CONCRETE & LANDSCAPING

Contracting is in Paul Hamre’s blood. His father was a contractor in North Dakota, and he’s been in the con-tracting business for 38 years. When Paul got his driver license at the age of fourteen, his contractor father gave him his first vehicle, a 1950 Ford pickup with a flat-head Mercury engine. From then on through college, Paul worked every sum-mer for the family painting and construction business where he learned the trades of painting and carpentry and the business of con-tracting.

After earning his BA in Mathematics from the Uni-versity of North Dakota in 1973, Paul moved to Spo-kane where he worked for general contractors until he started his own construction company in 1978 as a framing contractor. In 1981, he and a partner founded Hamre Construction and spent 25 years as successful public works contractors and custom home builders. In 1998, Paul read in a business journal about a great new company in Seattle called UBuildIt and immedi-ately contacted the founder, Chuck Warrender. Within a year, Paul became one of the early UBuildIt System providers, opening the Spokane office to serve eager owner-builders in eastern Washington and north Ida-ho. Since then, Paul has assisted hundreds of home-owners to plan and manage their own home building project.

UBuildIt uses a two phase approach for their cus-tomers. Phase one is a feasibility study. Paul helps you plan your whole project and evaluate how much mon-

ey your ideas/ plans will actually cost. Phase two is all about the execution of your plan.

99.9% of UBuildIt’s cli-ents successfully finish

the projects they set out to accomplish. Compared to a national average of 35% owner/ builders finishing their projects without help from a consulting compa-ny like UBuildIt, that’s huge! Many potential owner/ builders are clueless about what goes into a giant un-dertaking like building their own home, and every 12-

15 years, the cost to build the same thing doubles.

UBuildIt provides its cli-ents with the guidance and information they need to make a good decision. They provide an opportunity for people to manage their own project. After all, you will build a far better home for yourself than anyone you

hire to do it. At this year’s Home and Garden Show, Paul will be holding a seminar titled Plan Right to Build or Remodel Your Home (Friday 1pm, Saturday 2pm, Sunday 2pm). This free seminar will go over phase one of the UBuildIt process. He’ll walk you through how to fund a project, evaluate a property and develop a set of plans. For more information about UBuildIt, visit their booth at this year’s show, call 509-326-0544 or visit www.ubuildit.com

In the not-so-distant past, home improvement proj-ects all but came to a halt, as homeowners were wary about investing any money into fixer-uppers. But the tides have changed dramatically in recent months, and homeowners are again ready and willing to invest big dollars into home renovations.

Home renovations are typically exciting, as home-owners get to see the visions of their dream homes come to light right before their very eyes. Turning an outdated bathroom into a modern oasis or an empty basement into the ultimate man cave strengthens the sense of attachment homeowners have with their homes.

But few home renovation projects go from start to finish without experiencing a few bumps in the road along the way. Such bumps can be difficult to handle for homeowners working on their first renovation projects, but there are many ways for novices to navi-gate the sometimes murky waters of home improve-ment projects and come out relatively unscathed on the other end, where a newly renovated home awaits.• Plan well and know what to expect. When working

with contractors, get all agreements in writing and spell out exactly what you desire in a home reno-vation. Photo references can help guide contractors and architects. Ask for the full picture of what can be expected with the work, from demolition to the punch list. Knowing what lies ahead can keep you grounded throughout the project.

• Discuss work each day and set payment schedules. Make payments contingent on work completed. This can help keep contractors on schedule. Paying for all work upfront leaves homeowners at a disad-vantage, as it does not provide incentive for workers to be timely and efficient. Check in with workers to get daily progress reports.

• Have reasonable expectations. A renovation proj-ect may exceed its budget and take longer than ini-tially expected. Understanding that these potential setbacks might be part of the process will make it easier to handle them when the foreman speaks to you about any issues that arise.

• Accept the mess. Construction work is messy. There’s no way to maintain a pristine house when contractors are entering and exiting all day. Dust is bound to be generated, and tools can fill up rooms. A home in disarray can be stressful, but continue to visualize the end result and the mess won’t bother you so much.

• Establish a contingency plan. Bathrooms and kitchen renovations are typically the most disruptive home improvement projects. Going without a kitchen can make it difficult to enjoy meals at home, while a bathroom remodel may require you to navigate water shutoffs. If your project is scheduled to take several months, establish a contingency plan to deal with the consequences of your renovation project. Speak with family members about using some of their home amenities, and prepare and freeze meals in advance so you can reheat them later on when you don’t have access to your stove.

• Plan your escape. Sometimes the constant work and mess of construction is too much to bear. Afford yourself time away by visiting relatives or staying at a hotel. Even a single night away can provide the relief you need.

