To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth;

To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources;

To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment;

And to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

America’s largest and best-known grassroots environmental organization, Sierra Club, is also its most effective.

America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, Sierra Club, is also its most effective. The Club’s more than 2.1 million members and supporters have helped protect over 250 million acres of wildlands, nearly 13,000 miles of wild and scenic rivers, and many national treasures.

The Club’s core activities are public education, grassroots activism, litigation, and lobbying for environmental issues. In addition, it has a well-developed and influential presence in book and magazine publishing, as well as in adventure travel. More than 250,000 people participate in Sierra Club’s outings annually, including 12,000 young people who learn leadership and stewardship through youth adventure programs.

Sierra Club notecards and holiday cards present scenes of wildlife, landscapes, and details from the natural world. Those featuring animals include notes on the subject’s natural history. All cards are printed on recycled paper, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these cards supports Sierra Club’s efforts to preserve and protect the planet.

Knowledge Cards DecksKnowledge Cards Decks

SC0100Extreme Nature: The Highest, Deepest, Widest, Smallest, Heaviest, and Fastest Places and Living ThingsISBN 978-0-7649-2172-8Not one for mediocrity, Mother Nature occasionally creates something extraordinary. These Knowledge Cards cover forty-eight of nature’s superlatives in the areas of biology, geography, and climate. Which mammal bears the most young? Where will you find the world’s driest and wettest locations? Which insect is the most destructive? With informed, fascinating answers to questions such as these, Extreme Nature will delight the inquisitive of all ages.

SC0107Wilderness Survival SkillsISBN 978-0-7649-2178-0Everyone who ventures into the wild should have the knowledge necessary to prevent or treat the injuries and maladies that can arise there. This deck goes anywhere in a pocket and deals with most of the nasties that the outback can inflict. Each card asks a question on the front—How do you retrieve a lost companion? Treat frostbite, snakebite, heatstroke? What should you do when encountering a mountain lion?—and provides a knowledgeable answer on the back. The work of a lifelong outdoorsman and river guide, these authoritative cards are excellent company, at home or on a wilderness trip.

SC0103Animal and Bird TracksISBN 978-0-7649-2167-4We humans—the naming animal—enjoy ourselves more when we know what we’re observing in nature. Animal and Bird Tracks satisfies our hardwired urge to identify: a picture of a bird’s or an animal’s footprint appears on one side of each card; the other side names the creature and presents its taxonomic data, physical characteristics, and notes on its natural history. How do you tell a badger’s track from a porcupine’s, or a woodpecker’s from a flicker’s? Animal and Bird Tracks reveals the contrasts at a glance, enhancing the pleasure of being outdoors.

SC0115Air: An Environmental Quiz DeckISBN 0-7649-3009-5Air is good: it’s all that stands between us and outer space. These Q&A cards explore our atmosphere with wide-ranging inquiries and casually erudite answers. Where is the planet’s cleanest and dirtiest air found? Why do divers get the bends? Do volcanoes warm the atmosphere or cool it? What really made the Hindenburg explode? Is it possible to breathe a liquid? What are the cleanest and dirtiest vehicle engines? Can you name the atmosphere’s layers? How much air do we breathe in a day? With a question on the front and the answer on the back, other cards address global warming, the Kyoto Protocol, CFCs and the ozone layer, and cow digestion.

SC0105What’s the Difference Between a Dolphin and a Porpoise?Subtle Distinctions in NatureISBN 978-0-7649-2165-0Being able to distinguish a manatee from a dugong could tell you which continent you are on (if you’re in doubt). Knowing the difference between a porcupine and a hedgehog lowers your risk of grievous bodily puncture. This deck offers illumination on the characteristics that set one animal, plant, geological feature, or meteorological event apart from its seemingly similar neighbor. It’s a compact take-along that helps confirm the keen-eyed identifications of the peripatetic naturalist-at-large—and an entertaining reference tool for those who stay at home.

SC0121What in the World Am I?An Endangered Species Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-4150-4My tongue is as big as an elephant, but my food of choice is smaller than a paper clip—what in the world am I? As to my armored green neighbor, who spends her days eating nothing but algae and grasses, she ends up too often in an expensive soup—can you guess what she is? Even creatures as big as blue whales and giant sea turtles can disappear from Earth if human beings shirk their duty to protect the planet. Mollusks, mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and one spider are spotlighted on these forty-eight cards: their identities are hinted at on the front of the card, and their natural history and survival tale are told on the back.

SC0129Endangered Places: A Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-5387-3Our planet is forever changing. An age of ice is succeeded by drought—and then another ice age. Sporadic mass extinctions seem to threaten life itself. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the forces of change seem to have conspired: deserts are spreading, cities and farms are gobbling up open spaces, seas are rising. To cope with an increasing number of endangered places, local and international efforts have included evacuating low-lying islands, diverting water flows, and encouraging ecotourism. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards surveys the globe, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Amish farmlands of Pennsylvania, testing your knowledge and teaching you all about Earth’s threatened regions.

SC0130How Long on Earth? Life Spans of Animals, Humans, Insects, Plants, and Microorganisms: A Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-5456-6A stroke of bad karma might make you a cockroach, but the news wouldn’t be all bad: you’d only have to scuttle for sixteen months. Humans are among the longest-lived animals; cockroaches don’t live nearly so long as tarantulas or scorpions. If your karma went the other way, you might inhabit the body of a whale: the bowhead can live more than two hundred years, a generous span if you enjoy plankton. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards conveys far more than the life spans of the great and the small, shedding light on why some creatures live longer than others, how stem cells might be used to extend human life, and whether butterflies live longer in cages or meadows.
