A Letter from CentrAL’ s Pres ident

Dear Friends of Central,

Innovation is woven into the fabric of creation. God calls into being a world suitable for the flourishing of many creatures, yet it is an unfinished world. The human commission is to be God’s partner in the continuous fashioning of our terrestrial home.

A theological school is dependent upon its capacity to innovate. The needs of churches change; the nature of mission changes; hence, the preparation for ministry changes. It is a wonderful thing to reflect on Central’s long history, and we recognize that without innovation our history would have been foreshortened. The dynamic God continues to call us forward, prompting new forms of accessible ministry preparation.

In this new season, our challenge is to Embrace Change, and Inspire Leadership. We are accomplishing this through our technologically enhanced mode of delivery, our accent on leadership development, and our recognition that we are global, personal, and horizonal.

When a seminary describes itself as global, it is a clear recognition that God is at work throughout the world and that we benefit from participating in the larger reality of global Christianity. There was a time in the colonial period when mission meant Europe and North America exported culture along with faith, often with little respect for the dignity and mores of those being evangelized. Missionaries traveled on the same ships as traders of the East India Company. Still, today's indigenous leaders hold the missionary legacy in high regard even as they long for a more contextual expression of their faith.

Theological education is personal. Every learner has value; every one bears the image of God and is suffused with the Holy Breath of God. We all desire to be known and encouraged in our unique embodiment of humanity.

Faculty members excel in knowing students and forming them as good ministers of Christ Jesus, from whom we attempt to teach everything we have learned. The character faculty bear shapes learners, and their graceful imprint endures.

As technologically enhanced theological education grows, some fear this would make it impossible to form true community and that the personal touch would be lost. Good pedagogy transcends distance, and deep connections ensue.

Horizonal may not be a word you use regularly. It often gets changed to “horizontal” with that affliction we call “autocorrect.” Horizonal means to see beyond the present, to look beyond the present horizon for what comes next. Leadership is about seeing what is coming before it is here, anticipating how we will need to change ahead of time.

Innovation is a response to the prompting of God’s Spirit who continues to nudge us toward new horizons. Thank you for making it possible to follow this nudging, historically and into the future.

Faithfully yours,

Molly T. Marshall President and Professor of Theology and Spiritual Formation

CommuniTea: Serving God Through InnovationClaire Chadwick (2014 MDiv), CommuniTea Cafe and Hospitality Manager

When I moved to Kansas City to begin attending Central Baptist Theological Seminary, I was, as we Christians like to say, in a valley of my life. I was in a new city, knew very few people, was at a new school, and couldn’t find a job. Eventually I was hired at the Starbucks located across the street from Central. I continued to work there during my seminary studies. Not only did I learn Dr. Molly T. Marshall’s usual drink by heart (triple grande heavy cream latte without a stopper), but so much more.

The dynamics of a coffee shop are, in many ways, parallel to that of the church. We worked together in a very tight space and saw each other often during stressful situations, which meant we had no choice but to form meaningful relationships. My Family Systems Theory classes were extraordinarily helpful in understanding and working within the coffee shop system. What I loved most were the genuine human connections that I was able to form with my fellow baristas and with loyal customers. I got to see customers get married, have children, and lose loved ones. Customers formed such bonds with us that they brought us Christmas gifts, celebrated with us, and cried when we had to move on.

I loved being able to serve others with a heart of hospitality and warmth. I could show someone the love of Christ just by being kind in a stressful situation. In what other job could I find such deep, genuine human relationships in the midst of common, ordinary living? I can think of one. A barista’s role is actually not far from that of pastor. Each has a heart to serve with love and show hospitality to strangers. (I hear some have entertained angels in such a way without realizing it!)

When I was approached by the Rev. Dr. Wallace Smith, pastor of Journey Community Church, with his new idea for opening a coffee shop church, I knew that in the midst of that valley, God had been preparing me for my own unique calling to an innovative form of ministry. Why was Starbucks the only job I could find when I first moved here? This was why. Here was a new and unique ministry where we would combine the love of coffee and tea, the ambiance of a coffee shop, the love of Jesus Christ, and the desire to serve others.

