Loaves & FishesThe Power of Dignity2016 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your partnership and support over these many years of growth for Loaves & Fishes. Since the 2011 move to our new facility at 1871 High Grove Lane, there have been a number of new opportunities for Loaves & Fishes and our clients. Through your support, we have been able to increase both the quantity and quality of the food we provide, and in a significant strategic change, expanded our services to programs beyond food in order to help families toward overall self-sufficiency. To reflect the advancement of our organization, we changed our name from Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry to Loaves & Fishes Community Services.
Our food operations and nutrition education has grown tremendously as a result of 1) a substantial increase in our food rescue capability; 2) a new market place/client shopping area; 3) a new cooler and refrigerated truck; and 4) an addition of stronger programs for at-risk populations such as young children, seniors and veterans. We provided over 3.6 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2016, up from 2.25 million pounds in fiscal year 2011. In addition, a much higher amount of the food we provide is healthier food such as fresh produce, milk, eggs and products that are lower in fat, sodium and sugar.
As we developed a better understanding of the needs and barriers of the low income families in our community, our organization has evolved beyond food programs. Economic hardship is a complex problem, often the result of many barriers and circumstances bearing down on a family. We provide programs in-house, and significantly, we also collaborate with other service agencies to deliver comprehensive social services to the many families in need in our community. In 2016, Loaves & Fishes led a merger with Naperville CARES, which greatly enhanced our team, allowing us to provide additional programs, improve upon our existing programs and better serve our clients and community.
The foundation built over the years has positioned us to move forward with stronger purpose and greater impact. As exemplified with the recent adoption of our new Strategic Plan, we will provide greater access to more nutritious food, and through our other programs, we will lead more families to self-sufficiency. Simply said, our vision is to end hunger and transform lives.
We are stronger as a community when we help each other. We invite you to discover what we do and share in the vision for our future. It takes the efforts of an entire community to solve the issues that many families are experiencing, so we hope you will join us in this next phase of our journey to end hunger and transform lives.
Thank you again for all of your support,
Sincerely,
Michael J. Havala Paul NovotnyPresident and CEO Chair, Board of Directors
