Much was achieved in Translation in 2017. Staff of the Department willingly invested their time, energy and commitment in their duties to meet targets set. Targets that were not met were entirely out of the control of the team.

6a. Formation of Language Committees

Seven Language Committees were inaugurated on Friday, 31st March, 2017. These were Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi, Mfantse, Ga, Ewe, Dangme and Dagbani Language Committees. Members of these Committees work closely together, read through the Bibles in their languages and advise BSG on possible corrections and modifications that might be necessary in future publications.

6b. Bono Translation Project.

Three persons, a lady and two gentlemen, were selected to constitute a Team to translate the Bible into the Bono language. Their appointment took effect on 1st October, 2017. The Chairman of Council, General Secretary, Translation Consultant and other staff from the Accra and Kumasi Offices were in attendance.

These texts were all subjected to meticulous checks by the Translation Consultant and the various Translator Teams to make them stand the test of time. By the close of 2017, these Revised texts were at various stages of typesetting, proofreading and printing.

6d. Diglots

Overall, 587,055 copies of the Bible were distributed in the year representing 86% of set target of 680,000 copies while we realized 97% of revenue targets set for the year.

Bible distribution trend over the last four years is represented in the table below:

Year 2014 2015 2016 2017

Bible Distribition(quantity)

468,847 492,831 558,807 587,055

8. CHURCH RELATIONS

In 2017, The Bible Society of Ghana worked hard to get even closer to the Church in Ghana. We wish to place on record that the Church in Ghana has been very supportive of Bible Work for many years. The Bible Society of Ghana does not take this support for granted. We took a number of steps in the year to strengthen the already close relationship with the Church:

8a. Celebration of Bible Week.

The 2017 Bible Week was observed from 4th to 12th February, 2017 on the theme: “Come, Let Us Reason

Beyond Bible Week celebrations, BSG visited various Church Leaders and Church Conferences to strengthen the engagement with our main sponsor/collaborator. We are very grateful to all Church leaders for their cooperation and encouragement in this work of the Lord.

In February, 2017, God opened a big opportunity to the BSG to strengthen relations with the Catholic Church. At the invitation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, a representative team from the BSG made up of Members of the BSG Council and Management visited the Catholic Bishops Conference. It was a pleasure interacting freely with all the Bishops of the Catholic Church in one meeting. Staff of the BSG have since paid follow-up visits to a number of Regional Bishops in Wa, Kumasi, Sefwi Wiaso, Ho and Sunyani.

Furthermore, the BSG paid courtesy calls on the Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Accra and the Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church both in May, 2017.

13. THE BIBLE VILLAGE PROJECT AT KITASE

Construction work on the first building at the Retreat Centre progressed steadily in 2017. By the close of 2017, the contractor was working on tiling the three floors of the building. We need to mobilize funds to complete at least the first phase of the project so that the project can be put to use. The first phase will include the residence of the Director for the Centre and the landscaping around the Administration block. Sadly enough, by the close of 2017 only 211 persons had contributed the minimum of GH¢100.00 Kitase levy towards the construction of the Retreat Centre. We once again appeal to all BSG members and the Church to support us to complete this phase of the

17. GRATITUDE

Madam President, Members of the Bible Society of Ghana, we can only thank God for a very successful year. In both our work and Mission, God accompanied us and almost all the objectives and targets set for 2017 were achieved. We thank the Church for her continued support to our work. Many Church leaders made time and space to interact with us in spite of their heavy schedules and their presence inspired us to work more for God. Our gratitude goes to the BSG Council and Committees for their support and encouragement to both Management and staff. The Council and Committees by their policies and suggestions, guide and challenge us to perform better and achieve greater results. We sincerely appreciate the prayer support of all BSG Members and their faithfulness in contributing to the Lord’s work in BSG over the years, especially in 2017. We shall continue to count on you in the years

to come. I want to personally acknowledge the hard work and cooperation of my colleague Managers and staff of the BSG. Without them not much would be achieved. The Lord bless them all.

