Our Message for You:

Bishop’s Message: Dear brothers and sisters,

Though the world changes, circumstances change, and we change, our Savior never does. We are strengthened by sacred scripture proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

In this ever changing world it is imperative that we continue to build our permanent endowments that provide us with income every quarter. Together with the gifts received through the Annual Catholic Appeal, our endowed income ensures constancy to our ministries in bringing people to Christ.

For over two decades generous benefactors have helped grow our permanently endowed funds with the Foundation. Their collective legacy remains unchanged, as does my gratitude.

Thank you for taking time to read this Annual Report. May you find the stories of stewardship and generosity as inspiring as I have.

Foundation’s Message: Did you know that The Foundation for the Diocese of Helena, Inc. is your Foundation?

Our mission is to serve and strengthen the people, parishes, ministries and apostolic mission of the Diocese of Helena. We’re here to listen and help determine the type of gift that may be best for you.

The examples of stewardship highlighted in this report are extraordinary. Just as extraordinary, however, are the collective gifts from the faithful that make up each parish and ministry endowment. It’s through this widespread generosity that we were able to distribute over $1.1 million last year to support our Church.

We are pleased to provide you with this 2016 Annual Report, and welcome your thoughts, questions, and prayers.

In gratitude and service,

very Endowment has a story. It is difficult to tell the endowment story of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Hamilton in a “Reader’s Digest” version. May God help us do justice to this beautiful example of stewardship.

Stewardship of Kay HelppieMrs. Katherine (Kay) Helppie was a tiny woman with a heart twice as big as she was. Kay brought food to the sick, drove cancer patients to treatment, hosted bible study, and helped bring people back to the Church…just to name a few.

“She extended herself greatly,” shared Sr. Margaret Hogan, a Sister of Charity of

HONORING THE PAST, BUILDING THE FUTURE

Leavenworth who has served at the parish since 1983. Picture this: Kay walking from home to church for daily Mass, greeting people along the way. After a while, friendly conversations would turn to the reason for her daily voyage. “Kay’s witness and faith brought several back to the Church,” added Sr. Margaret.

Kay and her husband Garfield ran several stores in Yellowstone National Park before retiring and moving to Hamilton in 1982. Kay loved to ride horses, could handle a gun and hunt. “She could also drive a large RV, although often hidden behind the steering wheel,” chuckles Deacon Jim Kaney of St. Francis.

Kay served as honorary chair when the parish was building their pastoral life center, and also traveled to Guatemala to serve the diocesan mission.

Kay in Rome to celebrate the 100th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi Parish with her parish community in 1996.

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISHSt. Francis was a family to Kay, and her faith was her strength. This became even more so after the death of her husband, and then later the loss of their only child, Jim, to cancer.

Kay passed away shortly after her 90th birthday. Because of how she lived her life, it wasn’t a surprise that Kay left a bequest to her parish. What was a surprise, however, was the amount of the gift. Kay left nearly her entire estate to the parish, valued at over $4.2 million. Having lived a simple life, no one had any idea the Helppies had this kind of wealth.

Stewardship of St. Francis of Assisi ParishKay left it up to the parish to determine how best to use this significant gift. It quickly became clear to the parish leadership (Fr. Jim Connor, Sr. Margaret Hogan, Deacon Jim Kaney, and Finance Council Chair John Talia) of the need to pay it forward, and to

permanently endow a significant portion of the gift in Kay’s memory.

As the parish councils and leadership worked out the details, “the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable,” according to Fr. Jim Connor, pastor of St. Francis, “and continued to guide us throughout the process.”

This was confirmed by the enthusiastic support of the entire parish community after a presentation from leadership. Full transparency was an integral part of the process.

The St. Francis parish community agreed to permanently endow a significant portion of

the bequest to provide the parish perpetual support in Kay’s memory, and to tithe a portion for other parishes and ministries. When all was completed, the parish shared over 14% of the total bequest. The parish looked to Kay’s life for guidance when making tithing decisions.

The Legacy of Endowments at St. Francis of Assisi ParishPerhaps having experienced perpetual support through endowments helped the parish choose to permanently endow a significant portion of Kay’s bequest.

This experience came through two estate gifts over the last two decades from long-time parishioners Ruth and Len Ratkowski, and Julia and Joe Strnisha.

Both the Ratkowskis and Strnishas had directed a portion of their estate to St. Francis. Unlike Kay’s bequest which left it to the parish’s discretion, their gifts were directed to be long-term in nature. Distributions from the Ratkowski and Strnisha Endowments help with parish expenses and will continue in their memory…forever.

The Helppies now join the Ratkowskis and Strnishas in the legacy of supporting St. Francis of Assisi Parish—past, present, and future.

In closing, Sr. Margaret Hogan put it well in describing the stewardship of Kay’s gift: “The parish hit Catholic theology out of the ballpark, in my humble opinion.”

