ON THE COVER:

2017 was the 75th anniversary of The Seeing Eye’s Puppy Raising Program. The cover photo is a composite of scores of photos of puppies born in Fiscal Year 2017, and arranged into the number “75”.

For the first 13 years of our history, The Seeing Eye acquired dogs from Dorothy Harrison Eustis’s dog breeding and training facility, Fortunate Fields, in Vevey, Switzerland. But by the late 1930s, the school was graduating more than 100 students a year, and it was apparent The Seeing Eye would soon need its own breeding program closer to our headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey.

The Seeing Eye began its program with six German shepherds born in February 1942. Following a system that had been created at Fortunate Fields, the puppies were raised not in the kennel but by area families, where they would learn valuable lessons about going new places and meeting new people. The Seeing Eye initially found families through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 4-H youth program.

In 1949, there were a handful of families participating in the Puppy Raising Program, all in Morris County; today, there are more than 550 families spread across New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Northern Maryland, and Warwick, New York.

Letter from the President and CEO of The Seeing EyePhoto: This letter is accompanied by a photo of James A. Kutsch Jr., President & CEO of The Seeing Eye, and his Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Vegas.

Thank you for helping to make 2017 such a success. Your generous support helped 257 people achieve their dream of being matched with a Seeing Eye® dog. I’ve worked with Seeing Eye dogs since 1970 – the photo shows me with my current Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Vegas.

Thanks to your thoughtful gifts to The Seeing Eye, we haven’t had to raise our student tuition since our founding… a truly amazing achievement. The dollar certainly doesn’t go as far today as it did in 1929, when you could buy a dozen oranges for a quarter, an admission ticket to a New York Yankees game for a dollar, or a five-room colonial home in Morristown for $6,000… but it does at The Seeing Eye, where student tuition includes round-trip transportation from anywhere in the United States or Canada, three weeks’ room and board, training in how to use and care for a guide dog, equipment, ongoing support after graduation, and of course, the dog itself, can still be had for $150 for a first-time student, $50 for a returning student, or $1 for a military veteran.

You will find stories and photos of some of the people you helped achieve increased independence and dignity through the use of Seeing Eye dogs throughout this annual report. I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I do. Without you, we couldn’t have done it.

Highlights of Fiscal Year 2017 include:

We served 257 students, received 421 applications, and accepted 260 candidates into our program. (Some candidates accepted in 2017 will attend in 2018.)

We continued our follow-up support for our 1,771 actively working Seeing Eye teams, with Seeing Eye instructors conducting follow-up visits to Seeing Eye graduates in 45 states, Puerto Rico, and seven Canadian provinces.

At our Chester breeding facility, 473 puppies were whelped from 62 litters, with an average litter size of 7.6 puppies. The success rate for the dogs that began the training program after returning to campus from their puppy raising families and went on to graduate from the program or entered the breeding program was approximately 75 percent, allowing us to train only the very best dogs, and to find the very best match for each of our students. We had 566 active families participating in puppy development in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New York by providing foster homes for our puppies.

On January 29, 2017 – the 88th anniversary of our founding – The Seeing Eye was featured on CBS’s Sunday Morning. As part of the segment, host Jane Pauley sat with a Seeing Eye dog in training, a yellow Labrador retriever named Phoenix. The video can be viewed at https://www.cbsnews.com/news/almanac-seeing-eye-dogs.

Groundbreaking research on mothering styles in canines and the effect it has on their puppies’ development was done with The Seeing Eye’s breeding colony in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, and published in the February 2017 issue of Frontiers in Psychology.

2

Initial findings indicate that the breed of the mother dog, the size of her litter and whether she was a first time or a more experienced mom affected her mothering style and were factors that appear to contribute to the success of her pups as guide dogs. The Seeing Eye received national media coverage for our involvement in the study.

The Seeing Eye Orientation and Mobility Program held 14 seminars on the campuses of participating colleges and universities, including one at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Mobility specialists instruct people who are blind in how to travel safely using a long white cane. The goal of the Seeing Eye O&M Program is to give O&M students an understanding of guide dogs, so when they graduate and encounter an individual who would benefit from a guide dog, the specialist will recognize that the individual’s mobility would be enhanced by the use of a guide dog. Over 150 future O&M specialists attended the seminars.

Public visits to our campus continue to be very popular. The public is welcomed to make reservations and visit on Thursdays and one Saturday per month. The visit includes videos, talks by a graduate and an instructor, and a history of The Seeing Eye. In FY17, over 2,300 people attended 56 visits (an average of 44 individuals per visit).

