Corvias Foundation has always understood that connections make all of the difference in how much we can accomplish. By working together with other non-profits or civic-minded organizations and companies, the Foundation can build on the capacity of our small staff to do even more. We maintain a network of scholars, alumni, professional organizations, technical experts, leading companies, and many more caring people for the sole purpose of using individual connections and knowledge to multiply each member’s ability to give back. This is based on the very simple principle that we are stronger together than we are alone.

We encourage students and partners to reach higher and look for innovative ways to inspire those around them to also do the same. Whether watching our new scholars being recognized for their excellence in academics on the field at Fenway Park as a result of our partnership with the Red Sox Foundation, or growing a partnership with outstanding organizations like the National Military Family Association (NMFA) so that professionals like nurses and teachers can gain registration and certification when they move to a new state—we are consistently grateful.

We strive to create ever-increasing opportunities by providing the resources and networks needed to help our scholars and partners surpass their goals. Our network creates opportunities to establish support systems, identify ways to help others, and break down barriers that prevent us from reaching higher. In 2016, Corvias Foundation alumni gathered in Colorado to continue to build on this belief and support each other as they develop personally and academically, professionally, and philanthropically. At every turn in Corvias’ history, we have encouraged those around us to put the needs of others first in order to find the best solution, and to understand that by helping another, we are creating a community of support. This Program of Work highlights several of our alumni so we can celebrate where they are now and all that our Foundation family and network can accomplish when we support each other.

The board and staff of the Foundation are proud and grateful to be a part of an organization that continues to thrive and provide meaningful ways to contribute to the communities in which we live and serve.

We thank you for your ongoing support of Corvias Foundation and invite you to continue to give back to your own communities. The more we do together, the more we do.

Gratefully,

JOHN G. PICERNEFounder

“ The highlight of my year was getting accepted to a Master’s program between UC Berkeley and UCSF, and starting my program in Translational Medicine. The program takes an interdisciplinary approach to medical innovation and focuses on bridging the gap between innovative research and actual clinical application. I’m really interested in medical device and drug development, so this program is perfect for me. I’m nearly halfway through the 10-month program at this point, which is awesome and scary at the same time. In the midst of my chaotic schedule I have the Corvias Foundation, which keeps me grounded. It links me to an incredibly diverse group of people, and I find that how I think and what I believe has been influenced by my relationships within the Foundation. On hard days, it’s not uncommon for me to think of my fellow scholars and find inspiration to keep moving forward. We’re all united in our efforts to give back and make the world a better place. The real treasure in this group, however, is the welcoming, open, and honest environment between us, which facilitates and fosters constructive discussion of our differing perspectives in a way that is invaluable and very special to me.”

“ I started college knowing that I want to contribute to science so that I can help people that need it the most. Thankfully, I was able to acquire a job early on that might help me do just that. The motivation that I had to apply to several jobs can undoubtedly be attributed to Corvias, who taught me to embrace every opportunity.”

GUSTAVO C.Emory UniversityPre-Medicine

“ I’ve participated in community service work, such as feeding the homeless and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. I joined Kappa Delta, an amazing organization that helped me befriend many motivated and diligent women. Corvias made college a reality, and it also allowed for me to make new and lasting relationships with a close-knit community. “

MEGHAN B.University of North Carolina at WilmingtonNursing

“ A highlight of 2016 was being on my college cross country team. For the first time in my running career, I had other women to run and train with. They motivated me like never before. Corvias allows me to continue my passion for competitive running without sacrificing the quality of my education.“

“ The Corvias network exists as a passive, background force in my life that urges me towards generosity and giving. I give as much as possible, a few dollars here or there, a hot meal when I can, whatever I can. I have had a fortunate life, I have many opportunities and I am compelled to share that joy with others.

There is no direct way to measure this impact that Corvias has on my life. It is like the density of the Corvias network has gravity that nudges my choices towards the Corvias values: imagine, empower, reach higher. Then, there is the point where the Corvias Foundation DOES spur direct, active choices. Three times this year, I worked directly under the Corvias name to volunteer or give back in other ways. This is more than a force in the background of my life influencing decisions, these are decisions made directly because of the Foundation, itself. These little acts have inertia that spread throughout my life. Not only is it a powerful antidepressant, it helps me take steps closer towards being the man I have always dreamed of growing up into: a successful and kind man, generous and thoughtful, understanding of his place in the world and in his community.”

“ Being connected to such a large network of kind, supportive people has been the greatest value and asset in being a Corvias Foundation scholar. Particularly in being a military child, I find comfort in always having someone to talk to about anything I may be struggling with.”

