Come Celebrate Tremont October 8th

Second Annual Tremont Fundraiser to Help Support Rebuilding Lincoln Park Gazebo

It’s time to Celebrate Tremont again! Last year’s inaugural Celebrate Tremont benefit with reverse raffle was a big hit and we’re doing it again on Saturday, October 8 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Annunciation Greek Church. The event promises to be a fun-filled evening for Tremont residents, friends and supporters while raising funds to help ensure Tremont remains the vibrant urban village it is today. A portion of proceeds will support rebuilding the Lincoln Park Gazebo to include lighting, security cameras, electricity and wifi for concerts, vendors at various events and residents to enjoy.

Tickets to the event are $100 each and include:• One reverse raffle ticket• Passed hors d’oeuvres and food stations for dinner with a

variety of entrees and sides• An open bar with beer, wine, liquor and soft drinks

There will also be sideboards, live entertainment and a silent auction with great items to bid on. In addition to rebuilding the Gazebo, proceeds from all ticket sales will assist Tremont West Development Corporation’s nonprofit mission of organizing an inclusive community, building a unified neighborhood and promoting our community as a national destination. This event is crucial to support neighborhood programming that our residents and visitors enjoy, including: Tremont Farmers’ Market, Arts in August, Tremont Healthy Corner Store Initiative, Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival, Artist in Residence program, directional signage, and block club and committee organizing.

Tickets are limited. Get yours today!Purchase your tickets through Eventbrite at celebratetremont.eventbrite.com or deliver your check or cash to Michelle Davis at the Tremont West office.

Sponsorship Opportunities If you’re interested in being a Celebrate Tremont sponsor, your support of $1,500 will include:• A table of eight tickets with your organization’s name on

the table• A tax deduction of $700

On behalf of the businesses and residents of the newly formed Irishtown Bend block club I’d like to introduce ourselves to you. Our neighborhood isn’t new, and as it turns out it isn’t even new to Tremont. But Tremont is new to us. While we were represented for many years by the now defunct Flats Oxbow Association, our neighborhood became lost in the shuffle of CDC borders. In late 2015 we learned that we fell within the Tremont West service area and after a number of preliminary meetings we are proud to be moving forward with our partnership with Tremont West. Our neighborhood can be traced back to the Bridge War between Cleveland and Ohio City which not only helped define our neighborhood but also the future direction of our region. Irish immigrants soon followed helping to build canals and railroads that would bring industry and prominence to Cleveland. Their history has been forever preserved in the Irishtown Bend Archaeological district recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. Since then various industries, businesses and families have called our neighborhood home while sharing and embracing our unique mix of maritime and industry with the Columbus Road lift bridge as it’s centerpiece.

The immigrants have long since moved on. Today our neighborhood is being repopulated with new housing development, along with industrial conversions to residential along Columbus Road. Recreation is drawing visitors to the neighborhood thanks to efforts of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation, the Foundry, Crooked River Skatepark, Ctown Cross Fit, The Redline Greenway and the Cleveland Metroparks. And of course, while new meeting places such as Brick and Barrel Brewing and Merwin’s Wharf are serving up drinks to our new friends, old standbys like Hooples are continuing to appeal to visitors, residents and labors alike with some of the best views of the city and walls that are adorned with the images of our past. We are looking forward to continue to define a new direction for our neighborhood; one with a unique history and location in Cleveland while having Tremont West along with the residents and businesses of Tremont and Duck Island as our partner.

