Background Point-of-care Ultrasound (POCUS) refers to the use of portable ultrasound technology to make diagnosJc and therapeuJcdecisions in real-Jme at the paJent’s bedside. POCUS can be used by general internists and sub-specialists to accuratelydiagnose,monitor,andtreatawide-spectrumofdiseaseprocesses.The introducJonofsmaller,hand-carriedultrasound(HCU)machineshasledtoarapidexpansionintheuseofPOCUSinrecentyears, includingpracJcingphysicians,residencyprograms,andmedicalschools. Micah Beachy, DO FACP (Mahlon H. Delp Lecturer) - is a husband, father, and AssociateProfessorofInternalMedicineatNebraskaMedicine-UniversityofNebraskaMedicalCenter,where he works as an academic hospitalist. She is a Fellow in the American College of MedicalPracJce ExecuJves (FACMPE) and is also a CerJfied Professional Coder (CPC), a CerJfiedProfessional Medical Auditor (CMPA), a CerJfied EvaluaJon and Management Auditor(CEMC), as well as a CerJfied Professional Medical Coding Curriculum instructor (CPC-I)through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Tracy is past president ofGreaterKansasCityMedicalManagersAssociaJon. She isa founderandpastpresidentofNortheast Kansas Chapter of AAPC. She is a currentmember of the AAPC of KC and hasserved on the board as educaJon chair 2011-2012. Tracy is currently serving as theAdvancementChairforMGMA.
ToddCrane,MD - is chief resident inhis last yearof EmergencyMedicine residencyat theUniversityofKansas.HeislookingforwardtoaoneyearfellowshipinEmergencyUltrasoundupon compleJng residency. He believes this will allow him to more accurately care forcriJcally illpaJentsaswellaseffecJvelyteachmedicalstudentsandresidents. Bob Doherty - is Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy for theAmerican College of Physicians (ACP), the largest physician specialty society and secondlargestmedicalorganizaJonintheUnitedStates.ACPrepresents143,000internalmedicinephysicians andmedical studentmembers.Mr. Doherty hasmore than 37 years of healthpolicy experience and is an accomplished presenter at health conferences. From 1979 to1998,Mr.DohertyworkedinthegovernmentalaffairsdepartmentoftheAmericanSocietyofInternalMedicine,andwiththemergerofASIMandACPinJune,1998,joinedtheACPasSenior Vice President for Governmental Affairs and Public Policy. He has senior staffmanagement responsibiliJes for ACP’s Division of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy,locatedinWashington,D.C.

HeatherE.Gantzer,MD,FACP-graduatedfromWashingtonUniversitySchoolofMedicine,then completed her InternalMedicine residency and chief residency at Hennepin CountyMedical Center in Minneapolis. Since 1989 she conJnues to pracJce general InternalMedicine primary care at Park Nicollet Clinic and parJcipates in the hospitalist service atMethodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. She has served as President of theMinneapolis Society of Internal Medicine, a member of the Board of Directors of theAmericanBoardof InternalMedicine,GovernoroftheMinnesotaChapteroftheAmericanCollege of Physicians, and amember of the Board of Regents of the American College ofPhysicians.
JenniferJacksonMD,FACP-isAssociateProfessorofInternalMedicineattheUniversityofKansas School of Medicine-Wichita (UKSM-W) where she serves as Associate ProgramDirector,DirectorofOutpaJentMedicalEducaJonandinpaJentwarda)endingatViaChrisJHospitalsofWichita. She is themedicaldirector forViaChrisJHospitalsTransiJonalCareClinicsfocusingontransiJonandreadmissionreducJoninavulnerablepaJentpopulaJon.These programs received the 2015 Kansas Healthcare CollaboraJve Leadership in QualityAward:AchievementinCareTransiJonsthatAddressReadmissions.Asanadvocateforfoodintegrity,healthyeaJngandsustainableagriculturalpracJces,Jacksonandherfamilystarteda farmusingrotaJonalgrazingand“beyondorganic”farmingpracJcesspecializingingrassfinishedbeef,pasturedpoultryandhoneybees.