“ Because of my work as president of my school’s Slow Food Chapter, I was selected to attend Terra Madre, a biennial international Slow Food conference in Turin, Italy. “ The highlight of 2016 for me was receiving my first professional, full-time position. I received my Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida in May 2016 and headed to Florida State University in July. I currently serve as a Student Program Coordinator in FSU’s Student Government Association; I am the advisor to the Black Student Union and the Hispanic/Latino Student Union. My position allows me the opportunity to help develop and support college students in their leadership development. A big part of the job may be staying on top of the students to ensure events are planned successfully, but the growth that I am able to witness is the truly rewarding part.

The value that I see in being connected with Corvias is the connections and support that have been maintained throughout the years. It is awesome having the other Corvias scholars, and program coordinators, uplifting me and rooting me on. I have a community of people that understand the things I am going through and have vast experiences that can be used to learn from each other and network. We support each other through each of our journeys, even beyond undergrad.”

2016 MILITARY SPOUSE SCHOLARS

Each year, we award more than $100,000 in scholarships to military spouses pursuing continuing education or returning to school. Recipients of our $5,000 one-time award are completing continuing education coursework in nursing, business, and a variety of other community-focused career paths.

“ Follow your passion! So many people get caught up in choosing careers that will generate the most salary. Don’t be afraid of following your dreams. Start some research about what you love to do, and make it practical. Don’t hesitate to find a mentor that can help you succeed; he/she could provide significant guidance to help you achieve your goals. My mentor advised me that the key to success was taking initiative and being flexible. Take the initiative to steer your career; There WILL be obstacles, but be flexible with those changes and continue on your journey to success!”

“ I applied for the scholarship because I knew that if the financial burden of graduate school could be lightened, I would be able to focus all my attention and energy on my studies. When I first discovered that I was selected as a recipient, I felt proud and overjoyed. My husband and I have lived apart while I attend school (he is in North Carolina and I am attending graduate school in Illinois), and by being selected for the scholarship it makes it feel as though this separation is worth it in order to achieve our dreams.”

ALEXANDRIA S.

“ I am so thankful to have been chosen. Returning to school for my Master’s degree has been a goal for a long time, but the cost was a big obstacle to overcome. When I heard that Corvias Foundation provides scholarships to military spouses, I knew I had to apply. When I got the call that I was selected, it was just what I needed to confirm that returning to school was what I was supposed to do. I feel proud and that I am being a good role model to my two daughters—to be resilient and go after their goals regardless of obstacles.”

GIVING BACK

Community outreach is a cornerstone of the Foundation’s work—for our scholars, alumni, and Corvias employees. The hashtag #CorviasGivesBack was created as a place to share the good that happens each and every day, and to inspire others to consider how they can give back.

CORVIAS EMPLOYEESThroughout the year, Corvias employees volunteer their time with local nonprofits on their own and with their coworkers. As part of our #CorviasGivesBack program, volunteer teams develop project plans in collaboration with a nonprofit partner that prioritize active volunteer participation and result in lasting change. Since 2006, Corvias employees have invested over 28,000 volunteer hours in communities where they live and work, and this year was no exception. Of the more than 3,600 hours volunteered in 2016, one such example of commitment came from the employee volunteer team from Seymour Johnson AFB. Just weeks after many were personally affected by Hurricane Matthew, the group came together to finish a community project for a local homeless shelter and renovated existing duplexes for families experiencing homelessness in Goldsboro, NC.

$10 FOR TEN2016 brought the tenth anniversary of Corvias Foundation. Looking back on those who benefited from and contributed to the Foundation mission energized us to think about what the next decade has is store. To kick off the celebration, we created a tangible way to say thank you and to encourage grassroots giving: the $10 for Ten giving back challenge. Over 800 Corvias employees received $10 from the Foundation along with instruction that they could choose to keep $5 as a thank you, and to gift the other $5 in some philanthropic way. Employees embraced the idea and ran with it. Some pooled their funds and rallied together to give big, while other individuals changed the course of the day for the person next to them in line.

From surprising the community with summer popsicles in Alaska, chocolate bars and roller coaster rides to kids in need of a boost in Maryland, vegetable seeds to hunger programs in Florida, to a food bank donation in North Carolina—these are just some of the ways that Corvias employees across the county gave back.

19

DONATION MATCH PROGRAMJohn Picerne and Corvias exemplify the commitment to supporting the natural penchant of Corvias employees to give back through our Donation Match Program. Matching each dollar donated at a 2-1 ratio, Corvias Foundation ensures our employees can make a difference in support of organizations that matter to them. Since 2006, Corvias employees and Corvias Foundation have donated more than $1.6 million to nonprofit entities across the country and increased participation in the program in 2016.

