Once again I come to you from the great state of Texas, yippy. I hope you are all hav-ing an enjoyable summer. Thank you to all of you that participated in the Independence Day parade. We had 19 well decorated cars representing the Club—much more than I had expected. Our group was followed by a couple of other car clubs like the Model A club and they were preceded by the Porsche club and rightfully so. It was nice to see how well the Cor-vette model was received by the many parade participants lining the route.

After the parade it was straight to Frank and Barbara LoMonaco’s for the BBQ. I find this to be one of the most enjoyable events of the year. The atmosphere is very casual with a number of small groups of members congregating on the back deck. [continued on page 2]

As usual, Frank and his son John did a masterful job with the burgers and hot dogs. It is

the one day of the year that I need to have a hotdog. There is something very special about hotdogs and the 4th of July plus there is also a connection with hotdogs and Corvette. Actually, there is connection between Baseball, Hotdogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet and every Corvette convertible built between 1990 and 1996. If you do not remember Sharon Smith’s trivia question some time back, click on this link and see what it is:

Why There's A Baseball Bat, Hot Dog, And Apple Pie In Every 1996 Chevy Corvette Convertible. I saw this first hand when my son and I along with a friend toured the factory in March of 1990.

As you know due to its proximity to the Independence Day event, the July meeting was cancelled. Tony Megowan did however take the time to gather ideas for future runs and events. I’m sure Tony will be get-ting together a group soon to plan events for the 2017 Events Calendar. If you have

any ideas, please contact Tony or bring them up at any CCSB General Meeting. We want these runs, events, and gatherings to be well attended and enjoyable to a large cross section of our club. For those of you who have been wondering about the prospects of a mid-engine Vette, I come across the following two articles.

Mid-engine C8 Corvette to bow at 2018 Detroit Auto Show The mid-engine 2018 Chevrolet Corvette might have just been outed It would appear that a mid-engine version of the Corvette is getting closer and closer to reality. The biggest confusions I am seeing is when it will ac-tually be released and what is it going to cost. The prospects of owning a mid-engine C8 is very enticing but they are going to have to do something to beat the enjoyment I am getting from that little red C7. I am also very pleased to announce that Dennis Trammell will speak at the

August meeting on his experiences at Corvette Performance Driving School. Dennis also submitted an article of his driving experience in this newsletter issue—see page 7. See you at the meeting August 2nd, 6:30 PM at High Sierra Grill.

For August, we will start off with MB2 on the 7th of August. Since 2007, MB2 Raceway has provided the state-of-the-art indoor electric go-karting facilities. They offer a high-speed race simulation with a challenging and unique indoor road course that is fun for all skill levels and ages. Once I know how many people are going to attend, I will have a time and cost. Afterwards we will then proceed to the Thousand Oaks Mall where we will dine at Stacked. Stacked offers Burgers, Pizza, Salads and Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Choose between dozens of ingredi-

ents to create the perfect meal for your taste. Or you can select one of their rec-ommended signature items.

Unfortunately, we could not get tickets for Music Under the Stars (we will try again next year) so instead we are planning on attend-ing the Jimmy Buffett Tribute, Adventures in Parrotdise on the 20th of August at Constitution Park, Camarillo. Paula and I will get there early to stake out a spot and then I will leave to meet whom-ever else is going at the Vons parking lot off of Seaward Ave in Ventura. I will have times as we get closer to the date. The concert is free and we will plan to have a picnic there. We will all bring our main dish and something else to share with everyone. We are going to cancel the Runch Run on the 21st so we won’t have back to back events.

For September, the Runch Run scheduled for the 11th of September will be at Boccali’s Ojai for Pizza and Pasta. More details will fol-low as we get closer. We also have a run to Idyllwild from the 16th-18th organized by Sharon Smith (signups for this run have already closed).

