The National Forest Teaching School is an alliance of schools throughout the East and West Midlands. We are all passionate about Teaching and Learning and share a common aim which is to improve the educational opportunities and life chances for young people in our local area. Our Alliance is growing all the time, but currently includes 20 local primary schools, 10 secondary schools and 2 special schools. It spans the East and West Midlands, offers diverse experiences within rural and urban settings and includes faith schools.

John Taylor High School, based in the charming Staffordshire village of Barton under Needwood is the lead school. John Taylor enjoys a high reputation locally and nationally as a school with an enviable academic record based on inspirational teaching and exceptional pastoral care. The school was judged to be “Outstanding” by Ofsted in March 2014 and is a nationally accredited lead school for Initial Teacher Training.

John Taylor High School was accredited as a SCITT in 2014 but we continue to work in partnership with the University of Derby on our Primary Programme and selected secondary programmes. All of our Programmes follow the School Direct route and most are tuition fee routes. We are hoping to offer a few salaries places for English and Maths this year for those candidates with appropriate school experience.

As a teaching school we aspire, through our Initial Teacher Education programme, to train and recruit the very best teachers to our local area and regard School Direct as stage one of our teacher recruitment process. For trainees who secure employment within the alliance or beyond, we offer access to a programme of tailored professional development in their first two years as a qualified teacher. Our Newly Qualified Teacher and Recently Qualified Teacher Programmes build seamlessly on our ITE programmes. Talent management and succession planning are high on our agenda and our CPD and training opportunities reflect this, with opportunities for aspirant middle leaders and senior leaders to engage in tailored programmes to support career progression.

School Direct is an approach to initial teacher training (ITT) that gives schools more influence over the ways teachers are trained. The National Forest Teaching School works in partnership with an HEI Provider - for us that is the University of derby or the John Taylor SCITT. Our vision is that School Direct is part of our recruitment and we aspire to secure employment for as many of our trainees as possible in our partner schools and the local area.

How does School Direct differ from a core PGCE programme?• The lead school selects and recruits their own trainees • The lead school develops the content and focus of the training programme depending on local need, the

needs of the trainees and the needs of local schools. • School based practioners share the responsibility for delivering the professional studies programme.• Trainees are in school from the beginning of the Autumn term.• Trainees know from the outset the group of schools from which their placements will be selected.• Trainees have a home school that looks after them from day one. They start and finish the year in this school.

School Direct (tuition fee) placesThese places are open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. Trainees may be eligible for a training bursary or scholarship. For up to date information on bursaries and scholarships for 2017/18 visit the Get into Teaching website (www.getintoteaching.education.gov.uk)

School Direct (salaried) placesThese places are aimed mainly at graduates with 3 or more years’ work experience, ideally in a school setting. We may however accept applications from candidates with less work experience in shortage subjects such as Maths. Trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher in their school whilst training.

Both of the above routes carry the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with PGCE or PGC + 60 Masters Level credits.

School Direct in Partnership with the University of Derby

Primary ProgrammeWe offer a General 5 -11 Primary Programme although trainees may select a specialism for their training year. Specialisms include: Maths, MFL, Humanities, PE or Science. Trainees may also opt to follow a SEND pathway .

Trainees will be assigned a home school but also have a second placement school where they will spend 6 weeks after Christmas before returning to their home school to complete the year. Over the 2 placements trainees will gain experience of both Key Stage 1 and Key stage 2. Throughout the year trainees will spend 4 days a week in school with the fifth day being a training day. The University of Derby and the National Forest Teaching School share the delivery of training. The National forest Teaching School has worked collaboratively with our partner schools to design and deliver a truly outstanding and exciting school based training programme which really draws on the expertise of our alliance partners. On training days you will explore how children learn, classroom pedagogy and barriers to learning.

Periodically trainees will be required to attend university sessions, where they will develop their subject knowledge and practical experience acquired will be underpinned by more theoretical approaches. Support and guidance will also be given with assignments. University days will consist of lectures, small group seminars and workshops. The close relationship between School Direct schools and the university is a real strength of the programme and creates important learning and research opportunities for trainees.

There will be 6 assessment points, where trainees’ progress against the Teacher Standards will be assessed. In addition trainees will have to complete a number of Level 7 university assignments.

We are extremely proud of our employment rates and delighted that many of our trainees have secured employment within our alliance. This is the reason that we became involved in School Direct - to grow our own first class teachers!Visit our website to find out about our information evenings and taster days, or to register your attendance email Leah Axten at [email protected].

Secondary ProgrammeThe format of the Programme is the same as the primary programme – predominantly school based with the professional studies training shared between the National Forest Teaching School and the University of Derby. As with the Primary programme there will be 6 assessment points and a number of university assignments.

Over the two placements trainees will have experience of teaching Key Stage 3,4 and 5.