Old Central Viaduct Piers are Part of the Landscape for New Bridge Looking at the work going on in the west slope (the area from Abbey Avenue to the Cuyahoga River) it is clear there are two very old structures which were built, or rebuilt, as part of this very new George V. Voinovich Bridge. Two sandstone piers which were once part of the old Central Viaduct have been reconstructed along what will be the extension of the Towpath Trail leading up to Abbey. The Central Viaduct stood in place from 1888 to 1941. And while it had a storied and not always pleasant history - including the cable car loaded with 17 passengers which plummeted into the river from the bridge - by 1941 the bridge was obsolete. Steel from the viaduct went into the World War II war efforts but other remnants of the bridge, like the sandstone piers and other sandstone structures, were left largely untouched and ignored while the Innerbelt Bridge was constructed in the early 1950’s. Those elements have now been repurposed. The Ohio Department of Transportation worked with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office in order to ensure the most inconspicuous detail was not overlooked. The piers which once supported the Central Viaduct were taken apart piece by piece, tagged and stored until they could be reassembled at the bridge’s landing points, on the downtown side and on the Tremont side. The piers can be seen from Canal Road and what will become

Matt Talbot Inn at Landmarks Commission

The Matt Talbot Inn located at 2270 Professor Avenue is being nominated as a City Landmark. The public hearing will be scheduled for Aug. 25th. Please contact Michelle Davis for information about the meeting, [email protected] or 216-575-0920, ext. 103. Known most recently as the Matt Talbot Inn, the building was built in 1909 as a parish house for St. John Cantius Church and served as a convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph. The architect was William Jansen who also designed the school next door. The convent was nominated as a Cleveland Landmark on July 23, 2015.

Tremont History ProjectHEIGHTS MÄENNERCHOR

The Heights Maennerchor was founded October 8, 1873 in the Heights area of the near West Side (Tremont) of Cleveland. It was one of the first German singing societies in Cleveland, formed 25 years after the Frohsinn Singing Society. Its purpose was not to compete, but to add to the amount of Germanic song in the area. Heights Maennerchor performed at various functions including the 1874, 1893, and 1927 Saegerfests in Cleveland as well as various “German Days”. Heights Maennerchor became part of the United German Singers in 1904, but maintained and sang under its old name. The group sang before 20,000 people at a German Day festival at Edgewater Park in 1933. The Maennerchor held meetings at its home on W. 10th St. at Jefferson and Starkweather Avenues each week. A fire destroyed the hall in 1943. The fire originated from an exploding blow torch in the kind Hardware Store on the ground level. Seven pumpers, two ladder trucks and one rescue squad answered the triple alarm. Firemen were hampered by the zero temperature which covered their equipment in ice and made a giant iceberg of the ruined building. Several hundred spectators shivered in the cold as they watched the fire. Heights Maennerchor merged with Schwaebischer Saengerbund (organized August 22, 1885) on January 29, 1967 to form a new organization called the Cleveland Maennerchor. The organization is located at 4515 State Road near the intersection of Pearl and State.

the Towpath Trail extension leading from Scranton Road, up the west slope to Abbey Avenue. The trail will be lined with informational plaques of historical points of interest, including information on the three generations of bridges crossing the Cuyahoga in this area. Other pieces of the sandstone will line the trail as benches and decorative pieces. Crews working with the sandstone had to be inventive in determining how to work with it. There are dimples evident in some of the pieces which show how the blocks were handled in the 1800’s with an ice pick like device. But today’s tools and machinery are quite different, so instead the crews used canvas straps to gently handle the blocks. In some cases where there was a missing piece, another sandstone block had to be cut to size in order to fit. When rebuilding of the piers is complete, iit will create a wonderful juxtaposition of old and new.Remember: Getting to Tremont is still easy using the new Abbey loop ramp. However, the W 14th Street entrance ramp to I-90 east is closed until the second bridge is complete in late 2016. Please keep in mind this is an active construction zone and stay safely away. For more info on the project, visit www.Innerbelt.org.In this photo: Crews gently place one of the sandstone blocks into place as they rebuild one of the original piers from the Old Central Viaduct which opened in 1888.

