MISSION STATEMENTIt is the mission of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School to educate the boys and girls of Gunter Mountain. We believe the privilege of a sound education is a heritage which should be enjoyed by all the citizens of our country. We believe all our children should be afforded such advantages as shall develop in them the largest capacities for performing the duties of American citizenship and to enlighten them in the knowledge and practice of pure and noble citizenship. We further believe the school environment should be disciplined with emphasis on positive attitudes and academic excellence which will nurture in our students the desire to cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty. With high expectations, purposes and standards, the KDS DAR School accepts the missions to educate the youth of Gunter Mountain.

Chairman’s MessageIt was an honor to be elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in October 2016. I am the 14th person to serve in this position in the school’s 93 year history, and I look forward to working with each and every KDS friend and supporter as we approach our second century of serving children.

We were delighted to welcome the NSDAR National School Tour to campus during Dedication Day. It is always great to host the President General, the National Officers and many DAR members from across the country who love and support our school. The students are always excited to see the ladies, and they are grateful to have the opportunity to thank them for their continued kindness and generosity.

In November, KDS hosted its annual Veterans Program. Filled with patriotic music and stirring messages in honor of our nation’s veterans, this program was a wonderful tribute to the men and women who have given so much in defense of our country. A delicious brunch was hosted by the Family and Consumer Science Department for all the guests. It is so inspiring to see our students honor those who have selflessly served our country.

It was a special treat to hear the 4th Grade and High School Choirs perform at the annual Christmas Organ Concert in Nan Roberts Lane Chapel. Along with Sue Ellen Adams, talented organist and DAR member, the choirs did an outstanding job and put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank you for your support. Without each of you and your help, we would not be able to accomplish the important task of providing a patriotic education for the students at KDS. We look forward to having you visit our campus and interact with the students. You are always welcome here!

Once again, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the Board of Trustees, students, staff, and friends in the coming months and years. I look forward to serving as your Chairman and working with each of you as we strive to meet the needs of the students at KDS.

There are so many things I love about my job as Executive Director of Kate Duncan Smith DAR School. As we work to put together this annual report and share with the school’s friends the accomplishments of the past year, I’d like to share a few of them.

I love working with people who are passionate about serving children and who give their all day in and day out. From the dedicated faculty and staff members who are on the “front lines” in the classrooms and on the campus to the members of the Board of Trustees who support our school’s mission from places both near and far, it takes many hands to do the work of KDS.

I love seeing children grow and develop in a challenging academic environment. Our students have opportunities I would have never dreamed of when I was enrolled at KDS. Advanced Placement classes, online learning, dual enrollment college courses, Career Technical Center offerings, and traditional on-campus classes make it easy for every student to customize a curriculum suited to his or her own skills and abilities and to learn at his or her own pace.

I love working for my alma mater and being a small part of this 93-year legacy of patriotic education on Gunter Mountain. KDS is so much more than the buildings that make up the campus, but it’s within those buildings that countless memories were made and continue to be shared. Generations who have had the privilege to attend this school carry on this legacy through memories and shared experiences, and they pass on their knowledge to those who follow. Times may change, but that feeling you get by being a graduate of KDS DAR School stays the same year after year.

And I love working with the DAR and other donors and stakeholders to ensure the children are able to thrive not only academically and socially, but also with patriotism, citizenship, and a reverence for our country’s founders, groundbreakers, and innovators. One of my greatest joys is in the friendships I have formed over the years with the numerous supporters of KDS and its students. You bring hope where often, there is none, and for that I am grateful.

We are all joined in the common goal of investing in the future by investing in children, and I thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to do what I love.

Executive Director’s Message

KDS Executive Director Heather W. Green and dear friend Sara Craft

KDS Friends Play “Musical Chairs”On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, KDS participated in Giving Tuesday, a global day of

giving aimed at inspiring people to collaborate in improving their local communities and give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

The Giving Tuesday goal for KDS was to raise $10,000 to purchase 100 chairs for the high school band and choir classrooms. The new chairs will be used regularly by more than 700 students in grades 5-12 – one half of the KDS student body – and will replace a rag-tag collection of folding chairs that are no longer reliable.

And thanks to the more than 90 friends who answered the call during the Giving Tuesday “Musical Chairs” campaign, the goal was met, and 100 new chairs have been purchased for the KDS Music Education Department.

If you missed the opportunity to help with this terrific project, do not worry, we have lots of other ‘seats’ to fill! With more than 1,300 students on campus, there are always projects and programs in need of sponsorship. Visit www.kdsdar.org to see how you can make a difference in the lives of the students at KDS!