18. CONCLUSION

2017 was a challenging but fruitful and rewarding year for the Bible Society of Ghana.

There was a renewed focus on both strengthening corporate governance as well as strengthening our processes throughout the Society. The BSG also pursued her mission in accordance with the set objectives and medium term strategic goals of the Society. As the BSG grows bigger and stronger, having a solid governance framework and very transparent processes would ensure her long term sustainability. The year 2017 has seen these solid bases of operation strengthened. The Management and staff of the Society are set to continue with improved performance. We can only look forward to higher heights in our ministry and we are both humbled and proud of our achievements. To God only be the glory.

We have audited the accompanying Financial Statements of Bible Society of Ghana set out on pages 27 to 37. These Financial Statements comprise the Statement of Financial Position as at 31st December, 2017 the Statement of Comprehensive Income, Statement of Changes in Reserves and Statement of Cash Flows for the year then ended, the notes to the Financial Statements including a summary of significant accounting policies and other disclosures.

OpinionIn our opinion, the Financial Statements give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Society as at 31st December, 2017 and the financial performance and Cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards for Small and Medium Sized Entities (IFRS for SME’s), and in the manner required by the Companies Act 1963 (Act 179).

Basis of OpinionWe conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (ISAs). Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the audit of the Financial Statements section of our report. We are independent of the Society in accordance with the requirements of the International Federation of Accountants Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (IFAC code) as adopted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) and have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with IFAC code. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Other InformationThe Council Members are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the

Report of the Council, which we obtained prior to the date of this auditor’s report. The other information does not include the Financial Statements and our auditor’s report thereon. Our opinion on the Financial Statements does not cover the other information and we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with our audit of the Financial Statements, our responsibility is to read the other information and in doing so consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the Financial Statements or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. Based on the work we have performed on other information that we obtained prior to the date of this auditor’s report, if we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact. We have nothing to report in the regard.

Council’s Responsibilities for the Financial StatementThe Council Members are responsible for the preparation of Financial Statements that give a true and fair view in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards for Small and Medium Sized Entities (IFRS for SME’s) in a manner required by the Companies Act 1963 (Act 179) as amended and for such internal control as the Council determine is necessary to enable the preparation of Financial Statements that are free from material misstatement whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the Financial Statement, the Council Members are responsible for assessing the Society’s ability to continue as a going concern disclosing as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting, unless the Council either intend to liquidate the Society or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so. The Council Members are responsible for overseeing the Society’s financial reporting process.

2017 Annual Report & Financial Statement24

Page 27: 2017 ANNUAL REPORTbiblesociety-ghana.org/.../10/BSG-Annual-Report-2017_web.pdfANNUAL REPORT 2017 & FINANCIAL STATEMENT EVANGEL ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH. Opposite Avenida Hotel, Kojo

Auditor’s Responsibility for the audit of the Financial Statements. Our audit objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the Financial Statements as a whole are free from material misstatements, whether due to fraud or error and to issue an auditor’s report that includes` our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but it is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (ISAs), will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these Financial Statements.

As part of an audit in accordance with ISAs, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also:

z Identify and assess the risk of material misstatement of the Financial Statements, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.

z Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectives of the Company’s internal control.

z Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the Council.

z Conclude on the appropriateness of the Council’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and

based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditors report to the related disclosures in the Financial Statements or, if such disclosure are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditors report. However future events or conditions may cause the company to cease to continue as a going concern.

z Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the Financial Statements, including the disclosures, and whether the Financial Statements represent the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the Council Members regarding among the matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings including any significant deficiencies in internal controls that we identify during our audit.

We also provide the Council with a statement that we have complied with relevant ethical requirement regarding independence and to communicate with them all relationship and other matters that may reasonably be thought to bear on our independence and where applicable related safe guard.

From the matters communicated with the Council Members, we determine those matters that were of most significance in the audit of the Society’s Financial Statements of the current period and are therefore the key audit matters. We describe these matters in our auditor’s report unless law or regulation precludes public disclosure about the matter or when in extremely rare circumstances, we determine that a matter should not be communicated in our report because the adverse consequences of doing so would reasonably be expected to outweigh the public interest benefits of such communication.

