Allergy&AsthmaNetworkistheleadingnationalpatient-centerednonprofitorganizationadvocatingonbehalfofthe50millionAmericanswithallergies,asthmaandrelatedconditions.FoundedbyNancySanderin1985,itsmissionremainsthesame:Toendneedlessdeathandsufferingduetoasthma,allergiesandrelatedconditionsthroughoutreach,education,advocacyandresearch.
Allergy&AsthmaNetwork(TheNetwork)takesaproactiveandcollaborativeapproachtodevelopingqualityasthmaand allergy education,advocacy andcommunityoutreachprograms,providingpatientsandfamiliescompleteaccesstopractical,timely,accurate,relevant,emotionallysupportiveandactionablepublications,materialsandservices.
Theorganization’s patient-centeredphilosophymakes an empoweringdifference for individualsdesiringasthmamanagementadviceinconsumer-friendlylanguage.Fromnewsletters,magazines,websites,andasupporttoll-freehelpline,theNetworkspeakstopatients’needsinawaythatachievesquantitativeandqualitativeresults.Throughtheseservices,theNetworkgetsdirectinputaboutspecificcommunityneeds.
ThegoaloftheNetwork’sstrategicplanistofulfillitsmissionbyworkingwithleadingexpertsandbuildingpatient-centeredcollaborativecareteamstoachieveoptimalhealthoutcomes.TheNetworkalignsallprogramsandactivitybasedonfourmissionareas:education,advocacy,outreachandresearch.

PUBLIC RELATIONSAllergy&AsthmaNetworkworkswith5W,aPRcompanylocatedinNewYork,toraiseawarenessoftheNetworkandthediseases.Toaccomplishthisgoal,5Wusesmediaplatformsincludingnationalandregionalbroadcast,print(longandshortleads)andtoponlineoutletsontopicssuchasMay’sWorldAsthmaDayandFoodAllergyAwarenessWeek,amongothers.Inaddition,5Wconnectswithvariousregionalandnationalallergists/immunologistsregardingsecuredandpotentialopportunitiesandinterviews.
MISSION AREA:
OUTREACHAllergy&AsthmaNetworkreachesouttopatients,families,caregivers,healthcareprovidersandindustryprofessionalsacrossthecountrytoeducateandexpandawarenessaboutallergies,asthmaandrelatedconditions.During2016,theNetworkparticipatedin30outreachactivitiesforpatienteducation,attended18medicalmeetingsandrecruitedmorethan7,000newmembers.

TheNetworkoffersadirectlineofcommunicationforpatientsandfamilies.Thisservicehastwocomponents:toll-freelineandonlinecontactusform.BotharemanagedbyNetworkstaffprovidinganswersandassistancetoanyonewithnonemergencyquestionsaboutasthma,allergies,COPD,anaphylaxis,medications,testsandtreatments.In2016theNetworkreceivedmorethan2,800 calls

OnNovember11,2016,Allergy&AsthmaNetworkandtheAmericanCollegeofAllergy,Asthma&Immunology(ACAAI)successfullyhostedthe2016NationalAsthmaSummit(SanFrancisco,CA).Thisone-dayeventbroughttogether100people(representativesoflocalasthmaprograms,asthmacoalitions,federalagencies)from27states.Participantsheardfromnationallyrecognizedexpertsaboutcurrenttrendsinasthmacareandadvocacyissues,andbrainstormedstrategiestoadvancetheimplementationofGuidelines-basedasthmacarethroughouttheU.S.
ThismeetingwashostedwithpartialsupportfromtheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC)NationalAsthmaControlProgram.

Anaphylaxis Community Experts
TheAnaphylaxisCommunityExperts(ACE)programistheforemostcomprehensiveanaphylaxiseducationprogramintheUnitedStates.Itsgoalistosavelivesbyraisingawarenessoflife-threateningallergies,equippingpatients,parents,schoolstaff,emergencyrespondersandotherswiththeskillstorecognizeandrespondimmediatelytosymptoms.
Theprogramiscomprisedofvolunteers,includinghealthcareproviders(board-certifiedallergists,schoolnurses,pediatricians,nursepractitioners,respiratorytherapistsandasthmaeducators)andlayindividuals,suchasparents,schoolstaffandmarketingprofessionals.

ThisprogramwasdevelopedandimplementedwiththesupportoftheAmericanAcademyofPediatrics.TheMedicalHomeChapterChampionsProgramonAsthma,AllergyandAnaphylaxisservestomeetanidentifiedneedforthedevelopmentofahigh-impact,nationalinitiativefocusedonimprovedqualitycareofpediatricpatientswithasthma,allergyand/oranaphylaxisissueswithinmedicalhomes.Thegoalistopromotethedeliveryofhigh-qualityasthma,allergyandanaphylaxiscarethroughteam-based,family-centeredcarecoordinationandco-managementamongpatientsandtheirfamilies,primarycarepediatricians,andpediatricasthmaandallergyspecialists,whileimprovinghealthoutcomesforallchildren.

