The thought of attending a vin-tage show filled with curated and crafted goods always gets

my heart beating a bit faster than a trip to my neighborhood chain store. Husbands don’t always un-derstand our obsession, but I find it not unlike the love of big game hunting. While our menfolk are seeking the thrill of the kill, we happily attend our own safaris at local grange halls, fairgrounds and farmsteads, lugging home trophy finds to fill our homes with the rusty, chippy resurrections.

Many of our favorite local events are hosted on rural property, and those that are not, most like-ly got their start on someone’s farm. There is something whim-sical about shuffling through straw and brushing off cobwebs when hunting for lost treasures in an old barn. Many who own such buildings have refurbished the old relics and opened them to host vintages vendor sales. Other farmstead owners have employed newer barns on their property for the same purpose, creating a down home feel in a country atmosphere for local vin-tage enthusiasts to visit and dig. One of the most popular and largest of such shows in the In-land Northwest with 75 booths and thousands in attendance, is Pickin’ on the Prairie, hosted

each August by Ron and Brenda Buckingham of Past Blessings Farm. The couple bought their 1898 farmstead on Orchard Prai-rie Road, off of Bigelow Gulch in 2010. The farm had stood empty for over two years and was dilap-idated and overtaken by rodents. With a vision for the future, Ron and Brenda spent the first year on their new property making it inhabitable and planning. In August of 2011, they hosted their first antique show, “Pickin’ on the Prairie” on the property. It was an instant success. “People love the feel of coming to Past Blessings Farm . . from sweep-ing prairie views, to chickens cackling at your feet, we not only give you a fabulous array of an-tiques and artisan handcrafts, but we also give you a taste of country living at it’s best.,” says Brenda. People tell them it is a step back in time and have com-pared the show to feeling like a “country fair”, which is exactly what the Buckingham’s hoped for. Country and bluegrass mu-sic plays softly over the sound system and the old family dog, Tilley, goes from booth to booth visiting everyone. Pickin’ on the Prairie will be held August 20-21, 2016. she opened up one for a sale and found it to be quite successful. A self described Pinterest addict, Tam-my keeps her husband Adam busy crafting items for the yard and gar-den as well as her sewing room. Af-ter applying and being accepted to a few juried vintage sales this summer, Tammy was not ready to slow down past show season. In January 2016, she decided to open her garage in the Spokane Valley for regular sales fea-turing her repurposed craft business Farm Charms. The cozy arti-san space has a unique and funky ap-peal inspired by the Frenchman Art Market in New Orleans. Customers who follow Tammy at vintage shows now have a permanent location to browse her creations. Farm Charms is located at 10819 E Nixon Ave Spo-kane Valley, WA. Open 10-3 Friday and Saturday 10-12.

When Kamber Farnam was a little girl her favorite activity was pulling her little red wagon down to the lo-cal junkyard in Pocatello Idaho. She would spend hours digging though rusty metal and old bottles. Her love of junking and treasure hunting con-tinued into her adult life. “There is something fulfilling about taking something from the past and mak-ing it relevant today,” states Kam-ber. Before moving to Washington, Kamber owned a vintage shop in Cedar City, Utah. After moving to Chewelah, Kamber opened an Esty shop in 2011 and participated in lo-cal vintage shows as a vendor, but she realized she was missing the connection with regular customers visiting a storefront shop location. In November 2015 Kamber opened Black Sheep Vintage in a charming historic building that used to house an old candy store. Located just off of Highway 395 in Chewelah, Washington, the store’s flavor fea-tures everything from opulent Vic-torian to rusty junk, synthesized into one cohesive look. Black Sheep Vin-tage is located at 101 W Lincoln Ave Chewelah, WA. Open 10-5 Wednes-day-Saturday.

The Palouse Scenic Byway also known as State Route 27, winds through wheat fields and farmlands from Spokane Valley to Pullman, Washington. The Scenic highway is dotted with rustic red painted barns, grain silos, and old churches. Small towns filled with the charms of yes-teryear greet you every few miles. One of these quaint towns is Tekoa, Washington, home of Thomp-son Barn, the newest addition to the collection of tourist stops along

posing antiques and other items, he is finally in a position that will allow him to fulfill his dream. Linda is a treasure hunter at heart and enjoys hearing the stories that go along with each piece she finds. Clayton and Te-resa enjoy interacting with customers and using their business as a means to help others and give back to the community. University Mercantile is located at 1514 E Sprague Ave Spo-kane, WA. Open Mon-Sat 10-7, Sun 10-6.