The complete renovation of the KDS baseball and softball fields began in June of 2015. Addressing critical drainage issues, both around and on the fields, was the top priority for this project. Outside of the fields, tons of sand rock and dirt were removed, making way for more than 700 feet of underground pipe and drain basins designed to carry the water around the fields, parking and seating areas. Strip drains were installed in the outfields, and grade work was done to correct low spots in the infields. Additional drains behind home plate insure standing water following a heavy rain will be at a minimum.

Large poles to suspend the backstop netting were added, and the electrical wiring for the light poles and dugouts was installed underground. A new infield light pole was added on the softball Field. New dugouts and fixed seating installations were constructed for both fields, new fencing was erected, and new concrete patio areas were added. Volunteers in the community made helmet and bat cubbies and the Agri-Science Department constructed benches. The parking lots at the baseball and softball Fields were paved by our Marshall County Commissioner for District 2, RE Martin.

During 2016 Dedication Day festivities, a dedication ceremony was held for the newly renovated fields. On hand for the celebration was a large crowd of DAR members, as well as alumni and members of the community including NSDAR President General Ann Dillon and Alabama State Senator Clay Scofield, who both spoke about the impact of the project.

The project’s major donors were recognized during the program, and the permanent donor walls for each field were unveiled. For the Baseball Field, the “Grand Slam” donor was the Louisa St. Clair Chapter, NSDAR, Peggy King Scully, Regent. “Home Run” level sponsors were DAR of Michigan, Diane Schrift, Regent; Illinois Organization DAR, Sharon Frizzell, Regent; Texas Society, DAR, Judy Ostler, Regent; and the National Junior Membership Committee, NSDAR, Cecile Wimberley, Chair.

Because of the legacy of support and the continued combined efforts of the DAR of Michigan, the Louisa St. Clair Chapter, and many other Michigan Chapters and individuals, the baseball field at KDS was officially named Michigan Field.

For the softball field, the “Grand Slam” donor was the Florida State Society, DAR, Ginger Poffenberger, Regent. Numerous Florida Daughters, Chapters, and organizations

HIT A HOMERUN FOR KDS

“The work done at our schools is priceless, and it is wonderful to have an impact on the lives of student athletes for today and into the future. The renovation of the softball field, and having it named the Florida Field, is a lasting tribute to our State Society. We will always be a presence at KDS.”

contributed to the success of the fundraising efforts. The “Home Run” level sponsor was the National Junior Membership Committee, NSDAR, Cecile Wimberley, Chair.

Because of the tremendous commitment of the Florida Society DAR and numerous other Florida Chapters and individuals, the softball field at KDS has been officially named Florida Field.

This project was a collaborative effort between the DAR, the community, alumni, and friends. The extensive renovations not only improved the KDS school ball fields, but also energized the entire community, becoming a source of pride for the citizens of Grant and Gunter Mountain. The positive effects of this project will be felt for years to come. Thank you to all who “stepped up to the plate” for the Patriots!

“Inspired by the legacy of earlier chapter Daughters who helped create the original KDS recreation space, Louisa St. Clair Chapter did not hesitate to support the baseball field renovation project. Members understand that life skills learned through organized sports can complement academics, and we wanted to be a part of providing an exceptional venue for KDS students and the Gunter Mountain community.”

During the months of April and May, KDS students, teachers and staff members

were encouraged to write a card or letter to military personnel that would be delivered

to NSDAR headquarters to aide in the attempt to set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for

most letters to active service personnel at one time. KDS Director of Development Beth

Cagle coordinated the efforts by collecting the names and addresses of local military

personnel to provide to everyone so that they could choose one person to write to. She

then collected the letters written to be delivered to Washington, DC, to be added to the

thousands written by DAR members from across the country.

On June 19th, during the National Defense Night Ceremony at Continental Congress,

we learned that DAR now holds the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title for “most letters

to military personnel collected in one month” with a total number of 100,904 cards and

letters!

Congratulations to all KDS students, faculty, and staff who contributed to the record!

During the Gift Acceptance Ceremony at the 2016 Continental Congress, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School donated to NSDAR an original oil painting by Anne Rogers Minor, the National Society’s 11th President General. Mrs. Minor served in that position from 1920 to 1923. Her father-in-law, a well-known artist, encouraged her to take up painting as a career. Her paintings were on exhibition in many galleries in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. She was a member of several societies of artists, and regarded painting as her profession.

The artwork, an original oil painting of a harbor scene, hung in the Minor Practice Cottage on the KDS campus from the time of its dedication in 1935 until 2007 when the Home Economics teacher moved off campus. Since that time, the painting has been housed in the KDS Administrative Office.

