Junior: Age 8 and in 3rd grade to age 13 Senior: Age 14-18 Give a speech to your 4-H club on a health or safety topic. County Contest: Select a topic of health or safety that affects family living, whether it is in the home, on the farm, on the highway or in public places. A local example and supporting statistics (with sources cited) are required. Junior division contestants’ speeches are to be 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. Senior division contestants’ speeches are to be 4.0 to 5.5 minutes in length. No note cards, visual aids or props are permitted. Prompters (scripts, verbal cues, signaling) and props may not be used when the contestant is speaking. Please contact the Extension Office for more complete guidelines for your speech. Area Contest: An unlimited number of County participants may be sent to the Area Contest. The Judges at the County Contest will decide who will advance to the Area Contest. Judges decisions are final. State Fair Contest: Three Junior and three senior participants will be selected to advance to the State Fair Contest from each Area Contest. Participants will be required to use a microphone at the State level. Give a speech to your 4-H club on a health or safety topic. County Contest: Select a topic of health or safety that affects family living, whether it is in the

Members may not enter demonstrations, speeches or skits from previous 4-H project years. In addition, members may not submit demonstrations, speeches or skits they have used for non 4-H speaking competitions or school class work.

Junior – Age 8 to 11 and in the 3rd grade A team is made of 2 people sharing the speaking and teaching role.

Give a demonstration in your local 4-H club or give a speech about 4-H to a local group (school, community, etc.)

County Contest: Classes: Junior Individual; Intermediate Individual; Junior Team: Intermediate

Team The presenter uses appropriate props and other visual aides to teach others

about a subject or how to do something. May use charts, posters, pictures to deliver their Illustrated Talk or to stress

points with their Demonstration. No PowerPoint or computer generated messages. Presenters are evaluated on their ability to present a speech. Illustrated Talks/Demonstrations should last between 6-9 minutes. Please contact the Extension Office for more complete guidelines for your

talk/demonstration. State Fair Contest: County may send up to five participants per class, with no individual participating

in more than one class. The Judges at the County Contest will decide who will advance to the State Contest. Judges decisions are final.

Ohio State Fair Communications Day Team Presentations: Thursday, Aug. 4 Individual Presentations: Wednesday, Aug. 3

Intermediate – Age 12-13 Senior – Age 14 and up

Give a demonstration in your local 4-H club or give a speech about 4-H to a local group (school, community, etc.)

County Contest: Classes: Intermediate Individual, Intermediate Team and Senior Individual The presenter uses appropriate props and computer generated visual aides to

teach others about a subject or how to do something. Examples: • A demonstration may be delivered in this category. PowerPoint type slides

may be added in addition to other props to help present their message. • An Illustrated Talk may be delivered in this category, with the member using

PowerPoint type technology to present their entire visual message; accompanied by their live narration

Requires live speech delivered along with the PowerPoint message. (No pre-recorded narration)

Member is evaluated on their communication skills and their ability to effectively use technology within their Illustrated Talk or Demonstration.

Illustrated Talks/Demonstrations should be 9-12 minutes in length. Please contact the Extension Office for more complete guidelines for your

COMMUNICATIONS & HEALTH AND SAFETY PUBLIC SPEAKING/SKIT - CONTINUED Marketing Junior – Thank You Card Intermediate – T-shirt Design Senior –4-H Infomercial

Junior – Age 8-14 Intermediate – Age 12-13 Senior – Age 14 and up

Entry must be the original work of the member. Computer graphics are permitted, provided they are the original work of the

member. No commercially designed clipart may be used. Use of copyrighted or protected characters or logos is not permitted, with the

exception of the 4-H emblem. Junior - original “thank you” card with artwork on the cover and a verse or

message inside thanking a business, individual, or others for their support of 4-H. Card should be on 8 ½ x 11 cardstock, folded once. Any medium (crayon, chalk, pen and ink, pencil, markers, etc.) may be used. Evaluation will be based on the quality, creativity, and originality of the design and the originality of the message.

Intermediate - original t-shirt design with artwork and slogan promoting a county or the state 4-H program or some aspect of that program, such as junior fair, camp, etc. T-shirt design should be submitted on 8 ½ x 11 paper. Any medium (crayon, chalk, pen and ink, pencil, markers, etc.) may be used. Evaluation will be based on the quality, creativity, and originality of the design, the originality of the message, and design’s ability to persuade the viewer to action.

Senior - 4-H Infomercial, a video “short” that promotes a county or the state 4-H project or program or some aspect of that project or program, such as junior fair, camp, etc. This must be a fully automated, stand-alone video presentation, 2-4 minutes long, with sound and narration as appropriate. Think “YouTube.” The video should include recorded visual, sound, and narration to convey a message. Evaluation will be based on the quality and originality of the message, which should persuade the viewer to action, as well as on the creative and professional use of technology.

State Fair Contest: County may send an unlimited number of participants per class. Entries must be submitted by 4p.m. on Tuesday, August 4. An official, signed

entry card must accompany each entry.

All entries in the Marketing Division must be submitted for judging by 4pm on Tuesday, August 4. Thank you cards, t-shirt designs, and videos may be dropped off at the OSF Registration Desk in the Youth Center or dropped off or mailed to the State 4-H Office and received no later than Tuesday, August 2. Judging will take place on Wednesday morning, August 5. Judging is NOT open to the public