CommuniTea, a wholly separate entity, partners with Journey Community Church for ministry. CommuniTea offers space, relationship, and a chance to chat without the pressure of profit-making. We are a gathering place for a variety of individuals and groups who use this space for meeting and sharing with one another. Can we get more church-like than that?

Living and working in downtown Overland Park, Kansas, we are situated to get to know our neighbors in ways that churches often struggle to do. Instead of asking our community to come to us and worship in our sanctuary, we have created a common “sanctuary,” an everyday living, eating, and working space. We love it. We love each type of person that comes through those doors. And I know that God is working through us to be the church in this new and innovative way.

2017 Commencement Yields Firsts in Participation and Outstanding Scholarship

평화와 정의상 (the peace and justice)과 뛰어난 사역상 (Excellence in ministry)은 그 이름과 어울리는 영역들과 관련된 상들입니다.

We had a marvelous day of celebration in our new 21st Century Learning Center on May 13. About 350 people gathered to witness the Commencement ceremony for 36 of the 58 graduates who completed their diploma and degree programs this year.

As President Molly T. Marshall reflected in her post-Commencement blog,

Though we were packed in a bit, we rejoiced in being home for the school’s 115th Commencement. Now that the most recent building project has been completed, we have space for our varied traditions: the blessing of women graduates; celebration of alum achievement; and post-graduation reception. With the addition of the Smith Courtyard, we can spill out of the building into a lovely outdoor venue.

In addition to those who were on campus for the celebration, this year – for the first time in the seminary’s history – the event was livestreamed for those who could not be in Kansas City in person. Anyone from Central’s global community could join in the celebration by logging in from their own computer or tablet.

One of the highlights of the Commencement ceremony is the awards presented to outstanding graduates. The awards in biblical interpretation, history, preaching, theology, and writing are self-explanatory. These graduates showed expertise in their work for the courses in these disciplines. Ostensibly, the peace and justice award and the award for excellence in ministry have something to do with the subjects for which they are named; however, the stories of the recipients who received them gives more evidence for the reason these particular students were recognized.

Peace and Justice award recipient, Bernadette Arellano, has a long history of working in non-profit work, particularly the Milwaukee Christian Center, where she currently runs the food bank. She also serves as ministry associate for Broken Walls Christian Community, a faith community that practices radical inclusivity. Sun Hee Kim, who also received this award, is a minister in Seoul, South Korea. While it is not considered acceptable for Korean ministers to be involved in political matters, Kim felt compelled, because she was a Christian, to participate in the recent candlelight demonstrations held in protest of the actions of President Park Geun-hye, who was subsequently impeached.

The McBride/Eddy award was given this year to two women and two men – one of each for the English and Korean programs.

McBride/Eddy

Even while managing a successful business, during his last year of classes, Steve Roberts served a small rural congregation faithfully and with effectiveness. He could see the potential this small congregation had and worked hard to help them realize it. He seemed joyful in doing this ministry, and demonstrated significant commitment, giving far more time and energy than what was expected. His mentor expressed high regard for him and the ministry he was doing, and specifically mentioned his warmth, communications skills, and professionalism.

The 2017 graduating class with Central faculty in the Vier Garden on the Kansas City campus

in Kyun Woo, at 66 years of age, is a lifelong learner, who is known for his servant leadership. He serves as an assistant pastor in a Korean American church in the Kansas City area and will be ordained later this year. His very active presence in online classes and desire always to be learning something new was impressive to his classmates, even more so when they learned he was well beyond retirement age.

The Tennessee group of create MDiv students, who are a part of the Leadership Development for Women Initiative, met in January at Conception Abbey with Tennessee faculty and President Marshall.

EyeRei Yoo devoted her life as a Korean missionary to Thailand before she came to Kansas. She had learned the Thai language but then found a need to learn Lao to serve the unreached people of Issan in northeast Thailand. Upon learning that she could not complete her required internship for Dr. Kwangsup Shin’s ministry dynamics class with a Korean church, she researched and discovered a Lao church in Kansas. Former Central student and pastor of the church, the Rev. Theodore “Ted” Khongmaly, agreed to be her mentor. Upon completing her assignment, the church, who welcomed her as one of their own because of her background, made her an assistant pastor, and she is currently preparing for ordination.

