THE UNFORTUNATE TRUTH ABOUT TOXINS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR IMPACT ON YOUR BODY:
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
With Dr. Sandra Bevacqua, Ph.D. World Integrated Systems in Health
HOW TOXIC ARE WE? In the recent past, it was believed that toxic
exposures happened accidentally: Children eating: paint chips, dirt, anything NOT food Radiological procedures Overdosing of medication Living in older homes (old plumbing, paint, mold etc.) Chemical exposure at work
This is no longer true. In the last few decades through individual testing, we have found that everyone has some significant heavy metal or environmental toxin present and that >95% have at least one toxic overload that is well beyond what is considered safe by any standard.

THE CLEAN AIR ACT REQUIRES EPA STANDARDS FOR THE 6 MOST COMMON AIR POLLUTANTS Ozone-
Ground level ozone created by chemical rxns btw nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the presence of sunlight
Ozone can: Cause shortness of breath and pain when taking a deep breath; More difficult to breath;
Increase frequency of asthma attacks. Inflame and damage the airways; Cause coughing and sore or scratchy throat. Aggravate lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Make lungs more susceptible to infection. Continue to damage lung tissue even when the symptoms have disappeared
Particulate Matter- Coarse- industry, roadways, forest fires; Fine/gases- power plants, automobiles, industry Causes lung and heart diseases, premature death, acid rain
Carbon Monoxide- from combustion. Can cause decr oxygen in blood and heart, angina, low exercise tolerance
Nitrogen Oxides- vehicles, industry; incr rate of lung diseases and asthma Sulfur Dioxide- power plants, industry, smelting; Causes numerous lung
diseases Lead- industry, old water pipes, smelting, paint (no longer in gasoline);
accumulates in bones, noted potent neurotoxin, effects kidneys, cardiovascular system, immune sys., especially toxic for developing fetus; Behavioral issues, lowered I.Q. and learning deficits in young children. ©

FOOD AS A SOURCE OF TOXICITY
"We used to say that plastic bottles, makeup or other consumer plastics were the major source of BPA exposure. Now we know it's most likely diet.” ~ Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana
Persistent organic pollutant residues (POPs) are present in virtually all categories of foods, including baked goods, fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products.

All living organisms on Earth now carry measurable levels of POPs in their tissues! POPs have been found in sea mammals at levels high enough to qualify their bodies as hazardous waste under US law. There is strong evidence that exposure to even miniscule amounts of POPs at critical periods of development—particularly in utero—can cause irreversible damage. The effects of such exposures may take years to develop, sometimes appearing first in the offspring of exposed parents. POPs are persistent in that they are not easily metabolized and can be traced in offspring for multiple generations!

DON’T GET THIRSTY IN FLINT, MICHIGAN!
CNN January 16, 2016 Flint , MI- CNN reports this is one of the nations most toxic places. Water supply was from the Great Lakes, now to save money it comes from the Flint River, a source of some of the most corrosive water in the nation. The water corrodes the pipes and now the population is full of lead, a well known potent neurotoxin Many other cities in the US have lead in their pipes.
“There is no known level of lead exposure
that is considered safe.”

WATER TREATMENT: IS TAP WATER SAFE? Chlorine and other water treatment chemicals (somewhat toxic by themselves),
react with ordinary organic particles in the water (manure from livestock, dead animals, fallen leaves, etc.) to create 100’s of extremely toxic byproducts which are not monitored or regulated at all. Although Chlorine has been studied extensively. Chloramine, now used in place of chlorine has not EPA regulates only 9 of 600+ known pollutants generated by chlorine or chloramine treatment DBP’s are 1000X more toxic than chlorine!
The health effects of breathing the vapors and having contaminated water on your skin are unknown at this time. DBPs can’t be removed by boiling, distilling or evaporation. Chloramines combine with organic material to create iodoacids & nitrosamines Three main types byproducts known to produce dangerous health effects:
Trihalomethanes (THMs) – causes cancer in lab animals, triggers free radical production in the body, associated with bladder cancer and gestational and developmental problems Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) – lead to central nervous system depression and drowsiness. Can irritate skin and mucous membranes Haloacetic Acids (HAAs) –Probable human carcinogen associated with neurological problems, growth retardation, low birth weight and sperm toxicity. Liver disease in test animals.
Pregnant women and unborn babies are at grave risk. Possible problems include: developmental/reproductive abnormalities, stillbirth, miscarriage, low birth weight, neural tube defects (developmental problems with baby’s brain and spinal cord). ©