Tucked into the Southern end of Spokane’s historic Hillyard District, is the newest addition to Spokane’s 2nd largest antique shopping dis-trict. Hillyard native Shawna Meyers opened Junk’n Chic in Sep-tember 2015 to fulfill her childhood dream of owning a retail shop. The prohibition era building that housed a law office for the past 3 decades, has been converted into an ador-able vintage shop filled rustic charm. Junk’n Chic is a can’t miss stop if you appreciate hand crafted home decor, hand painted, upcycled or antique furniture. The unique shop features treasures for every taste from fun, to classic, farmhouse, retro or shabby. Junk’n Chic is located at 4803 N Mar-ket Street Spokane WA. Open 10-4 Tuesday - Saturday.

Carla Klauder is famous for hosting neighborhood hoarders sales on Spo-kane’s north side. With twenty eight households participating and crowds of shoppers, Carla saw the demand was real for quality used and vintage goods. Last year Carla found an op-portunity to help a struggling busi-ness and homeowner, while finding a permanent home for her business. In December 2015, Carla opened Greenacres Vendor Mall in Greenacres, Washington in what was the neglected Sheles’s Bargain Barn. After undertaking the arduous job of removing over 4,000 square feet of unwanted merchandise, the vendor mall now houses booths with vintage collections, repur-posed wares, and handmade goods. Greenacres Vendor Mall is located at 17909 E Appleway, Greenacres WA. Open daily 10-6.

Nestled into a Spokane Valley neigh-borhood right off University and Valleyway, is a small garage trans-formed into a rustic and cozy cabin. Tammy Merrick has a passion for designing handcrafted pieces and repurposing vintage items to re-sell. She has always dreamed of having her own space after working shifts in several shops and local craft shows where she sold her creations. After moving into a home with 2 garages,

As you walk past the turn of the cen-tury storefront, your eye is automati-cally drawn to the large collection of vintage Pyrex peering out the win-dow, accompanied by a complete mid-century era dining table and set-ting. Era Vintage Home is truly a throwback paradise. Whether you were raised in the 50’s or the 70’s, your childhood will come alive with the trappings of yesterday. Owner Shanna Storey named the shop Era because the store contents include vintage from the 1940’s-1970’s eras with a nod to industrial and salvage looks. Shanna has a particular af-fection for mid-century pieces and vintage clothing. She opened the shop in August 2015, after her own mid-century collections and vintage wardrobe overflowed into several storage units. Each piece found in-side Era has been handpicked by the owner and looking for adoption in a new home. “Each item has a soul of its own looking for new life.” states Shanna. Era is located at 1802 E Sprague Ave, in Spokane, WA. Open 11-5 Tuesday– Saturday.

The circa 1906 concrete building standing next to Sonnenberg’s Meat Market & Deli on Sprague and Hel-ena, has a colorful history of serving the City of Spokane for more than a century. Formerly a furrier and oil analysis lab, this spring the build-ing, which has sat vacant for 3 years, will be reborn as University Mercantile. Larry and Linda Sackmann, both retired business own-ers, and Clayton and Teresa McDon-ald owners of C &T New Again Sales, have partnered on this new venture, located in the Easternmost part of the soon to be revitalized University District. The partners are passionate about vintage objects and have been collecting for many years. Larry’s life long dream has been to find the per-fect location to sell his restored and custom pieces. Larry states that with his large array of tools, equipment, and know how of restoring or repur-14

this popular route. Amy Thompson opened Thompson Barn Home Decor in April 2015 as another branch of her barn restoration and rental venue project, Thompson Barn LLC. “I love to decorate and provide decor for the events at my barn, and as I was get-ting set up with some wholesalers for decor and looking for a creative type of space for making and re-doing some wonderful junk finds as well as some storage space, the idea of the store evolved,” says Amy. A table in the far end of the store is used to meet with clients in planning upcom-ing events at her barn and for paint projects using the chalk type paint by Rebel Junk and vintage matte paint called MudPaint. In addition to the project paints, Thompson Barn offers a full selection of vintage styled hard-ware, drawer pulls, light fixtures, and Edison bulbs for your farmhouse decor. Amy continues to work part time as a Nurse Practitioner at a lo-cal hospital but truly enjoys being in town when her kids are in school, and having the flexibility of attend-ing their activities. The bus drops her children Piper, age 5 and Deck-er, age 7 off at the store after school, their faces lit up with excitement, as they tell their mom about their day. Thompson Barn has a unique pres-ence with small town charm and a wide variety of vintage themed de-cor and project supplies. Thompson Barn is located at 125 N Crosby Street Tekoa, WA. Open 9-4 Wednesday-Saturday.