In October, we had a run to the Jet Propulsion Lab but they held their open house in June so this run has been cancelled. We will try again next year. On the 16th, we will have a Runch Run to Graze Kitchen in Pismo Beach. On the 23rd we will have a trip to Solvang for the Scarecrow Fest. Solvang’s Scarecrow Fest was originally started as a way to drive business to each of the participating companies, storefronts, merchants and organizations, as well as to the town and the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley locales, in general. As added enticement for Solvang visitors, the Valley will play host to numerous and varied activities during the month-long Scarecrow Fest stretch. Finally on the 29th of October we will have the Pumpkin Pursuit hosted by Richard and Mary Nohr.

Well that is all for now. Remember to enjoy your time with friends and Corvettes. Next month I will have the second and final installment of our trip home.

As we have

done for many years now, our club participated in the city of Santa Bar-bara's 4th of July parade. After being given the wrong staging information by parade officials two different times, all 19 cars finally came together and lined up in a new spot this year...right on State Street. Thank goodness for cell phones so we could keep in touch and let everyone know where we were! [continued on page 5]

With our cars all decorated we slowly paraded down State Street before an enthusiastic crowd - engines roaring, horns honking and drivers and passengers waving. People really seem to love seeing our beautiful cars. After the parade, our group proceeded to the home of Frank and Barbara LoMonaco for a traditional 4th of July BBQ. Our beautiful cars were parked on the lawn in the backyard and it was fun to sit on the deck and

look down at the cars while relaxing and eating and being with friends. Frank made his famous Margaritas (a real crowd pleaser) and John, Frank and Barbara's son, did a magnificent job grilling all of those hamburgers and hot dogs. Thank you, John! We couldn't have done it without you. Our president, Peter Mackins and our ac-tivities director, Tony Megowan outdid themselves with their fabu-lous and delicious and beautiful dessert creations. And thanks to

Peter, Sandra Christeson and Carole Burgess for their much welcomed and appreciated help with clean up. We spent the afternoon eating, sipping, and talking with friends. It was a great way to celebrate the 4th of July. Thanks to all who participated.

During the summer and fall months, Plan B Win-

ery holds an event on their patio on the second Sunday of each month called “Second Sunday Supper”. They provide a live band, food trucks and of course Plan B wines. You can buy their wine by the glass or by the bottle and kick back, relax and enjoy the music. On the second Sunday of July, we met with Deb & Dave Hanks at Plan B Winery. Unfortu-nately, no one else from CCSB was able to join us but we all had a good time. One of the food trucks was called Chef vs. Shrimp and you can ask Dave just how spicy the jambalaya was – he’s probably still sweating! The Megowan’s decided to skip the shrimp truck, and totally indulged in the other food truck – Desserts to Die For. In case you are wondering about the name, the food truck is a hearse and they serve the desserts from a wooden coffin. The Shari Puorto Band is a modern blues/rock band and provided the entertainment for the afternoon. Shari has been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Ethridge and Etta James. Shari and the bands connection with the audi-ence and their performance onstage were infectious. Deb & Dave joined other people on the dance floor, and of course we did the traditional toast to the train as it came by. They are having this event thru November and we are planning on attending them. If you want to join us let me know. The next one is on the 14th of August and will feature Laura Cozzi and her Soul Machine Band. The food trucks will be Rock Chef Rolls and Desserts to Die For. All in all, we’ve decided it’s not a bad way to end a beautiful summer weekend on a Sunday afternoon – good music, good food, good wine and good friends.

What a great show! That was amazing how they pulled that off! One of the best shows we’ve ever seen at PCPA!...Those are just a few of the comments from your fellow CCSB members who enjoyed seeing Shrek, the Musical at PCPA in Solvang on Saturday 7/23/16. The theatre was packed and nobody walked out of there disappointed. Shrek was amazing! Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears. An unlikely hero finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey (who by the way stole the show) and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of

mess that calls for a real hero. Irreverently fun for the whole family, Shrek proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.