The Minor Practice Cottage was built in 1935 with funds contributed by the Connecticut DAR and was named in honor of Mrs. Minor, a Connecticut Daughter. It served as the residence of the school’s home economics teacher and as a practice cottage for home economics students. The girls in the class would take turns staying in the home and practicing skills learned in the classroom such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. When boys began taking home economics classes in the early 1980s, the cottage was no longer used for practice. Today it is used as a faculty residence.

The painting now hangs in the Connecticut Board Room at NSDAR with other works of Mrs. Minor’s art.

Beautiful fall weather welcomed visitors from across the country to the KDS DAR School’s 92nd Dedication Day celebration on Monday, October 10th and Tuesday, October 11th. This year’s festivities were even more special as the NSDAR National School Tour was present on campus. President General Ann Dillon, National School Chairman Peggy Troxell, members of the NSDAR Executive Board, groups from Illinois and Texas, and numerous others travelling by car were on hand to share in this special occasion. All total, more than 350 DAR guests were present at KDS on Monday and Tuesday.

Awaiting the DAR guests as they arrived on Monday morning was a warm “welcome to campus” where

students lined the sidewalks, waved signs, and presented them with flowers and artwork while the KDS Marching Band and cheerleaders provided lively tunes and cheers. Entertainment during lunch was provided by the 6th Grade J.A.C. Club, performing a program in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service.

The afternoon consisted of a dedication ceremony for the newly renovated KDS Baseball and Softball Fields, campus tours, classroom visits, and meetings. Members of the National School Tour participated in an afternoon Community Service Scavenger Hunt on campus in honor of DAR’s National Day of Service. The ladies each brought a book about an influential person from their state to donate to one of the school libraries. They also planted seeds for students to grow in the Greenhouse, signed cards of appreciation for veterans, and raised awareness about breast cancer.

On Monday evening the group traveled off the mountain for a “Casual Evening at the Cave”. Cathedral Caverns State Park served as a lovely backdrop for a southern meal under the stars, complete with chicken-n-dumplings and fried apple pies. Dulcimer music and cave tours added to the fun and fellowship.

The traditional Dedication Program on Tuesday is always the highlight of the festivities, and this year was no exception with 23 state societies, groups, and organizations qualifying to dedicate. President General Ann Dillon presented the Dedication Day message, which featured her heartfelt words about the state of things in our country and why a place like KDS is so important. The program also featured musical performances by the Fourth Grade Choir and the High School Choir and all KDS students singing “DAR, Oh How We Love You” to a rousing response. There was even a surprise visit by the adorable KDS kindergartners who “sailed” through the program aboard the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria in honor of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World. The program was followed by the famous Basket Luncheon, a perennial favorite of the DAR ladies and guests.

Among the other highlights of this year’s KDS Dedication Day was the annual Craft Show which was held in the Doris Pike White Gymnasium, with more than 35 crafters offering their handmade goods. The proceeds from the Craft Show provide funds for supplies and materials for the KDS High School Art Department.

The 92nd KDS DAR School Dedication Day was a truly special time for our “Gem of Gunter Mountain” and its students.

As a retired nuclear engineer, Alabama State Regent Nancy Folk understands the importance of science class as a catalyst for encouraging students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. Her new project for KDS Middle School students will do just that.

Funds raised through Mrs. Folk’s State Regent’s Project are allowing KDS to partner with Mind Gear Labs, a private organization with a proven record in delivering science programming to schools across North Alabama. This partnership is providing every student in Middle School, grades 5-7, with a nine week introduction to LEGO Robotics.

Of the new program, Middle School Counselor Lisa Fountain said, “Our students have loved the program. After each class, I can hear excitement just buzzing throughout the halls. The instructors interact well with the students and make learning the concepts fun.”

Students in the 8th grade were offered the class as an elective, and 4th-6th graders were offered an opportunity to enroll in an after-school class. More than 70 students are taking the after-school class, a response so positive, a second class was added.

Fountain commented, “I observed a game that one of the Mind Gear instructors created to help students understand the language of coding and robotics. It was amazing to see what they learned from that

KDS Pre-K Expands to Serve More ChildrenThe 2016 school year marked the beginning of a new chapter for the

Pre-K program at KDS. Not only did the program move into a newly renovated building, but another class was added, and now 36 students from the area are able to attend Pre-K!

The Alabama State Board of Education expanded the Pre-K program to more than 800 classrooms statewide in 2016, and KDS Elementary benefitted from grants to fund the added class. Studies analyzing student achievement through the 6th grade have found that students who participate in a high quality Pre-K program consistently outperform their peers in reading and math. Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education also reports that Alabama First Class Pre-K alums have higher attendance rates, are less likely to require special education placement, and are less likely to repeat a grade than children that did not participate in the program.