Finally, the presidential citation is awarded to those students who achieved the highest grade point average. Mark Harmon will begin serving in July as the Associate Pastor of Caring Ministries at Saint Andrew Christian Church (DOC) in Olathe, Kansas. In this role he will be responsible for the development, oversight, and coordination of responses to the varied care needs of the members of our members and for the community at-large. In addition, he will be working with members of the community to establish interfaith and interracial dialog with the hope of promoting reconciliation and healing.

Dr. Pam Durso, Executive Director of Baptist Women in Ministry, gave the Commencement address, "Does This Look Like Friendship?"

Eyerei Yoo and In Kyun Woo, Korean Program, were recipients of the award for Excellence in Ministry. For more of Eyerei's story, visits the Central Scholars Reflect blog at cbts.edu.

Sun Hee Kim, Korean Program, received the Peace and Justice award.

Patti Ulrich has also been a conscientious and focused student and minister. She gave evidence of significant spiritual depth, human sensitivity, the capacity to care for others, and effective ministry. Central and International Ministries

renew partnership in FOUNDATIONS

Judson Communities Program

Dr. John Gravley, Vice President for Institutional Advancement

When Central was confronted with the need for theological education classes for Karen, Chin, KaChin, and other church leaders from Burma (Myanmar) now living in the US, it seemed to be a good use of resources to partner with International Ministries missionaries Duane and Marcia Binkley who were already working with many of these leaders. From the fall of 2011 the Binkleys worked as directors of this program. With their guidance, the program served over 350 students in locations throughout the US.

In a mutually supportive partnership, Central and International Ministries worked collaboratively to support this ministry. International Ministries provided the employment and assisted with their funding. Central provided the framework for the FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities ministry certificate program and helped design the actual course offerings.

Approximately one year ago, the Binkleys retired from their role with International Ministries and the leadership of the FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities program. Central worked with them to find a new director of the program, since it clearly was meeting an important need. As we worked to find a new director, we learned that International Ministries was also interested in maintaining a connection with this program.

When Central found the new director, Ms. Marlene Po, a member of the Calvary Burmese Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., International Ministries suggested a way for us to continue working together.

Central Seminary Appoints New Leader of Doctoral StudiesRobin Sandbothe, Director Of Seminary Relations

During the recent Central Seminary trustee meeting, the board voted to appoint Dr. John Sungchang Park as the Des Peres Assistant Professor of Congregational Health and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program. His work with the seminary will begin on July 1.

Dr. Ircel Harrison, who has been serving as the interim director of the doctor of ministry program, said this about Dr. Park’s appointment:

Dr. Park brings both strong academic training and professional experience to this position. In addition, he has an approachable presence and encouraging spirit that will serve him well as he works with students and faculty.

Dr. Park, who earned his PhD in leadership studies with a ministry concentration from Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas, this May, has been serving as the site director for Central Seminary’s Dallas site since 2016. He has also served as an adjunct professor for that site since 2015 and for Dallas Baptist University since 2012. Dr. Park also served as coordinator of the doctor of ministry program for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, from 2001-2005.

In addition to teaching and administrative experience, Park has considerable ministry experience. Since 1999 he has held youth and associate pastor positions for churches in Texas and California, as well as filled the role of Executive Consultant, Marketplace Chaplains, in Plano, Texas, from 2014 to the present.

Dr. Terrell Carter, Director of Contextualized Learning and Assistant Professor of Practical Theology for Central Seminary, led the search process for the position and had this to say about Dr. Park:

I am pleased that the search process led us to Dr. Park. As we spent more time with him, it became clear that he possessed many of the traits that we hope our doctoral students would exhibit. He brings to the position a tangible enthusiasm and willingness to do what is in the best interest of the seminary, a willingness to be a life-long learner, the ability to communicate and network with multiple people groups, and a desire to be a servant leader. I think that the seminary as a whole will be blessed through his service as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program.