1. General Information

The Bible Society of Ghana was registered as a Corporate Body on 23rd September, 1967 under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act 1962, (ACT 106) and now registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee on 19th May 2015. The Society is domiciled in Ghana with its registered office and principal place of operation at Bannerman Road, James Town, John Atta Mills High Street, Accra.

The principal activities of the Society is to ensure the widest possible effective and meaningful distribution of the Holy Scriptures and helping people to interact with the Word of God.

2. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

a. Basis of Preparation

These Financial Statements have been prepared in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standard for Small and Medium–Sized Entities (IFRS for SME’s) issued by the International Accounting Standard Board and the requirements of the Company’s Act 1963 (Act 179).

The Financial Statements have been prepared on the historical cost basis except for the modification to a fair value basis for certain assets. The Financial Statements are presented in Ghana Cedi which is the Society’s functional currency.

b. Use of estimates and judgments

The preparation of Financial Statements in conformity with IFRS for SME’s requires management to make judgements, estimates and assumptions that affect the application of policies and reported amounts of assets and liabilities, income and expenses. The estimates

and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and various other factors that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances, the results of which form the basis of making judgements about the carrying values of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimates are revised if the revision affects only that period or in the period of the revision and future periods if the revision affects both current and future periods.

In particular, information about significant areas of estimation, uncertainty and critical judgements in applying accounting policies that have the most significant effects on amounts recognised in the Financial Statements are described in Note 3.

c. Going Concern

The Society’s Council has made an assessment of its ability to continue as a going concern and is satisfied that it has the resources to continue in business for the forseeable future. Furthermore, Council is not aware of any material uncertainties that may cast significant doubt upon the Society’s ability to continue as a going concern. Therefore, the Financial Statements continue to be prepared on the going concern basis.

d. Foreign Currency Translation

Functional Currency and Presentation Currency. The Financial Statements of the entity are presented in the currency of the primary economic environment in which the entity operates (its functional currency), for that purpose the Financial Statements are presented in Ghana Cedi.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTSFOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER, 2017

312017 Annual Report & Financial Statement

Page 34: 2017 ANNUAL REPORTbiblesociety-ghana.org/.../10/BSG-Annual-Report-2017_web.pdfANNUAL REPORT 2017 & FINANCIAL STATEMENT EVANGEL ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH. Opposite Avenida Hotel, Kojo

e. Transactions and Balances

In preparing the Financial Statements of the entity, transactions in currencies other than the functional currency of the entity are recognised at the rate of exchange prevailing at the date of the transactions. At the end of each reporting period, monetary items denominated in foreign currencies are retranslated at the rates prevailing at that date. Non-monetary items carried at fair value that are denominated in foreign currencies are retranslated at the rate prevailing at the date when the fair value was determined. Non-monetary items that are measured in terms of historical cost in a foreign currency are not retranslated.

Exchange differences are recognised in the Statement of Comprehensive Income in the period in which they arise and exchange differences on monetary items receivable from or payable to a foreign operation for which settlement is neither planned nor likely to occur (therefore forming part of the net investment in the foreign operation), are recognised initially in other comprehensive income and reclassified from equity to profit or loss on disposal or partial disposal of the net investment.

f. Property, Plant & Equipment

Items of Property, Plant and Equipment are measured at cost/revaluation less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses.

Depreciation is provided for on a straight line basis at rates calculated to write-off the gross value of each Property, Plant and Equipment over its estimated useful life. The annual rates generally in use are as follows:

Buildings Nil

Computers & Equipment 25%

Furniture & Fittings 10%

Motor Vehicles 25%

If there is an indication that there has been a significant change in depreciation rate, useful life or residual value of an asset, the depreciation of that asset is revised prospectively to reflect the new expectations.

g. Inventories

Inventories are stated at the lower of cost and selling price less costs to complete and sell (Net Realisable Value). Cost is calculated using the average cost method.

h. Revenue

Revenue represents the value of goods invoiced to third parties, net of returns and discounts and sales related tax collected on behalf of government authorities.

i. Impairment of Assets

At each reporting date, financial and non-financial assets not carried at fair value, are reviewed to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If there is an indication of possible impairment, the recoverable amount of any affected asset (or group of related assets) is estimated and compared with its carrying amount. If estimated recoverable amount is lower, the carrying amount is reduced to its estimated recoverable amount, and an impairment loss is recognised immediately in the Statement of Comprehensive Income.