KDS is proud to work in partnership with the Marshall County Board of Education to make this program available to area children.

simple demonstration!” STEM careers are among those in

highest demand in Alabama, and they are also some of the highest paying jobs available. To better prepare students to enter the workforce in STEM careers, last year the Alabama Department of Education introduced a new course of study for science. The main goal of this new standard is to give all Alabama students a solid foundation in science and engineering. Hands-on, experiential learning is crucial to this curriculum as it challenges students to utilize critical thinking skills and work collaboratively to solve problems, just as they will have to when they join the work force. KDS Middle School’s partnership with Mind Gear Labs provides the hands-on learning required to meet the new State Curriculum Standards.

When asked about the impact the program is having on the students, Mrs. Fountain replied, “We love seeing our students strengthen self-confidence, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and persistence. Regardless of their future aspirations, these skills will be most valuable in any future classroom or workforce setting.”

Under the leadership of State Regent Nancy Folk, Alabama Daughters are making a real difference in the lives of KDS students.

Jim Page, a 1996 graduate of KDS DAR School, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, a Tuscaloosa-based business advocacy organization serving over 65,000 working men and women through more than 1,350 business enterprises, civic organizations and educational institutions. Being responsible for management of the professional staff and having oversight of all Chamber programs, Jim also serves as lead spokesman for the Chamber on all public policy issues, economic development projects and strategic community initiatives. Jim says, “There’s no question that KDS DAR School played a significant role in preparing me for the career I have today. Being involved in numerous clubs and organizations helped me develop leadership skills that I try to put into practice on a daily basis. Everything the Chamber is engaged in is for the purpose of making the community better. Helping others and working for the ‘greater good’ were values instilled in us as KDS students.” Prior to his tenure in Tuscaloosa, Jim served nine years as Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development for the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce in Decatur, Alabama. Preceding his time in Decatur, Jim was a consultant with the Montgomery-based lobbying firm of Fine, Geddie and Associates and worked on multiple statewide political campaigns. Jim serves on the Board of Directors of the Business Council of Alabama and the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, of which he is a past Chairman. He is Chairman of the University Communities Council for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, an appointed member of the Tuscaloosa County Road Improvement Commission and is Chairman of the Alliance for Alabama’s Infrastructure, a grassroots advocacy coalition that promotes financially-responsible investment in Alabama’s transportation infrastructure. A vocal proponent of early childhood education, Jim was appointed by Governor Robert Bentley to serve on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Partnership for Children and is a member of the Alabama School Readiness Alliance Pre-K Task Force. “I have the privilege of interacting with literally thousands of people throughout the year, so always getting to meet new people is definitely one of my favorite things about the job,” says Jim. “The broad scope of our work also gives me the opportunity to travel often, especially to Washington, D.C. – my favorite place. But, the greatest perk of my job is going to

Alumni Spotlight – Jim Pagebed at night knowing that the work my organization does is helping improve people’s lives.” Jim obtained his bachelor’s degree in political science and marketing from the University of North Alabama, and serving in leadership roles is something that has always come naturally to him. In addition to being selected Continental Congress representative and SGA President during his senior year of high school, Jim was also elected SGA President during his time at UNA. “My experiences at KDS instilled in me a deep sense of patriotism and genuine respect for public service. That has greatly influenced my career path and continues to inspire my passion to make this world a better place,” says Jim. “Beth Cagle was the teacher who had the most profound impact on my life – and the lives of so many others – because of her unwavering support, encouragement and constant reminders

that we could achieve more than we ever thought possible.” Jim has received a number of professional accolades during his career. In 2009, he was recognized nationally by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives as one of 40 Under 40: Rising Stars of the Chamber World. He also received the 2015 Jamie Wallace Award in recognition of “exceptional leadership, service and dedication to the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama”

and was recently named the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Thompson/Seymour Leadership Award by the Business Council of Alabama. Jim’s parents, Jimmy and Hilda Page, still live in Kennamer’s Cove, just outside of Grant, on the family farm. His great aunt, Louise Kennamer Romans, was one of two young women in KDS’s very first graduating class in 1931. He and his wife, Sara, are the proud parents of an eight-year-old daughter, Elly. In his spare time, Jim and his family enjoy watching University of Alabama football and basketball games and spending time on the family farm in Kennamer’s Cove. Jim says, “I constantly brag about what a special place KDS DAR School is and how blessed I am to be a graduate. I wish others truly understood how much the school means to the community and its alumni.”
