Attendance MAttersUnexcused or Excused…absences all add up. That’s why it’s important to come to school as much as possible. Here are some tips: • Talk about the importance of attending school.

• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.

• Lay out clothes and backpacks the night before.

• Develop back-up plans for getting your child to school.

• Try not to schedule appointments or trips when school is in session.

• Encourage your child to take part in afterschool activities and clubs.

• Think twice about stomach aches and headaches. Both can sometimes be a sign of stress. Reach out to the school if you are concerned.

For help with attendance, or if you have questions, please call your child’s school. In some cases, staff may contact you to talk about attendance.

Do you know the difference between an

excused and unexcused absence?

Find out at:www.evscschools.com/

family_services

• Pick up a volunteer form at your child’s school or download it at www.evscschools.com. To access the form, click on the “Volunteer in our schools” button in the middle of the page. You will need to complete the volunteer application form for “one time” volunteer jobs (such as helping out at a school event) as well as those that are on-going. A new form is needed each year. • Fill out the form.• Hit submit and we do the rest!

Tips for a Safe Bus Ride

EVSC Extended Day Centers

Did you know…the EVSC has the largest transportation system in southwest Indiana? Each day, more than 14,500 students ride an EVSC bus to and from school. The EVSC’s goal is to keep each and every one of those students safe and deliver them on-time to school, ready to learn. You can help your child by making sure they follow these tips:

• Show respect by using words and actions that are kind, welcoming and helpful.

• Follow instructions and be alert.• Stay in your assigned seat until it is

time for you to get off the bus.• Keep hands and feet to yourself.

The ED Center (Extended Day) Program is available for children who need care before and/or after school. Children may attend before school from 6:30 a.m. until school starts and from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Any child in elementary school, K-6, is eligible on a first come, first served basis for a fee.

Children in the morning program will be able to purchase breakfast at the school cafeteria. Snacks will be provided for the afternoon program. Opportunities will be provided for study and enrichment. The ED Centers have space for students to do homework, read for pleasure, and participate in recreational activities.

For complete information, visit www.evscschools.com/family_services.

Get Involved! Volunteer!

For a smooth start to your day, make sure your

child arrives at the bus stop at least 10 minutes

before the scheduled bus arrival time.

Have questions? Call your school!

I think my child is being bullied! What can I do?1. Ask your child questions to see all sides of the story. • What happened? • Has this behavior happened before? • What happened BEFORE the bullying began? • When did the bullying take place? Where? • Did you tell an adult? If so, what did the adult say to do? • What did you do when you felt bullied? • Were other children involved?2. Listen to what your child is saying. Then look at the BULLYING REPORT FORM on your school’s website.3. Read the definition of bullying and think to yourself, does what my child told me fit this definition? 4. If so, report the bullying: Call the school counselor, social worker, or assistant

principal to find out if the situation has been addressed by school staff; and, if not, discuss next steps. Or, use the Tip Line at www.evscschools.com/about_us.

You can file a report by using the BULLYING REPORT FORM on your school’s website or request a paper report form from the school. You can expect a call back about the findings of the investigation. The school cannot share consequences other children receive.

Bullying

Per Indiana Code: 20-33-8-0.2

What is Bullying?• Overt, unwanted and repeated acts or gestures• Verbal or written communications or images• Physical acts, aggression or any other behaviors• Intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate or harm the targeted student

Indiana has four types and you can check out the requirements on the Indiana Department of Education website or ask your child’s school counselor. Before your child’s last semester, check with the school counselor to make sure your child has all the class/credit requirements for the diploma type.

Last minute SAT/ACT – Most students will take their SAT/ACT testing the spring of the junior year or the fall of their senior year. It is not unusual to take the test twice to see if students can improve their score. If your child has not taken the test or you feel your child’s score can be improved, you might want to sign your child up during winter break for the January/February testing.

