2016 ANNUAL REPORTCelebrating 15 Years of Funding Abortion
2 • Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equity 2016 Annual Report
FROM THE PRESIDENTDear friends,
We’re still beaming from the generosity and love you showed during our Fifteenth Anniversary celebrations in 2016. We held successful anniversary events in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, and we were so honored to celebrate with all of our supporters. The art on the cover of this annual report is a custom painting by local artist Gerardo Arellano in commemoration of our fifteenth year.
2016 was a historic year for reproductive rights in Texas. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down two provisions of House Bill 2, the Texas abortion clinic shutdown law, in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. This decision set a precedent across the country by declaring ambulatory surgery center standards and admitting privileges requirements as unlawful and undue burdens on people seeking abortion care.
While we honor and celebrate our victories, we are also facing the harsher world created by last year’s election. Trump’s victory speaks volumes to the systematic racism, bigotry, xenophobia, sexism, and violence accepted by voters—primarily white voters—in our country. We are left with an anti-choice president, governor, and lieutenant governor, as well as anti-choice majorities in Congress and the Texas Legislature.
Our hearts break for communities of color, LGBTQ people, undocumented people, immigrants, people with disabilities, young people, low-income people, survivors of sexual assault, people who are seeking or who have had abortions, and everyone whose existence and well-being is threatened by ongoing attacks made by our bodies of government.
In response, Lilith Fund is focused on resistance. Resistance means caring for one another when governments abandon our communities. We’ve resolved to resist hateful rhetoric and anti-choice attacks, to work in radical collaboration with our communities, to draw strength from one another, and to build greater compassion for our callers, our abortion providers, and our supporters who partner with us to make abortion access a reality. For us, funding abortion is a powerful form of resistance.
Last year, we provided funding to 1,341 clients and offered vouchers totaling $267,742. We also marked the historic milestone of serving more than 10,000 clients since our founding in 2001. Thanks to your support and partnership, Lilith Fund made an incredible impact in Texas during the last fifteen years.
In 2016, we hired our first full-time staff person—our executive director Amanda Williams. Amanda has grown Lilith Fund’s impact exponentially in just one year. She has expanded our donor engagement efforts and cultivated new supporters, strengthened our infrastructure so that we can better serve our clients, and deepened our movement-building work across the state. Amanda has lifted up the challenges of abortion access in Texas and elevated Lilith Fund’s profile across the nation by speaking at conferences, publishing opinion pieces, and being interviewed by countless news outlets.
Our growth has also led to radical and inspiring collaboration. Lilith Fund is consistently taking action in our community by showing up for movements across social justice spaces. In the face of division and hate, we are gathering with allies and supporters like you to show that our commitment to justice is strong and unyielding.
We are honored to fund abortion and build power with your partnership in this time of resistance. Thank you for supporting Lilith Fund. We look forward to building this movement with you in the years to come.
With love,
Neesha Davé President, Lilith Fund
