2016 ANNUAL REPORT

2 PCA&D

PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGNFounded in 1982, PCA&D is a private, professional art college offering BFA degrees, certificates, credentials, and curricula that enable students of all ages to pursue art as their life’s work.

PCA&D is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), is approved as a college and for degree-granting privileges by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD).

Mission Pennsylvania College of Art & Design is a professional art college offering a BFA degree, certificates, credentials, and curricula that enable students of all ages to pursue art as their life’s work.

Educational PhilosophyCommunication as Currency in the Curriculum: Creating influence through adaptive thinking, effective making, and an articulate voice.

PCA&D’s learning experience teaches students adaptive thinking techniques and effective

making skills that result in a deliberate and influential artistic voice. Students engage with an interactive process of concept, construction, critique, and redesign in an immersive experiential environment. Because visual, verbal, and virtual communication is increasingly valued in a global society, our curriculum emphasizes the relationships among thinking, making, and communicating. We transform our students by challenging them to cultivate expansive points-of-view and create sophisticated visual output. The ability to continue to learn and create extends beyond the college experience.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT 3

This Annual Report reflects PCA&D’s strong foundation, steady financial performance, and progress on a strategic planning process that provides a road map for achieving our Envisioned Future 2025.

As a core piece of our strategic planning, PCA&D is investing in our students, ensuring the College can recruit the next generation of art and design leaders to Lancaster. The 2016 admission numbers show this investment has already made a significant impact. In addition, this year the College began work to create a center dedicated to ensuring industry standard technology is available for our students. The Cintiq & New Sound Studio will serve students across all majors, keeping pace with technological developments in art and design, and ensuring that graduates are highly competitive in the job market and graduate school.

PCA&D’s investment in scholarship and technology reflects the board’s confidence in the strategic plan, and the College’s ability to achieve its goals. I would like to thank Robert Krasne, Jessica Sponsler, and Susan Traverso who were each integral to PCA&D achieving the goals laid out in the 2013-2016 strategic plan, laying the groundwork for the success of this past year and the foundation for our next strategic plan moving forward.

David Buckman, Board Chair, 2016

FROM THE PRESIDENTPCA&D is a community of artists, designers, writers, poets, scientists and professional educators who use creative thinking and assessment to make sure our students have the best professional art and design education possible. Our forward-looking curriculum ensures that the students engage in experiences and opportunities that prepare them for a life in art.

This Annual Report is an overview of new initiatives and completed projects. It is also a thank you to our supporters who make it all possible.

A few of our notable achievements this year include:

Continued increase in enrollment in the BFA and Continuing Education programming

Strong success of our alumni placement (90% of our Class of 2015 responded to the annual survey of graduates; 100% reported being employed or in graduate school)

Opened 21-station Cintiq Lab & New Sound Studio in Fall 2016, celebrated year seven of our MOSAIC program and year eight of Designathon

Implemented new Health & Wellness initiatives for our students, including the launching of UStudio programs which highlighted programs and services on PCA&D’s campus and in the local community.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s Continuing Education department allows students of all ages and skill levels to enrich their lives with creativity and develop practical skills. Art, design, and marketing classes for elementary age children, teenagers, and adults offer a creative outlet for self-expression, skill and confidence-building through making art, as well as an opportunity to expand professional skills for career development.

Through the Continuing Education department, PCA&D provides full and partial scholarships to school-aged students based on merit and financial need. These scholarships provide access to process-based art learning for children of Lancaster County. In 2016, PCA&D provided 97 Youth Art scholarships to local students totaling over $11,000 in awards.

The College’s certificate program includes Digital Design Series: Web, Digital Design Series: Print, Social Media Marketing and Communication, and Digital Photography. More than 60 adults are currently pursuing their certificates at PCA&D, which provides practical skills and credentials for professionals and career-seekers in the area.

Main Gallery Highlights

Through its Main Gallery, PCA&D hosts exhibitions showcasing artwork by nationally recognized artists that enrich the learning experience of our BFA students and the creative community of Lancaster. Thanks to funding from donors we are able to engage diverse populations of our community with special events.

This past season the Main Gallery presented The Mosaic Project with artists Robert Pruitt and Shadra Strickland. Activities surrounding the exhibit included thought-provoking artist talks by both artists, a workshop with local high school students, and a “Meet the Artist” session with 20 Mosaic Scholarship middle school students.

Sculptor John Bisbee impressed our creative community by using only different sized nails to create his unique installations. Sculpting with nails for the past thirty years, John Bisbee’s mantra is “only nails, always different.”

Artist Jeff Hesser brought large-scale drawings, clay, wax, bronze and digitally rendered 3D sculptures, and a brand new digital interactive piece titled Newborn. His practice is rooted in drawing and observation of the human form, simultaneously expanding into relatively new art-making media such as 3D printing and interactive digital experiences.

The Mountain and the Bumblebee group show included selected works by contemporary artists and poets who confront broadly defined notions of landscape as both cultural icon and raw material. The work encompassed a variety of media including photography, sculpture, painting, digital media and poetic verse.

PCA&D’s signature event was the annual Senior Show & Celebration. Graduating seniors filled the entire building with their work. Our thanks to the following sponsors: Benchmark Construction, House of Pizza-Lancaster, The M&T Charitable Foundation, Murray Securus, Jim Castanzo, J&J Heating & Cooling, and in-kind media sponsor Fig Industries.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS ALL POSSIBLEGifts made by you and others ensure that Pennsylvania College of Art & Design can continue to offer its educational programs to the community. Every gift is an investment in the future of the College, the creativity of the community, and the lives of the young artists and designers who study here.

In particular, we would like to thank the members of the Remarque Circle. Members of the Remarque Circle are our partners in creating dynamic change in our community. Their gifts support the College’s indispensible initiatives, for example: new scholarships to attract an expanded student body, the industry standard technology our students need, and the Art Garden.

Thank you to everyone who has supported PCA&D by making a gift, enrolling in a class, attending an event, visiting the gallery, providing services to students, and being good neighbors. Creativity thrives at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design thanks to your generosity.
