Russell is one of the most prolific and acclaimed classical guitarists alive today. He has released numerous recordings, tours internationally and has received a long list of prestigious awards, include a Grammy Award for his CD Aire Latino. Admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shosta- kovich, the quartet has is also an important advocate of new mu- sic through over 25 commissions and numerous premiere perfor- mances. The Alexander String Quartet has served since 1989 as Ensemble in Residence for SF Performances and Directors of the Morrison Chamber Music Center at SF State University. Apprenticing with Gerald Wilson, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath and Nancy Wilson, he served as lead trumpeter with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He has toured with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter (‘Tribute to Miles’ tour). Sean is current Artist-in- Residence at SF Performances and is a member of The SF JAZZ Collective. Free Concert with Conversation Series 2016-2017 Friday, November 18, 2016 6-7pm Arturo O’Farrill, Pianist Arturo O’Farrill, Grammy Award winning pianist, composer, educator, and founder/Artistic Director of Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. O’Farrill is the son of the late Chico O’Farrill, a master of Afro Cuban Jazz. Arturo developed as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, The Fort Apache Band, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte.