Jeff and Amanda LaShaw have been growing, milling and selling animal feed for over seven years. As their clientele continued to grow, they de-cided to open a feed store in October 2015 on their farm located on State Route 27 in Rockford, Washington. Amanda wanted to offer her custom-ers coffee as well, and it was suggest-ed that they bring in some outside local vendors to sell their wares in the LaShaw’s Shop. It was then that Golden Gem Mercan-tile was born. “I love that our shop has a little bit of everything; from feed, vintage decor, locally made items, and coffee, as well as a full women’s clothing boutique,” States Amanda. The LaShaw’s believe in providing their customers with not only one of a kind locally hand made and hand picked vintage items, but also a very warm welcoming farm atmosphere that takes the shopper back to a simpler time of local coun-try mercantiles. Look for the big red country outpost building located at 18805 S SR 27 Rockford, WA. Open 7-6 Monday-Friday, 7-4 Saturday and 7-2 Sunday.

my son came home with a bulky, hid-eous 1970’s coffee table. He knows I love to repurpose furniture, and when he found out his friend was giving this item away, he was excited to get it for me. Did I mention this table was made of fiber board and laminate? Did I mention that it had apparently had water damage and the surface had “swollen” in some spots? The center door was full of the ugly overdone chunky details the 70’s were famous for. But I wanted to make this work for my son’s sake, to show him that when life gives you lemons, you can make lemonade. So I sat and looked at it. Daring my-self to re-imagine it as something completely different. When I look with my “after eyes” I first address the problems my “before eyes” see. In this case the rough finish from the water damage and the overdone door. Then I try to come up with a solution. Since this coffee table had three sections (a middle cabinet and

two shelves on either end) I decided to remove the cabinet door all togeth-er and instead use the three sections as “cubbies,” making wood bins to fit in each of the three sections. The other issue, the rough finish, I de-cided could be “hidden” by a faux distressed aged metal finish. So, layering a variety of paint finishes, I was able to give it the look of an aged galvanized piece and in the end, you could not tell that the surface was un-even. As a final step, I added “Live, Love, Laugh” stencils to the bins.No longer did this piece look like a 1970’s coffee table. It now had a modern, streamlined look and with the bins it had a lot of storage and could be used as either a coffee table or a bench. It sold very quickly at one of my monthly sales in our barn.

Recently, I needed to make a new TV stand for a large TV we had just pur-chased, as it would not fit in our old TV armoire. But, I wanted something unique, something affordable and something that would store all of our DVD’s and CD’s. When I found two old cabinets, that the owner told me had been used as pharmacist apothe-cary’s, I was smitten. Yes, they were white with green drawers. Yes, the handles hung sideways looked odd. But they had what I wanted . . . stor-age and affordability (I paid $30 each for the two cabinets.) So I stood and looked at them. The simple lines, the multiple drawers. This time my “af-ter eyes” worked quickly. Industrial. They saw industrial. First, I connect-ed the two cabinets together, mak-ing them read as a single unit. This gave me the width I needed for our TV. Then, using some scrap fencing, I made a top and also added a shelf for the DVD player. I removed the misfitting handles and then painted it with a “rusty iron” finish, using a paint technique I have taught my-self. I added new handles that have

a place for “labels” so I can categorize my DVD’s and CD’s. Then I stained the wood top a deep walnut stain and stood back and enjoyed the new piece my “after eyes” had known was al-ready there, just waiting to be found. Over the years I have redone count-less pieces using the “After Eyes” mentality. Seeing things for what they can be, not what they are. From furniture, to home decor, small things and large things, I try to see things at full, future potential. Not only does this save a lot of money, it also guarantees I will have a one of a kind piece. There is also a good feeling in knowing because I took the effort to rescue this piece, it will not be destined to become part of our already overcrowded landfills. As I think about the concept of put-ting on my “After Eyes”, I can’t help but think about how much better the world could be if we put them on, not just for “junking” but for all aspects of life. If we chose to see each other, not as how we are now, but as the people we can be, what a different place the world could be. If, rather than judg-ing someone for not being the person I think they should be, I could instead see them as a work in progress . . .and await with anticipation the per-son they will be. To see them with my “after eyes.” So grab your best junking buddy, your comfortable “shopping shoes” and most impor-tantly, don’t forget your “after eyes.” Brenda is owner of Past Blessings Farm, located in Spokane, WA. She has monthly sales in her barn and an annual antique show, “Pickin’ on the Prairie” always held the third weekend of August on their farm. She also offers paint classes, teach-ing her unique painting techniques and finishes. For more information, visit www.PastBlessingsFarm.com.

.