Our caravan to Solvang consisted of 3 little red Corvettes (Art & June Aldritt, Fred Markey & Marilyn and Tony & Paula Megowan) and a white Cadillac ATS (Sandy Halverson). Since Art was familiar with the road that took us past Nojoqui Falls, Art & June lead the way up to Solvang. Once we turned off 101, the wonderfully curvy road was just made for Corvettes as it wound past Nojoqui Falls Park and some very nice scenery. We personally had never been on that road before, but will definitely remember it for the future. We met up with Jim & Judy Wafer and Fred & Sharon Smith at the theatre. Everyone brought their own picnic dinner and something to share with the rest of the group. The temperature during the day had been quite hot, but the weather was perfect as we all enjoyed our meal and the company of our friends on the lawn outside the theatre. Even in the summer it can get pretty cold at PCPA; and it did cool off quite a bit for the performance. But we were prepared with jackets & blankets – although we didn’t need as many blan-kets as usual this year.

Member Highlight: Dennis Trammell—CORVETTE OWNERS SCHOOL [SEE STORY BELOW] For those of you that have purchased a new 2016 Corvette Stingray or Z06, you will be receiving an invitation to participate in the Spring Mountain Performance Driving School in Pahrump, Nevada at a reduced cost of $1,000. This represents a 60% savings off the regular price of $2,500 for a 2 day driving school. I high-ly recommend taking advantage of this offer at this reduced price and this article is my experi-ence at the driving school. I arrived late Sunday afternoon at Pahrump, Ne-vada since class started early Monday morning with breakfast at 7:00AM followed by an 8:00AM registration. At registration, you are given a colored wrist band to wear when you check in as they have 2 different classes of 20 drivers. This banding method makes it easier for staff to determine which class you are

in after breakfast and lunch. Both breakfast and lunch are included with the school but you are on your own for dinner (a restaurant list is provided at registration). All condo/hotel rooms are on the second floor over gar-ages for the Spring Mountain club members that store their track cars. There is a nice balcony overlooking the track, air conditioning in each room, a small refrigera-tor, microwave and a coffee maker along with a place setting for 4. Breakfast varied from cold cereal and pastries to hot oatmeal, bacon, sausage, eggs and toast.

Lunches were also good—spaghetti & meat balls, mixed salad and cold cuts. Drinks offered were coffee, tea, soda and juice. Each day started in class with instructors discussing 2 exercises which were to be executed that day. Instruction generally lasted 25 minutes followed by a short break before heading out to our assigned Corvettes. Stingrays had the Z51 performance package and a 3LT interior; Z06’s had a 3LZ interior. The only difference between our personal Corvette and the class Corvettes was the replacement of DOT 3 brake fluid with DOT 4 due to the higher boiling point. They also adjusted the front wheels as instructed in the Corvette owner’s manual in the section under “Tracking your car”. Day 1: They divided us into 2 groups of 10 drivers. Each group did a different exercise then switched so that everyone did the same 2 exercises by the end of

the day (usually around 4:00PM). The first exercise was to get used to how the car sounded and felt when you did a panic stop. We would push the brake pedal to the floor and keep it there until the car came to a complete stop. About half of the group would ease up on the brake or take their foot off altogether. So, we all would do it over again. The instructors then showed us how steering is possible while ABS is engaged. We then

practiced that maneuver in our Vettes. The second exercise was a slalom course which is de-signed to get the driver used to looking out the driver’s side window for the cones to line up then make your turn. The instructors said that some of us were still looking through the front windshield so they installed a sun visor across the windshield to force drivers to look out the driver’s and passenger’s side windows for the cones to line up. Then, back to the classroom for proper track

braking to slow down the Vette before entering corners. It’s not like street braking. We would do hard braking at first then ease up on the brakes until the proper speed is reached. On a long backstretch, there were three signs at the end—#3, #2 and #1. We were told to get up to 45 mph and hit the brake hard at sign #3, start easing off the brake at sign #2 then by sign #1 our foot should be off the brake and speed should be down to 15 MPH. If our speed was higher then we did not hit the brake hard enough at sign #3. Off to lunch at Noon and back in class by 1:00PM then two more exercises. The first exercise required driving around cones in a figure eight to practice when to make a turn into corners. The second exercise was learning to take full advantage of the track to flatten out corners as much as possible. The latter was done on a small oval course. Then, we finally got on the track with only 10 cars at a time in 3 groups each behind an instructor’s car. We played follow the leader by staying in either 3rd or 4th gear just getting used to the track. The instructors and spotters monitored our driving ability so that they could put like drivers together in the same group. End of Day 1. [continued on page 9]