College campus visits – Most colleges have days set aside for interested students to come and visit. You should check the college website to see when those days are and if an advance registration is needed. Also check with your child’s school counselor to see if there might be a group visit to an area college.

College application – College applications are all different. Students will want to request applications early from the colleges they are interested in attending. Once you have received the application, students need to read over it to see what requirements are necessary such as application fees, essays, and specific test scores, as well as what scholarships might be available.

NCAA for athletes – If your child is trying to get recruited to play college sports or to receive an athletic scholarship, they must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.ncaa.org. This is a MUST. No conversation between coach and athlete can legally take place if the student is not registered.

Scholarship deadlines – Just like college applications, scholarship applications come in all shapes and sizes. Make use of resources in your child’s school and local libraries to look up scholarships. Check with your place of employment or at your church to see if they offer a scholarship. Connect to sites on the web that bundle scholarship offers making it even easier to find scholarships for you. Check the daily announcements online at your child’s school. Have your child apply for all that they can. Also check the university or college they are interested in to see what the deadlines are for the scholarships they are offering.

FAFSA – All students planning on attending college should complete the FAFSA. FAFSA deadlines are usually at the beginning of March and before you can file your application students and parents must complete their federal taxes. The easiest way to fill out the FAFSA is online. Families can begin filling out the FAFSA form in October. The website at www.fafsa.gov will guide users through the process.

Attention 7th & 8th Grade Parents Your child may qualify for FREE tuition to college. Learn more about this state program by contacting the school, calling812-435-8489 or visitingwww.scholars.in.gov.

Healthy Schools

What does a healthy school look like?• Schools and families working together to create a healthy school environment.• Students and parents understanding the link between good health and school success.• Schools and PTAs selling healthy snacks.• School staff and parents rewarding students with experiences, not food.• Teachers using physical activity to help kids take “brain breaks” and learn better.• Students staying hydrated with water, not soft drinks or energy drinks.• Families bringing healthy food for lunch, snacks and celebrations, not fast food, or sugary treats.

What can you do?• Keep your child active! Active kids learn better.

Exercise and fresh air supplies nutrients and oxygen to the brain for improved attention, concentration, impulse control and memory.

• Identify ways to stay active as a family. Talk a walk or a bike ride, play ball, hike - anything to get moving!

• Provide a healthy, protein filled breakfast.• Make sure your student drinks plenty of water.

Water composes 75% of your brain, helps convert food into energy, regulates body temperature and more important functions.

• Develop a nightly routine to ensure your child get’s a good night’s rest.

The EVSC is working hard to create “Healthy Schools” so your child can learn. Research shows that good nutrition, exercise and rest help students succeed.

We need your help to turn your child’s school into a Healthy School!

Did you know…?You can figure out just how healthy your snacks are by using a “Smart Snack” calculator available at www.healthiergeneration.org.

And to learn more, check out our EVSC Healthy Schools Wellness Policy by logging onto www.evscschools.com/family_services.

On My Way Pre-KThe EVSC is one of the sites for Indiana’s new pilot Pre-K program, “On My Way Pre-K,” which is free to qualifying families. Call 812-435-8219 for additional information.

Kindergarten enrollment kicks off this month!

In order to enroll:• Your child must be five years old on or before August 1, 2017. • A copy of your child’s legal birth certificate (not the hospital certificate) should be given at the time of enrollment. • Students must be accompanied by parent/guardian at the time of enrollment.

Elementary schools are open from 8:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. M-F. Kindergarten orientations will be in April.

Early Childhood Early childhood education lays the groundwork for success later in school by successfully preparing students to enter kindergarten on time and ready to learn.

The EVSC offers high-quality early childhood preschool and childcare services throughout the corporation. These services focus on active learning – making learning fun for students, allowing them to explore new things and providing them with new experiences with which they can build knowledge.

Early childhood education in the EVSC is fully accredited and coordinated through the Culver Family Learning Center. For more information call the Culver Family Learning Center 812-435-8219.

