BOARD CHAIR’S MESSAGE
Build – Promote - Enhance
Your sustained support has allowed us to continue our work with our
many partners to build, promote, and enhance the programs of the U.S.
Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC). Our success is a
product of your support and on behalf of the Board of Directors of the
Army Heritage Center Foundation and the Foundation staff; I want to
express our appreciation for your sustained support that allows us to
continue to enhance “Telling the Army Story . . . One Soldier at a
time.®”
2016 was a great year for our partnership with the U.S. Army, our many
donors, and supporters who wish to honor our Soldiers and their
Families! As I reported last year, we broke ground on a $2.25 million
expansion of the Visitor and Education Center in November 2015. I am proud to report that the
Army took possession of this new addition – The Hall of the American Soldier – on September
16, 2016. This expansion provides USAHEC an additional gallery and improved facilities to
support special programs, Veterans’ reunions, and other educational activities. This new facility
is already in use and in 2017, the first exhibit for the new gallery has opened – Good-Bye
Broadway, Hello France – a tribute to our Soldiers who answered the call during World War
One.
As our major construction program ended, support from some of our regional supporters allowed
us to convert the former lobby of Ridgway Hall, an under-used space, into a new gallery. You
would be proud to know that this new space will highlight the environment that our Soldiers in
Afghanistan and Iraq have operated in. Next door, in the Omar N. Bradley Art Gallery, the
Foundation sponsored the exhibit Sleepless Nights: The Midnight Drawings of John A. Cook.
John Cook, a sergeant assigned to the 5th
Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, fought in
Korea from July 1950 to June 1951. After the war, he became a professor of the visual arts and
ended his teaching career at Penn State University. He suffered PTSD for much of his life, and
when he could not sleep, he drew vivid portrayals of his service in Korea as a testament to his
comrades and fallen friends. The Foundation was proud to have sponsored this exhibit and
supported the USAHEC staff with a full time intern who helped catalog the collection and
prepare the more than 60 sketches for exhibit.
The Foundation also continued its efforts to promote USAHEC by improving the public’s
knowledge of campus resources and working to build visitation. As we have in the past, the
Foundation continued to promote USAHEC in print and electronic media, as both an educational
resource and a tourist destination. The Foundation purchased advertisements in regional tourism
publications and assisted USAHEC staff gain regional news coverage of programs and events.
In addition, the Foundation continued to expand our electronic footprint on Facebook and
Twitter especially for USAHEC’s 2016 Army Heritage Days weekend. We can use your help
and ask you to also promote visitation to the Center and use of its resources.
4
With changes to Army regulations, the Foundation assumed a greater role to enhance the
USAHEC collections. We facilitated improvements in the library, archival, and artifact
holdings by coordinating the donation of more than 100 collections during the year. While most
consisted of library and manuscript collections, we were able to secure an outstanding photo
collection from the family of Mathew Batson, a Medal of Honor Awardee, who served in the
Philippines. Batson is credited with the creation of the Maccabee Scouts, the forerunner of the
Philippine Scouts who loyally served with our Soldiers throughout WWI and WWII. As
important, Jeff Hawks, our Education Program Director, undertook an effort with a regional
paper to secure the oral history interviews of 31 Vietnam Veterans that were subsequently
transferred into the holdings of USAHEC.
The Education Department also continued to refine their programs to enhance support of teacher
and student education. Their efforts remain critical, for we need our citizens to appreciate past
challenges and successes of our Nation, its Soldiers, and their Families. They continued
management of the State-wide National History Day in PA program and with a second year of
support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, sustained the effort to grow the National
History Day program in an underserved region of the state.
We need your continued support to expand a campus dedicated to honoring our Soldiers,
preserving their memories, and educating the Army and the public of our Nation’s history and
the Soldiers’ and Army’s role in shaping that history. Please be as generous as you can, please
serve as an advocate for USAHEC, and please visit this National resource that you have helped
create.

This expansion will support the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center’s need for
additional exhibit, educational program, and conferencing space.

