Pasadena Heritage is proud to present our 2017 Calendar of events as we enter our 40th Anniversary year! With a variety of offerings every month, from small gatherings at the Madison House to major events like our Spring Home Tour and Craftsman Weekend, we draw on the past and explore the future of preservation in Pasadena. Four decades of preservation means dozens of structures saved from demolition; hundreds of buildings and sites successfully nominated for historic designations; collaboration with neighborhoods, other organizations, city commissions and staff; scores of presentations and tours, and, constant advocacy for the city’s historic architecture and character. This is a time when we reflect on past successes but also fully engage in the present and all the issues we face in the community today. We hope you will find much to enjoy and learn from and we look

forward to seeing you!

HOW TO Become A Landmark District

and Apply for the Mills Act Incentive

Saturday, February 25 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location will be announced at later date

In Pasadena, Landmark Districts are historic neighborhoods designated at the local (city) level and protected by zoning laws. Designated properties are typically eligible for grants or tax incentives for rehabilitation projects through programs like the Mills Act. How do you know if your property or neighborhood is eligible? What is the application process? These questions and more will be addressed by speakers from the City Planning Department and local citizens participating in each of the programs.

The event is free, but RSVP is required and a

$10 donation will be requested at the door.

HOW TO Research Property History

in Pasadena

Saturday, September 23 | 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Pasadena Heritage, 651 South Saint John Ave.

Workshop participants will receive hands-on, one-on-one instruction with local historians on how to conduct property research in Pasadena with visits to local archives. Learn about lesser-known online tools and search tips from the pros. Participants are encouraged to select a property of interest to use as an example. Visited archives include Pasadena Museum of History, Pasadena Central Library, and the Huntington Library’s Architectural Drawings collection. Meet at Pasadena Heritage office. There will be a break for lunch on your own.

Group size is very limited - register early!

A special grant program

was offered by Pasadena

Heritage through which

four historic homes in

the Lincoln Triangle

neighborhood were

improved with new roofs,

exterior repairs, and

painting. Pasadena

Heritage has consistently

championed historic

neighborhoods, from

advocating for down-zoning

in the 1980s, to helping

PRESERVATION TOPICS AT OUR OFFICE IN THE 1893 MADISON HOUSE

TALK+ TOUR: What Style Is It?Saturday, February 4 | 9:00 - 10:00am

Architectural styles and vocabulary such

as Queen Anne, Four Square, Regency

Revival, Ranch can be mind-boggling! This

month’s Parlor Talk will guide you through the

chronology of Pasadena’s architectural styles

and illustrate their most common features.

DIY ADVOCACY: How To Fight

Mansionization In Your NeighborhoodThursday, June 8 | 6:00 - 7:00pm

Like many other cities in the region,

Pasadena is experiencing a dramatic

increase in development, including in older

residential neighborhoods. When the price

and desirability of land exceeds the value of

an existing home, tear downs and massive

expansions become commonplace, which

can threaten the existing neighborhood

character. What can you do if you don’t

live in a historic district? Or face out-of-

place development in historic commercial

corridors? This talk will introduce participants

to tried-and-true grassroots activism, while

also explaining existing regulations, such as

compatibility development standards and

overlay zones.

Pasadena’s Preservation Award WinnersThursday, July 20 | 6:00 - 7:00pm

Every year the City’s of Pasadena’s Historic

Preservation Commission recognizes

successful preservation projects. This look

back at award-winning work acknowledged

by the annual Preservation Awards will

showcase a variety of projects from significant

rehabilitations to historic garden restorations

to creative re-use ideas. Attendee will also

learn how to nominate similar projects that

attest to the community’s passion for its

historic architecture.

Pasadena in the Movies

Ice Cream Social + Film ScreeningFriday, August 4 | 7:00 - 8:00pm

More than 100 years ago, Thomas Edison

hired James White to produce short films called “actualities,” including two pieces

about the Rose Parade. This was the

beginning of a long history of filming in Pasadena. Today, the city continues to be

a frequent location for both film and TV productions of all kinds. Join us for excerpts

of famous and not so famous film locations in Pasadena over the decades. Can you identify

them? Mysteries made all the merrier with

FREE ice cream! A family-friendly summer

event. Donations requested.

A ticketed bus tour follows the next day -

see page 10 for more details.

History of the 710 Freeway in PasadenaThursday, November 9 | 6:00 - 7:00pm

Recent proposals by Caltrans to construct

two six-mile long freeway tunnels was yet

another chapter in the 50-year story of

the 710 Freeway issue and its impact on

Pasadena’s oldest neighborhoods. Will the

tunnels be built? Who will decide? And what

about the sale of the 400+ properties, many

of which are historic homes with long-term

residents, owned by Caltrans along the

route? Pasadena Heritage has been involved

in this struggle for four decades. Join us for a

presentation and short discussion.

