Summer Camp

We know it can be hard to send her to camp for the fi rst time, but you can feel at ease that, while she’s having the time of her life discovering all the wonders of the great outdoors, trying new things, playing games, making friends, and so much more, she’s well taken care of, happy, and learning critical life skills every step of the way.

While she may not remember exactly how camp made her more responsible and independent or how it gave her an appreciation for nature, she’ll know it did. Whether facing her fears and plunging off the pier, leading the hike because she knows the way, or taking aim and scoring her fi rst bulls eye, she’ll leave camp with new skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

She’ll get this and way more at summer camp:

It’s a community unlike any other. Together with other girls, in an unfamiliar setting, she’ll fi nd the courage within herself to meet new people, make friends, and bond. As she makes choices and directs projects, she’ll learn to work well with others, become self-reliant and develop her leadership skills.

No cell phone or Facebook! She’ll unplug and enjoy being a girl in a safe, social setting and participatory environment without the distractions of modern day life.

Her confi dence will soar. For many girls, camp is their fi rst experience away from parents, away from home, and away from familiarity— providing unlimited potential to unlock and boost a girl’s confi dence.

She’ll get moving! Camp helps girls reduce stress, learn new skills, and engage in a more active lifestyle through hikes, boating, swimming, and play.

We can’t wait for your girl to join us at camp! We encourage you to take some time to check out all of our summer camp offerings and events in this book with her by your side. Then head over to gswise.org to learn even more.

Next step? Sign her up for her camp and count down the days until the fun begins!

Camp FAQs

When can I register my camper? Registration opens Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. See page 40 for more information.

Is my camper ready for camp?Yes, she is! Between the day and overnight camp options there is something for all girls in any comfort level. She’ll be with girls in the same grade so she can do activities geared towards her age with her new and old friends.

Take the quiz on page 27 to see if she is ready for overnight camp!

Am I ready for my camper to attend camp?Absolutely! You can relax and enjoy yourself knowing she is in a safe and fun environment having experiences that will last a lifetime. If she is at overnight camp you can still connect with her through letters.

What if my camper has special needs? We are dedicated to serving all girls at camp and work diligently to make sure your camper feels included no matter what the allergy, physical, cognitive, or behavioral issues. Contact the camp director for your camp for more information.

Detectives, Sleuths, Spies…Oh My!

Discover your camp adventure. Find the clues and solve the

mystery of why day camp is such a beloved summer tradition. Each

team of volunteers and teens is ready to ignite your curiosity and help you become a super sleuth!

It’s all about building your skills!

Whether it’s your very fi rst time at camp or you’re a seasoned pro, at a Day Camp by Community you’re on the path to becoming a Master of the Outdoors. Each year you attend, you’ll see your confi dence soar and your abilities climb to new heights with activities designed just for you. Here’s how it works:

Younger campers use animal slingshots to help perfect their aim. For fourth graders and up, the sky’s the limit as they target the bull’s-eye with bows and arrows.

Brownies concoct a one-pot meal like a yummy pizza casserole. Juniors step it up and get creative with their own individual foil packs cooked over an open fl ame.

Brownies become fashionistas as they create their own necklace or simple bracelet. Cadettes take it up a notch and whip up a six string keychain.

General InformationCampers entering grades 1–7: Fee includes the day camp t-shirt, patch, busing, and some meals/snacks.

Campers entering grades 8–graduating seniors: Do not pay the camper fee, but still receive the patch, busing, and some meals/snacks.

Peewees (ages 3–5) and boys (ages 6–12) : $15 per day, only on the days the adult volunteer is at camp. See gswise.org for more details. Look for the above icons throughout this section.

Keeping camp safe Each adult on site has completed and passed a background

check.

Each camp has a Health Supervisor all day and a fi rst aider for each overnight.

Swimming and boating activities have certifi ed and trained lifeguards.

Camps are licensed and inspected by state health inspectors.

Archery instructors are trained and certifi ed by national archery organizations.

Camp directors are volunteers from your community who organize your week of day camp all year. They’re trained in leadership development, emergency procedures, outdoor skills, and much more.