SCHOLARS AND ALUMNIOur scholars and alumni are also active participants in #CorviasGivesBack and regularly share stories on social media and with each other. Throughout the year, they challenge each other, give ideas for outreach, and are constantly searching for new ways to do more. Inspired by the employee $10 for Ten stories, alumni committed to spending $10 from their own pockets to give back in their communities. 100% participated and chose to give back to their communities in a variety of ways—everything from donations to favorite charities, preparing snack and toiletry bags for the homeless, creating pet adoption baskets for shelters, and much more.

“ SOMETHING UNIQUE TO TEACH OTHERS”

“ As Corvias Scholars, each of us have been given the chance to pursue formal education—which is a life-changing opportunity! But I think a lot of the most important lessons we receive as Corvias Scholars—and simply as human beings—don’t come from a classroom. They come from conversations with an extraordinary group of Scholars doing incredible things around the country, mentorship from John Picerne and the Foundation staff, connections to networks, resources, and opportunities in all sorts of organizations around the US, and so much more. These informal connections and additions to our network can be just as valuable—or more—as the classes we get to take because of our scholarships.

But these networks only live up to that full potential if each of us acknowledges our own potential to contribute—in both formal and informal roles—and then actually follow through on that. Each of us has a lot to learn, but our experiences also give us something unique to teach others as well. In my classroom, most of the most powerful moments happened when I was willing to break down some of my barriers and be fully authentic and vulnerable with my students. The more that I shared with them, the more I was able to connect with them—and in many cases, to help them.

I think the same applies to the Corvias network. This endeavor will only be as strong or useful as we make it—and that means that we, as its members, have to figure out what we have to contribute.”

NATIONAL MILITARY FAMILY ASSOCIATIONNational Military Family Association (NMFA) is the voice of military families. Through the support and programs they provide, and their respected voice on Capitol Hill, at the Pentagon and Veterans Administration, NMFA always looks out for the families who stand behind the uniform and for those who serve.

NMFA and Corvias Foundation have partnered on the Military Spouse Scholarship program for three years. The targeted scholarship program makes it possible for spouses to secure licensing or registration in a new state or progress in a new state with an additional technical certification. In 2016, we expanded our program to support the educational needs of 27 military spouses with a $20,000 contribution.

HOME BASEHome Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, is dedicated to healing the invisible wounds for Post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research. We’ve been working together with Home Base since 2010, beginning with support of their annual Run to Home Base at Fenway Park. Home Base supports the Foundation through mentoring and internships for our medical and mental health students, as well as insight into public policy and marketing and media guidance.

PARTNERS AND DONORSCorvias Foundation is grateful to our partners and donors. Companies across the country, from Goldman Sachs to Blackbelly Restaurant, play a critical role in the growth and development of our scholars and alumni.

LEAD365 NATIONAL CONFERENCENancy Hunter Denney, founder of Lead365, has been a partner to Corvias Foundation since 2009 and provides direct mentoring to our students, empowering them in their studies and further helping to develop student leaders. Corvias Foundation is a proud participant of the Lead365 National Conference and once again, sponsored five scholars to attend the gathering with conference scholarships, which covered the cost of registration, airfare and hotel expenses. In addition to four Corvias Scholars, we were joined this year by Omer S., a student studying supply chain management at Howard University. Howard University is a new Corvias partner and we were honored to extend the invitation to one of their students.

CREATING CONNECTIONS

Corvias Foundation understands that connections are what help us to support our scholars to reach their goals. We maintain strong relationships with a variety of professional organizations who are committed to furthering the Foundation’s goals and priorities. These professional partners further our reach through additional programming, allow us to learn more through our support of their programming, serve as mentors to our new students and recent graduates, and also provide our students with needed advice and guidance along the professional career path.

“ At the conference, I practiced effective ways of communicating, sharing vision, and facilitating crucial conversations. I was able to meet many impressive students from other colleges, and learn from their experiences as leaders. An incredibly insightful, inspiring, energetic, and humbling experience! Something I completely recommend and am so glad I was able to attend.”

“ During 2016, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with Judge Thompson on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In addition, I have been involved in the Roger Williams University School of Law Business Start Up Clinic, where I advise clients on various entrepreneurial matters. I also work as an intern in the legal department of Liberty Utilities.

I graduate from law school this year and have begun searching for my first post-graduate career. One of the first questions that my career development office asked me was whether or not I had any connections “back home” to aid in my search. I panicked a little because I am an Army brat and don’t have a “back home.” Not to mention that I am the first person in my family to pursue a legal career. I was feeling overwhelmed by it all. I sent an email to Maria and my Foundation mentor, and their quick response and effort to assist me in networking made one thing clear to me: Corvias is my “back home.” That is value that I see in my connection to Corvias Foundation—it fulfills the role of a “home” which as an Army brat I would not otherwise have.”