School Direct in Partnership with the John Taylor SCITT

Secondary ProgrammeOur SCITT Programmes follow the same format as our other School Direct Programmes but all Professional Studies training will take place at John Taylor High School.

Professional Studies ProgrammeOur Professional Studies Programme is designed to equip trainees with an understanding of how students learn and the barriers to learning that some students face on a daily basis. They will develop an understanding of a range of special educational needs in the classroom and how teachers can best meet those needs. The issue of assessment will be addressed on a number of different levels and towards the end of the year trainees will be supported with applying for jobs and preparing for interview. The programme is delivered by outstanding current practitioners from across our partnership. Themes explored in Professional Studies will be further developed within the context of your Subject Development Programme.

Our Subject Development Programme Throughout the year trainees will have sessions where they work in their own subject area with a subject development leader, looking at schemes of work and subject specific topics and how best these can be taught. This programme will be integrated with the professional studies programme and give trainees practical strategies and ideas for teaching as well as identifying the pitfalls and common misconceptions made by students. These sessions will take the form of small group tutorials (1:5) and so can be tailored very much to the requirements of the trainee.

Masters Level Study On completion of our SCITT programme trainees will be awarded QTS and be accredited with a Post Graduate Certificate with 60 Masters Level Credits. The Masters Level credits will form stage 1 of a Masters in Teaching and Learning Programme. The credits are fully portable and can be built on in subsequent years should trainees wish to study for and achieve a full Masters level qualification. Birmingham City University is the awarding body for the Masters component of the programme, but all teaching is delivered at John Taylor High School. Trainees will have full access to BCU resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

10 The National Forest Teaching School Initial Teacher Training Prospectus 2017/18

What is the starting salary for a teacher?Currently between £22,000 and £27,000. There is earning potential of up to £65,000 as a leading practitioner!

What is a SCITT?SCITT stands for (School Centred Initial Teacher Training. In July 2014, John Taylor High School was accredited as a centre for School Centred Initial Teacher Training, which means that we are the accrediting provider for SCITT trainees and can award QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) to those who complete their programme with us.

How do I apply? All applications are made through www.ucas.com. The applications window will open in October 2016.

How much school experience do I need to apply for School Direct? We ask for a minimum of ten days school experience in a relevant phase during the last two years. However, school experience can also form part of a conditional offer and we can help you to secure this through the School Experience Programme. Our lead school, John Taylor High School offers school experience through the DfE portal, access can be gained via the Get into Teaching website.

I haven’t passed my Skills Tests, will I still be offered a place if I am successful at interview?Yes, but this will be a conditional offer and you will need to pass the tests before July. Availability can be limited throughout the year so it is vital that all trainees enter for these as soon as possible. It is a national requirement for all trainees to have passed the Professional Skills Tests, together with their Maths, English and Science (primary) GCSEs to a grade C or above before the commencement of the programme. You must also have passed a degree with honours at a minimum of 2:2.

I am unsure whether my degree is appropriate for the subject I wish to teach. As a rule, your degree should be made up of at least 50% of the subject knowledge you wish to teach. Each person will have different circumstances, and A levels can be taken into account when looking at this. You may be required to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course. If in doubt, contact us at [email protected].

When will I find out which school I will be based in? Can I express a preference? When allocating main and second placements to trainees, we try to look at travelling distance from home. We try to work with people’s preferences but cannot offer any guarantees of specific schools. All of our partner schools only offer placements in good or outstanding departments, in order to give trainees the best experience of their QTS year. The second placement is usually offered in a school that offers a contrasting setting to the first. Due to the fact that we recruit throughout the year, we usually announce placements at an induction evening in June.

Am I guaranteed a job at the end of the programme?School Direct is a means of recruitment for schools; over 95% of trainees that have successfully completed our training programme have been successful at finding employment at the end of their training, many within our alliance. Candidates this year have shown success at interview for highly competitive NQT positions within schools. We are proud of our programme and believe that it prepares trainees for their NQT year effectively; our programme incorporates sessions on how best to prepare for school based interviews, and supports trainees throughout this process. We cannot predict at the beginning of the year which schools will have vacancies, like any other profession, there is no way to predict this one year in advance.

What are the progression opportunities following the QTS/ PGCE?Never before have teachers had more autonomy over their own careers and opportunities for progression. The school-led system is not only a means of recruitment for schools but also an opportunity to grow the leaders of tomorrow within schools. For those trainees that stay within our alliance schools, our programme will track trainees through their career, offering excellent CPD opportunities that are current and relevant through current practitioners. The programmes currently supported are the Embedding Good/ Outstanding Teaching Programme, NQT Programme, 2nd Year Teachers Programme, Emergent Leaders Programme, NPQML, opportunities for designation as an SLE, all the way through to senior leadership programmes.