Volunteers needed!Support of adult family members = girls thrive!Volunteers are what make Day Camp by Community possible—and so special. For each day of camp, one adult is needed for every fi ve to eight girls. Adults from each family and/or troop are needed to volunteer one or more days.

We don’t need to tell you how quickly girls grow up! Spend a day or two or fi ve volunteering at camp to make memories that last a lifetime. Along with bonding with your girl, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of other girls in your community. When you watch their outdoor skills grow and confi dence blossom, you’ll know you’re making an impact. Plus, who wouldn’t rather trade a day at the offi ce for a day by the campfi re?

Adults work in pairs to keep track of eight to twelve girls as they go between activities.

Volunteers can include parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends!

A day camp volunteer team (of teens and adults) lead most of the camp activities for you.

Adults: sign up to helpStep 1: Register as a member of Girl Scouts of the USA (Any

adult volunteer working with girls, including males, must be a registered member.)

Step 2: Complete an online Application and Background Check at gswise.org. (Any adult volunteer working with girls must complete the background check every three years.)

Step 3: Register by completing a Camp Registration form for each adult volunteer (online or paper).

Be a hero to younger girls as a teen volunteer!Remember when you were a young camper and your teen leaders seemed so interesting and cool? Now you’re all grown up, and that cool leader can be you! It’s your turn to share your camp know-how and deliver wow-worthy experiences to your campers by encouraging them to get out of their comfort zones and try new things. It feels great to become a fun role model for younger Girl Scouts. Plus, you get to spend time with your awesome fellow teen leaders. No matter how old you are, there are no friends like camp friends!Bonus: You can clock in 35+ service hours in one

week!

Program Aide-in-Training (PAIT)Entering grade 7

You count down the days until camp each year, but you’re ready to take on a new role. Have fun as a camper but add a taste of being a Program Aide (PA). Shadow the PAs and try leading an activity or two for younger campers.

Program Aide (PA)Entering grades 8-9

Share your talents as you lead younger campers and adults in a spy-rifi c good time. Work with an adult mentor to fi ne tune the skills that make you great.

Counselor-in-Training (CIT)Entering grades 10-graduated senior

Master your skills by leading activities or a unit. Be the role model who is confi dent enough to dress up and sing silly songs, help shy girls discover their voice, all while making an impression that girls remember decades later.

Check gswise.org for PA and CIT training and required camp training dates.

There is no fee to be a PA or CIT. Some camps have a nominal training and materials fee.

General Information

Camp • 28 gswise.org • 800-565-4475

All girls welcomeAll girls entering grades 2–12 are welcome to attend overnight camp.

Flexible pricingOvernight camp program opportunities for girls are subsidized by Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. This means the cost of providing camp programs and operating camp is greater than the fee paid to participate. The fl exible pricing system offers families the opportunity to help cover the true cost of overnight camp if they are fi nancially able. For each session you will see three prices:

Level 1 adds, on average, an additional $50 per day to Level 3 pricing. This refl ects close to the actual cost of operating camp. Replacement supplies, maintenance of the buildings and grounds, and property staff support are included in this fee.

Level 2 adds, on average, an additional $25 per day to Level 3 pricings. This covers approximately 75% of the actual cost of camp and is designated for those who can pay more, but not the full fee.

Level 3 is the lowest cost of this program listed in the camp brochure and on the website. This covers approximately 52% of the actual cost of operating the camp program.

Select the fee that you feel is affordable and appropriate for your family. The fl exible pricing does not affect the quality of your child’s program, as all three fees are for exactly the same program. We ask that if you are able to pay the full cost of camp that you do. If choosing more than one week you may, for example, pay Level 1 for one week and another level the next week. If multiple children are attending camp you may pay the full fee for one child and another fee for another child. The goals of offering fl exible pricing options are to provide the highest quality programs possible to serve all community income levels and to preserve camp for generations to come.

Check-in and check-outCheck-in is from 2:30–4:00 p.m. Check-out is after the 30-minute family presentation that begins at 4:00 p.m. on closing day.

TransportationMost families drop their child off at camp. If necessary, transportation is available by van for a $35 fee. Indicate your desired stop on the Camp Registration Form.

