more practical sessions and outstanding Keynote

Speakers and presenters from all across the country.

This year we have some great changes to our program

and the ACHPER Village to help you get the most out of

bag. If you are attending more than one day, pick

Professor Dawn Penny Professor of Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy at Monash University

Dawn Penney is a professorial research fellow in the School of Education at Edith Cowan

University and an Adjunct Professor at Monash University. Dawn is known internationally

for her research in policy, curriculum and assessment in physical education. Much of

Dawn's work has sought to strengthen links between research, policy and curriculum

development, and professional learning activities, through collaborations with government

agencies, curriculum authorities and teachers. Issues of equity and inclusion in physical

education and sport remain key agendas in her research. She is a longstanding member

of ACHPER and a recent a national board member.

Dawn will be delivering a keynote presentation on Tuesday 28 November with Justen

O’Connor “Educative purposes, learning and participation pathways”, as well as a

presentation titled “Building Positive Relationships with External Providers”, and “Primary

Assessment for PE and Health” on Wednesday 29th.444

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Donna Cross Head, Health Promotion and Education Research; and Director, Early Childhood Development and Learning

Collaboration TELETHON KIDS INSTITUTE

Dr Donna Cross is a Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health

Sciences at the University of Western Australia and the Telethon Kids Institute. She is the

Head of Health Promotion and Education Research and Director of the Early Childhood

Development and Learning Collaboration. Donna has led over 50 applied longitudinal

school and community-based research intervention projects in Australia and the USA

investigating ways to enhance the social and emotional development (online and offline)

among children and adolescents. She currently leads 11, longitudinal research projects

investigating ways to enhance young people’s health and wellbeing, especially among

vulnerable school-age children.

Donna’s Keynote presentation on Tuesday 28 November “Not everything that counts can

be counted” will provide a summary analyses over 200 studies that show how social and

emotional development programs: reduce students’ internalizing symptoms and conduct

problems; and produce gain in academic achievement.

Dr Justen O’Connor Senior Lecturer, Monash University

Justen is a senior lecturer in HPE with interests in how various factors facilitate and constrain

young people’s engagement in movement. He draws upon systems thinking, social ecology

and strengths-based approaches to explore curriculum and pedagogy associated with health,

physical education, sport and lifetime physical activity. Justen also has an interest in social

justice within education as well as informal forms of participation in movement.

Recently, Justen has been working with teachers as they begin to interpret and apply various

aspects of the new Australian Curriculum: HPE. With a particular focus on creating an

inclusive HPE, he has helped develop support materials for the 5 key propositions

underpinning the curriculum and is currently exploring ways in which HPE can better

accommodate diverse learners.

Justen will be presenting the keynote presentation with Dawn on Tuesday 28th, and also

“The new AC: HPE – Opening up new opportunities for HPE” on Monday 27 November.

Wheel LIFE Disability Awareness Program for Schools

& Community Groups

Interactive, Fun, Educational and Inclusive

If you are looking for something challenging, fun and a unique way for your students to experience the world of Disability Sport, then why not have a go at wheelchair basketball?

Rebound WA offers schools and community groups a fun and interactive disability awareness program called Wheel LIFE. The program is designed to motivate and educate, whilst providing a practical understanding of what it is like to live with a physical disability.

Our Wheel LIFE program is very flexible and can be adapted to suit your requirements in terms of duration, content and venue.

What can be included?

▪ Athlete introduction

▪ Information on disability sport

▪ Instruction in use of chairs

▪ Warm up activities such as relay races

▪ Various drills and exercises with a ball in play

▪ Informal games and matches