On May 9, the second annual Dinner Party for The Seeing Eye was held, with 182 attendees enjoying the culinary skills of seven local chefs. Guests also enjoyed a video about one of our graduates, a graduate speaker and a live auction. Over $162,000 was raised for our mission.

On behalf of all the people you helped in 2017… thank you.

Sincerely,

James A. Kutsch, Jr.

Letter from the Officers of The Seeing EyePhotos: This letter is accompanied by photos of the Officers of The Seeing Eye: Thomas J. Duffy, Chairman; Ari Benacerraf, Vice Chair; Margaret E. Howard, Vice Chair; and James A. Kutsch Jr., President & CEO.

Dear friends:

In Fiscal Year 2017, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of our Puppy Raising program. It’s an extraordinary concept – taking 8-week-old puppies born at The Seeing Eye and distributing them to families or individuals throughout the area who volunteer to raise these dogs, teach them basic commands and house manners, bring them to different places and meet new people to socialize them, and most importantly give them the love, care, and attention that will develop the foundation of the uncanny bond they will share with the person they will eventually guide.

For more than a year, the puppy is a part of your life… and then the puppy, now generally 14 to 16 months old, comes back to The Seeing Eye to be trained as a Seeing Eye dog.

It really is a lot to ask of a volunteer. And we hear people say it all the time: “I’d love to do that, but I could never give the puppy up!”

Puppy raisers will tell you it’s not easy. But they know they are doing this for a higher purpose: To make a profound difference in the life of someone who is blind or visually impaired.

And those of you who have supported our mission in the last year with your gifts of money, dedication, and time have made it possible for our dogs to do what they truly love to do. If our puppies could thank each and every one of you, they would!

On their behalf… thank you!

Graduate StoriesInterspersed throughout this annual report are stories from people who graduated from The Seeing Eye in Fiscal Year 2017, plus one person who graduated several years ago but celebrated a significant life milestone in 2017. In addition to a photo of the team, each story also has a puppy photo of that same Seeing Eye dog when it was about 7 weeks old.

Ed Barnes and Voyager

Ed Barnes of St. John’s, Newfoundland, returned to The Seeing Eye in July to be matched with his third Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Voyager. The photo shows Ed smiling as he stands with his arm around Voyager.

“Voyager has a totally different personality from my previous dog, so it was a bit of an adjustment,” Ed said. “Once I got to know him, and learn his personality, and what worked best for him. I’m quite pleased with him.”

Ed says the aptly named Voyager is a great guide dog. “He has a lot of initiative,” Ed said. “The other day he was guiding me on the sidewalk and he stopped. I stuck my foot out and there was broken glass on the pavement. It wasn’t in his path, it was in mine. But he saw it and he alerted me to it.”

Christina Brino and Shasta

Christina Brino of Pompton Plains, New Jersey, is now working with her seventh Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Shasta. The picture shows Christina smiling as Shasta turns to lick her face.

“She is just the sweetest thing, she’s such a love,” Christina said.

“She has such a good work ethic. When she’s in harness, she is a pro,” she said. “Out of harness, she’s crazy! She loves to play. It’s amazing – it’s like a switch goes off in her head. She loves to fly around the house and play catch and go after her toys.”

Daniel Novielli and Lokai

Daniel Novielli logs a lot of air miles as the director of sales for SourceAmerica. “One year I was on 77 different planes,” he said. “I fly all over the country every month. Next month I’ll be in Indianapolis, then in Cleveland. It’s important that my dog be a good traveler.”

Daniel, who lives in Woodbridge, Virginia, said he found that dog when he was matched with Lokai, a golden retriever. The picture shows Daniel smiling as he holds Lokai.

“On the flights, he’s calm and well-behaved. When we’re walking, he’s outstanding. I love his posture. His head is up, his tail is up, and his feet are up – he walks up on his toes. He’s so smooth and graceful. This guy is absolutely excellent in every way.”

11

Jameyanne Fuller and Neutron

Jameyanne Fuller is a student at Harvard Law School and also takes classes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In August, she returned to The Seeing Eye to be matched with her second Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador/golden retriever cross named Neutron. The photo shows Jameyanne smiling as she hugs Neutron, who also appears to be smiling.

“In harness, Neutron is fast and focused, but he still has a wagging tail. He loves a challenge, but he's also very careful in complicated situations,” Jameyanne said. “Out of harness, he's all about getting cuddles and scratches. He likes to put his paw up on my knee and remind me that I've been studying for long enough now and I should start paying attention to him.”