IS BOTTLE WATER SAFER? Independent testing from the
Environmental Working Group (EWG) found: 38 low-level contaminates in bottled water An average of 8 chemicals in each of the 10 brands
tested They found: Disinfection byproducts (DBPs), caffeine,
Tylenol, nitrate, industrial chemicals, arsenic and bacteria
Plus, plastic from the container can leach into the water (BPA and phthalates)
Not to mention the environmental costs!

ROUNDUP EVERYWHERE! AIR, WATER, FOOD… Roundup (aka glyphosate and it’s still toxic degradation
byproduct, AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid)) found in 75% of air and rain samples from the Mississippi’s agricultural belt.
Recent research shows that glyphosate may act as an endocrine disrupter and have carcinogenic effects
Air born toxins pose a unique risk because they enter into the body through the lungs instead of through GI system which includes a trip through the liver before being pumped to the rest of the body by the heart.
Today’s research shows that glyphosate and it’s components are far more toxic than believed when approved for use.
80% of Argentina’s children are contaminated with toxins from Roundup which is used heavily in that country.

COMMON ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS Bisphenol-A (BPA): easily leaches into food and water. Found in:
polycarbonated plastics (food and drink containers, bottle cap liners, lining of tin cans, toys, baby bottles, dental sealants, flame retardants, plastic wrap). 85% of canned foods on the shelves today are lined by the manufactures
to prevent a metallic flavor in the food from the can. Food from the cans of 10 of those companies tested were found to contain up to 80 parts per billion. This is 27 times greater the amount researchers need to cause breast cancer.
Phthalates: added to plastics to make them softer and more flexible. They have “extended” staying power. Found in: plastic bags, food packaging, water bottles, detergents, children’s toys, shower curtains, soaps, shampoo, perfumes, hair spray, nail polish, IV tubing, vinyl floors, glues, ink, pesticides.
Parabens: used as preservatives in cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical products. Found in many solid tumors at high concentrations. May be a carcinogen.

COMMON ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS Dioxin: the general name for 100’s of chemicals
that are highly persistent in the environment. An unintentional byproduct of many industrial processes involving chlorine such as waste incineration, chemical and pesticide manufacturing, pulp and paper bleaching.
Small molecules are diffused into the atmosphere then land on the soil where they are eaten by soil microbes. From there, they work their way up the food chain. Transmitted through breast milk, dairy products,
meat and fish. We receive 90% of our dioxin exposure through food.

COMMON ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS Pesticides and Herbicides: especially atrazine, simazine,
heptachlor and other organophosphates and organochlorines have been found the be toxic to the nervous system and reproductive systems of humans. Also contributes to developmental defects.
Heavy Metals: Cadmium and arsenic endocrine disruption has been studied, and endocrine disruption has been indicated in relation to lead and mercury exposure. More studies are underway.
PBDE’s: A persistent organic pollutant (POP). Stored in: animal fats. Found in: dairy products, meat, fish, human breast milk; flame retardants used on furniture, curtains, mattresses, carpets, TV's and computer castings. Banned in several countries.
PCB’s: Banned from new products since 1976. Highly stable and degrade very slowly. (POP). Mixed with adhesives, inks, paints, dyes and a component of plastics. ©