2016 DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Thank you for your support! During 2016, you provided over $430,000 in donations,
memberships, and special project funds. This enabled us to continue to Build, Promote, and
Enhance the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. Your support allowed us to facilitate
construction of the 7,500 square foot expansion and manage the $2 million Redevelopment
Assistance Construction Program (RACP) grant awarded by the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania in 2014. Please see the listing of our 2016 donors in this report.
Membership soared this year, thanks to our partnership with Members 1st Federal Credit
Union, which resulted in more than 9,000 new Recruit-level members this year! Membership at
the Minuteman through Doughboy levels remained steady and we welcomed two new GI
(Lifetime) members. This report also includes a listing of our members as of December 31,
2016, less the Recruit level.
Visitor and Education Center
With construction of the Hall of the American
Soldier complete, the recent expansion is most
apparent inside the building with the addition of
an exhibit gallery, divisible multi-purpose room,
expanded café seating. This 7,500 square foot
expansion was made possible through a $2
million RACP grant from the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania and additional funding from
Tawani Foundation, The Donald B. and
Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation, the G.B.
Stuart Charitable Foundation, and the Land
O’Lakes Foundation as well as your support
which allowed us to manage this project.
USAHEC staff installed the exhibit “Good-Bye Broadway, Hello France”: America in the Era
of World War One in the new gallery, which opened April 6, 2017, on the centennial of the
United States’ entry into the war. The Hall of the American Soldier currently features large-

training events.
Sleepless Nights: The Midnight Drawings of Korean War Veteran John A. Cook
With funding from the Richard von Hess Foundation, the
Foundation sponsored the exhibit Sleepless Nights: The
Midnight Drawings of Korean War Veteran John A. Cook
which opened in June 2016. Cook (1929-2015) served in
Korea from September 1950 through June 1951 as an enlisted
Soldier with the 5th
Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.
During his service, his unit advanced to Pyongyang, the
North Korean capital. When the Chinese Army intervened in
the conflict, they were pushed back well south of the 38th
Parallel and suffered significant casualties. The memories of
his lost comrades haunted Cook the rest of his life.
Throughout his life, as a way of dealing with his memories
when he could not sleep, he sketched images of his combat
experiences. Cook went on to a successful career as an artist,
specializing in sculpting medallions, and teaching sculpture at
Penn State.
Forty-three of Cook’s sketches were included in the exhibit
which was curated by USAHEC art curator Jim McNally and
intern Allie Stabile. The Foundation published an exhibit guide which is available for sale in the
USAHEC museum store. The Cook estate recently gave the Foundation a collection of more
than 100 additional sketches along with other materials.
Ridgway Lobby Renovation
The Foundation was able to maximize the expansion construction by concurrently renovating the
Ridgway Hall lobby, which served as USAHEC’s main entrance until the opening of the Visitor
and Education Center in 2011, so that the space could be repurposed. With funding from The
Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation, The Josiah W. and Bessie H. Kline
Foundation, Inc., and the G.B. Stuart Charitable Foundation, the construction crew removed
the security desk and decorative features to open up the space. USAHEC staff installed the
exhibit On Patrol which recognizes Soldiers’ service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2016 EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
The Foundation initiated our newest program,
the Veterans’ Cafe, on March 19, 2016 at
USAHEC, with an event marking the 25th
anniversary of operation Desert Storm. On
June 6, at Hoffman Funeral Home in Carlisle,
we marked the anniversary of D-Day with a
breakfast and presentation from Mr. Henry
Ferri, who went ashore on Omaha Beach in the
early hours of the Normandy Invasion. We
rounded out the year with two additional events,
one at Cumberland Crossings in Carlisle, and
one at Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg.
Our featured Veterans included COL (R) Rude
DeFrance, COL (R) Don Bletz, Mr. Joe
Boslet, and Mr. Norman Fuggitt. As the year
wound to a close, Humana came on board as a Founding Sponsor, joining our other founding

sponsor, Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory. We look forward to continuing the program
with a full slate of events in 2017. Foundation members who would like to be included on the
email list for event information, or who are interested in sharing their stories as featured Veterans
for an event, should contact the Education Department.
In a series of related efforts, the Department had significant success with our efforts to collect
and preserve oral histories. Students in the Veterans’ Oral History Program continue to make
progress recording and preparing interviews for posterity. Education Director Jeff Hawks also
concluded the last of 26 in-depth interviews with Vietnam Veterans as part of a joint effort with
Carlisle’s newspaper, The Sentinel to record, preserve, and honor the stories of Vietnam Veterans
from the local area.
The campers attending the Soldier Experience Living History
Adventure Camp displayed remarkable fortitude, enduring a
summer of record heat and humidity. Despite the 90+ degree
days, the campers soldiered on, learning about the history of the
Army, the tactical and strategic challenges of the Cold War, and
the training Soldiers endured as they prepared to meet the Soviet
threat. New drills and activities this year included maneuvering
against a sniper and water wars, as well as such perennial
favorites as trench clearing and force-on-force exercises like
“capture the chicken”.
Other onsite programs included holding workshops, including a
program for teachers on World War I in January and a November
training session conducted by National World War II Fellow
Steff Chortanoff, who works as a gifted support teacher in Lower
Dauphin School District. The staff also conducted a well-
received leadership training program for Deloitte using
material from FM 22-100 and the story of Medal of Honor recipient SFC Sammy Davis.
The Foundation continued our tradition of hosting film screenings with two special events. The
first was a screening of the Oscar-nominated Danish film, A War, the story of a Danish
commander accused of causing civilian deaths as a result of an airstrike he authorized, allegedly
without proper identification of his target. The film dramatizes the challenges Soldiers face on
the modern battlefield, as well as the contributions of our allies to the Global War on Terror.
The second event was a panel discussion following a screening of the documentary film Thank
You for Your Service. The film explores the mental health challenges that arise from military
service from the perspective of both the Soldiers who are suffering and the institutions working
to provide them with the treatment and services they need.
Thanks to a grant from the Carlisle Barracks Spouses’ Club, we were able to bring elements of
the Medal of Honor Society’s Character Education program to the students at Lamberton
Middle School in Carlisle. This program uses stories of valor from Army history to engage
students in activities that foster discussion of the nature and importance of character.
Jeff Hawks continued regular appearances on the local noontime program “Good Day PA” on
Harrisburg’s ABC 27, highlighting the military heritage of South Central PA through the stories

