2016 Tree Sale Feedback

The Good

We found everything we wanted and then some!

The Master Gardener’s were very helpful and knowledgeable

We haven’t missed a sale yet – we’ll be back next year.

See you at the Plant Sale April 2

The Bad

The people who were in line at 6:30 were upset when the other entrance was opened

Many complained that the layout was confusing with berries being in two different places

Oranges were in two places also

The setup was harder to navigate than last year

Are there any shorter jujubes?

The people wanted bananas, more Thornless Mexican Limes, Republic of Texas Oranges, Asian

Pears, Ruby Red Grapefruits and Peaches

The Ugly

Because wagons were left unattended while customers went to their cars, some purchases

disappeared from their wagons. We need some people to watch wagons awaiting pickup.

The ID on the wagons was difficult to see and interpret because of their similarity – for example

A12 and 12.

We need bigger and better signage.

Price changes were confusing.

Additional Feedback from BCMGA Members

1. We could have used more handouts at both doors. Handing out information would be a

good job for interns. It would have been helpful if we had passed out the material to the

people waiting in line for the sale to start so they could check the map and available

plants.

2. We need to make the aisles wide enough for two wagons to pass each other. A few

volunteers did move the plants back closer to the wall the increase the aisle space.

3. We need more formal checkout lines – people were really confused about where to get

in line for check. Possible we could have signs to identify checkout lines.

4. I heard complaints that the plant placement did not match what was in the handout.

Oranges and blackberries in two different locations instead of one.

5. There were a number of mistakes made in totaling up the check out tickets. Receipts

were not filled out correctly, and were not totaled up correctly. We need to do some

more training on this before the sale next year.

6. Volunteers could use some training on many of the roles.

7. The wagons need to be numbered on the front and the back. We used white duct tape

with black lettering on the wagons from Galveston and they could be easily seen.

8. During the first two hours of the sale at least 20 -30 people are needed to man wagons

and deliver to vehicles.

9. The drive through at the fairground does not work very well due to people coming out

the door constantly while vehicles wait to be loaded.

10. One item was the ribbon color needs to be more distinct. Green and Yellow under

fluorescent lighting look the same.

11. To assist customers to get through the lines, every single person working on the lines

needs to help write tickets until the morning rush is over.

12. Lots of confusion on what master gardeners/interns would be charged at the end of the

sale. Not all responsible persons who collected money were informed on the appropriate

discount.

13. I was at Tractor Supply this morning and a friend who attended the sale told me she

was disappointed with the way the customers were let in to shop. She said she got there

at 7 am and when the sale opened the doors at the exit were also opened and

customer who just arrived got to get in before many of the others who had arrived early

and waited patiently to get in.

14. Everything went well in my department, but I had one man who said he was in early but

could not find the oranges. I took him to the oranges but there was no master gardener

working there. He bought a Cara Cara, but actually wanted an N33 Navel.

15. I heard that several stone fruit were bare rooted, just in pots with loose soil.

16. Most plants seemed small compared to past years. My Tropical Snow was the size of a

pencil and 27” from the graft. It has not started growing yet.

17. I think Carole did a great job.

Page 20: 2016 BCMGA Tree Sale Documentation Table of Contents 2016 ... · 2016 Flyer with Pricing 4 2016 Final Tree Sale Order 7 Sales Receipt from Brazos Citrus 9 2016 Layout of Sales Floor

18. We should never have a speaker at the final regular meeting before the sale. There

seems to be a lot of items that need to be covered and/or finalized at that meeting.

19. Set-up: There should be only one leader and his team handling the placement of plants

as they are brought into the building for sale.

20. Regular members rather than interns should be used as checkers. I am not sure some

checkers realize the importance of listing the correct price in the correct place on the

pay slip.

21. Interns could be wagon haulers and work on the customer pick-up team. There is never

enough help in that area.

22. All wagons should have the number on the front and back of the wagon for easier

location at pick-up. Wagons should only have numbers, no letters. Letters only create

confusion. I am hereby volunteering to help renumber the wagons.

23. Customers should NEVER be allowed in the pick-up area. I really think we need to come

up with a way to keep that area roped off.

24. I would like to see customers line up at the double doors at the west end to the building

and those double doors should be used as the ONLY entrance. This would eliminate

customers walking through the pick-up area and wanting to enter through the checking

area.

25. Remind members that no plants may be “set aside” for member purchase.

26. The print on the laminated plant signs was too small. Next year make signs with letter

large enough to read from at least 3 feet away.

27. The people in line at 6:30 were upset when the other entrance was opened.

28. Having the same fruits, while they may have been of different varieties in different

locations (for example oranges).

29. I was helping load and the situation where the loaded wagons were being held was a

ZOO.

30. And the “duplicate numbers” were a problem. I know we borrowed wagons from

Galveston which lead to the 12 and A12 situation. If the numbers can be larger and

more visible it would help.

31. Print the plant name in larger letters on the plant signs.
