The Holy Trinity
Years ago I was visiting second students in the religious
education program.
I started by trying to learn what the children knew. I asked,
‘When we make the
sign of the cross, what do we say? ‘‘Father, Son and Holy
Spirit’ came the firm
reply. So far so good! Then I asked, ‘What do we call the
Father, Son and Holy
Spirit?’ Complete silence. I tried another track. ‘What do you
think of when you
make the Sign of the Cross?’ After a little bit of silence a
little boy gladly said,
‘The old man, the young guy and the bird!’ No one can blame the
kids for the
poverty of their images of the Trinity. Many older Catholics
have similar images
from paintings and holy cards.
The Mystery of the Trinity means that in whatever
way we portray God as Father, Son and Spirit it will
always be inadequate and incomplete. No one has
ever seen God or the Holy Spirit. No one has a portrait
of Jesus. All the images and words we use for the
Trinity are more a reflection of our faith.
God is always more than any name we use or idea we
have. The special insight into God we celebrate today
is the relationships that are at the very center of who
God is. It took the early Christians 400 years to fully
grasp what Jesus meant when He spoke of His
relationship to the Father and Spirit.
The early Church struggled to understand how and why God would
have three
faces and exist as One – love as One and act as One. They teach
us that the
persons of the Trinity are co-equal, co-substantial and
co-eternal. They taught us
that their experience of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit was an
encounter of love.
The heart of God is a loving relationship with us. Furthermore,
the early Christians
knew that they were invited into this relationship.
And this is true for all of us. Think about this for a minute:
we believe that God
creates, redeems and sustains the world. He invites us into a
loving relationship.
This gives us our greatest dignity and urges us to share this
message with
everyone we meet. What a privilege! What an invitation! What a
God!
Now, since relationships are at the core of God then, for those
of us who accept the
Trinity's embrace, relationships are to be our core. We are not
to be isolated
believers or private disciples. Every time we form new, healthy
and good
relationships, mend those which are broken, help other
relationships to be deeper
and richer or just enjoy the ones we have, we discover one
thing: we enjoy the life
of God, we are truly sharing in the life of God, we are truly
bringing salvation to
others by the power of the Son and Spirit.

LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD
Hace años estuve visitando algunos estudiantes en el programa de
educación religiosa. Comencé intentando conocer que sabían los
niños. Les pregunté: 'Cuando hacemos la señal de la cruz, ¿qué
decimos? "Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo" respondieron con firmeza.
¡Hasta aquí todo bien! Entonces pregunté: '¿Cómo llamamos al Padre,
al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo?' Silencio completo. Intenté de otra
forma. "¿Qué piensas cuando haces la señal de la Cruz?"
Después de un poco de silencio, un niño dijo alegremente: "¡El
viejo, el joven y el pájaro!" Nadie puede culpar a los niños por la
pobreza De sus imágenes de la Trinidad. Muchos
católicos mayores tienen imágenes similares de pinturas y
tarjetas sagradas.
El Misterio de la Trinidad significa que, de cualquier manera,
que representemos a Dios como Padre, Hijo y Espíritu,
será siempre inadecuado e incompleto.
Nadie ha visto nunca a Dios ni al Espíritu Santo. Nadie tiene un
retrato de Jesús.
Todas las imágenes y palabras que usamos para la Trinidad son
más un reflejo de nuestra fe.
Dios es siempre más que cualquier nombre que usemos o
idea que tengamos. La visión especial de Dios que celebramos
hoy, es la relación que está en el centro
de lo que es Dios. Los cristianos primitivos tardaron 400 años
en comprender plenamente lo que Jesús quiso decir cuando
habló de su relación con el Padre y el Espíritu.
La Iglesia primitiva luchó para entender cómo y por qué Dios
tendría tres caras y existe
como Uno - ama como Uno y actúa como Uno. Ellos nos enseñan que
las personas de la Trinidad son co-iguales, co-substanciales y
co-eternas. Ellos nos enseñaron que su
experiencia del Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo fue un encuentro de
amor. El corazón de Dios es una relación de amor con nosotros.
Además, los primeros cristianos sabían que estaban invitados a
esta relación.
Y esto es cierto para todos nosotros. Piense en esto por un
minuto: creemos que Dios crea, redime y sostiene al mundo. Él nos
invita a una relación amorosa. Esto nos da nuestra
mayor dignidad y nos urge a compartir este mensaje con todos los
que nos encontramos. ¡Qué privilegio! ¡Qué invitación! ¡Qué
Dios!
Ahora, puesto que las relaciones están en el núcleo de Dios,
entonces, para aquellos de nosotros que aceptamos el abrazo de la
Trinidad, las relaciones deben ser nuestro núcleo.
No debemos ser creyentes aislados o discípulos privados. Cada
vez que formamos relaciones nuevas, sanas y buenas, remendamos las
que están rotas, ayudamos a que otras relaciones
sean más profundas y más ricas o simplemente disfrutemos de las
que tenemos, descubrimos una cosa: disfrutamos de la vida de Dios,
estamos verdaderamente
compartiendo La vida de Dios, estamos trayendo verdaderamente la
salvación a otros por el poder del Hijo y el Espíritu.

