You would go back if you got too much change.—
You would tip generously - even for bad service
if you thought someone was trying their best.—
You would give up the last piece of chocolate cake...
Well maybe not...but you would share!
Honesty, Generosity, Gratitude & Integrity.
Thank you for teaching us by example.
We are so proud of you, “Dard”
tonight and always.—
Congratulations to Nina Ross!
Love,
April 5, 2016
Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining us at the WJCS 2016 Annual Gala as together we celebrate our work to strengthen Westchester. Tonight we honor two extraordinary leaders, Barry Kaplan, our outgoing President of the Board, and Board member Nina Ross. They have each had a unique and profound impact on WJCS, on our local community, and the 20,000 people we serve every year.
It is fair to say that Barry Kaplan’s humility is only exceeded by his passion to do his part in making the world a better place. For over 10 years, Barry has lent his intellect, his thoughtful and deliberate guidance and his empathy to empower WJCS to strengthen our community. As our Board President and leader for the past three years, Barry has guided the agency to focus on our core strengths while evolving to serve the changing needs of our constituents. Barry is a student of ethics, studying with many rabbis to expand his knowledge and spirituality. He is a leader of the greatest kind, one who leads by being a role model for hands-on involvement and generosity of time and resources. We are deeply grateful for all that Barry has and will continue to bring to WJCS. And we are thrilled to have this opportunity to honor him.
Nina Ross is an unstoppable force of activism and philanthropy. Nina is selflessly driven by a desire to enrich the lives of children living in low-income communities and attending under-resourced schools. She has touched thousands of children as a result of her work with WJCS after school programs. And Nina’s enthusiasm has infected scores of other volunteers to do the same, resulting in the largest group of longtime volunteers WJCS has ever experienced. She has brought her passion for art to children in schools lacking resources to do so and has unleashed the creativity and joy that art brings. Nina has spent her six years on the WJCS Board as our Advocate Extraordinaire. And we are thrilled to honor her tonight.
Both Barry and Nina have used their time, talents, ideas and dollars to help make Westchester a place where all people have access to high quality mental health services and programs that address a multitude of needs. Tonight we are so proud to honor Barry Kaplan and Nina Ross.
We are deeply grateful to the devoted staff, Board members and volunteers who make the work of WJCS possible. We equally appreciate the confidence and investment of philanthropic individuals, foundations, corporations, UJA-Federation and government agencies who underwrite our efforts.
To Gala Chairs Linda & Seth Plattus, Amy & Rob Stavis and Suzanne & Andrew Yearley– thank you for making this night possible.
Have an amazing evening!
Sincerely,
Alan Trager Bernie KimbergChief Executive Officer Chief Operating Officer

Honoring
Barry KaplanBarry Kaplan serves as President of the Board of Directors of Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) and is a member of the agency’s Executive Committee. He has also served as a Board member and Treasurer. Barry’s leadership at WJCS over the past ten years reflects his desire to be actively involved in the Jewish moral imperative of Tikkun Olam – to heal and repair the world. His tenure as President during the last three years has been marked by respect, humility, keen intelligence and a “hands-on” involvement that has served to improve WJCS programs and services to Westchester’s most vulnerable residents.
Barry’s strong attachment to Israel, Jewish continuity and WJCS grew out of his support for the work of UJA-Federation of New York. Travel to Israel and participation in various Jewish study groups with Rabbi Michael Paley, Rabbi Pam Wax and Rabbi David Hoffman demonstrates his commitment to Jewish learning and self-reflection.
Barry is currently President and Founder of Maple Tree Capital Management, LLC, a private investment firm, which manages public and private investments in the media, telecom, entertainment, and leisure industries on behalf of clients. Prior to that, until May 2002, he was a Partner and Managing Director at Goldman, Sachs & Company. He is an eleven-time Institutional Investor All-Star, including several years in multiple industry categories. Barry is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and the Media and Entertainment Analysts Association of New York.
He has a BA degree from Brandeis University (1977), where he is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Brandeis International Business School, and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1980). Barry lives in Scarsdale with his wife, Rikki. They have three grown children, Lee, Natalie, and Sam.
Honoring
Nina RossNina Ross came to serve on the WJCS board in 2010 after
volunteering as a grant writer at the agency. That invaluable
experience introduced her to the breadth and value of the work
done by WJCS. Since then Nina has been a tireless advocate for
WJCS and its programs to uplift children and families.
Nina has been the board liaison since 2010 to WJCS’ Off the Street
(OTS) at Hamilton Elementary School and has initiated and organized
significant volunteer programs to provide homework and computer
help, tutoring and enrichment. Nina founded the Art Explorers program
to teach OTS students creative and imaginative lessons through art.
Nina is an active member of UJA- Federation, having served in numerous capacities. She is a
founding member of the Westchester UJA Women’s Impact Philanthropy group, Nedivot. Nina
is also a board member of the Scarsdale Student Transfer Education Program (STEP). Her family
was a STEP host family from 2012 to 2014 for a student from an under resourced Memphis high
school, providing him an opportunity to improve his future through education and experience.
Nina’s passion for art has led her to co-found an art business, Art on the Edge, LLC, whose
mission is to enable clients to meet artists in their studios to learn directly about the process and
ideas behind the art.
Nina graduated from SUNY Binghamton and NYU Law School, where she met Ivan, wisely married
him, moved to Scarsdale and raised 3 compassionate, bright sons, Ethan, Tyler and Josh - Nina
and Ivan’s crowning achievement!