Similarly, at each reporting date, inventories are assessed for impairment by comparing the carrying amount of each item of inventory with its selling prices less costs to complete and sell. If an item of inventory (or group of similar items) is impaired, its carrying amount is reduced to selling price less costs to complete and sell, and an impairment loss is recognised immediately in the Statement of Comprehensive Income.

If an impairment loss subsequently reverses, the carrying amount of the asset (or group of related

2017 Annual Report & Financial Statement32

Page 35: 2017 ANNUAL REPORTbiblesociety-ghana.org/.../10/BSG-Annual-Report-2017_web.pdfANNUAL REPORT 2017 & FINANCIAL STATEMENT EVANGEL ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH. Opposite Avenida Hotel, Kojo

assets) is increased to the revised estimated cost of its recoverable amount (selling price less costs to complete and sell, in the case of inventories), but not in excess of the amount that would have been determined had no impairment loss been recognised for the asset (group of related assets) in prior years. A reversal of an impairment loss is recognised immediately in Statement of Comprehensive Income.

j. Trade and other Receivables

Trade receivables are stated at amortised cost less impairment losses. Specific allowances for doubtful debts are made for receivables for which recovery is doubtful. Other receivables are stated at their cost less impairment losses.

k. Employee benefits

Short term employee benefits are recognised as an expense in the period in which they are incurred.

l. Long term employee benefit

Under a national deferred benefit pension scheme, the Society contributes 13% of employee’s basic salary to SSNIT for employee pension. The Society’s obligation is limited to the relevant contributions, which are settled on due dates. The pension liabilities and obligations, however, rest with SSNIT.

m. Termination Benefits

Termination benefits are recognised as an expense when the Society is demonstrably committed, without realistic possibility of withdrawal; to a formal plan to terminate before the normal retirement date. Termination benefit for voluntary redundancies are recognised if the Society has made an offer encouraging voluntary redundancy, it is probable that the offer will be accepted and the acceptance can be estimated reliably.

n. Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the entity has a present obligation (legal or constructive) as a result of a past event, it is probable that the entity will be required

to settle the obligation and a reliable estimate can be made of the amount of the obligation.

The amount recognised as a provision is the best estimate of the consideration required to settle the present obligation at the end of the reporting period, taking into account the risk and uncertainties surrounding the obligation.

o. Loans and Trade payables

Other financial liabilities, including borrowings, are initially measured at fair value, net of transaction costs.

p. Event after the end of the Reporting period

Event subsequent to the reporting date are disclosed only to the extent they relate directly to the Financial Statements and their effect is material.

3. Key Sources Of Estimation Uncertainties And Judgements

Useful life of Properties, Plant Equipment

The Council determines the estimated useful lives and related depreciation charges for its property, plant and equipment. The Council will increase the depreciation charges where useful lives are less than previously estimated lives.

Receivables

Critical judgements are made by the Council in determining the recoverable amount of impaired receivables. Credit risk is the risk that financial loss arises from the failure of a customer to meet its obligation under a contract. The Society has dedicated standards, policies and procedures to conduct and monitor all such risk. Although the Society is potentially exposed to credit loss in the event of non performance by counter party such credit risk is control through credit control policies where credit sales are only made to established dealers. Strict control is exercised through the monitoring of cash received from customers and provisions made

for specific doubtful debts where necessary. The amount that best represents the Society’s maximum exposure to credit risk at 31st December, 2017 and

31st December, 2016 is the carrying value of trade receivables and cash and cash equivalents in the Statement of Financial Position.