RachelMasson,MD-grewuponafarmeastofLiberty,MO.Shea)endedDrakeUniversityforcollegeandMizzouformedicalschool.ShecompletedinternalmedicineresidencyattheMedicalUniversityofSouthCarolinaandsubsequentlyreturnedtotheKansasCityareatocompletehergeriatricfellowshipatKU. Shecurrentlyservesonthefacultythere,teachingmedicalstudentsandresidentsandpracJcingintheclinicandnursinghomesemngs. Sheenjoys the freedom that geriatrics allows her to provide individualized care and focus onqualityoflifeforherpaJents.
FernandoMerinoMDFACP-isagraduateofUniversidaddelPaisVasco,inSpain,completedhis residency in InternalMedicine at TuRsUniversity, inMassachuse)s, and his InfecJousDiseases fellowship at YaleUniversity, in ConnecJcut.Hehas extensivelyworkedwithHIVand hepaJJs co-infected populaJons. His research interest also includes Tuberculosis inHIV, and at present he is involved in a research project looking at the impact ofPneumococcal vaccines. Heworked in New York State before coming to the University ofKansasMedicalCenterin2007,whereheisanAssistantProfessorofMedicineintheDivisionofInfecJousDiseases.
JessicaR.Newman,DO FACP,isanAssistantProfessorofInternalMedicineintheDivisionof InfecJousDiseasesat theUniversityofKansasMedicalCenter,KansasCitycampus. Dr.NewmanjoinedtheDepartmentofInternalMedicineasaresidentin2006.ShecompletedaChief Resident year 2009-2010 and finished her InfecJous Diseases Fellowship in 2012before joining the faculty. She now serves as the Clinical Co-director of the University ofKansas School ofMedicine InfecJous Diseases course and is Core Faculty for the InternalMedicine Residency Program on the Kansas City campus. In this role she is developingResidentQuality Improvement educaJonal curriculumandpromoJng residentKansasACPparJcipaJon. She also serves on the InfecJous Diseases core competency commi)ee anddirectsthefellowshipHIVdidacJccurriculum.

JeffNorvell,MD-isaclinicalassistantprofessorofEmergencyMedicineattheUniversityofKansasMedical Center. He has co-authored peer-reviewed publicaJons on ultrasound inCriJcal CareMedicine and EmergencyMedicine Australasia. He is a registered diagnosJcmedicalsonographer(RDMS)intheabdomenspecialty,usesultrasoundinhisdailypracJceofEmergencyMedicine,and is involved inbedsideteachingofultrasoundtoresidentsandstudents.
CandiceRose,MD - isaclinicalendocrinologistattheUniversityofKansasMedicalCenter.SheisassistantprofessorandmoduledirectorfornutriJoneducaJonforphase1ofmedicaleducaJon at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Prior to medical school sheobtained a Masters Degree in nutriJon from the University of Kansas and worked as aregistered dieJJan. Teaching and research interests include nutriJon, metabolism, andstudent educaJon. Clinical interests include metabolic bone disease and generalendocrinology.
Lewis Sa.erwhite,MD - trained at EmoryUniversity. He currently pracJces Pulmonaryand CriJcal CareMedicine at the University of KansasMedical Center since 2011. Hisprofessional interests includePointofCareUltrasoundandPulmonaryHypertension. Dr.Sa)erwhite has developed courses and curricula for Ultrasound educaJon for theAmerican College of Chest Physicians and is an advocate for extending UltrasoundeducaJonformedicalstudentsandtraineesacrossmulJpledisciplines.
LisaShenkman,MD -graduatedfromRossUniversity in2004andsubsequentlycompletedtrainingandUniversityofKansasCombinedInternalMedicine/Psychiatryprogram. Shehasbeenfaculty in theUniversityofKansasPersistentPainManagementClinicsince2010andalsoservesasfacultyforthePsychiatryConsultaJonLiaisonService.
