Out the Study Window In many ways I could say life as apastor in five different churches, allover the United States, in the courseof 30 years, has been one long adventure of living through discovery. I have learned manyskills and discovered how deep and broad Christian compassion can lead and guide a church family.

But the greatest journey of discovery I have been a part of, is theone we are on together at First Presbyterian Church of Davenport.

The first five years of ministry we shared together were hard. Ourstaff has had many bright stars. However, we also had a few whowere confused about why they were doing tasks that were necessary.Over time we all grew mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.Today we all enjoy a gifted, energetic, skilled, and dedicated groupof staff members who are committed to the church and its mission.

What is even more exciting is to experience the many members ofour church who gather here in small groups to pray and learn, tostudy scripture and other relevant topics, to grow in their faith andawareness that God is present in the world through Jesus Christ.

One of the most fascinating discoveries I have made here as your pastor comes from comments I overhear about where I amtheologically. There are some who are convinced that I am themost conservative pastor this church has ever called. Having readpast sermons of previous pastors dating back many years, I doubtthe conservative title very much.

What is even more fascinating is that there are others who believe I am one of the most progressive pastors the church has evercalled. This second title is even easier to trace due to the lettersand requests for transfer, mostly because of my openness to theLGBT community and leaders in our church.

as your pastor I do not despair about any who need to throwaround titles, and descriptions, and labels. Jesus had to endure thisnonsense and it cost him his life. I find comfort in knowing that Iam perhaps following Jesus in that narrow way in a culture wherelosing one’s life over what or how you believe is minimal. Whatour culture does need are more Christians who champion and livein openness, and inclusive affirming ways, but who art not afraid totalk about Jesus and be led by him daily.

So, instead of throwing around labels and titles and descriptions, let’s continue to live a life of discovery together. I know it is farmore mysterious and less controllable, but it is more life giving. My door is always open. Call me and we can have a chat. There isno doubt in my mind that we will discover something together.

Your friend and Pastor,

Guest Speaker is Minner Serovy from the national Presbyterian Foundation

A light lunch will be served

Throughout the Church’s history, in both good and difficult times, faithful members have financially supported the Church’s work. This has enabled the Church to share God’s lovefor more than 175 years. But long-term stability continues to be an issue. Each year duringthe annual Stewardship Campaign, the Church starts from zero to raise the necessary resources to sustain its work for the coming year and each year there are many unknowns which impact annual giving.

The goal of the Foundation is to provide for future needs which cannot be met through the annual campaign. The Foundation provides opportunitiesfor members to extend their giving, perhaps for use beyond their own lifetimes. It gives today’s faithful Christians an opportunity to leave a heartfelt legacy for subsequent generations of believers.

NOTE: All members are welcome to attend. please RSVP by Monday, March 21 to the church office (563-326-1691;[email protected]).

Building & Grounds Committee The Buildings and Grounds Committee has had questions about the status of projects that have been suggested by church membersor identified by the committee. We hope this information will give some clarity on some of our current projects and our procedures.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee was approached in 2014 regarding a possible Fellowship Hall kitchen remodel. We walkedthrough the kitchen with a food service consultant in June 2014. His comment was that the current configuration (layout/functionalflow) is good. a proper update would include replacing all of the appliances, cabinets and room finishes. The consultant gave somecost estimates that add up to $125,000. This number was reported to Session and the reaction was to hold the thought and bring upthe subject at an envisioning meeting. We realize that it would be great to have a new updated kitchen, but the dollar figure has putthe prospect on the shelf for now.

We have also been in conversations for a few years regarding the vacation and realignment of the west alley and parking lot; andrestriping all parking lots. This project cost estimate adds up to $125,000 and like the kitchen remodel, the dollar figure has put themajor project on the shelf for now. The committee is considering restriping the lots in the Spring/Summer of 2016.

There is a process the committee goes through to get projects funded, started and finished:Step 1: The project is suggested. The suggestion can come from a member, staff, a code official, or the Building & Grounds

Committee itself.Step 2: Solicit bids or estimates. If the cost is large enough, two or three bids are required. Step 3: Establish a funding source (sometimes there is money designated in the yearly operating budget; sometimes a

restricted fund must be tapped; or some have such a large price tag that a capital campaign is necessary).Step 4: Submit costs to the Finance Committee for approval.Step 5: Present the costs to Session for final approval. Step 6: Schedule the project to be implemented and monitor the work being done.

Some projects need to happen quickly, because they impact the safety and welfare of those who enter our building or traverse oursurrounding property. The monthly meeting schedule for the committees are arranged to make this process as efficient as possible.as you can imagine, the larger the project, the longer the process.

We have many other projects on our agenda for discussion. Here’s a brief list of some of them: Interior way-finding signage; Security radios for the staff; Relamping the sanctuary chandeliers with LED bulbs; and Multiple plaster and paint repairs.

We invite the congregation to give feedback. Please continue to let us know what we can do to make our church home better.