Jessica Calvo-Varela and Jaime

Jessica Calvo-Varela of Wayne, New Jersey, is a high school Spanish teacher. Her dog’s name is Jaime – but it’s pronounced with a hard J.

“The students sometimes want to pronounce it ‘Jaime,’ but I tell them no – in Spanish, that’s a boy’s name!” she said.

The picture shows Jessica, with her eyes closed, smiling as Jaime, a yellow Labrador retriever, turns to lick her face.

“When we’re at school, she loves to walk up and down the aisle between the desks, like she’s a model on a catwalk,” Jessica said. “The kids love her, but they know when she’s in harness, she’s working and they can’t distract her. It’s a great lesson for them. The kids understand that she has a job to do, and they see that she does it well!”

John Stawasz and Isabel

John Stawasz of Rockwall, Texas, attended the wedding of his youngest daughter on May 28, 2017, with the help of his Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Isabel.

“My first daughter was married 11 years ago. At that time I had sight, I was able to function without any assistance and had full independence,” John said. “Since then my retinal degenerative disease, retinitis pigmentosa, had advanced to the point to where I had little to no sight. Although I could not physically see my youngest daughter's wedding, my vision could not have been clearer thanks to the assistance of my Seeing Eye dog. With Isabel’s help I was able to walk my daughter down the aisle and give her away. Isabel performed flawlessly, as expected. She has been a blessing not only to my life, but to others around me as they see and recognize the independence that Isabel has provided to me. I am so thankful and grateful for The Seeing Eye and that I made the decision to step out there and go through the training and come home with a new part of me. Without Isabel, this wedding would not have been the same. It was absolutely perfect.”

12

Lance Ayers and Pitney

Lance Ayers, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, returned to The Seeing Eye in July to be matched with his second Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador/golden retriever cross named Pitney.

Lance, who has been working for a blind and vision rehabilitation service for about two years, said he and Pitney make a great team.

“Pitney is always focused when he’s in harness,” Lance said. “He helps me get around my neighborhood and he helps me get around at my job. When he’s not in harness, he is a very playful dog!”

Nancy Trzcinski and Yale

Nancy Trzcinski of North Adams, Massachusetts, is the assistant program manager for an independent living center, where she says her Seeing Eye dog Yale unofficially “doubles as a therapy dog.”

“We have a lot of people who love to see him when they come into the office,” she said. “But when the harness is on, he’s all business!”

Yale, a golden retriever, is Nancy’s fourth Seeing Eye dog. The photo shows Nancy smiling with her head tilted into Yale’s head. He has his mouth open slightly so he also has a happy smile, and you can see his pink tongue!

Randy Banks and Ocean

Randy Banks of Bentonville, Arkansas, returned to The Seeing Eye at the start of the 2017 fiscal year to be matched with his fourth Seeing Eye dog, a golden retriever named Ocean.

“ ‘Oshi’ and I have become great trailwalkers,” said Randy, who is a retired school social worker. “There are a lot of great trails here in Northwest Arkansas and around Bentonville especially. Most all of the trails here go through wooded areas. Walking these trails is something that I love to do.”

Randy also is a charter member of the local Lions Club, a ham radio enthusiast, and volunteers to help people who have recently gone blind learn how to use adaptive technology.

“The Seeing Eye gets better every time I come back,” he said. “I couldn’t believe all the changes, but at the heart it has stayed the same – the spirit and the mission of The Seeing Eye. Those are the things that really matter, and that’s why The Seeing Eye is so successful.”

Tina Thomas and Gia

Tina Thomas of Los Angeles, California, returned to The Seeing Eye in May to be matched with her third Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Gia. In the photo, Tina is smiling as she hugs Gia.

“She is awesome,” Tina said. “When she is in harness, she is totally focused on her work. But when she is out of harness, she loves to play and to socialize.”

13

Tina has been doing judo for many years, and about five years ago took up jiu-jitsu. She said Gia had to get used to watching her practicing with others. “It was a little tough for her to watch me rolling around with other people, she’s so protective of me. But she figured it out. She’s such a good dog.”

Guide Dog at WorkIn 2017, The Seeing Eye created a social awareness campaign called “Guide Dog at Work. He’s Not Here to Play. Please Keep Yours Away.” The new campaign explains how pet dogs can cause harm if they are permitted to interfere with a guide dog’s work. The campaign calls for all pet owners to keep their dogs a safe distance away. A brief educational video and tip sheet for pet owners in both English and Spanish can be found at the new Guide Dog at Work website located at www.GuideDogAtWork.org.