ESTROGEN DOMINANCE: MEN AND WOMEN The body’s ability to detoxify estrogen and testosterone levels depends
on the liver’s detoxification capability. A healthy liver rapidly breaks estrogen down into more benign forms
of it’s metabolites. Isoflavones (from soy, kudzu, flax seeds) support P450 1A1 & 1A2
detoxification, converting estrogen into less harmful metabolites. (C2) P450 3A4 & P450 1B1 promote conversion of estrogens to harmful
estrogen metabolites (C4 & C16). In the case of zinc deficiency, testosterone not processed by the liver is
converted to estrogen. Use of Nettle Root extracts can be used to block androgen conversion to estrogen.
Help with Estrogen Detoxification: Eat a healthy high fiber, high fat diet rich in vegetables, seeds and
other digestible protein foods Establish normal BMs Take in foods rich in Indole-3-carbinol such as cruciferous vegetables:
bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, and turnip
Avoid Cytochrome P450 enzyme disrupting medications

MOST TOXINS ARE LIPOPHILIC CHEMICALS (LC)
Our tissues are warehouses of all the chemicals we’ve ever been exposed to.
LC love fat and accumulate in our fat, especially inside fat cells.
LC are not easily detoxified and may be stored for decades.
Most LCs are able to cross the placenta and reach a growing fetus. They are also likely to turn up in cord blood and breast milk.
Do not assume that just because a chemical is on the market, that it has been tested for safety in humans. The majority of chemicals available have very little to no testing done to verify their safety.
The government is just beginning to look into researching chronic chemical exposure.

TOXICITY HINDERS WEIGHT LOSS During weight loss, the
decrease in fat mass results in the mobilization of stored fat soluble toxins.
The released toxins decrease thyroid function.
Those who strive to lose weight often hit a plateau.
Detoxifying the body can help to eliminate the plateau.
Reduction in adipose tissue
Releases stored toxins

RECENT CONNECTIONS IN RESEARCH: Glycemic index and resultant blood sugar
instability differs widely by the individual- may be due to differing toxic profile
Estrogen Dominance is associated with an increase in the incidence of many types of cancer in men, women and children
Food sensitivities have recently been associated with hormone I mbalances and may be due to a heavy burden of endocrine disrupters

YES, IT CAN! Our bodies have the innate ability to detoxify We have numerous organs and biochemical
detoxification systems or “machines” to do this Each detoxification system has its own
biochemical needs such as oxygen, water and a unique list of specific nutrients.
Let’s see how simple it is:

WHY IS THE LIVER SO IMPORTANT? Second largest organ in the body
In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, a healthy liver is seen as the most critical element in the body's ability to fight disease and function optimally. I agree!
The liver has over 700 functions: Neutralizes and balances excesses of normal components in the
blood Cholesterol Cellular wastes Surplus calcium Surplus glucose
Breaks Down Most environmental toxins Hormones Pharmaceutical, over the counter & recreational drugs.
Produces bile which is essential in the breakdown of fats and is the organ which stores Vitamin A, D, E and K. ©

CAUTIONS & CONSIDERATIONS FOR DETOXIFICATION There are many health conditions that may be
adversely affected by certain detoxification methods. Impaired organ systems (liver, kidneys, heart) Health conditions: cancer, autoimmune disease, IBS,
crone’s disease, parasitic infection, diabetes, fibromyalgia, depression, psychological chemical imbalances, hormone imbalance, etc
Special considerations: pregnancy, children, the use of many medications, addiction
If you are not confident, then consult with a knowledgeable practitioner about what methods of detoxification are appropriate for your body.

WHEN TO CONSULT WITH A PRACTITIONER Symptoms you have now may worsen before
they get better during a detoxification. If this happens, stop the detox and get help.
We strongly encourage anyone with a known heavy toxic load to work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner from the very beginning. When an individual has a large heavy metal or
chemical load, the detoxification process must go slowly!! Serious and lasting damage can result from rapid detoxification.
Work with your healthcare practitioner to put together a program that attends specifically to the toxins you are dealing with and works for your life style.
