message from the music director and youth orchestra conductor
Dear KSYOA parents and friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our Winter Concerts, where we once again offer two concerts: Monday, February 13th, featuring the Preludium, Philharmonia, Sinfonia, and Youth Chamber Orchestra, and Monday, February 20th, featuring the Youth Orchestra.
We welcome three outstanding soloists over the course of these two Winter Concerts, beginning with KSO violinist Ruth Bacon, who will perform with the Youth Chamber Orchestra. The Youth Orchestra concert features the two winners of the annual KSYOA Concerto Competition, both of whom are pianists: Elianna Z. Lai, and Henry Shen, who played violin with the Youth Orchestra last year! This year’s KSYOA Concerto Competition was one of the most competitive ever, complete with our first-ever live Final Round!
And, for just the fourth time in the history of the KSYOA (but the second time in the past three years!), a complete, four-movement symphonic work will be performed, in concert, by the Youth Orchestra. As the Youth Orchestra continues to grow and develop – especially this year – it is my pleasure to present Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic Scheherazade, Op. 35, one of the truly great orchestral works of all time.
Our final concert will be May 1st, and we look forward to seeing all of you as we bring our 43rd season to a close!
A very special thanks to Rick Fox and Ralph Cianelli, the sponsors of these February concerts, as well as the Knoxville Symphony League for all of the superb work they contribute to our young musicians!
And many, many thanks to the parents, relatives, directors, and teachers who are here tonight to enjoy the concert. We couldn’t do this without you!
On behalf of the KSYOA, I thank you for your continued support of our organization, of your children’s musical endeavors, and for attending our concerts. The Arts have never been more important than they are now, and it is a tremendous feeling to know – and to see – how much hope and joy there is for the future of Music!

RUTH BACONRuth Bacon is in her sixth season as a core violinist with the Knoxville Symphony. She began her violin studies at the age of four in her native New Mexico. Some of her best musical memories were made in the
Albuquerque Youth Symphony program, which toured in Europe and Mexico when she was in high school. Ms. Bacon went on to study Suzuki Pedagogy in undergrad and violin performance in graduate school, receiving her Master’s of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2010. She was a Tanglewood Music Center Fellow for two summers, and she toured internationally with Star Wars in Concert. In addition to orchestral playing and teaching private students, Ruth loves chamber music and is a member of Inner Voices String Quartet in Knoxville. She spends her summers teaching as a guest clinician for summer violin camps and playing Principal Second violin with Ash Lawn Opera in Charlottesville, Virginia. She and her husband, Dr. Ace Edewards, live near Downtown Knoxville, where they enjoy drinking good coffee, exploring historic neighborhoods, hiking in the Smokey Mountains, and cuddling with their two orange tabbies, Hastings and Poirot.
Special thanks to the sponsors of the
KSYO Winter Concert and Concerto Concert:
Richard Fox & Ralph Cianelli
Thank you for supporting the education of our young musicians!
