Comprehensive Needs Assessment

Demographics

Demographics Summary

Demographics have remained fairly stable. There is some school growth - gained about 20-30 additional students this year at BHS. The racial and socio-economic make-up of the school has remained stable for several years.

We hope to focus on better attendance for ALL groups this year.

In addition, the BHS staff is not as diverse as the student population.

Demographics Strengths

Various student groups get along well with one another. All students have equal opportunities at BHS.

Demographics Needs

BHS is about 45% socioeconomically disadvantaged. The BHS Student Success Coordinator focuses on this population. We have a strong program to helpmeet their needs.

Attendance is around 96% for BHS. We would like to see it at 97% or higher. We will focus on various attendance initiatives this year.

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Summary

This is an area that the campus site based team would like to see improvements. BHS has a difficult time getting enough qualified applicants for variouspositions. Administration would like to make an effort to recruit highly qualified teachers. The principal attended a job fair hosted by Texas StateUniversity in November. She plans to attend another job fair in the Spring. By posting job vacancies to various recruiting sites and attending more job fairs,BHS hopes to recruit more highly qualified applicants.

Retaining quality new hires is also important. The BHS campus site-based team hopes that BISD can offer a salary increase to employees in 2017-2018 or inthe near future.

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Strengths

1. We were able to fill all CTE teacher positions with highly qualified teachers - this can be a challenge for rural schools

2. We retain our really good teachers/staff.

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Needs

1. It was very difficult to find an English I teacher this year that fit the needs of BHS. We are very pleased that we secured Ms. Hoff in December.

School Context and Organization

School Context and Organization Summary

The Site Based Team saw no major problems in this area other than a need for a Performing Arts Center to accommodate Fine Arts. The band has outgrownour facilities.

School Context and Organization Strengths

Sufficient facilities for our students in most areas at most campuses

School Context and Organization Needs

Need for a Performing Arts Center. There is currently no district facility that can safely host band concerts, etc... due to sheer numbers of people that attendthe events. The only option will be to split all band events to only one band at a time at performances (6th only, 7th/8th only, high school only, etc...)
