Jim Forbes has worked for more than 40 years as a successful executive with not-for-profit organizations. He concluded his professional career in June 2016 after creating a development program for the National Conflict Resolution Center. Prior to that, he enjoyed a successful tenure at San Diego Opera, directing a comprehensive individual gifts program.

Jim has provided leadership for the growth of some of this country’s most important cultural organizations, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City), The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA), and La Jolla Playhouse. Jim joined each of these organizations at a critical point in their development and advanced each financially, administratively, and programmatically.

At The Fine Arts Museums, for example, during a period of rapidly decreasing support from the City of San Francisco, he replaced that support with growing support from the philanthropic and corporate sectors. Concurrently, he built endowment, supported special projects, provided for facilities enhancement, and helped re-envision and develop what became a city-wide education program for children. At La Jolla Playhouse he revitalized a stalled capital campaign, exceeding the original $36 million goal by $8.5 million. The money raised created an endowment, funded the construction of the organization’s first permanent home, and sustained high artistic standards. Post-campaign, his efforts resulted in increased operating support by more than $500,000 annually.

With expertise in marketing and fund development, Jim has directed programs that have cumulatively raised more than $300 million. He has successfully directed five capital campaigns, created and developed annual operating programs, built membership, and increased community involvement. Throughout his career, Jim effectively partnered with boards by staffing governance committees, setting guidelines for accountability, writing organizational policies, even providing the guidance for changing the board composition to better meet organizational and community needs.

Jim has a life-long interest and strong personal belief in the relevance and importance of the arts to contemporary life. He believes that cultural organizations have a responsibility to serve their communities, and that Board members have a philanthropic responsibility. He has sustained a passionate love of opera, attending performances from early childhood at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. While living in San Francisco he attended 10 seasons of opera there. He and his wife, Juli Larsen, enjoy travelling to experience opera in this country and abroad, in such places as London, Paris, Venice, Milan, the Salzburg Festival, New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Jim earned a Ph.D. in music history with supporting areas in art and intellectual history (UNC-Chapel Hill), as well as an A.B. with honors in English literature (Lafayette College). Earlier in his career he was selected for leadership roles in national

7

professional organizations, including the American Association of Museums, the Western Museums Association, and the Art Museum Development Association.