Day 2: First, we had 2 practice times on the track paying attention to where the turn cones were located and having the instructors go a little faster around

the track. Then right before the lunch break, everyone got a chance to ride along with one of the instructors as they went around the track at about 80% of the Corvette maximum capabilities. Instructors had us watch when they braked and their line around the course. They really made it look easy plus they were very relaxed while driving. After lunch, we got 3 more practice times on the track before it was time for a class photo with the instructors. The final demonstration was showing how to perform Launch Control. On the second day, there was a photographer taking 25 to 30 pictures of each of us driving around the track. They then were trying to sell us large prints. However with helmets on and sunglasses it was hard to see our faces and recognize who was driving. We each got a souvenir water bottle at the start of class and used them a lot while in the cars plus a graduation certificate (had to buy the nice frame for it) which was nice.

Overall it was well worth every dollar the school cost and it was a great experience. I highly recommend new C7 members take this class even if you have to pay full price. I can’t wait until the next time I get a chance to be on a track.

Does anyone need two Cadillacs? Not really. So why did CCSB Member, Hib Halverson, buy a second Caddy ATS-V? As he tells Di-rector of Membership, Pat Bloom, “I just really like the car's exterior design, its inte-rior, its performance and its handing.” Be-cause I just turned 65 and I've been daily-driving my modified V6 Camaro for 15 years along with my soon (I hope) becoming a can-cer survivor, I decided to make a for-the-most-part, frivolous purchase of a 2016, ATS-V Coupe. It's Cadillac's answer to the BMW M3 and is powered by a 464-hp twin-turbo V6.

“This car,” Halverson continues, “which I’ve named 'Blue BMW Buster' or 'Triple-B' for short, is a bit different than the four-door my Wife, the Fair-est Sandra the Red owns. Most obvious is body type–a Coupe. They are different from the Sedans from the A-pillar back. Doors, side view mirrors, quarter panels fenders, rear deck are all different. My car has the Tremec T6060 six-speed manual and the 3.73 axle whereas Sandy's car has an eight-speed auto-matic with 2.85 gears. We went for CUE with Navigation on the 4-dr. but I did not order that on my 2-dr. It's a thousand dollar option. I can buy a bunch of

Garmin’s at Costco for that so when I need a GPS, I'll just put one of our handhelds in the car. I also skipped the red brake calipers we ordered on the Sedan mainly because while they are red, they are not the "slut-lipstick" red that I had expected when we placed the order. They are a sort of dark red/gray color and don't stand out like I thought they would, so on the Coupe, I took the standard brake calipers. If I really want them slut-lipstick-red, I can buy one of the Eastwood Company's caliper painting kits in red. I went all in and ordered the Carbon Fiber package which consists of a larger front splitter, hood vents and a rear diffuser made of CF along the front fascia extensions, composite rocker panel skirts and a larger rear deck spoiler. The only other options were the HUD and that awesome Vector Blue paint.” That's probably more about ATS-Vs than Corvette folks want to know but if your want to learn more, read Hib’s ATS-V Blog on the Cadillac V-Net site here: http://www.cadillacvnet.com/forums/ats-v-news-and-discussion/985-little-blog-ats-purchase-ownership-experience-9.html#post2911

Well, as most of you know I am not satisfied with my cars for very long….this does not apply to the 2016 Z06 which I love and it's going nowhere. On the other hand, I thought that I wanted an open hot rod and Mary Sue and I had discussed this over the years and after her passing I went ahead and bought a ’32 Ford

Roadster hot rod. After getting it all sorted out I recently had the chance for Terry and I to drive to Santa Barbara….hated it. So, it’s going on consignment and I purchased the ’40 Ford shown here. This car was built 15 years ago and has won numerous awards in Northern California as well as being shown in numerous magazines. I got a deal I just couldn’t pass up so it will be here in a few weeks when I return from my annual driving trip to the Midwest and beyond. If anyone wants a REAL deal on a ’32 Roadster let me know. It is show quality.