TALKS ARE FREE FOR MEMBERS BUT

SEATING IS LIMITED. PLEASE RSVP

LECTURE: SPRING HOME TOUR

Modern & MoreWeek of March 20th – exact date and time TBD

Location will be announced at a later date

Postwar architecture is finding new appreciation, and many buildings designed

after 1945 now qualify as landmarks.

Pasadena boasts many fine examples which, though lesser known, can teach us about

dramatic changes in architectural design and

taste. What were the influences that led to the creation of this new architecture? How

did new materials, engineering advances, and

public tastes contribute to the work of mid-

century architects? As these buildings need

restoration, what new skills and approaches

are needed? And how is mid-century design

affecting architecture today? These questions

and more will be explored, as a preamble to

our Modern Works spring home tour.

See page 8 for Tour details.

This presentation covers the historic district’s

long history. See images of the earliest

days of this commercial district, evidence

of its blighted state in the 1980s, learn how

Pasadena Heritage and others saved it from

the wrecking ball, and why many of Old

Pasadena’s buildings have split personalities.

VIDEO SCREENING:

Presence of the Past - A Woman’s Place Thursday, September 14 | time TBD

Mijares Mexican Restaurant, 145 Palmetto Dr.

Created by Pasadena Heritage and the City’s Cultural Heritage Commission, this video was the second of three programs on Pasadena history and people.

It highlights important early contributions to Pasadena by three strong, entrepreneurial women including Jesusita Mijares whose popular local restaurant continues to thrive. Join us for an evening of fascinating stories in a location rich with local history.

VIDEO SCREENING:

Presence of the Past - Dayton Street Thursday, October 12 | time TBD

Location will be announced at a later date

Dayton Street, west of Fair Oaks Avenue, was once a center of the African American community in Pasadena, centered around Friendship Baptist Church. Produced by Pasadena Heritage and the City’s Cultural Commission, this video tells the story of a thriving neighborhood. For more than a decade, from the mid-1980s until our move to the Madison House, Pasadena Heritage’s offices were located in the Church, and is part of our history, too. Come for popcorn, camaraderie, and the re-telling of this chapter of Pasadena history.

LECTURE: The Architecture of

Pasadena’s Historic Public Schools December | exact date and time TBD

Pasadena Central Library, 285 East Walnut St.

Pasadena’s remarkable collection of public school buildings date from the early 1900s and were designed by some of the most accomplished architects in the region. More than a decade ago, when the Pasadena Unified School District applied for state funds to repair and upgrade its schools, studies were completed of the multiple historic campuses. Drawing from these studies and additional research, this presentation will provide an overview of public school architecture and its value as part of our city’s architectural legacy.

Architectural styles and vocabulary such as Queen Anne, Four Square, Regency Revival, and Neoclassical can be mind-boggling! Join us on a guided walking tour of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, home to an impressive number of architect-designed homes in a wide range of styles. The tour follows a short presentation on the chronology of Pasadena’s architectural styles and features.

Saturday, July 1 | 9:00 - 11:00am

Saturday, December 30 | 9:00 - 11:00am

Old Pasadena has gone from drab and dingy to a shopping and dining destination. Without Pasadena Heritage, this National Register Historic District would have been destroyed! Now it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalizations in the country. Let one of our trained docents lead you through the historic neighborhood and reveal its many hidden and unusual architectural details, old alleyways, and

historic signs.

Pasadena’s original downtown was a bustling place in the late 1800s as this image shows. These Victorian-era

buildings with their elaborate detailing are the same buildings that exist in Old Pasadena today, but new facades

were constructed when the street was widened in 1929. Pasadena Heritage worked diligently to save the historic

downtown in the 1980s when the city’s agenda called for the total demolition of the district.

WALKING TOUR

South Marengo Historic DistrictSaturday, June 3 | 9:00 - 11:00am

South Marengo was once the address of Victorian mansions and modest hotels, praised by President Teddy Roosevelt as a beautiful example of city planning. Pasadena Heritage nominated the Historic District to the National Register in 1982, then purchased and rehabilitated its first hands-on Preservation Fund project here. We also helped form the special business overlay zone, which allows some commercial uses in the restored homes. This tour will explore the people and stories associated with this turn-

of-the-century Craftsman neighborhood.

Covering the area between California Boulevard and Columbia Street, this tour will stop at several little-known historic sites including Julia Child’s childhood home, a hidden Smith & Williams, and a historic fire station converted into a house.

Two tours are available this day: the Pasadena Hillcrest Neighborhood tour allows tour goers to discover an established neighborhood of Pasadena. One of Pasadena’s most beautiful neighborhoods, the tour explores various architectural styles such as Mediterranean, Victorian and the neighborhood’s ubiquitous Craftsman inspired homes. The South Orange Grove Boulevard Tour illustrates the neighborhood’s dramatic postwar transformation and shares stories of the stately residences that were there before. When the Rose Parade first began, South Orange Grove was a neighborhood of grand mansions, known as Millionaires’ Row. Today the Boulevard is distinctive for its concentration of luxury mid-century garden apartments designed by prominent Los Angeles-area architects.
