie Caldwell and Sage Hurta. The second-ranked men finished the 10k race sixth overall with 223 points. Top-ranked Northern Arizona won the meet with 125 points and No. 5 Stanford placed second overall (158). Three men were named to the All-America team: Ben Saarel, Joe Klecker and John Dressel. ALL-REGION AWARDS: Mark Wetmore was named the USTFCCCA Mountain Region Women’s Coach of the Year, while sophomore Joe Klecker was named the USTFCCCA Mountain Region Men’s Athlete of the Year. Wetmore guided the top-ranked Colorado women to their fifth straight region championship as the Buffs bested second-rated New Mexico, 62-70. The Buffs also captured their third consecutive, fourth overall, Pac-12 Conference title on Oct. 27. This is the ninth time Wetmore has earned the honor for coaching the women, while it’s his 21st overall honor as he has been named the men’s region coach of the year 12 times. Klecker won the men’s NCAA Mountain Region title in 30:13.6. He also placed runner-up at the Pac-12 Champion-ships and was ninth at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational. He is the first Buff since Billy Nelson in 2005 to win a men’s individual region crown. All-Region honors were given to 10 Buffs as the top-25 in each race are honored. Makena Morley, Dani Jones, Sage Hurta, Kaitlyn Benner, Brianna Schwartz and Melanie Nun were honored on the women’s side, while Joe Klecker, Zach Perrin, Ryan Forsyth and Eduardo Herrara recorded honors on the men’s side.

ALL-PAC-12 AWARDS: Several Buffaloes earned Pac-12 Honors on Oct. 31, as announced by the conference. Head

Coach Mark Wetmore was named the Pac-12 Women’s Coach of the Year and junior Dani Jones was named the Pac-12 Women’s Athlete of the Year in addition to several others earning all-conference honors. Wetmore guided the women’s team to their third straight Pac-12 team title last Friday; the fourth overall title since joining the Pac-12 Conference in 2011. This is the fourth time he’s earned the award on the women’s side and it is the 31st overall time Wetmore has been named the conference coach of the year including both Big 12 and Pac-12 honors. Jones is the first CU runner to earn Pac-12 Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the championship last Friday in 18:57.3. Jones pulled away from Neale and course-record holder Katie Rainsberger over the final 100 meters for the victory. It marked Jones’ third Conference title in the calendar year as she also captured the 1,500- and 5,000-meter crowns at the 2017 Pac-12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Buffs also had seven individual harriers, four men and three women, named to the 2017 All-Pac-12 Teams. Jones earned first team honors, while senior Kaitlyn Benner and sophomore Sage Hurta were named to the second team. On the men’s side, junior Ryan Forsyth and sopho-more Joe Klecker were named for the first team, while redshirt

freshman Eduardo Herrera and senior Adam Peterman were selected to the second team. All-Pac-12 teams are determined by an athlete’s placing at the Pac-12 Championship. First team members include the first through seventh place finishers, while those who place eighth through 14th earn a position on the second team.

USTFCCCA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Days after winning her first Pac-12 Cross Country Championship, junior Dani Jones was named the USTFCCCA Division I Women’s Athlete of the Week. She is the first Buff to ever record the honor. In the USTFCCCA Poll, the Colorado women moved back up to first, while the men held steady at fifth. Jones won the 2017 championship in exciting fash-ion. She surged ahead of Washington’s Amy-Eloise Neale, the 2016 champion, and Oregon’s Katie Rainsberger, the course record-holder, to win the individual crown in 18:57.3. Jones is the first Buff to win an individual cross country title in the Pac-12 and first since Jenny Barringer (Simpson) to win an individual conference title since 2009. Jones led the CU women to their third straight title, defeating Oregon 53-71, which helped to propel them up the USTFCCCA Poll from third to first.

