III.Ph.D.REQUIREMENTS B.TeachingExperienceAppendix

DepartmentofAnthropologyBestPracticesforAnthropologyTA-ships

Overview:Teachingassistantshipsplayanimportantroleingraduatestudenttrainingandprovideanopportunityforstudentstoacquireteachingexperienceandskillsunderfacultymentorship, andto gain expertise both inside and outside of their areas of emphasis. As noted in the GraduateSchool Handbook (v14), “Teaching is an integral part of graduate training in most doctoralprograms at Brown. Students are expected to teach as part of their professional training andscholarlyapprenticeship.”TheAnthropologyGraduateHandbookconfirmsthat“Inordertoinsureadequateprofessionaldevelopmentandtraining, eachstudentisrequiredtohavesometeachingexperienceby the time they complete the PhD.” TAship is an integral professional developmentcomponentof thePhD.Thenorm inanthropologyatBrown is that graduate studentsTA for sixsemesters. Atminimum, as a PhD requirement, anthropology graduate studentsmust TA for atleasttwosemestersinordertoattainabasiclevelofteachingexperience.

HowareTAsassignedtoparticularcourses?TheGraduateSchoolHandbookstatesthat“Programsoften assign graduate students to courses according to their interests and areas of expertise, broadly defined; however, a student’s teaching experience is greatly broadened by teachingassignmentsoutsideoftheimmediateareaofexpertise.”In2015-16,wedecided,forthefirsttimeand inresponsetograduatestudentconcerns,topre-assignTAs. Paja,asDGS,pre-assignedTAsfor Spring 2016 in late Fall 2015;most of the assignmentswere able to remain as she hadpre-assignedthem.Shepre-assignedTAsagainforFall2016,andwewillcontinuethispracticeforAY2016-17 to gathermore information on whether it is effective. Pre-assignments weremade byattending to and balancing the following factors: graduate student course schedules, graduatestudent TAing preferences and research interests, faculty requests, teaching needs and TA-to-student ratios, and previous TA assignments. TAs should not be responsible for more than 50studentspersemester,asanabsolutemaximum,andwestriveforlowerratios.

Communication/supervision/mentorship. Overall, we encourage faculty and TAs to strive forcollaborative teaching relationships. We encourage the “teaching team” tomeet at least oncebeforethestartofterm,andregularlythereafter.Intheinitialmeeting,coursecontentanddesigncanbediscussed,andplanscanbemadeforobservingtheTAduringthecourseofthesemester.In

They can also discuss how to managecompetingdemandsandprotecttheTA’stime.ThesemeetingsarealsoopportunitiesfortheTAtoconsultaboutteachingstrategies,asrecommendedbytheGraduateSchoolHandbook.InstructorsandTAsshoulddiscussgradingstandardsandexpectations.TAsmayalsoconsultbyemailorphoneifthereisamoretime-sensitivematter.TAswillbenefitfrominstructorconsultationregardingtheTA’sgoalsandtherelationshipoftheTAshiptothosegoals,aswellasmentorshipabout“courseplanning,designingassignments,grading,andclassroomstrategies.”

Evaluation. The Anthropology Graduate Handbook states that “Students who TA for theDepartmentshouldexpecttoreceiveawrittenevaluationoftheirperformanceafterthesemesterends (Form 1). If they do not receive such evaluations, students should alert the DGS…TAs alsoreceive student evaluations after the course is concluded, whichwill be added to the student’sdepartmental file.”Theevaluation should ideally includedetails from the instructorobservingatleastonesectionmeetingandalecture, ifoneoccurred.

OutsideTraining.TheDepartmentencouragesstudentstoacquaintthemselveswithresourcesandtrainingprovidedbyTheSheridanCenterforTeachingandLearning.

HowmanyhoursperweekdoTAsspendonteaching?TheGraduateSchoolHandbookstatesthat“Afullappointmentusuallyrequiresatleast18hoursofworkperweek,butshouldnotexceedamaximumof20hoursperweekinanygivenweek.”Withthisinmind,primaryinstructorsshouldbemindful of other demands on TAs’ time and energies and shouldmake the course schedulemanageableforTAs,adjustingcourseplansifnecessary.Somewaystodothisincludesharingthesyllabus aheadof time so that TAs are awareof thegrading timelines; adjusting theassignmentstructure and deadlines based on TA feedback; clearly indicating to undergraduates what theexpectedturnaroundwillbeforfeedback,and/oralertingtheminadvanceiffeedbacktimesforaspecific assignment are expected to be longer than usual; etc. We recommend that TAs keepsimplewrittenrecordsoftimespentonteaching.Iftheyfindthattheyareexceedingthe20-hourmaximum,theTAandinstructorshoulddiscussthesituationandmakeadjustments.

Whatis involvedinTA-ing?AccordingtotheGraduateSchoolandAnthropologyHandbooks,theinstructor is responsible forcoursedesign,content, conduct,and implementation.The instructor

also supervises and mentors the TA. TAs are expected to attend all class meetings and shouldrequest approval to be absent if necessary. If more than one TA is assigned to a course, theworkloadshouldbemoreor lessequitableamongthem.ThedutiesoftheTAvarydependingonthesizeandkindofcourse,butincludeholdingatleast2officehoursperweekandbeingavailabletoundergraduatesbyappointment.Dutiesmayalso include leadingdiscussion sections, draftingquizzesorpaperprompts, gradingpapersandexams, offeringtheoccasionallecture, assistingwithlogistical issues related to readings and other media, and maintaining course related websites, among other things. These responsibilities are pedagogical opportunities throughwhich TAs canlearn important professionalization skills that will assist them in their careers as teachers andresearchers. Tothatend, weencourageboth instructorsandTAsto identifyclearlynotonlytheresponsibilitiesofbothpartiesbutalso thepedagogicalgoalsassociatedwithmeeting them.Wealso encourage instructors to provide TAs with a list of expectations and duties related to thespecificcoursetheyareTAing.
