Annual Training

Conference

June 14-17, 2016

Renaissance Asheville Hotel

Asheville, North Carolina

T he Vibration Institute will hold the 2016 Annual

Training Conference in Asheville, North

Carolina, at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel.

The location of the Renaissance Hotel puts

guests in walking distance of many restaurants and

historic sights. The Wall Street Journal recently published

a major travel story on Asheville as a vibrant location

calling it “an insider’s escape”.

The 2016 Annual Training Conference will provide

training and education on practical vibration technology

and networking opportunities for attendees. It is the place

for the vibration and condition monitoring community to

meet every year. Our sessions emphasize the use of

basic and advanced techniques to achieve an outstanding

predictive maintenance program. Identification, analysis,

and correction techniques used in vibration analysis and

condition monitoring, including alternative technologies

such as oil analysis and ultrasound are topics to be

presented.

The Conference will begin with a general interest opening

session to orient attendees to the latest ideas in

technology and practices in the vibration analysis and

condition monitoring field. Major Sessions on vibration

isolation and damping in structures and machines, gas

turbine analysis, analysis and condition monitoring of

reciprocating machines, and finite element analysis are

planned. Sessions on time waveform analysis and signal

processing will be provided for analysts to sharpen their

skills. Attendees are invited to a “bring your problem”

session to bring a difficult or unsolvable problem for

discussion. Case history and best practice maintenance

sessions will round out the program.

For the most up-to-date information, visit

www.vi-institute.org/conference

2016 Exhibit Hall

The Annual Training Conference will include an exhibit

hall where vendors will have equipment on-hand for

conducting condition-based monitoring using vibration

analysis, thermography, oil analysis, and ultrasound. The

exhibits provide attendees an overview of the technology

available for the effective operation of a predictive

maintenance program within their organization.

Concurrent Sessions

In an effort to better serve our conference attendees and

meet their educational and training needs, the 2016

Training Conference agenda will feature concurrent

session tracks and an expanded program that will

emphasize related technologies. Attendees will have the

opportunity to “customize” their conference experience

based on their individual educational needs. In addition,

the Institute will again host an Academic Track at the

2016 Conference. Students and faculty from around the

world have submitted papers for review, spanning topics

from structural dynamics to noise cancellation. Paper

titles and authors will be listed on the Vibration Institute

website as soon as the review process is completed. Join

us in welcoming and encouraging our future colleagues!

PRE-CONFERENCE

Workshop 1: Resonance in Mechanical, Electrical, and Acoustical Systems Instructors: Nelson L. Baxter, ABM Technical Services, and Ray D. Kelm. P.E., Kelm Engineering Tuesday, June 14, 2016 8 am—5 pm

Resonance will cause excessive vibration leading to possible loss of product quality and machine failure. The concepts of resonance in mechanical, electrical, and acoustical systems are reviewed. Parameters that affect natural frequencies and forces that excite resonance will be explored. Analogies among physical parameters that control natural frequencies will be presented. Applications and case histories will be used to apply and illustrate the concepts.

1-DAY WORKSHOPS

Workshop 2: Balancing of Rotating Machinery Instructors: Kevin Guy, Delaware Analysis Services, Inc. Tuesday, June 14, 2016 8 am—5 pm

Balancing is the solution to vibration problems caused by mass unbalance but it cannot be used to solve problems like misalignment and resonance. This one-day training course is intended to relate basic balancing concepts including techniques, limits, and applications as well as show methods to discern whether or not vibration can be eliminated through balancing. Balancing strategy should seek to correct critical machine vibration problems with a minimum number of moves and lost production time. Case histories and examples will be employed to illustrate these techniques and strategies. This course is designed to refresh and enhance the abilities of the experienced technician and to introduce an awareness of the methods to managers who wish to monitor balancing activities.

Training Course

4-Day

The Vibration Institute’s Introduction to Machinery Vibrations

(IMV) course will take place Tuesday through Friday (June

14-17) at the 2016 Annual Training Conference. Registrants

for the IMV course are encouraged to attend the Conference

lunches, Exhibit Hall, and social networking hours. The IMV

course prepares attendees to perform a range of simple,

single channel machinery vibration condition monitoring and

diagnostic activities, is recommended for individuals as an

introduction to machinery vibrations and is partial

preparation for the Vibration Analyst Category I Certification

Exam. The workshops and demonstrations, scheduled

throughout the training course, are used to illustrate theory

and applications.

The IMV training course will begin at 8 a.m. and

conclude at 5:00 p.m. daily, Tuesday through Friday.

Participants receive a copy of the course notes and

PowerPoints, workbook containing examples and workshop

problems to be completed, the Body of Knowledge found in

ISO 18436-2 Annex A, training course examination study

guide, calculator, ruler, and certificate of completion. The

IMV course contains, at minimum, the required material and

is considered partial preparation for the Category I

examination for Vibration Analysts which will be given on

Saturday, June 18 (separate registration required).

Certification

Examinations

June 18, 2016

Certification Examinations for Vibration

Analysts in all categories are scheduled for Saturday,

June 18. Examinations for Balancing of Rotating

Machinery will also be given on Saturday.

Qualifications for examinations for Vibration Analysts

at the four different levels are summarized below.

Saturday, June 18, 2016 8 am—1 pm

Category I: Capable of performing simple machinery

vibration measurements involving single-channel

condition monitoring and diagnosis.

Category II: Basic knowledge of machinery vibration,

capable of routing data collection and periodic

monitoring, and ability to perform basic fault diagnosis

and condition evaluation.

Category III: Certification in Category II; capable of

carrying out fault diagnosis, condition evaluation, and

acceptance testing; ability to set up periodic monitoring

programs and perform minor correction actions.

Category IV: Certification in Category III; capable of

solving chronic mechanical problems, conducting

advanced fault and condition analysis, and performing

vibration control procedures.