Three stops are available:· GSWISE Marion Chester Read Service Center, Milwaukee

· Martin Luther King Library, Milwaukee

· Ives Grove Park and Ride, Racine

Summer events

For Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors

You know the feeling. That “aha” moment when something just clicked. The pride you felt when you took the plunge and left your comfort zone. With each Girl Scout event that you attend this summer, your time with us will be fi lled with moments like these.

Most girls have more than one passion. Whether it’s performing science experiments, creating art projects, cooking simple meals, or scaling a rock wall, with each experience you’ll be learning more about yourself and the world around you.

Look for our property map

on page 6 in the camp section on

Events • 3gswise.org • 800-565-4475

Register your girl for an event today! We invite girls to attend summer events for the grade

she is entering in the fall. Girls can attend an event individually if their troop is not

attending. All GSWISE sponsored events are fun, interactive,

educational, held to the highest safety standards, and developed to meet the needs of all girls.

Events are facilitated by staff, volunteers, and/or girls. All events (unless otherwise noted) close one week

before the event date if not fi lled earlier. If the event is full, you will be notifi ed within three business days from time of receipt of paper registration.

Confi rmations will be sent to your email address (if provided) or by mail one week before the event and will include appropriate dress, items to bring, and directions to the event.

If your girl cannot attend the event for which she paid, notify the council by the registration deadline (one week before the event) and the fee can be transferred to another event (one transfer only). If the event is canceled by the council full refunds will be issued.

How to registerRegistration will automatically open Saturday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. Online registrations (preferred method) are processed immediately while paper registrations take a few days to process. Online (preferred method)

o Go to gswise.org and search for Events. Paper

o Complete the Event Registration Form found on pages 15-16 and drop by any Resource Center or mail to: GSWISE, 131 S. 69th St., Milwaukee, WI 53214.

Program Activity Credits (PACs) earned through the Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity or Fall Nut Sale can reduce the cost for the girl who earned the PAC to attend camp or an event. If you register online you should email the 12 digit card #, girl name, event session, and the PAC amount to be applied to [email protected]. You will need to pay for the event in full. Once your registration is processed and we receive your PAC#, you will be reimbursed the amount of the PAC.

Will girls earn a recognition? All events are connected to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and many events help girls earn a Girl Scout recognition— a badge, patch, or Journey award. In the event description, Earned award means that girls will complete all fi ve steps needed to earn a badge and Related award means that girls will complete some steps needed to earn a badge.

Can families attend events? Some events are appropriate for the whole family to attend. They are found in the Family & Friends section on pp. 4-5. These are the only events at which we allow siblings to attend.

Program Aides (PA)Cadettes and older can assist at events leading activities as a PA. Have fun, strengthen your leadership skills, and meet new friends while working directly with younger girls. You pick the topics, dates, and number of volunteer opportunities that fi t your passion and schedule! Look for the PA icon.

There are no registration fees to assist as a PA at an event. To PA, register online at gswise.org and email [email protected] to notify the council of which events you are interested in helping.

Program Aide Core Training gives you a basis for working with younger Girl Scouts, but it is not required. To register for a PA training before summer visit gswise.org.

Financial assistanceFinancial assistance is available to help families register their girls for one summer event. For more information search gswise.org for the Event Financial Assistance Request Form.

Highest Awards

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue you care about. Whether you want to plant a community garden at your school and inspire others to eat healthily for your Bronze, advocate for animal rights for your Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for your Gold, you’ll inspire others (and yourself).

Also a given: as you earn one of Girl Scouting’s highest awards, you’ll change your corner of the world—and maybe even beyond. The possibilities are endless.

Want to see what others have done to earn their award? For inspiration, check out examples of Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award projects via Girl Scouts of the USA’s Map It: Girls Changing the World at girlscouts.org.

One is Silver…Grades 6-8Girls will learn how to make the world a better place! This is an interactive workshop designed to help girls learn about the Silver Award processes and procedures. Girls are highly encouraged to take this workshop prior to turning in their Silver Award Proposal to council. Have you ever looked around your neighborhood or school and wondered how you could make a change for the better? Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn—gives you the chance to do big things and make your community better in the process.