Tremont residents are crafty, do-it-yourselfers. They also like to eat. For these reasons alone, Ushabu is sure to get off to a fast start. This August, Ushabu is bringing Japanese fondue to 2173 Professor Avenue. Translated to English, Ushabu roughly means “You Fondue”. Haowie and Sharon Liu have mixed traditional Japanese and Taiwanese cuisines into this modern concept. As guests arrive, they will place their fondue order on an Ipad with the help of their server. Guests will then choose from a variety of meats like ginger chicken or beef and then from a variety of sauces like spicy miso or seaweed. Once the order is in, guests receive individual pots of sauces, broths, veggies and the rest of their handpicked recipe to cook the meat. After submerging the meat for 5-10 seconds, the personally blended entre is tender and ready to eat. “Our goal is to provide the best locally sourced ingredients and then leave everything else up to you,” said Howie. Whereas the main fondue courses come from Japanese culture, the Liu’s also offer Taiwanese street-food appetizers like Taiwanese style popcorn chicken. While offering traditional options, Ushabu will also have a few surprises on the menu. “Tremont is open-minded,” said Haowie. “They will not be scared to try new foods and flavors,” he continued. One new flavor can already be found on the dessert menu.

Do it Yourself at Ushabu

Written by Jimmy PerkinsA sweet red bean paste can be enjoyed here as in most traditional Japanese restaurants. For those who need more sweets, Ushabu and Mason’s Creamery taste tested black sesame and mochi ice cream during Taste of Tremont. There could be more options like this available as well. Ushabu’s concept does not stop with its menu. The Liu’s worked hard to make their interior as locally sourced and modern as their ingredients. With the help of Cleveland’s Richardson Design, the interior design balances natural wood, the building’s original bricks, and looming stone archways. The open and inviting spaces of Ushabu should have Tremont residents feeling at home. Since guests are cooking as well, it could be harder than ever to tell the difference. If deciding between staying in and going out, Ushabu will soon offer a flavorful alternative.

Auburn-Lincoln ParkBlock Club members were scheduled to gather in Lincoln Park on Monday, July 25th for their Annual Park Clean-up in advance of the free arts, music, dance, and theatre programming of Arts in August (August weekends in Lincoln Park). Thanks to all who pitched in! A Cookout at the Fruit Avenue garden of block club member, Nick Laureano, was to follow the Clean-up. Many thanks to Nick for hosting us – and for all who participated and brought food to share! Members are reminded that the Farmers’ Market in Lincoln Park resumes on Tuesdays beginning July 26th from 4:00 – 7:00pm following a one-week hiatus during the RNC 2016 Convention. Please check the Safety Page of Tremont West’s web site or the Auburn Block Club Facebook page www.Facebook.com/auburnblock club to keep updated on safety concerns and to “turn lights on”, “put your junk in you trunk”, “don’t keep a quarter in your cup” to discourage would-be criminals. Upcoming events are always listed in the Inside Tremont monthly newspaper and on the TWDC website at www.tremontwest.org. Many thanks to members, Margy and Amo Judd, and Auburn-LP members and participants in the Tremont Trash Patrol for their neighborhood clean-up sweeps in advance of the Republican National Convention coming to town. Thanks for helping to keep our neighborhood clean and beautiful! A reminder that Scranton-Carter Road construction will continue through October, 2016. Expect intermittent closures. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 15th at 6:30 pm (location to be confirmed via mail). Please join us and bring a neighbor!