FOUR IN SEVEN YEARS: The CU women’s team has won four of the seven Pac-12 titles since joining the league in 2011. The Buffs won the inagural title in 2011, defeating Washington 50-73. They won again in 2015, this time besting Oregon 45-51. CU made it two straight in 2016 when the Buffs handily defeated Washington 33-74. CU made it a three-peat when they defeated Oregon 53-71 in 2017.

HIGHEST PAC-12 FINISH: When Joe Klecker recorded a second place finish at the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 27, he became the highest placing Buff ever at the conference championship. Prior to Klecker’s runner-up performance, the best finish was Ben Saarel’s third-place finish in 2016. It’s not the best finish in overall conference history for the Buffs though as several won individual conference titles prior to CU joining the Pac-12.

THE STREAK IS OVER: After winning the first six Pac-12 titles since the league expanded to 12 teams in 2011, the Buffs saw their streak come to an end on Oct. 27 as Stanford bested CU 41-47. The Cardinal had three of the top four finishers, which ultimately helped SU take down the Buffs.

LEADING THE WAY: Since joining the conference in 2011, the women’s team has more Pac-12 Championships (four) than any other team, with Oregon winning two and Arizona one.

MORE THAN 70 PERCENT: The Buffs have won 10 of 14 possible cross country championships since 2011, which is .714 percent. The men have come away with six titles, while the women have won four.

WETMORE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: For coach Mark Wetmore, the 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Conference Cham-pionship is the 33rd since he became coach prior to the 1996 season. He won 23 championships in the Big 12 and now has 10 in the Pac-12. He has more conference championships than any coach in CU history. Under Wetmore, the Buffs have claimed 33 of a pos-sible 44 conference championships, 23 of a possible 30 in the Big 12 and 10 of a possible 14 in the Pac-12.

CONFERENCE HISTORY: The Buffs have had a habit of doing well at the conference meet no matter what the confer-ence. The men have won a total of 28 championships and have been the runner-up 19 times, including in 2017. The lowest finish the men have ever recorded was eighth in 1960.

They have never placed lower than second since 1990 when they were sixth at the Big Eight Championships. The men have also won the first six Pac-12 Conference team titles (2011, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16). The women have also done well. They have won 19 titles, four in the Pac-12, and placed second eight times since 1976. The women have never placed lower than sixth at the conference meet.

WHAT IS IN A POLL: Both CU teams are ranked in the top-five of the latest USTFCCCA Division I Coaches Poll. The women are first, while the men are fifth. They are both the highest ranked Pac-12 team in each poll.

COMBINED RANKINGS: The Buffs have a combined rank-ing of six in the recent USTFCCCA Poll with the women first and the men fifth. The next highest combined team score is Stanford at 10 (men sixth, women fourth).

PAC-12 RECAP: For the third straight year, the Colorado women’s cross country team reigned supreme as the Pac-12 Conference Cross Country Champions, taking home the title at the Springfield Golf Club on Oct. 27. In addition to the team win, CU’s Dani Jones, a junior, took home the individual championship, becoming the first Buff since Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (2009) to win a confer-ence title. The men’s team ended up with a second-place finish, finishing behind Stanford by just six points (41-47), which was the identical score that CU recorded in 2016 when it

PAC-12 CROSS COUNTRY

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Colorado senior Kaitlyn Benner has been named the Pac-12 Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Friday prior to the racing of the conference championships. The award, which is presented in each of the 23 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline. Benner is a two-time NCAA Cross Country All-American and is majoring in chemical and biological engineering. Through her first six semesters at CU, she has recorded a 3.93 grade point average. Benner has been a member of the Dean’s list all six semesters and has recorded a 4.0 GPA three times. She has been a Pac-12 All-Academic First Team member twice and a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection three times. The Superior, Colo., native has been named to the All-Pac-12 First Team twice; she was the runner-up in 2015 and was fourth in 2016. Benner has also earned all-region recognition all three years – her highest finish at regionals was a second-place finish in 2015. In her time with the Buffs, she has helped the team to back-to-back Pac-12 team titles (2015 and 16), as well as an NCAA runner-up finish in 2015 and a third-place finish in 2016. This is the second straight year the Buffs have earned the honor on the women’s side as Erin Clark was the women’s recipient in 2016. In total, four Buffs have earned the award in the last three years. Morgan Pearson (2015) and Ben Saarel (2016) won the men’s honor back-to-back years.

defeated the Cardinal to win its sixth straight Pac-12 title.

