Ruth Warick Senior Diversity Advisor UBC Access and Diversity

Ruth has been involved with UBC Recreation since she started working at UBC. By making physical activity a part of her routine, she has improved her overall health and increased her stamina for working, volunteering, and travelling.

“Working with a personal trainer has helped keep me on track. She has introduced me to new exercises I can do anywhere and has refined my technique so that I get the most benefit from them.”

Succeed at UBC this year by making time for movement. Moving allows us to deal with stress, build new friendships, and maintain our bodies to think clearly and critically.

GET MOVING

UBC WALKABOUTwalkabout.educ.ubc.caTeam up with 5 students, staff, faculty or alumni to count your steps over this 9-week program kicking-off on January 13. Join themed campus guided walks or walk on your own. Celebrating its 10th year getting people moving, UBC Walkabout is coordi-nated by the Faculty of Education and raises money every year for a different cause. This year’s focus is on breast cancer research.

JUST FOR FUNrecreation.ubc.ca/eventsMany of our intramural events, including Storm the Wall, have Just For Fun team options. These teams participate in a single, untimed heat against other non-competitive teams. You can also meet new people by signing up as an individual (“free agent”) and join others with similar interests.

UBC DEFEAT DEPRESSION RUN/WALKblogs.ubc.ca/ubcmhacWalk or run 5 km to help defeat depression on March 12. Hosted by the UBC Mental Health Awareness Club in partnership with UBC Recreation, this inspiring event raises money for local and national mental health intiatives.

INCLUSIVE RECREATION WORKSHOPSrecreation.ubc.ca/everyone-is-welcomeThese free educational workshops focus on how to create more inclusive programs and environments designed specifically for those working or volunteering in rec-reation and physical activity. The monthly workshops feature presenters who work on equity and social justice issues who will focus on applications in recreation. Space is limited.

To play verb

Engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

We often think, “I should get active.” At UBC Recreation, we want to move towards a community that inspires you to move because you love it, not because you have to. Do you remember when you last played for the fun of it?

Drop in on a dance class, take a guided walking tour, go for a swim, join a Just for Fun Intramurals team, learn to play cricket or curling, skate with your friends or bike to campus: get inspired to play again. At UBC Recreation, come take part without the requirement of having to compete or be an athlete.

THE UBC MOVEMENT CO.recreation.ubc.ca/movementThis group is about finding ways to get mov-ing that aren’t intimidating or overwhelming. From bouldering to skating to tennis to trail walking to Aquacises, the Movement Co. will help you find a way to make movement fun while meeting new people.

UBC’S LARGEST YOGAThis free event allows you to take part in a yoga class with an inspiring amount of partici-pants. You don’t have to be a yoga expert to love this fun class, so join us on February 3!

GET STARTED WITH FITNESSrecreation.ubc.ca/fitnessThe BirdCoop Fitness Centre offers FREE orientations with our qualified and trained staff in January. We will show you around the facility, how to use the equipment and help answer any questions to begin your fitness program.

As a prospective volunteer staff member, there are multiple areas to get involved with, but regardless of specific roles, staff have an opportunity to gain experience in game management, event planning, sport officiating, human resources, facility super-vision, public relations, alumni engagement, program delivery, and much more. The Intramural staff is made up of a diverse community of students from all faculties, commonly engaged in a dynamic pro-gram with unique leadership development opportunities focused on professional and personal development.

2016-17 Recruitment and Hiring begins in January 2016. For more information please visit recreation.ubc.ca/employment or contact [email protected].

WINTER INTRAMURAL CASUAL LEAGUESrecreation.ubc.ca/casual-leaguesCasual Leagues provide a balance between drop-in sports and competitive leagues. TIP: Sitting for lengthy periods of time is bad for you, even if you’re an otherwise active person. Shift your life at UBC towards more movement as part of your every day. Sit less to improve your wellbeing by finding small ways to incorporate some movement, such as hosting walking meetings, taking stretch breaks, or opting to climb the stairs.

SPORT CLUB APPLICATION PROCESSWhile current UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs will be recruiting athletes, UBC Athletics and Recreation will be seeking new clubs. In the fall of each year, sport clubs across campus can apply to become a UBC Thunderbird Sport Clubs for the following academic year. If you run a highly competitive team on campus and would like to take this next step, please email your inquires to [email protected].

COMPETING AS A SPORT CLUBAll UBC Thunderbird Sport Clubs represent the University of British Columbia.

Launched in September of 2015, the Athletics and Recreation department has generated a new competitive stream called the UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs (UBC TSC). This new program allows competitive clubs to compete in non-CIS/NAIA sports while representing the University. The goal of offering the competitive club stream is to provide more opportunities for the sport club teams at UBC to represent the University in competitions and to provide further student leadership opportunities.

INTRAMURALS

UBC Recreation offers Intramural programming and hosts exciting events throughout the year for people who want to participate in team sports and activities. Whether you want to play for fun or engage in competitive sport, there’s a league for you! Sign up as an individual or gather a team or drop in to test out the waters or come out to one of our events and meet new friends. If you’re a UBC student, staff or faculty member, we want you to come out and play!

The most traditional way to find a team is to talk to your friends, coworkers, classmates, or roommates to find people who are also interested in participating. Once you have a team, for certain events like Day of the Longboat and Storm the Wall, you can register as a Just For Fun team or a Competitive team:

COMPETITIVERepresent your faculty or other commu-nity and compete for points—teams at this level will participate in timing heats, with the top teams going head-to-head in final heats.

JUST FOR FUNSingle heats and non-timed events, this level is open to all skill levels and abilities.

You can also sign up to be a free agent for most of our events and leagues. For some of our most popular events, UBC Recreation hosts meetings to help individuals find a team.

Fall and Winter Intramural Leagues recreation.ubc.ca/leagues

Casual Intramural Leagues recreation.ubc.ca/casual-leagues

Casual Leagues are offered for Basketball, Soccer, and Ice Hockey, and provide a balance between drop-in sports and competitive leagues. They offer regular weekly games with officials but teams are fluid and adjustable—making this a great way to meet new people and play the sport you love without the commitment of a regular team.

BODIN BALL HOCKEY LEAGUE

UBC Recreation Intramurals is always looking for game officials for all

leagues. Training is provided and it’s a great way to make some money while staying on campus. Please stop by the

more information.
