Capital Projects Construction began on the Weitz Center Music addition in May2016andthebuildingopenedSeptember2017. The Science project utilityrelocation,vacatingMuddHall,andhazardousmaterialabatementinMuddHallbegantoprepareforitsdemolitioninOctober. The Utility Master Plan project-phaseIbeganincludingtheeastenergystation, geothermalwellboredrilling,andthreebuildingheatingsystemconversions:Cassat,James,Myers,andFacultyClub. ProjectsCompleted2017-18 Project HighlightsPlansforanewmusicandperformancecommonsaddition to the Weitz Center for CreativityweredevelopedbyHGAarchitects.TheadditionwascreatedtohousethemajorityofthemusicprogramandcreateanewperformancespaceofhighacousticqualitytoreplacetheexistingConcertHall.Musicfacultyoffices,rehearsalspaces,themusicresourcelibrary,andteachingstudioswereincludedintheproject.WorkbeganinMay2016andtheadditionopenedforfallterminSeptember2017.ThenewmusicandperformanceadditiontoTheWeitzCenterfeatures:• A400-seatperformancehallwithalargestage,flexible

design,andenhancedtechnology.• Alargerehearsalhallof1,960squarefeetthatdoubles

asflexiblebackstagespacefortheperformancehall. Allrehearsalandpracticespacesintheadditionaresound-isolated,allowingforrehearsalsevenwhen performancesareoccurring.

• Amediumrecitalandrehearsalhallwith1,600squarefeetand75seats,andasmallerrehearsalhallof900squarefeetforuseasamasterclassroomorasan intimateperformancespaceforsmallensembles.

• Facultyofficesandstudiosunitingtheentiremusicfacul-ty,includingappliedmusicinstructors,inthesamespace.

• TheHamlineCreativeSpace,aprominentcollaborativewhitespaceconducivetomultimediainstallation.

• Adequateback-of-stagestoragewithagreenroomandspaceforinstrumentsandequipment.

• Twogatheringlounges• Thirteenindividualpracticeroomsof100squarefeet• Sixpracticeorteachingstudios,each500–600squarefeet• Eleventeachingstudios,200to220squarefeet

•18,221workorderswerereceived.CustodialServicesreceived197moreworkordersthantheprioryear,whileMaintenanceandGroundsexperiencedanincreaseof4%overlastyear.AsignificantnumberoftheseworkorderswereaddedPMsandordersforoutsidecontractors.

•2,724ofthe11,757workordersassignedin-housetoMaintenanceorGroundsstaffwereforpreventative maintenanceonbuildingequipment/systems. •NumberofPriority1/Emergencyworkordersreceivedcontinuestostaybelowtarget.TherewereonlytwoemergencycallsforCustodialServicesinFY18.

Facilities Customer Service SurveyCustomersurveysweresentouttoarandom selectionofworkorderrequestersthroughoutthe fiscalyear.407individualsresponded,ascompared to410respondentsduringFY17.Ofthosewho responded,97%statedthattheirrequestwas completedwithinanacceptableamountoftime fromthedateofrequestandonascaleof1-5 (1being“poor”and5being“exceeds”),respondentsstatedthattheiroverallaveragelevelofsatisfactionwiththecompletedtaskwas4.7.TheyalsoprovidedmanyfavorablecommentsregardingFacilitiesstaff.

•83%ofallregularworkorderswerecompletedontime(within8days),a2%decreasefromlastyear’srate.

Community ServiceCustodial Scholarship Fund

TheseventhannualFacilitiesstafftrainingwasdividedintotwohalf-dayeventsheldinAugustandDecember2017.OnAugust8thetrainingcoveredasbestosawareness,hazardcommunication,laddersafety,andafireextinquisherdemonstration.The December6trainingcoveredradiationsafety,blood-bornepathogens,ergonomicsandinjuryprevention,andpersonalprotectiveeuipment,followedbyaquiz.Custodialstaffweredismissedforthedayandgroundsandmaintenencestaffattendedspillpreven-tioncontrolandcountermeasures(SPCC)training.

TheCarletonCollegeCustodialScholarshipFundBakeSaleandCraftFairwasahugesuccess.December1,2017everyonereturnedtotheWeitzCentertoshopandpurchasebakedgoods.Therewerejustover70vendorspotsandlotsofhappyshoppers.Thankyoutoeveryonewhoparticipatedincludingvendors, shoppers,bakers,BonAppétit,facilitiesstaff,and custodialsalespeople.