Central TremontDue to the July 4th Holiday, Central Tremont neighbors did not meet in the month of July. Please join us at our annual Block Club Summer Party on Monday, August 1st at 6:30pm at Post 58 (2442 Professor Avenue). This will be a potluck so please bring a dish to share! We will also be accepting school supply donations for Tremont Montessori School students. Keep an eye out for postcards and emails with further details. For more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs Lynne Nowel ([email protected]) or Julie Goulis ([email protected]). Duck IslandThe Duck Island Block Club met at St. Wendelin Parish rectory on Tuesday, July 5th, and was called to order by Co-Chair, Cami Ross. Absent were officers, Tyree Thompson, Co-Chair, and both Co- Secretaries, Dan McCoy and Alicia Hudson. Our safety concerns were then addressed with a friendly reminder of the importance of our neighborhood Watch page, especially as summer and outside activities prevail. The Second District Community Services Unit officer, Lt. Steve Cornacchione, also re-enforced the Unit’s presence in our community by addressing any specific concerns. Special Guests Westleigh Harper of Harper Horton Architects returned for a 2nd presentation of a single family home proposed for 1684 Lorain, on what is known to the community as Overlook Hill – the Lorain extension. A somewhat spirited discussion occurred between longtime Duck Island residents in that area, those who questioned community commitment to retaining skyline views and green space, in contrast to these proposed housing projects. The block club voted down a letter of support for the project to the Board of Zoning Appeals, with 5 voting members opposed, 4 in favor, and 1 abstaining. A letter was sent to BoZA reflecting these concerns and the vote. Co-Chair Cami Ross and Scott of Tremont West gave an update on the Public Meeting on the Republican National Convention (RNC) and its impact on residents sponsored by Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack, held on June 27th at St. Wendelin Parish. Cleveland Police Deputy Chief Ed Tomba and 2nd District Commander Tom Stacho were in attendance and gave reports at that meeting. A handout on RNC related road closures and restrictions was shared with participants at our July meeting. There were several concerns and comments regarding the official parade route for protest march – and the closure of the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge during the RNC. Congestion and crowd control topped the list of issues of concern. We were then reminded of some important upcoming events that affect the neighborhood, such as the return of the Tremont Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays this summer and the annual Voices Against Violence program in Lincoln Park in August. The annual national Night Out Against Crime will return to Steelyard Commons on Tuesday, August 2nd from 5-9pm Check it out following our August meeting! For more information about block club meetings and activities please contact our Co-Chairs: Cami Ross - [email protected] and Tyree Thompson - [email protected] – or contact Community Involvement Manager, Scott Rosenstein at TWDC, 216-575-0920 ext 106 - [email protected]. Please “like” our block club on Facebook – and please join us at our next business meeting, Tuesday, August 2nd, 6:30pm at the St. Wendelin Parish rectory followed by the Night Out Against Crime safety programming for the whole family at Steelyard Commons (near Home Depot).

Irishtown Bend (See article on p. 2)The inaugural meeting of the Irishtown Bend block club was held at Brick and Barrel Brewery at 1844 Columbus Rd. The meeting was called to order by block club leader Shawn Kenney. Tremont West’s Housing & Economic Development Director, Matt Moss, introduced himself to those in attendance, provided an over view of his role in the group and took questions from members about recently announced development projects in the area. Andrew Brickman of Brickhaus Partners was scheduled to present an overview of his project overlooking Columbus and Carter Roads but was unable to attend, and will be rescheduled at a future date. In lieu of a presentation, Kenney provided a summary of discussions with Brickman on their progress. Lennie Stover of the Rotary Club and Redline Greenway gave an update on project progress, RNC preparations, along with current funding levels and future potential fundraisers. Stover has also offered to organize a tour of the greenway for block club members with the help of resident Bob Biggar and will communicate that out to the group once a date has been set. Scott Rosenstein, Community Involvement Manager of Tremont West, then reviewed with the group outstanding items for formalizing the block club. Resident, Marcy Vander Tuig, offered to prepare recommendations for Bylaws, and Kenney was tasked with meeting notes along with an introduction article for the Inside Tremont newspaper. At this point, the block club is meeting quarterly, and the next meeting is scheduled to be held Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30pm. Meeting location TBD. Please join us!

