In October 2016, Dr. Randy Guzman – a brilliant vascular surgeon at St. Boniface Hospital – appeared on The Health Report, the Foundation’s weekly radio show on 680 CJOB. Among other topics, Dr. Guzman spoke about his dream of seeing the Hospital’s plan to open a state-of-the-art Endovascular Hybrid Operating Room (OR).

A Hybrid OR is equipped with advanced imaging technology, which allows surgeons like Dr. Guzman to perform minimally invasive surgery. The space also functions as a conventional operating room, allowing surgeons to make quick, safe transitions to open surgery when necessary.

The imaging equipment is wheeled out of the way and surgery can proceed quickly. The patient does not have to be transferred to another room, thereby reducing the risk of infection. It is important technology that will improve patient outcomes and attract leading surgeons, Dr. Guzman explained on the air.

The total price tag for a Hybrid OR is about $6.5 million. Vital technology doesn’t come cheap.

Back at the Foundation office the next day, the phone rang. The gentleman on the other end of the line said he had listened to the program and wanted to donate to the Hybrid OR campaign to thank Dr. Guzman for performing his successful surgery. His gift – a generous $1 million.

Another former patient called us in 2016 to tell his story. He went to the emergency room after experiencing chest pain. All of the usual tests showed that nothing was wrong, but the ER doctor decided to dig deeper, which led to the discovery of a complex, but treatable, heart problem. The Hospital’s cardiac team took over and ultimately saved the patient’s life. To express his gratitude, he contributed $100,000 to the Foundation and asked that his gift support the Emergency Department and the Cardiac Sciences Program in equal measure.

Toward the end of 2016, we received a letter from the adult children of a woman who had just passed away after spending time in the Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. They were moved by, and grateful for, the care she received. To fulfill their mother’s wish, they donated $5,000 in support of medical research.

We were showered with such stories throughout 2016. Grateful patients and their families stepped forward with donations of all sizes; with offers of volunteerism; with heartfelt words of thanks; and with the most sincere smiles you can imagine.

For the Board and staff of St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, these expressions of gratitude energize us – and we too, are grateful. We are grateful for donors and sponsors like you who turn dreams into reality. We are grateful for the commitment to excellence that drives our colleagues at St. Boniface Hospital. We are grateful for the world-leading research being conducted at St. Boniface Hospital’s Albrechtsen Research Centre, and for the doctors on the cover of this report who led the way with some very big dreams.

On behalf of our Board, I would also like to express my gratitude for the exceptional partnership and leadership of Charles (Chuck) LaFlèche. Chuck served as our President and CEO beginning in 2010, and stepped down to pursue a new opportunity in March of 2017. In his seven years with us, Chuck raised the profile of the Foundation, and raised the bar for us as research and health-care champions. We will miss Chuck's energy, skill, and style - we wish him continued success in his future endeavours.