WearehappytoannouncethattheCraftFair,whichconsistsoftablingfeespaidbyvendors,raised$2,125.

Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability Assistants (STAs)WesaidgoodbyetofiveSTAsthatgraduatedattheendofthisyearandsaidhellotoeightnewSTAs thatwerehiredfortheupcomingFY19year.InFY18, ourSTAscompletedprojectsliketheRealFood Calculator,hostedaRepairFairandFreeandForSaleFrenzy,conductedenergyauditsofStimsonHouse,andcreatedamanualforResidentialLifeoutreach.

Large Event Successes TheSustainabilityOfficehostedtwoneweventsoncampusthisyear:ThePointsofInterventionTour/RepairFairandtheFreeandForSaleFrenzy. ThePoints of Intervention TourwasinpartnershipwiththePost-LandfillActionNetwork,theCCCEOffice,ConvocationsCommittee,CustodialServices,BonAppetit,EnvironmentalAdvisoryCommittee,ZeroWasteTaskForce,&Dick’sSanitation(Carleton’swastehauler).Thetourstopconsistedofaconvoca-tionpanelpresentationentitled,“ChallengingtheLinearConsumptionEconomy”followedbyaRepair Fair wherevolunteerfixershelpedover80peoplerepairbikes,clothing,smallelectronics,andmusicalinstrumentsthatmayhaveotherwisebeendestinedforthelandfill.

STARS ReportingTheSustainabilityOfficereportsannuallytothe AssociationfortheAdvancementofSustainability inHigherEducation’sSTARSreportingsystem.Thisinformationisused bythirdpartyorganizationslike SierraClubtoestablishlistsof thenation’s“greenestschools.” Carletonwasawarded52.25 pointsoutofatotalof100, foraSilverrating.Thereare 155institutionsthathavesilverstatusoutofatotal327reportinginstitutions.ThetopthreeareasCarletonexcelsin (%oftotalpossiblepoints):

TheFree & For Sale Frenzy wasbuiltupontheexistingFree & For Sale Facebook pageoncam-pus.Studentscanpostwhentheywouldliketosellsomething,thenit’sfirstcomefirstservetoclaimit.TheSustainabilityAssistantsworkedtoconsolidatethisprocessintoaone-dayshoppingfrenzy!Over100studentsparticipatedwithover1,200articlesofclothing.

Waste Stream Annual Totals FY14 to FY18

Commencement Waste: Recyclableandcompostablematerialswereusedtoserve3,800boxedlunchesatCommencement.Sustainability,Custodial,andLightenUpStaffwere“trashtalkers”ateachweighstationtoassistwithdisposal.Thisyear,bottled waterwasnotprovidedandinstead,waterstationswithcompostablecupswereavailable.Anestimatedtotalof6,730 poundsofwastewasproduced,and97.03%ofthatwasdivertedfromthelandfillwhich isslightlyhigherthan97%in2017.

Reunion Waste: Wastesiteswerelocatedatalltentlocationsservingfoodusingcompostablematerialsandbeveragesservedinrecyclableorcompostablecontainers.Sustainabilityofficestafftrainedall reunionstaffonthewastestreams.Anestimatedtotalof11,164 poundsofwastewasproducedduringthethreedayeventand85.6%ofthatwasdivertedfromthelandfill,downfromlastyear’s90.1%.

Wind Turbine Production

Afteryearsofplanning,thecollegeisimplementing aUtilityMasterPlanforthenext100years.The newutilitysystemwillutilizefourformsofrenewableenergysystems:wind,solar,photovoltaic,solar thermal,andgeothermal.Thefirstphaseof constructionincludestheEastEnergyStationinthescienceadditionandgeothermalboredrilling. Ourtwowindturbines(installedin2004and2011)havebeenabighelptooursustainabilityefforts,butweneedtodomoretoreducecarbonemissions.

OurUtilityMasterPlanfurtherstheconcepts outlinedinour2011ClimateActionPlanwhichistheguidingdocumentsupportingourgoalofmakingCarleton’scampuscarbonfreebytheyear2050. Ournewutilitysystemwillutilizefourformsof renewableenergyandisflexibleenoughtotake advantageoffutureadvancementsinrenewableenergytechnologies. WhentheUtilityMasterPlaniscomplete,Carleton’splantemissionswillbereducedbyover35percent.