Thisisa5-yearcooperativeagreementwiththeCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC)withthegoalofimplementingnationalcommunicationandeducationstrategiestostrengthenthedemandforGuidelines-basedasthmacareandasthma-friendlyenvironmentsintheUnitedStatesandamongchildrenwithasthma,theirparentsandcaregiversincludingtheHispanic/Latinocommunity.ThefocusisexpandingtheuseofasthmaactionplansamongtheHispaniccommunity.

AADCHisanannualeventinthemonthofMaythatbringstogetherpatientsandtheirfamiliesalongwithhealthcareprofessionals,industrypartnersandstakeholdergroupstoraiseawarenessofasthmaandallergies.AADCHgivesourattendeesachancetomeetwiththeirmembersofCongresstotakepartinfederaladvocacy–acriticalcomponentinourworktoendneedlesssufferinganddeathduetoallergiesandasthma.

•FederalAviationAdministration(FAA)ReauthorizationAct(H.R.636)–TheSenateFAAReauthorizationbill,H.R.636,authorizedfundsfortheFAAthroughSeptember30,2017.ThebillincludedprovisionsdirectingtheFAAto:1)evaluatethemedicalequipmentandsuppliesrequiredonairlineflights,and2)ensurethattherequireditemsmeettheemergencymedicalneedsofchildren.TheSenatebillspecificallymentionedepinephrineauto-injectors.TheHousebill,H.R.4441,didnotincludethislanguage.

Whilelegislationwesupportedcontinuedtogainincreasedbipartisansupportandcommitteeengagementin2016,themeasureswerenotfinalizedpriortotheendofthe114th
Congress.However,weareoptimisticmeasureswillbereintroducedinthe115thCongress.

In2016,weadvocatedforallergy-anaphylaxispoliciesinCalifornia,Illinois,NewHampshire,NewYorkandOhio,eachofwhichbecamelaw.Currently,49statesallowforstockepinephrineauto-injectorsinschoolsand30stateshavepublicentitylawsthatpermitvenues(e.g.,recreationcamps,youthsportsleagues,restaurants,amusementparks,sportsarenasanddaycarefacilities)tomaintainanepinephrineauto-injectoronsite,withtheintentionofreducingthetimeittakestogetlife-savingepinephrinetoapersonhavingasuddenanaphylacticreaction.
TheNetworkcontinuedtoadvocateforstatestoapproveschoolstockemergencysuppliesofalbuterol,themedicationinquick-reliefinhalersthattreatsasthmaflares.Therearecurrently10stateswithlawsorguidelinesthatpermitschoolstostockalbuterolwithaprescriptionandadministertoastudentbelievedtobeinrespiratorydistress.
COMMUNICATIONSNetworkstaffandmemberscarriedoutadvocacymessagesthroughcontactwithmembersofCongressandstatelegislaturesandvariousmediaoutlets.TheNetworkprovidedbothoralandwrittentestimony.

Forexample,priortoavoteintheHouseofRepresentativesonafundingbill(H.R.5538,fiscalyear2017InteriorandEnvironmentAppropriations)thatcontainedprovisionstoblock,weaken,anddelaycriticalcleanairprotections,NetworkmembersandvolunteerscontactedtheirHousememberstovoteNOinordertoprotectpublichealthfromairpollution.ThebilldidnotpassinitscurrentformandCongressapprovedaContinuingResolution(CR;H.R.2028)tocontinuepolicyandfundingprovisionsoffiscalyear2016AppropriationslegislationuntilApril2017.TheCRdidnotincludecontroversialriders,ormajorchangesinexistingfederalpolicy.
InthestateofLouisiana,theNetworkreachedouttoallmembersoftheHealthandWelfareCommitteeandthefullHouseofRepresentativestosupportatelemedicinepolicyproposal(HB570)thatwouldenableLouisianaresidentstosecurehigh-qualitycarethroughtheuseofmoderntechnologies.ThebillpassedtheHouseandtheSenateandwassignedintolaw(No.630)onJune17,2016.

TheObservationsofPatientExperienceintheNation(OPEN)AsthmaSurveywascommissionedbyAllergy&AsthmaNetworktoexplorecurrentattitudesofpatientsandhealthcareprovidersaboutasthmacontrolwiththegoalofidentifyinggapsinperceptionofthepatient’scondition.TheNetworksurveyed2,900peoplelivingwithasthmawhoweretreatedwithdailyprescriptionmedicine,aswellas850