Dr. Park expressed enthusiasm for his new role:

I am very excited to be part of and to serve the Central community, which President Marshall recently described as global, personal, and horizonal. I want to be able to incarnate the Central spirit as the new Doctor of Ministry Director and assistant professor. I want to connect with and learn from all of my colleagues, I want to grow as a follower of the Triune God, and I want to lead through serving, communicating, and innovating.

Rev. Leslie Turley, Area Director of Southeast Asia and Japan for International Ministries, said, “This is exciting! Marlene is such a wonderful person and well equipped for this area of service. I am glad we can continue this partnership.” Central is also thrilled to be able to continue this partnership, which allows the efforts of each organization to expand their reach beyond what might otherwise be possible.

Marlene Po began as the new director for the FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities program in December 2016.

Discovering Central Just Got EasierRobin Sandbothe, Director Of Seminary Relations

For those who are seeking a way to follow God’s call and want to find a great place to become prepared, Central Seminary has launched a new one-page online recruiting site. The sole purpose of the page is to introduce Central’s academic programs. A simple design focuses prospective students on that page for basic information to get them started in the process of discerning their next steps.

Paired with digital marketing methods, the site allows prospective students to find Central easily while doing websearches around key words, such as “seminary,” “master of divinity,” “online,” or “theological curriculum.”

Through easy online forms accessed on that page or phone calls made to a dedicated admissions line, the site invites inquiries that can be tracked easily. Although Central has tracked such information along the way, this plan is more intentional and will help to provide seamless connections from initial contact to a successful student experience – one that begins even before a student is actually a student! The research generated by this data will also support a commitment to the component of the seminary’s strategic plan related to research and data analysis.

The site was launched in early March and includes general information about the seminary’s mission and values, basic degree information, how Central approaches financial support, as well as a section on frequently asked questions.

Vice President for Marketing and Community Engagement Francisco Litardo shared his vision for the new site:

This exciting partnership between the academic department and the newly created Marketing and Community Engagement role at Central will yield new opportunities to engage potential students in a dynamic way, allow us to live out a robust student success plan lifecycle, and to adjust to marketing opportunities through the use of data generated by search engine marketing.

Visit apply.cbts.edu to discover how Central is a new generation seminary that offers an innovative way of doing theological education for a new era.

Internet-Mediated Education at Central Transcends the Traditional Online ModelNathan Huguley, Recruitment Officer

As a new generation seminary, Central is honored to be among the first seminaries to be accredited by the Association of Theological Schools to offer our Master of Divinity degree online. This makes our online Master of Divinity degree available for all approved locations and states in the U.S. and around the world – virtually anywhere with a broadband internet connection. It also means that you can complete the entire degree without ever having to come to our campus or to any of our satellite sites.

This degree is no series of depersonalized, disembodied correspondence courses, though. We have worked for several years to design a curriculum and a class structure that gives students ample opportunities to be in class with their fellow students and professors through videoconferencing technology.

With a combination of our videoconferencing infrastructure and our online learning platform, we offer hybrid classes that bring together the best aspects of online distance learning with the advantages of being in a face-to-face learning environment. Our online synchronous sessions are an integral part of each course and provide students the opportunity to dialog with their instructors and with other students face to face in real time, as though they were only across the table rather than across the country. In keeping with Central’s core value of making our programs accessible and flexible, these sessions are offered in the evenings. Most full-time professionals are able to continue to pursue their career, whether in ministry or any other field, while they complete their theological studies.

The Master of Arts (Theological Studies) degree utilizes the same format. In addition, we continue to invest in online library holdings and databases of online academic journals. In this way, the research integral to our degree programs is accessible from almost anywhere in the U.S. and abroad with a broadband internet connection. Much like the online MDiv students, MATS students will participate in hybrid classes that include both synchronous videoconferencing class meetings and asynchronous assignments.

If you are looking for an affordable, accessible, flexible, internet-mediated theological education, contact our recruitment office at 913.667.5711 or email [email protected]. More information is also available at apply.cbts.edu.

Nathan Huguley is a 2017 MDiv graduate of Central who participated in classes at the CENTRAL Tennessee site. He has firsthand experience with taking courses offered in the described format and has been assisting with recruitment for Central for about a year.