Lincoln HeightsThe Lincoln Heights Block Club held its July meeting on Monday, July 11th at St. Augustine Church. Anthony Villa, the Executive Director of Fortaleza Treatment Center, located at 2301 Scranton, attended our meeting and introduced himself and his facility to the membership. The treatment center is primarily focused on opioid addiction and offers a full spectrum of group and individual counseling. It is an outpatient facility that does not dispense medications, and there is armed security on-site during regular business hours. We welcome Fortaleza, and their mission to strengthen individuals, families and communities to the neighborhood. We heard from Rachael Sommer from CiCLEvia about the upcoming “open street series” coming to West 25th Street during the months of August, September, and October this year, and encourage everyone to stop by and check it out if possible. The first event of the series will take place on August 13th from 3-7pm and is a family event. See www.ciclevia.com for more information. Naomi Sabel from Sustainable Community Associates was in attendance on behalf of the Ohio Awning project. We were presented with much background information and various issues and contentions between Ohio Awning and neighbor Mark Massari regarding proposed parking lot on the parcel adjacent to his property. Naomi came to present their ‘last best option’ for plans for the lot, however, there was some disagreement about changes made to plans presented at June’s meeting. Our directly affected neighbor would prefer a gate be installed to control entrance to the lot, rather than be open to any traffic. Because the proposed users of this lot are likely to be visitors to businesses and residents of the apartments, it is the position of Naomi that a gate is not feasible. Both parties were asked to further try to compromise on a plan, and we hope to vote for an approval of the site plan at next month’s meeting. Issues on West 18th Place have yet to be further addressed. A scheduled meeting with Councilman McCormack, city officials, and residents was cancelled for a personal emergency, but we anticipate a new meeting time will be scheduled within the next week. There was some discussion about continuing to rotate our meeting space each month between various locations in our area, or setting up a “home base” at St. Augustine. A vote was not held, and further discussion may take place in the future. In other old business, we were given the name and phone number of our local postal deliverer’s supervisor. Her name is Rameka Nimmel and she can be reached at (216) 443-4497. Many of you may not have received the previous two issues of the Tremont West newsletter and other mail. Ms. Nimmel encourages you to report any complaints. Dick Grey has about six reservations to purchase at The Lincoln, and hopes to break ground on the project soon. Be sure to join us at our annual summer picnic on Saturday, August 6, 2016, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Tremont Tap House. There is one action item on the agenda, a vote to take place at the beginning of the picnic on the third Ohio Awning parking lot. This will be our only business at this meeting. For more information on upcoming meetings, minutes and other block club activities visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/LHBlockClub/, or email Chairperson Henry Senyak at [email protected]. You can also call Community Organizer Lindsay Smetana at Tremont West at (216) 575.0920 x 102. As always, we look forward to seeing our neighbors at next month’s meeting!

Mentor Castle Clark/ Holmden Buhrer RowleyHBR-MCC Block Club members gathered at Zion Church on Wednesday, the 6th of July. We began the meeting with neighborhood safety updates and useful information about the RNC and tips for those who would be downtown during it. We also met Barbie Fowler, the owner of a new dog grooming business coming to the neighborhood. Creative Grooming is located at 3154 W. 14th St. They plan to offer both full and self-service dog grooming. The self-service wash will include a place to wash and dry your beloved friend, as well as shampoo. Hours of operation will be from 9:00am-3:00pm, Monday-Saturday. For more information email [email protected]. We ended our meeting with a discussion around future prospective projects including beautifying the Clark Ave. and W. 14th St. intersection through community involvement, requesting patterns to be painted by the city on our crosswalks, and the sidewalk in disrepair on the northeast side of Clark and W. 14th. Our next meeting will be our Annual Summer Cookout on Wednesday, August 3rd from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Clark Bar. Fried chicken and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. It is requested you bring a side or a dessert to the party to share, if possible. If you have questions or would like more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs, Joel Reynolds ([email protected]), Beverly Wurm ([email protected]), or Secretary Sean Heney ([email protected]). Metro NorthOn June 29th around 50 residents and staff of the library and Tremont West attended an interactive design meeting on library renovation with the architects of the South Branch Library project,. The block club was scheduled to host its annual Summer Potluck Party. Thanks to all who brought a dish to share? Burgers and hotdogs were provided. The block club was also to host a special guest, Calley Mersmann, and learn more about the CiCLEvia – open-streets event programming on W. 25th Street coming up on the second weekend of August, September and October. What is ciCLEvia? Over the past several months, the ciCLEvia Planning Team and a coalition of health and sustainability advocates have been hard at work preparing a transformative movement premiering in Cleveland in Summer of 2016. Open streets, also called ciclovias, are family-oriented, neighborhood-based programs that are accessible to all residents. Streets are closed to cars and open to the public, enabling them to walk, jog, bike, and skate in the streets with a focus on health and social engagement. CiCLEvia will debut in the Clark-Fulton, Ohio City, and Tremont neighborhoods along West 25th Street from Wade Avenue to MetroHealth Drive. The series is entirely inclusive: everyone from babies to the elderly and experienced cyclists to residents with wheelchairs will benefit directly from participating in the movement. From salsa dancing and yoga, to biking and family friendly games, ciCLEvia will tap into Cleveland’s imagination and encourage people to be active and connect to their community all while having fun! For more information on ciCLEvia, visit http://ciclevia.com. For more information on our block club and its