The site also features tips on what to do when pet owners meet a guide dog team, and more details about guide dogs and their partners. The Guide Dog at Work campaign was created in response to The Seeing Eye’s nationwide dog attack and interference survey located at www.seeingeye.org/protect. Findings showed that nearly 85 percent of guide dog teams experienced serious interference from other dogs, and that almost 75 percent of those incidents involved a dog that was leashed but inadequately controlled.

JACK HUMPHREY SOCIETY ($1,000 - $4,999)The Seeing Eye’s first instructor and geneticist, Jack Humphrey trained Buddy, the first Seeing Eye dog, and Morris Frank, the first guide dog user. This Society honors him and all the Seeing Eye instructors who have followed in his footsteps.

This page has the AmazonSmile logo, which is the words “Amazon Smile: You Shop. Amazon Gives” over a line drawn to look like a smile. The caption reads: The Seeing Eye has been participating in a program with online retailer Amazon where people making online purchases can donate 0.5% of the purchase price to the non-profit organization of their choice... including The Seeing Eye!

To participate in this program, you log into Amazon by going to smile.amazon.com. It’s the same Amazon, with the same login, the same products, and the same prices, but Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase price, without any additional cost to the buyer.

It may not seem like 0.5% is a lot, but it adds up: Last year, Amazon donated nearly $4,500 to The Seeing Eye through this program!

Puppy Raiser OutingsThis page has photos of Seeing Eye puppies and their raisers at Newark Liberty International Airport. The first photo shows many Seeing Eye puppies and their raisers sitting on the floor in an airport terminal. The caption reads: Puppy raisers inside the terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport on April 1, 2017.

The second photo shows puppies of various ages lying on the floor of a shuttle bus with their puppy raisers. The caption reads: Puppies learn how to behave on public transportation as they take a shuttle bus between terminals.

The third photo shows a firefighter greeting a golden retriever puppy. The caption reads: A Seeing Eye puppy greets a Port Authority emergency responder in full gear. Note the helmet says ARFF – that’s not to greet the puppy! It stands for Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting.

Seeing Eye puppy raisers take their puppies on numerous outings to expose the dogs to new sights, sounds, and experiences. One such trip is the annual multi-club visit to Newark Liberty International Airport. About 150 puppies and their raisers parade through the airport, bringing smiles to travelers and employees alike. The trip culminates with boarding a plane so puppies become familiar with the experience.

Other puppy raiser outings include Liberty Science Center in Jersey City; pumpkin picking at local farms; bowling, miniature golf and mall outings; and a train trip to New York City.

Family DayThis page has three photos. The first shows a girl hugging a yellow Labrador retriever. The caption reads: A puppy raiser hugs a dog in training after a demonstration by associate instructor Lauren Wheeler. Photo by Jacqui Wyatt.

The second photo shows a group of young people holding up certificates. The caption reads: Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser scholarship winners.

Third photo shows a family looking at a board displaying patches from various law enforcement agencies. The caption reads: A puppy raiser family checks out the career change dog exhibit. Some dogs that leave our program go on to become working dogs for law enforcement agencies.

Veterinary Recognition AwardsThis page has two photos. The first is a close-up of a yellow Labrador retriever puppy looking down at a camera. In the background is a tree in autumn, its leaves a vivid orange. The puppy is so close to the camera all you can see is his big black nose, eyes, and ears.

The second photo shows five German shepherds sitting in a row. The German shepherd on the far left appears to be about two years old, the one on the far right appears to be about two months old, and in between are German shepherd puppies at various stages in between.

Each year, The Seeing Eye receives nominations from our graduates and puppy raisers for our Veterinary Recognition Awards. These veterinarians, and many others who remain unnamed, have gone “above and beyond” as they provided extraordinary service and care to Seeing Eye dogs in all stages of their lives. Our puppies, our dogs-in-training, and the Seeing Eye dogs working with their owners all benefit greatly from the generosity of these veterinarians and their staffs.

This year, The Seeing Eye recognizes William Bischoff, D.V.M., of Fayette Veterinary Clinic in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Bischoff and his staff were nominated by Seeing Eye graduate Kevin Minor, who has been working with Seeing Eye dogs since 1985. He is now with his fourth dog, a golden retriever named Jilly.

Back CoverA photo of a German shepherd, a golden retriever, and a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. The German shepherd and the cross are wearing green Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser Program vests; the golden retriever, who appears to be a few months old, is wearing a green Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser Program bandana.