Even StartDo you or someone you know have young children and need to complete their high school equivalency? If so the Even Start program may be the right place to start. This program offers individuals with infant, toddler and preschool age children a place to study and prepare for the high school equivalency exam with instructors who are willing to work with them on an individual basis. Participants’ children will attend a high quality early childhood education program.

For more information on this FREE program, contact the early childhood program at 812-435-8219.

The EVSC builds extra days into the calendar that are used to make up days when school is cancelled due to weather.

If needed, the EVSC also uses virtual make-up days.

Here’s how they work:• Your school will notify you if there is a

virtual make-up day. • On Monday of the virtual make-up

week, your student’s teacher will assign a lesson.

• Your student will have one week to complete the lesson using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

• Your student can complete the work at home, or before or after school.

• During the week, teachers are available to help students.

• Your student will submit the lesson for a grade.

During virtual make-up weeks, many schools are open for extended hours.

The EVSC also works with community partners such as libraries and youth centers. The partners offer

facilities, Wi-Fi access and computers and tablets students can use to

complete the virtual lessons.

Completed assignments are counted toward a student’s overall grade as well as attendance.

Questions? Call your school.

Reading TipsReading with your child is important, but you can also help your child develop reading skills as you go about your day. Here are some simple tips. Just choose one (or two) and give it a try!

• Do a running “play by play” as you go about errands and activities with your child.

• Point out words to your child as you go about your day. - “See the word ‘stop’ on the sign?”, “Can you read the first word on the

menu?”• Have a conversation with your child at least once a day. - Ask what she thinks about the television show she just watched, or ask

her to tell you about her day…from the beginning to the end. • Tell Family Stories. - Your child will delight in hearing them again and again, and it will help

him develop story-telling and writing skills.• Partner with your child to make up a story. - Take your starting cue from a picture in a book, or a person you see.• Point out the link between letters and sounds. - “John, the word ‘jump’ begins with the same sound as your name and

the same letter, ‘j’.”• Take advantage of car or bus rides. - The time in transit can be a good opportunity to tell stories, point out

words, or talk with your child. Keep books and magazines in your car.• Encourage your child to sing songs. - This can help her develop her ability to recognize and understand

words.

Do Your Best! The month of March is testing time in Indiana. The Indiana Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 and 10th to complete the ISTEP+ test. In addition, students in third grade also are required to take the state’s IREAD-3 test. IREAD ensures students are reading at a third grade reading level before they can proceed to the next grade. Below are some tips to help your child do their best.

Testing Tips• Get plenty of rest• Eat a well-balanced, protein rich breakfast• Be prepared• Relax• Be positive• Do your best

School Through the Years

Stay in Touch – Join EVSC Alumni AssociationJoin the EVSC Friends and Alumni Association to reconnect with old friends and find new ones! Graduates, friends, and parents of EVSC students are all welcome to join the EVSC family. We are always looking for those full of energy, talent, and volunteerism to continue supporting EVSC’s mission. To find out more or to join today, please email [email protected] or call 812-435-0913.

As a parent or caregiver, your role is to guide your child through the years. Here’s how you can help him or her prepare to move onto a new school, prepare for new responsibilities and be successful:

Kindergarten • Visit the school with your child and meet the teacher. Talk through the routines of the

school day. • At home, establish school bedtime routines early to get your child used to a new

schedule. Teach your child to get dressed, eat, clean up and use the restroom by themselves.

• Talk about what your child brings home from school, ask about artwork, lunch or recess…allow your child to share. Or, ask “What was the most fun thing you did today?”

Middle School • Visit the school. Help your child through using a combination lock.• Introduce ways to help your child become organized. Let your child choose what works

for them.• Let them handle challenges on their own. Instead of fixing an issue, ask your child,

“Have you talked with the teacher?” Help your child grow by allowing your child to suffer consequences of his or her actions.