North of LiteraryThe North of Literary (NOL) Block Club’s most recent meeting was July 19 at Press Winebar, with the meeting opened by Co-chairs Mike Williams and Sam Vozar. The Co-Chairs confirmed that letters from NOL were sent in support of the Constantino’s Market project on W. 14th, and in support of the Destination Cleveland installation of a Cleveland Script Sign at the Abbey Ave. overlook. Next, the club voted by ballot on the streets most in need of resurfacing as a way of prioritizing. While acknowledging that it may take a long time to have these streets addressed, the club wants to make the need known early, and share the priority list with Councilman McCormack. With the election of Dan Cotter to the Tremont West Development Corp Board, the NOL ex-officio representative position on the Tremont West Board is open. The Co-Chairs asked any member(s) interested in this position to express their interest prior to the next meeting. (ARC)form Design presented plans for a renovation project on W 10th St. After discussion, the block club passed a motion in support, with contingencies. Jill LeMieux provided updates on Tremont Walkabout, and shared volunteer opportunities. The block club discussed plans for the annual picnic, to be organized by Leslie Selig, and asked for volunteers. For more information on our block club and activities, please check out our Facebook page, or contact Co-Chairs, Sam Vozar – [email protected] - and Mike Williams [email protected] – or Community Outreach Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216-575-0920 x106 – [email protected]. Please join us for our next gathering, the annual picnic, on Tuesday, August 16th, 6:30 pm, at “mini Stonhenge” on the corner of W. 7th Street and Literary. Please bring a dish to share – and bring a neighbor to join the celebration! We look forward to seeing you!