Agreed. Thank you, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, for allowing us to share this story of faith and stewardship, and for being an example for us all.

May the souls of Kay and Gar Helppie, Ruth and Len Ratkowski, Julia and Joe Strnisha, and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Every parish endowment fund received $1,000 through St. Francis’ tithing.* An additional $1,000 was available if matched. This “Parish Endowment Match Challenge” was the idea of

Deacon Jim Kaney, who also served on the Foundation Board at the time.

“It was a way to stretch Kay’s gift further and to help even the smallest parishes build a permanent endowment fund,” said Kaney.

The Libby-Troy Catholic Community raised $3,683 locally through the match challenge for their endowment fund. “We were so pleased at the response from our parishioners, and are all very grateful to the Hamilton parish for their generosity!” said Lauri Youso, bookkeeper at Libby-Troy Catholic Community.

“ These dollars are being set aside in an effort to be fiscally responsible as Kay had been during her life,

and to leave a permanent legacy in remembrance of her generosity.” — Rev. James A. Connor, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish

WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT? It’s a permanent fund that you can donate to through The Foundation for the Diocese of Helena, Inc. “Permanent” means your donation is not spent; it is pooled and invested for the purpose of generating earnings in support of the Church. And here is the important part: Those earnings will be given each and every year…forever. Such is the power of giving to an endowment.

WHY DO THE FAITHFUL GIVE TO AN ENDOWMENT? FOR SO MANY REASONS!

3 They love their faith and want to build a stronger parish, a stronger Church.

3 They want to ensure a healthy future for their parish and the diocesan Church.

3 They know that endowment earnings, sent to their parish or chosen min-istry, provide a steady stream of income that can be counted on.

3 They like the idea that their gift is helping not only today, but forever.

3 They like seeing their charitable dollars stretch further and make a bigger impact.

3 They like the increased tax savings they receive through the Endowment Tax Credit.

3 And, some like the opportunity an endowment offers to establish a legacy in a family or loved one’s name or memory.

6 the FOUNDATION for the DIOCESE of HELENA

Deacon Jim Kaney was ordained a permanent deacon for the Diocese of Helena in 2012 and served on the Foundation Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2015. Mr. John Talia is a certified public accountant and was elected to the Foundation Board in 2015. Both are members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Hamilton. We asked

them to share their insights.

What would you like Catholics in our Diocese to know about the Foundation?

Talia: The Foundation provides parishioners an opportunity to leave a legacy endowment gift that can benefit their parish or other diocesan ministries in perpetuity. Their gift is invested with the Foundation’s pooled investment funds which provides a prudent level of portfolio diversity, professional management, and the assurance that those investments are consistent with Catholic doctrine. The Foundation can also work confidentially and objectively with the donor’s professional advisors in their income, gift and estate tax planning. Kaney: I think it is important to understand that the Foundation exists for the benefit of both diocesan ministries and individual parishes. Of the $23.5 million in endowed assets, currently 34% is held for the benefit of individual parishes, 62% for diocesan ministries, and 4% for other charitable purposes. During my time on the board we saw the amount endowed for parishes increase by an astounding 830%.

Deacon Kaney, in thinking about your time on the Foundation board, is there anything in particular that stands out? Watching the amount of grants and endowment distributions to parishes and the diocese increase each year. In fact, last year the Foundation distributed over $1 million to parishes and ministries; in 2003 that amount was less than $200,000! During that time Foundation endowments grew from $6 million to $23.5 million.

Mr. Talia, being fairly new to the board, is there anything that surprised you about the Foundation? The diversity of experiences and dedication to our Catholic faith demonstrated by my fellow Trustees and Foundation administrative staff is truly impressive and has been an inspiration to me. It is an honor for me to serve as a Trustee.

Final Comments? Deacon Kaney and Mr. Talia agree that as the Foundation continues to grow in financial strength through the generous donations made by the faithful of our Diocese, it can aspire to do so much more in delivering on its mission…to serve and strengthen the people, parishes, ministries and apostolic mission of the Diocese of Helena.

WHAT IS THE MONTANA ENDOWMENT TAX CREDIT? It’s a special benefit for donors who make a qualified gift to an endowment, enabling them to consider a larger gift that leaves a lasting impact.

Individual donors making a planned gift to an endowment qualify for a 40% tax credit on the charitable portion. With the Foundation’s Charitable Gift Annuity program, we make accessing this valuable Montana tax credit simple. A deferred gift annuity of $2,500 could produce a tax credit of $900.

Business donors can make a direct gift into an endowment and qualify for a 20% tax credit.

The maximum tax credit is $10,000 per taxpayer per year. There are other limits and requirements, but the Foundation makes it simple…from making the donation to claiming the credit on your tax return. Just ask us for details.+ +

L egacies can take many forms, and this is particularly true in the case of Bob and Evelyn Dieringer.

