––– Jim Grine Dr. James Grine, professor emeritus of music, served the Department of Music as a flute professor for 37 years; his last four years at UW Oshkosh were spent as department chair.

Widely known as a fine teacher, Grine’s students are successful professionals in a variety of music fields—with performance degree majors winning national, regional and state awards. Several were chosen to participate in master classes of internationally famous flutists. In addition to his studio flute teaching, Grine served as associate conductor of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra, as principal guest conductor of the Victoria (Texas) Bach Festival and as conductor of the annual Oshkosh performances of Messiah. Professional performance experiences include: principal flute and soloist, Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra (1967-2005); principal flute and soloist, Victoria Bach Festival (1975-1995); principal flute and soloist, Green Lake Musical Festival under Sir David Wilcox; soloist with Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and numerous live broadcast recitals over Wisconsin Public Radio.

After retirement in 2003, Grine served as board president and as executive director of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. Service in the Oshkosh community includes membership on the boards of the Paine Art Center and Gardens and Oshkosh Rotary. Grine also worked with the Downtown Business Improvement District and the Oshkosh Landmark Commission.

Grine recently received the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce Lynn Webster Leadership Award. Last year, with his wife Geraldine, he was honored with the Marvin Rabin (State) Arts Achievement Award.

The Grines have been strong supporters of Musica Viva! since its inception.

About the Master of Ceremonies––– Welcome from Dean Koker Good evening and welcome to the 6th annual Musica Viva! I have attended many extraordinary and moving student performances on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus. In addition to being entertained, the performances give me a time to reflect and imagine. I am glad you are able to join me for this evening of music as you assist in providing the best education possible for our students. It is our goal that students become well-rounded individuals who are able to critically examine the human condition as a result of the study of cultures, science and art. Our extremely talented faculty and staff in the Department of Music prepare students to work through complicated and uncertain situations. Our music program is part of a comprehensive education that empowers individuals with broad knowledge and transferable skills, and a strong sense of values, ethics and civic engagement. It is one that is characterized by challenging encounters with important issues and leads to successful and remunerative careers in a wide array of professions with a strong likelihood of achieving long-term professional success both inside and outside the music profession. Enjoy Musica Viva! and know that your generosity will be rewarded with the knowledge that you are supporting our citizens and musicians of tomorrow. John Koker, Dean College of Letters and Science

Welcome

About the Guest Musician––– Ed Karrels Ed Karrels graduated from UW Oshkosh in 1997 with a degree in computer science. Though he wasn’t a music major, Karrels took trombone lessons and played in a number of ensembles. After working in Silicon Valley for a few years, Karrels is now back in the Midwest working on a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Illinois. Karrels continues to study the trombone and play in one of UWO’s orchestras.

To encourage a lifelong love of music, Karrels annually sponsors multiple scholarships for non-music majors who participate in ensembles and lessons within the UW Oshkosh Department of Music.