Our new technology in operation - cameras to capture a view of the classroom, screens to see the online students, laptop views of class online and face-to-face participants, and controls to make it all happen.

Central’s Horizonal View dr. david May, Professor of New testamentand director of the Master of Arts (Theological Studies) degree Program

One phrase captures well a foundational characteristic of Central Seminary—“Always an eye on the horizon.” Central throughout its 116-year history has always attempted to consider thoughtfully the horizonal view, what is just over the edge of sight, in relationship to teaching, curriculum, sustainability, and innovation.

In Central’s early days, she innovated by owning and operating a farm. The pole beans, poultry, and potatoes not only helped fill students’ stomachs but also helped defray the cost for struggling ministry students. Finding creative ways to be sustainable financially has always been a hallmark of Central’s eye to the horizon.

Central also innovated by establishing in the 1930s a seminary publishing company, Central Seminary Press. Looking to find ways to disseminate knowledge and insights to minister and laity alike, Central for decades used the printed and published books to communicate foundational biblical and social values beyond the classrooms of the seminary.

In the 1980s, Central was one of the first graduate schools of theology to deliver quality theological education away from the seminary campus—a seminary without walls. This resulted in the Long Distance Learning program that used the most advance technology of the time: videos and phone conferencing. With the ever advancing (or perhaps better, the avalanche) of technology, Central has currently created one of the premier technologically-enhanced education curriculums in the country. By way of computer-mediated learning, the new Central curriculum uses methods of pedagogy and cutting edge technology for deep theological engagement and a fully-embodied experience of spiritual formation.

The innovations that Central has experimented with and embraced over the years are not changes just for the sake of change, or changes because of fleeting trends and fads. When Central changes, it has always been motivated by an underlying passion of being relevant for the contemporary needs of church and culture. A seminary that is global, personal, and horizonal, Central, with God’s mercy, Christ’s model, and the Spirit’s guidance, will continue to change and innovate for a new generation of ministers.

Financial Coaching for Ministry FormationAngela Jackson (2014 MDiv and current DMin student), Director of Money & Ministry

Meet Scotti and Amber Simpson, a married couple completing their first year of seminary. They have taken full advantage of the Money & Ministry Program services by engaging financial coaching together. Scotti and Amber value financial freedom, openness to change, service to others, purposeful happiness, and family. They have passion and desire to be of real service to the world through both their vocation and their finances, but to be truly free for the life they envision, they recognize the need to be intentional. So, they have embraced a minimalist lifestyle, set out to reduce impulsive spending, and committed to better planning, with goals of saving for a state-to-state move and eventually discharging educational debt, so that they can respond to God’s call on their lives without hesitation.

Central launched the Money & Ministry Program in January 2017. Partially funded by a grant through the Lilly Endowment, this new program offers financial coaching to all students as a complimentary service. Beyond providing a coach at no cost to our seminarians, Central offers a monetary incentive to each student who follows through with a series of three financial coaching sessions within an academic term. During the first term of the program, approximately 25 students participated in an initial conversation, and 13 of those students completed a coaching series before the term’s end. Just two weeks into a second academic term, the Money & Ministry program is currently partnering with 15 students in financial coaching.

The coach works with students as follows: 1) To clarify personal values and cast a vision for one’s financial & vocational life. 2) To assess present strengths and weaknesses, as well as examine enduring habits for good and ill. 3) To set specific and attainable goals with concrete action steps and milestone markers toward achievement based on values/vision and strengths/weaknesses. Seminarians

recognize the necessity of being prepared for the financial realms of their ministries. Some are focused on personal preparation like debt reduction and household budgeting. Others are interested in learning to lead stewardship campaigns and preach faithful sermons about money. Still others are thinking about what it means to live simply, to spend justly, and to save wisely. All are excellent topics for reflecting with a financial coach.

Amber and Scotti are great examples of the Money & Ministry Program at work. Because of their willingness to reflect on financial matters, set goals, and take action, they will be better prepared to manage their personal finances and to lead the financial realms of their future ministries.

Central’s Money & Ministry program is personal, as well as horizonal. It is just one of the ways that Central prepares men and women for seeking God, shaping church, and serving humanity.