of local Soldiers. He also appeared on a segment of Comcast Newsmakers discussing the
National History Day in Pennsylvania (NHD in PA) program.
The 2016 NHD in PA program concluded with the
successful reinvigoration of the long-dormant NHD in
PA Region 5 in central Pennsylvania. Under the
Foundation’s leadership, the Central Intermediate
Unit #10 formed a partnership with Lock Haven
University to manage the region. More than 60
students from 12 schools attended the Region 5
Contest in February, managed by the Foundation.
Plans are well underway to transfer full control of the
region to the partnership in 2017 and beyond.
More than 1,200 students, teachers, parents, and
volunteers converged on Millersville University for
the NHD in PA State Contest with 58 students
selected to represent Pennsylvania at the National
Contest. Pennsylvania had another outstanding year as four projects received awards at the
National Contest, including a 3rd Place finish, two Outstanding Entry awards, and the Equality
in History Prize for the Junior Division.
Students in our Internship Program provided outstanding support for our programs. Justin
Wilkins from Penn State Harrisburg provided support for NHD in PA as an Accounting Intern,
helping process payments and maintaining records. Nicholas Borgaonkar, a Penn State student,
exploring options for a military career, provided support by digitizing photographs for
Foundation efforts. Michael Hickey returned for another stint as Counselor-in-Training for the
summer programs and has committed to a final year in the position for 2017 before leaving for
college. Cumberland Valley High School student Vishnu Viswanathan also interned with the
department over the summer, undertaking an independent study into gas warfare in World War I.
Jacob Compton, a home-schooled student from a family stationed to Carlisle Barracks, spent a
semester researching riverine operations in Vietnam, a project that culminated with an oral
history with Jacob’s grandfather, who himself served in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
In addition to enhancing their course of studies, our interns work on projects that support updates
to the Soldier Stories on our website. 2016 saw the addition of four new stories to the website.
They are:
Lieutenant Colonel Terry Walters, brigade surgeon, Operation Restore Hope, Somalia,
1992 and 1993. Her story includes a first person account of the aftermath of the attack on
a Pakistani armored column on June 5, 1993; part of the ramp-up to the Battle of
Mogadishu in October of 1993.
Colonel Benjamin Purcell. A Korean and Vietnam War veteran, Colonel Purcell spent
five years as a prisoner of war of the North Vietnamese after his helicopter was shot
down in February of 1968. Stationed at Carlisle Barracks after his release, COL Purcell
delivered a Veterans Day address to the students at Carlisle High School in 1973, the text
of which is included in his story.
In March, the NHD in PA winners from 2015
gathered for the opening of the NHD in PA
Student Showcase at the State Museum of
Pennsylvania.

Sergeant Joe Boslet. Joe was a counter-intelligence specialist who served with MACV,
Advisory Team 67, in Phuc Long. Joe now volunteers at USAHEC as a docent.
Colonel (Ret.) Walter “Joe” Marm. COL Marm received the Medal of Honor for his
actions on the first day of the Battle of Ia Drang, for single handedly taking out a machine
gun entrenched behind a termite mound that had pinned down his platoon as they tried to
advance to relieve a platoon that had become encircled by the enemy.
These Soldier Stories provide first-hand accounts from the garrisons, guard posts, and
battlefields where American’s sons and daughters carry on the United States Army’s tradition of
service and sacrifice. Although these stories represent only a portion of our overall activity, they
serve as a reminder of the importance of our task of enhancing the capacity of the U.S. Army
Heritage and Education Center to honor their service, preserve their history, and education the
Army and the public about their contributions to our nation’s history.
