President’s Report – John Cole

I would first like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as President of such an outstanding organization. The following are just a few of the events that took place over the past year that I would like to highlight. 2017 Fall Conference

In September 2017, Our Annual Fall Conference was held at beautiful Breezy Point Resort. It was an honor to host so many great people from across the state and country. It was a privilege to have Mark Rosen as our Keynote speaker. Mr. Rosen shared some great insight about business and remarkable stories from his long history of covering Minnesota sports. Multiple classes and breakouts were offered, as well as the always popular beanbag toss. Overall it was a fun week and I was honored to be a part of it. 2017 Spring Workshop

Our 2017 Spring Workshop had a little fresh look this year as we partnered with The Ice Sports Industry for their annual National Conference. Some of the highlights of the week were the many great educational opportunities, rink tours with on ice demonstrations, a two-day tradeshow, and the MIAMA suite night. We also had the immense pleasure of having Steve Gilliland as our Keynote Speaker at the conference opening. Through humor Mr. Gilliland encouraged the crowd to look inside themselves about where they are now and where they are headed. Another exciting week to be part of MIAMA. It has been a privilege to serve this wonderful organization over the past year and I continue to encourage all arena operators to remain engaged in training and networking events to help keep our industry moving forward.

Secretary/Treasurer Report – Dean Mulso & Jon Balvance

This report provides a recap of each Board of Director meetings held and keynote items of business.

Burnsville Ice Center, Burnsville, MN - Wednesday, October 5, 2016 We had outstanding bills of $1,035 owed for the Fall Conference. MIAMA is waiting for an invoice from ISI for the 2016 Fall Conference Class for the amount of $2,500. Travis & Dean working on correcting issues with Quickbooks 2016. Shakopee Ice Arena, Shakopee, MN – Wednesday, February 1, 2017 Membership renewal information has gone out to the membership. Dean emailed copies of renewals to the board for review on who has renewed or who has not renewed. Dean has been updating emails if different than what he has in current database. Board was asked to contact nearby rinks on renewals if they haven’t renewed. There has been numerous emails sent out regarding the ISI conference and we will continue to drive that registration for this event. Jeff H. asked if vendors can get an invoice vs. renewing online. Dean will explore this option. 27 vendors haven’t renewed as of today. We are pretty much on track for # of renewals as prior years. The price went to $200 as of last night. Dean asked Travis to change top of renewal to Arena or Vendor name vs. person's name on the top of the form. Financially we are doing really well overall. Larger carry-over than expected from 2016, approx. $6,000 more due to great sponsorships for events. Current balance is $63.096.15. Rogers Activity Center, Rogers, MN – Wednesday, May 3, 2017 As of May 3, 2017, MIAMA currently has 130 Members and 59 Vendor Members. The vendor #’s is down from prior years. We need to update rink finder so they aren’t active. Jon & Dean will work with Travis on cleaning that up and deactivating those accounts for use. They will still be visible on www.rinkfinder.com. Dean discussed how Jon, Dean and Travis access the backend of the www.miama.org website. This is used for invoices and email services. Jon, Dean and Travis will continue to work updating the contact information for rinks that don’t update their information. The goal is to lessen the bounce backs from bad email addresses. MIAMA has already paid ISI for the registrations of $26,000 and $3,000 for the keynote speaker. MIAMA has $59,424 in our account. Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, Bloomington, MN – Tuesday, May 30, 2017 This meeting was held to review any last-minute items for the ISI/MIAMA Conference. Dean handed out room host assignments and discussed to read the introductions and stick around to handle the evaluations. If a MIAMA board member is hosting a roundtable, please help facilitate to get the discussion going amongst the group. Review power point presentation for President John Cole. Evaluation Survey will go out on Tuesday, June 13th. Runestone Community Center, Alexandria, MN – July 12, 2017 All expenses have been paid to date except the hotel rooms $6,458.71 and lunch $3,256.75 for the ISI/MIAMA conference. We should have a total of $41,591.47 in expenses for the conference and revenues of $28,110.31. Our net investment into our education and networking should be $13,481.16. Our original investment for the 2017 budget was $9,833.00. We are still in great financial shape after all our expenses. Our balance should be right around $37,437.90 as of July 12, 2017.

Our second annual vendor sponsored bean bag tournament saw 48 teams compete and all participants and spectators enjoyed the event and evening. We had one keynote speaker for our 41st annual conference, Mark Rosen. Mark Rosen was our after-dinner speaker on Thursday evening. Mark Rosen is WCCO-TV’s sports director, anchor and reporter. In 2015 the City of Virginia renamed the back rink at the Miners Memorial Building the James Padgett Rink in his honor for all the hard work he did for the area.

The annual award is presented to an ice arena that has distinguished itself as a leader, innovator and contributor to the ice arena industry.

Social Committee – Dean Mulso & Jon Balvance

The MIAMA Social committee held one event in 2016 - 2017.

This year’s event was held on Sunday, April 4, 2017 at the Xcel Energy Center for a Minnesota Wild Game. We had 99 people attend which was as many tickets as we could buy for this game. The afternoon began with MIAMA supplied appetizers during a social & information exchange on the suite level at the Xcel Energy Center. Our group sampled some gourmet food from the Xcel Energy Center & then moved to our seats and watched the Wild take on the Colorado Avalanche in a 5-2 win.

The intent of the social committee is to have events where our MIAMA members and families along with MIAMA Sponsor Members can get together in a social setting and share ideas and to network. If you have any suggestions for the MIAMA Social Committee or would like to be a part of the social committee, please let any of the committee members know.

PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

MN Hockey Report – Rich Rakness

With the Learn to Skate Program, Try Hockey for free, 2 on 2 Challenge and Grow the Game events MN Hockey is continuing to grow at the younger age levels. For the 2016-17 season, MN Hockey had 18,002 participants at the 8-U level. This is again the largest number of players at this age level ever our state. The MN Hockey Recreational League went above the previous number and continues to get more players that are looking for a less competitive environment Red Wing has been moved from District 9 to District 8 for the 17-18 season and will now be a permanent member of District 8. The Hard Divider Program is still being offered by MN Hockey. Your Association that uses your facility should contact MN Hockey to consider the purchase of the hard dividers. These temporary boards are very useful in cross ice events. The MN Hockey Spring High Performance programs and the Fall Tier 1 League have added more ice hours to our rinks revenues. These programs look as if they are here to stay as it is increasing the number of participants in those age groups. The Girls 15-U has been a trial program for the last 2 years and now has been voted to be a replacement for the old Girls 14-U level. We want to thank MIAMA and it member rinks for all that they are doing to try to help us promote are community based programming that is a cornerstone to our continued success.