• Encourage your child to take part in extra activities, but let them choose which ones.• Stay in contact with the school. Reach out to teachers if you have questions or

concerns about your child.

High School • Expose your child to new experiences and activities. • Encourage your child to take challenging classes or take part in job shadowing

opportunities.• Reach out to the school if you or your child are struggling at home. • Help your child identify his or her interests and talents, and help guide them through

college and career choices.

College and Career • Work with the school to identify educational programs, colleges and financial aid.• Ask the school about college entrance exams and application processes, but let your

child own the process…and the deadlines.• Help your child avoid “Senioritis” by continuing to stress the importance of school work

and attendance.

What to watch out for:No matter what age, if your child is complaining of headaches, stomach aches, sleeplessness, doesn’t want to go to school, or is acting out of character, ask what’s going on…or reach out to your school counseor or social worker. He or she may need a little extra support!

Through the Years Top Three!

The three most important ways you can support your child:

1. Talk with them about the importance of education2. Monitor grades and attendance using EVSC

Parent Access3. Show an interest in your child....talk about his or

her day, friends and goals

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it can also be a perfect time for learning.

Studies suggest that students can lose up to a month’s worth of academic knowledge over the summer. However, that doesn’t have to be the case. Here are some things you can do over the summer with your child to make sure they are ready when school starts back up in August.

Increase Summer Learning With These Tips:

• Check out your local public library. They often have reading lists and programs for children to enjoy.

• Create games and projects that involve learning. Set up a nature scavenger hunt or take a walk in the woods and learn about trees, plants, flowers, etc.

• Take advantage of local and regional museums. They often have special discounts for children as well.

• Tour area industries and manufacturing plants. • Have your child keep a summer diary.• Plant a garden and have your child learn about healthy fruits and

vegetables and how to grow their own food.• Have your student attend a summer day camp. There are many

to choose from and many boast summer learning opportunities such as engineering, science, art, etc.

• Check out educational websites that offer free games and programs for children.

• Visit your local zoo to learn about animals and get some healthy exercise.

• Put on a family play. Having your child write the script, rehearse and memorize lines helps him or her with their writing and organizational skills.

• Include a family fun night in your weekly activities. Think of games like Scrabble, Taboo or crossword puzzles.

Health TipsPack a healthy dose of fruit, veggies, low-fat cheese or unsalted nuts for a picnic or road trip.

It’s hard to believe, but school starts in just a few weeks. After the joys of summer break, it is sometimes difficult to get your child ready to go back to school. Below are some tips to get your child ready.

• Establish bedtime and morning routines.• Make sure your child is enrolled before the first day of school.• Identify your child’s bus information or how they will get to and

from school.• Ensure your student is up-to-date on their immunizations. To

check, visit www.evscschools.com/family_services.• Check to see if your student needs a physical or a sports

physical.

Purchase School SuppliesOne of the things many students look forward to is purchasing school supplies. Most stores begin putting out their supplies by July and many run specials throughout the month.

When shopping for school supplies, make sure you are getting what your child’s teacher has requested. School supply lists are available on your child’s school website and many also are available in the store. If you need assistance with school supplies, please contact the EVSC Center for Family, School, and Community Partnerships at 812-435-8866.

Plan for School Clothes Before you begin purchasing new clothing for your child, check with your child’s school to see if the school has an enhanced dress code. Many EVSC schools have a Dress for Success uniform policy that varies from the regular EVSC dress code. The Dress for Success policy is designed to keep students focused on classroom activities. Schools that have adopted the Dress for Success uniform dress code ask students to wear closed toe shoes, uniform-style pants and collared shirts. To see a complete list of approved items, visit www.evscschools.com/family_services.

A great way to purchase clothing for the new school year is to purchase an item or two each week throughout the summer. If you need assistance with school uniforms, please contact United Way 211 or your school counselor/social worker.