I’adore “junking.” I know many people prefer to call it “Antiqu-ing” but in all honesty, much of

what I haul home will never be wor-thy of an appearance on “Antique Roadshow” and some of it truly is just “junk.” But there is a method to my madness. I am not just some-one with poor taste or judgement. For me, junking is not just finding a piece that I love. It is not just about finding something that is beautiful or filled with character. It is also about seeing things as they could be, perhaps even as they should be. It is about seeing the world, especially the junk world, with my “after eyes.” When I see a piece; furniture, home decor, or whatever, I try to see it, not as it is now, in it’s “before” stage, but as it could be, in it’s “after” stage. I see it with my “after eyes”. In fact, it has become a fun challenge for me to try to see ugly things as something that could be attractive. Last year,

Right down the road from the Buckingham’s farm is Jim and Sheri Koch’s family farm that Jim’s parents purchased in the early 1970’s. For the past 30 years the couple has lived on the family farm and Sheri came to love the property and the 1890 farmhouse that they call home. In recent years, as vintage shows and shops grew in popularity, she started collect-ing and became addicted, often coming home with armloads of finds. “I wanted to keep them all, but realized that it wasn’t possible if I kept collecting,” says Sheri. With the encouragement of her husband and a couple of friends, Homestead Vintage Show began in September 2014 as a venue to share her finds with the commu-nity. Homestead Vintage Show is held September 16-17, 2016. For information on the show and upcoming sale dates, visit www.homesteadweddings.com.

Sandy Spears and Nancy Ma-roney love gathering vintage and have been hosting “FINDS” vin-tage craft and antique sales on Sandy’s rural property in Colbert, WA for the past 6 years. The two old friends convert a horse barn into vintage charm for a weekend twice a year. Each stall is trans-formed into a “theme room” dec-orated and accessorized with vin-tage finds to suit different tastes. You will find repurposed original furniture, barn wood decor, cus-

tom jewelry and original art with-in this modern barn built in old world gambrel style. FINDS sales are held on May 20-21, and Oc-tober 28-29, 2016 at 3017 E River Glen Road in Colbert, WA.

On suburban acreage just North of Coeur d’Alene, Linda Strang-er and Lynn Purcell host Vintage Pickin’s Barn Sale on Lynn’s five acre property In Hayden, Idaho. Fueled by their mutual love of vin-tage, handmade and repurposed wares, the two have been hosting the event since 2012. The Proper-ty features a quaint old barn built in the late 1940’s out of reclaimed wood from a building that was being torn down in the Hayden Lake Idaho area. The barn’s wide boards let in sunlight from holes in the wood where it had been nailed together for its previous structure. In the barn that originally housed horses, dairy cows, and chickens, twice a year the women fill it and the adjacent gardens with over 40 local vendors selling rescued discarded items and repurposing them into decorative, useful and productive pieces once again. Ev-ery inch of space is filled with res-urrected treasures just waiting to be enthusiastically scooped into the carts and wagons of attendees. Vintage Pickin’s Barn Sales are held May 21, 2016 and October 1-2, 2016 at the corner of Hayden Ave & Atlas Road in Hayden Idaho. For more information visit Facebook.com/VintagePickins.

Just East of Moses Lake, is the Pip-er Ranch, home of the Piper Barn Sale. The event is hosted on an authentic working ranch complete with the atmosphere you would expect from the real deal. The old red barn is cozy and rustic, filled with over 70 vendors of hand craft-ed and curated goods overflow-ing into grain silos. What makes Piper Barn unique from most vendor shows is that there are no vendor booths. The consignment event is set up like a boutique, an opportunity for shoppers to see everything merchandised togeth-er. Each vendor works a 4 hour shift and assists with everything from checkout to helping custom-ers. It really is a team effort. Ju-lie Piper Phipps and her husband Stephen moved to Moses Lake in 2012 to help run the family farm, and in 2013 Julie resurrected her mother’s Piper Barn Sale which was retired in 2002 after a 15 year run. After spending her youth helping out with the cafe at Piper Barn Sale, Julie felt the holidays were not quite complete without the event. Piper Barn Sale has become a holiday tradition, not only for the Piper family, but for the whole community. Piper Barn Sale is held November 2-5, 2016. Admission is $5 on Wednesday only, free Thursday-Saturday. For more information visit www.piperbarn.com.

Overlooking the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla Washington, is the Swenson Family Farm, home of Love of Junk, Walla Walla’s Vin-tage Market. The park like setting is an ideal location, and perfect for a road trip with or without a vintage camper. Juried local ven-dors, vintage trailer boutiques, picnic benches, musicians and food trucks pepper the expansive, well groomed and shaded lawns. A large modern steel building en-closes indoor vendors, filled to the brim with carefully curated repurposed, vintage and indus-trial finds. The pastoral setting features camping space for the “glampers” and plenty of park-ing. This Pinterest addict’s para-dise is packed with affordable finds such as the handmade and embroidered quilt picked up for $20 by bargain hunter Karen Fisher Alaniz of Walla Walla, Washington who exclaimed “This event is amazing! It’s huge with all price ranges”. Love of Junk is organized by Barbara Floyd, Founder of The Country Register chain of newspapers, on behalf of her daughter, Brenda and Doug Swenson and family. With over 70 talented and creative vintage vendors, this is one of the larg-est outdoor sales in the region. The 4th annual event will be held on June 17-18, 2016, at 253 Valley Chapel Road in Walla Walla, WA. For more information visit www.loveofjunk.com.