PRE-NATIONALS RECAP: CU recorded a pair of runner-up team finishes on Oct. 14 at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The seventh-ranked men’s team finished second to No. 2 BYU. The Cougars tallied a score of just 41 points, while the Buffs totaled 118 points. CU finished ahead of Pac-12 rival, No. 8 Oregon, which picked up 129 points. Joe Klecker placed ninth overall to lead CU. The top-rated women suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to second-ranked Oregon, 63-91. No. 9 Arkansas came in third overall (148). Dani Jones recorded a third-place individual finish.

NUTTYCOMBE RECAP: The Buffs sent their emerging varsity teams to compete at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13 and got some great results. The women’s team won the ‘B’ race, defeating run-ner-up, Michigan State, 35-60. Melanie Nun led the women with a second place finish. The men placed second to Stanford, 60-66, and out-ran Michigan State, which was third with 78 points. Mark Tedder was the top harrier for CU, finishing second overall.

JOE PIANE INVITE RECAP: In a cross country showdown between a pair of top-five programs, top-ranked Colorado and third-rated New Mexico, it was the Buffaloes who took home the victory, besting the Lobos by four points (47-51) at the Joe Piane Invitational. The Buffs and Lobos each placed four athletes in the top-10 of the 5-kilometer race and were the only two teams in the field of 20 to score less than 100 points. The third place finisher, No. 12 NC State, tallied 118 points, while No. 9 Arkansas took fourth with 171 points. On the men’s side, the fourth-ranked Colorado men’s team placed second in the 5-mile blue race with 101 points. Southern Utah, which came into the meet ranked 13th, won with 72 points. Air Force was third overall with 154 points.

RMS RECAP: In what has become a tradition, CU won both the men’s and women’s team titles in the 32nd running of the Rocky Mountain Shootout at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU’s South Campus. Both teams performed quite well. The women scored 16 points to best Northern Colorado (42) in the NCAA Division I race, while the men totaled 17 points to best Air Force (55), Colorado State (76) and Northern Colorado (93). Val Constien was second in the women’s race, finish-ing in 21:34; while Chris Herrick placed fifth (25:54) to lead the men.

RMS MEET HISTORY: CU’s men have won the last 27 shootout titles and 28 of the last 32. The women have won 19 straight titles and 25 of the last 26 races.

32 YEARS OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOOTOUT: The Buffs hosted the 32nd Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 30. The race has become one of the longest running meets in the nation. Oklahoma State’s Cowboy Jamboree is in its 81st year, and the Stanford Invitational is running its 44th race this season. The Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. started one year before the RMS. Iowa State ran the Iowa State Memorial for 32 years, running the last one in 2003.

CSU RECAP: CU started the season off on a strong note, winning the men’s and women’s team titles at the Colorado State Invitational on Sept. 1. The men’s team handily defeated the rest of the field, totaling just 22 points, while the runner-up, Air Force, was second with 66 points. The women’s race was much closer

with the Buffs besting Colorado State by one point (35-36). Ethan Gonzales won the men’s race, finishing the 5k race in 14:51. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team, placing fourth in 17:37. CSU INVITE RECAP: Both the men and women won the CSU Invite on Sept. 1 to start the 2017 season. Ethan Gon-zales won the individual title in the men’s race to lead the Buffaloes as they recorded 22 points. Brianna Schwartz led the women’s team with a fourth place finish as they tallied a score of 35 points.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS: The Buffaloes return six All-Americans this season, four women and two men. Senior Kaitlyn Benner is a two-time All-American, while juniors Mackenzie Caldwell and Dani Jones, along with sophomore Sage Hurta, all earned the honor in 2016 for the first time. For the men, junior John Dressel is a two-time All-American and sophomore Joe Klecker was a 2016 All-American.

THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE REALITY: Colorado head coach Mark Wetmore enters his 26th season at Colorado, his 23rd as head coach. He became CU’s sixth head cross country and track and field coach on November 6, 1995. Wetmore is the only Division I cross country coach to win all four NCAA titles – men’s and women’s team and men’s and women’s individual – at the same school. Wetmore’s squads have won seven national cross country titles since 2000. The women won in 2000 while the men won the following year. Both teams captured the cham-pionship again in 2004 (CU became only the third school to win both championships in the same year). The men won again in 2006, 2013 and 2014. Wetmore has coached Adam Goucher (1998), Jorge Torres (2002) and Dathan Ritzenhein (2003) to men’s individual cross country titles, while Kara Grgas-Wheeler won the 2000 women’s crown. CU athletes have earned 122 All-American cross country honors during his tenure. Wetmore has been named the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year twice (’00 and ’04) and the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year three times (‘06, ‘13 and ‘14). He is a 30-time conference coach of the year and in 2014, USA Track and Field named him the USA Co-Coach of the Year. In addition to national titles, his teams won 23 Big 12 Cross Country Team Titles (11 women’s, 12 men’s), 16 individual Big 12 Cross Country Titles and Wetmore was named Big 12 Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 19 times. He was the winningest Big 12 Conference head coach among all sports when CU left the conference in 2011. CU joined the Pac-12 Conference in the fall of 2011 and Wetmore’s teams won the inaugural Pac-12 men’s and women’s titles – the first Pac-12 Championships in any sport. His men have won the first six titles after joining the league in 2011 and his women have won four (2011, ‘15, ‘16 and ‘17). On the track, Wetmore’s athletes have had a strong presence at the conference, national and professional lev-els. They’ve captured 100 individual conference titles, two conference team titles, 16 NCAA individual titles and earned 183 All-American honors. CU athletes have broken seven collegiate middle and long distance records. CU runners’ success at the professional and post-collegiate level is unmatched by any university: over two dozen Buff grads have signed professional contracts. They’ve combined for more than 49 USA titles in cross country, track & field and road racing. Since 2000, 10 CU athletes or graduates have earned 19 U.S. Olympic Team berths at distances from 1,500-meters through the mara-thon. Fourteen current and former Buffs have earned 31 spots on U.S. World Championship Track Teams and 25 have combined for 61 berths on U.S. World Champion-ship Cross Country Teams. Since 2004, CU graduates have won seven medals in distance running at World Champion-ships – Shayne Culpepper (bronze, 2004 Indoor 3k), Kara Goucher (silver, 2007 10k), Dathan Ritzenhein (bronze, 2009 Half Marathon), Jenny Simpson (gold, 2011 1,500m and sil-ver, 2013 and 2017 1,500m) and Emma Coburn (gold, 2017 steeplechase). Coburn (steeplechase) and Simpson (1,500) became the first to win Olympic medals, both bronze, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. They were the first American women to medal in their respective events. Charles Mark Wetmore graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Rutgers in 1978 before receiving his Master’s in movement sciences from Columbia in 1998. He lives in the mountains west of Boulder.

SUCCESS IN THE WETMORE ERA - Mark Wetmore is the only coach in NCAA history to win all four NCAA titles (men’s and women’s team and men’s and women’s individual) at a university.

MEN - 12 of 15 Big 12 Championships - 6 of 7 Pac-12 Championships - Five NCAA Team Championships - Three NCAA Individual Champions - 17 Consecutive top-10 NCAA team finishes - 76 All-Americans

WOMEN - 11 of 15 Big 12 Championships - 4 of 7 Pac-12 Championships - Two NCAA Team Championships - One NCAA Individual Champion and three runner-ups - Eight Big 12 Individual Champions - One Pac-12 Individual Champion - 46 All-Americans