Let’s start with family. In nearly 60 years of marriage, Bob and Evelyn raised 12 children…now expanded to 41 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Catholic faith was as essential to the Dieringer family life as work-ing and playing.

“They had priests join us for dinner often,” remembers daughter Rose Nistler, “and prayed that someday they would be blessed with a family priest.”

w“ When you entered Bob and

Evelyn’s home, you knew it was

a place of love and faith.”

Fr. Sean Raftis, a priest in the Diocese of Helena, was one of the grateful recipients of the Dieringers’ extensive stewardship. His early priestly training was at a seminary supported by Bob and Evelyn in Portland. He also enjoyed their hospitality. “When you entered Bob and Evelyn’s home, you knew it was a place of love and faith,” Fr. Raftis said. “They made me feel like family. I would say the Dieringers do have priests in their family…many!”

Bob was a successful entrepreneur from an early age, starting in the grocery business and moving into real estate. Evelyn did the extraordinary work of bringing up twelve children while teaching and modeling Gospel values. “She was a servant leader, and the wind beneath my father’s wings,” shared Rose.

Along with family and faith, they lived a life of hard work, thrift and generosity. When Bob and Evelyn passed away in 2007 and 2009 respectively, they had already set in motion a plan for how they wanted to share their wealth.

“They gave their entire estate away to charity, during and after their lifetime,” Rose shares proudly. Having lived in the Portland, Oregon area their entire life, the Dieringers under-standably directed the bulk of their estate locally, supporting Catholic education, pro-life efforts, and seminarian formation.

Bob Dieringer had a growing real estate busi-ness in Oregon, and had expanded to Helena on a project in partnership with his son-in-law, Steve Nistler. In what would be Bob’s last trip to Helena before his passing, Rose and

Steve invited then newly-appointed Bishop of Helena, George Leo Thomas, over for dinner to meet Bob and Evelyn.

“At that point Dad’s Parkinson’s was pro-gressed, but his mind and spirit were still strong,” Rose remembers. “At dinner, Bishop reached over and held Dad’s hand. It was so sweet, I can still see it like it happened yesterday.”

Bob fell in love with Bishop Thomas instantly, and later an idea occurred to Steve. What if his in-laws donated their share of the Helena real estate partnership to support the seminarians in the Diocese of Helena? After praying about this, Steve brought the idea forward to his father-in-law. “Bob didn’t think twice and said yes right away, believ-ing that the money earned here should stay here,” according to Steve.

That’s how the “Robert E. and Evelyn Dieringer Fund for the Education and Training of Major Seminarians” was established. Their share of the real estate partnership was donated, sold, and invested into a perma-nent endowment fund in Bob and Evelyn’s memory.

Every quarter Bishop Thomas receives a distri-bution check from the endowment in support of our seminarians. Bob is now holding Bishop Thomas’s hand just as Bishop had done over ten years ago.

For Steve and Rose, they enjoy watching their family grow to the next generation, with nine children and eight grandchildren (so far). With a generous spirit they have added to

the Dieringer Endowment, and most recently are doing so through the Foundation’s gift annuity program. “It honors Bob and Evelyn’s memory, supports our seminarians, and reduces our tax burden through the Montana Endowment Tax Credit,” explains Steve.

While there is not yet a family priest in the Dieringer family, Rose is sure her parents are still praying hard for this to happen. And

when it does, Rose explains that “our family would like to give our parents’ wedding rings to the new priest with hopes that they would be used in the making of his chalice.”

Honoring the past while looking to the future…their Catholic legacy continues.

This is the first upgrade to the parish center since it was built in the 1960s.

“Through Foundation endow-ments, we’re able to invest in the future of our parish,” said Fr. Bergeron. “Our building fund will still be working for us when the center needs its next remodel.”+

P lanned giving is a wonderful way to help support the many important needs of our Catholic community for generations to come. It also provides a statement about the importance the Church played in your life.

Here are some ways you can include your Catholic faith in your estate plan, regardless of size:

A BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST –

After providing for your family’s needs, consider giving your parish, the diocese, or an endow-ment fund a certain dollar amount, specific property, or a percentage of your estate. If you already have a will or trust, your attorney can add a simple amendment.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS – consider naming your parish, diocese, or an endowment fund as one of the beneficiaries of your retirement (IRA, 401(k), etc.), bank, credit union, or investment accounts. All you have to do is request a beneficiary form from the institu-tion holding the account.

“ Building our endowments is so similar to the work we do daily in the care of our parishioners. We are helping them see how they are a part of a larger community of faith, especially as they near death. When a donor passes away, our care of their gift should be just as we care for their family: personally, attentively, and prayerfully.”

— Fr. Joseph Carver, S.J., St. Francis Xavier Parish in Missoula