St. Catharine Academy’s Higher Achievement Program (HAP) for 7th

65ª MISA ANUAL EN HONOR DE SAN JUAN BAUTISTA PARA CELEBRAR Y
AGRADECER A LOS ALUMNOS CLÉRIGOS DEL PROGRAMA DE HISPANO EN PUERTO
RICO
En unión con los fieles Puertorriqueños de la Arquidiócesis de
Nueva York, el Comité de San Juan Bautista honrará aproximadamente
25 sacerdotes graduados del primer Instituto Hispano establecido en
Puerto Rico por casi 65 años. La Misa de Acción de Gracias y Cena
se llevará a cabo el Viernes, 23 de Junio del 2017 a las 6:00 pm en
la Iglesia de Santa Cecilia (120 East 106th Street, New York, NY
10029).
La Misa conmemorará el deseo generoso de los graduados de seguir
los pasos de Juan Bautista, el patrón de Puerto Rico. Dirigido por
el Espíritu Santo, el Bautista fue primero al desierto y luego al
ministerio público llamando a todos al arrepentimiento y así
preparando el camino del Señor. Los sacerdotes honrados - y los
individuos que no pudieron unirse a nosotros – salieron a Puerto
Rico llenos de esperanza y volvieron a proclamar el Evangelio a los
migrantes Puertorriqueños en gran necesidad y crisis. Entre los
muchos frutos fue la creación del Apostolado Hispano para la
Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, la actual Oficina del Ministerio
Hispano, y los otros 17 comités arquidiocesanos Hispanos del
Caribe, así como, América Central y del Sur.
La cena se llevará en el Salón de la Iglesia de Santa Cecilia.

65th ANNUAL MASS IN HONOR OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST IN CELEBRATION
AND THANKSGIVING TO THE ALUMNAE OF THE HISPANIC PROGRAM IN PUERTO
RICO
In conjunction with the faithful Puerto Rican of the Archdiocese
of New York, the San Juan Bautista Committee will honor
approximately 25 priests graduated from the first Hispanic
Institute established in Puerto Rico for almost 65 years. The
Mass of Thanksgiving will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 6:00
pm at St. Cecilia Church (120 East 106th Street, NY)
The Mass will commemorate the generous desire of the graduates
to follow in the footsteps of Juan Bautista, the patron of Puerto
Rico. Led by the Holy Spirit, the Baptist went first to the desert
and then to the public ministry calling all to repentance and thus
preparing the way of the Lord. Honored priests - and individuals
who could not join us - left Puerto Rico full of hope and
proclaimed the Gospel to Puerto Rican migrants in great need and
crisis. Among the many fruits was the creation of the Hispanic
Apostolate for the Archdiocese of New York, the current
Office of Hispanic Ministry, and the other 17 Hispanic
Archdiocesan Committees of the Caribbean as well as Central and
South America.
Dinner will be held in the Hall of the Church of Santa Cecilia.
The donation per guest is $100. Please call Mr. Ray Quiñones at