South of JeffersonThe July meeting of the South of Jefferson block club held at the Roosevelt Post 58 began with a call to order and introductions. The first order of business was a presentation by architect Michael Horton regarding a project that would replace the rear garage of 781 Starkweather with a new garage and one bedroom carriage house with a deck. Horton provided club members with several examples of photographs of similar structures in the vicinity and a graph showing the height comparisons with other homes on Brayton. One item of interest to the club was an existing tree on the lot with one neighbor suggesting the tree should be removed and another suggesting the tree to be kept. Horton stated that there are no plans to remove the tree. Nine variances were requested to move the project along. The vote was unanimously in favor and a letter will be written by the block club to the Board of Zoning Appeals (BoZA) in favor of the variances being approved. West 5th Street resident, Mendo Veloff, then presented to the block club his plans for an addition to the front of his two-story single family residence that would increase the number of bedrooms and add a bathroom. The addition would extend his home closer to the sidewalk, but would not exceed the setback of multiple adjacent homes. Veloff requested two variances to complete the project. A vote was taken and another unanimous decision was taken to approve his request for a letter of support to BoZA from the block club. SOJ member and Chair of the Tremont Safety Committee, Mike Koski, updated the block club on safety issues. He informed the club of a new program that will create a database of residents’ home security cameras and the contact info needed to provide access to law enforcement in the case that footage is sought for a crime or issue and would have otherwise gone unnoticed or unused by investigating officers. Koski said he would be bringing more information about the voluntary program in the future. Koski also reminded the club about safety audits that are available for homeowners. Koski then updated the club on what to look out for during the Republican National Convention (RNC). Scott Rosenstein then gave the group additional information regarding the RNC and the traffic and general safety issues to be aware of. Randi Zubin then updated the club on the Lucky Park clean-up efforts and encouraged anyone that wanted to help out to contact her. The block club then thanked Mendo Veloff, Greg Kobe and Randi Zubin for their generous donation of mulch for the park. The annual Taste of Tremont came to Professor Avenue in July and was enjoyed by many residents and visitors alike! Block club Co-Chair, Deb Smith, announced that the South of Jefferson party would be held at her residence on Professor Avenue on Sunday, August 21st at 3pm. As in years past, the social gathering would also have the dual purpose of gathering supplies for nearby schools. Scott Rosenstein then updated about the successful campaign to restore the South Branch of Cleveland Public Library on Scranton Road. The meeting was then adjourned followed by a social hour at the Post. Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, August 9th, 7pm, at Post 58 and our Summer Party on Sunday, August 21st at the Smith residence.

Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival The 18th annual Festival is returning to Lincoln Park on Saturday & Sunday, September 17th – 18th, 2016. Following the good news of an award to the Festival by Neighborhood Connections (an award of $4,000 for our Children’s Dance Stage programming), we are hoping for some more good news this summer on our grant application submitted in April to the Ohio Arts Council. Our art juror panel for 2016 (Bruno Cassiano, Amanda Lee, and Jennifer Marks) reviewed artists’ submission in late June, and artists were notified of their acceptance status into the Festival in July. Around 72 visual artists were invited to participate in this year’s Festival. Congratulations to them! Many thanks to art jurors: Bruno, Amanda, and Jennifer for your service and time on behalf of the juried art of the Festival – and thanks to all visual artists who applied! Vendor applications (Community, Cultural, Food) are available through the Festival website – www.tremontartsfestival.com, or by request by e-mail – [email protected] Check them out! Vendors are strongly encouraged to register by Friday, August 12th by 5pm - so please, get those registrations in! For more information on the Festival or registration please contact Festival Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at 216.575.0920 X 106 or e-mail [email protected].

Merchant Street Provisions and Eatery is a market and soon to open full service restaurant operating on the corner of W.11th and Kenilworth in the lovely Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland. We have purchased the property and have done major renovation on the properties that had currently housed a number of restaurants going back to the Miracles space, famous for their potato pancakes. After much work the market space which had previously been the dining room opened serving pressed sandwiches, prepared salads, sides, fresh vegetables and wine and beer which can be taken out or consumed in the light filled space or on the small patio facing Lincoln Park. Partners John McDonnell, previously of Tartine Bistro in Rocky River and the Fulton Bar and Grill in Ohio City, and Kevin and Jean Kilbane of Rocky River, along with chef guidance from Heather Campbell of the Detroit Shoreway area, purchased the property end of last year and have spent lots of time and money resurrecting this space. The market

side fills a void in the Tremont for grab and go food as well as packaged food to take home. The larger space currently nearing completion will showcase a 24 foot bar, a couple of cozy booths and 8 or so tables. It promises to be a warm inviting space with beautiful views from the large front windows of Lincoln Park. The cuisine will be a mix of Mediterranean and California influenced dishes with a large eclectic wine and cocktail menu. Operating hours for the market are now 11:30 am to 8:00 pm M-F; and 11:30 am to 5:00pm Saturday. Closed on Sundays. The restaurant plans to be open from 4:30 to 11 pm M-Thurs; 4:30 to 12 am Fri-Sat; and also closed Sunday.