A home that is undergoing a remodel can be a less than comfortable environment. But homeowners who have never before lived through a renovation proj-ect can take several steps to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Asbestos Concerns with Renovation ProjectsLisa Woodard, Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency Friday, 4pmWith renovation projects on the rise, so is the risk of asbestos exposure. Everybody knows that asbestos can be dangerous. Asbestos is a natural mineral widely used in building construction materials and products. Left undisturbed and in good condition, these products can perform as intended. Problems arise when they de-teriorate, fall apart, or are disturbed during demolition and renovation work. When this happens, microscopic fibers become airborne, are easily inhaled, and settle deep into the lungs. To protect public health from ex-posure to asbestos, activities such as demolition and renovation of buildings, homes and other structures must comply with asbestos regulations. Lisa Wood-ward, with the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency, will explain and answer all asbestos related concerns and policies. Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (Spokane Clean Air) is one of seven local air pollution control agencies in Washington established under the 1967 Clean Air Washington Act. They are responsible for enforcing federal, state and local air pollution regu-lations. A five-member Board of Directors establishes the policies and oversees the operations of the agency. To contact the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency call 509-477-4727 or visit www.SpokaneCleanAir.org

Spring cleaning blah, blah, blah. Winter is nearly over, and it’s time to fling open the windows to let the spring sunshine in. That sunlight, however, illumi-nates all of the grimy buildup in our winter hideouts. Here are some nifty tips on deep cleaning your home!

1. Getting stains out of your microfiber couch with rubbing alcohol. Seriously, all you need is rubbing alcohol, a white sponge and a white bristle brush to get your couch looking as good as new. Us-ing white products is important so that color dyes don’t bleed onto your fab-ric.

2. Dusting off your fan blades with a pillowcase. Quit wiping your dust into the air, or even worse, your face. Using a pillowcase keeps it contained.

3. Nix the dust from your blinds. When a duster just won’t do the job, using vinegar is sure to eliminate the excess gunk. Dilute one part vinegar to two parts water.

4. Scrub a dub the oven. Is your oven grossing you out every time you open it? If you don’t have a self-cleaning oven, all you need is 5 Tbsp of baking soda, 5 drops of dish soap and 4 Tbsp of vinegar. Mix it into a paste and coat the inside of your oven. Close it up, let it sit for 15 minutes and then scrub, scrub, scrub!

5. Waxing your stovetop. After you finally get your stovetop clean, wax it up with some car wax to prevent crazy scrubbing in the future. Note: this should only be used with gas stovetops or non-glass top electric stovetops.

6. Cleaning the dreaded microwave. You can clean your microwave in just 5 minutes! Take 1 cup of

water and 1 Tbsp of vinegar and microwave for 5 minutes. Then, wipe it down with a paper towel or sponge.

7. Keeping your mat-tress fresh. Often for-gotten, freshening up your mattress can make a world of differ-ence for your night’s sleep. Use some baking soda and lavender es-sential oil. Use a flour sifter to sprinkle evenly and drizzle essential oil to desired aroma. Let it

sit for a few hours and then vacuum up the excess baking soda.

8. Give that bathtub a once over. Using a tub scrub made from peppermint oil, baking soda and liquid soap will ensure that your bathroom smells great.

9. Prevent oily dust buildup in the kitchen. A little vegetable oil on your cleaning rag helps wipe up sticky dust that finds its way into your kitchen. It seems counterintuitive, but it works!

10. Lifting those pesky carpet stains. Don’t have a spot/ steam cleaner? Use your iron and a clean towel to lift those stains and then scrub!

After our relatively warm winter and with spring on the horizon, local home-owners are chomping at the bit to get their spring projects underway. Personal gardens have grown in popularity in the recent years, and the most important part

of any garden is the soil. Whether you’re grow-

ing prize-winning flowers or a simple

vegetable g a r d e n in the

ground, raised

bed or by the pot, one way to ensure rich soil is by vermicomposting.

Many are familiar with the concept of compost, and the added benefits of in-corporating it into your daily practices, but going one step further with vermi-composting can make a big difference. Vermicompost is the process of com-posting using various worms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable and food waste, bedding ma-terials and vermicast. Let the worms do the work and cut the composting time in half. According to local experts Marlé

Worm Growers, regular Earthworms simply won’t do. They will die if you add them to an indoor worm bin. Com-posting worms, or Red Worms, are spe-cialized surface dwellers (not burrow-ers), typically living in very rich organic matter such as manure, compost piles or leaf litter.

Starting your own worm bin at home is easier than you might think. As long as you give your worms a little bit of at-tention, you’ll have a win-win situation. Your worms will be happy, recycling will be easy, and your garden soil will be enhanced! Although you can release your worms directly into your garden, lawn or compost piles (once the active thermal cycle is over), an easy way of learning about the process is by keeping a worm bin directly in your home. I can hear you asking – “But what about the smell?” – stop by Marlé Worm Grow-ers’ booth and smell for yourself, they’ll have an actual working worm bin for you to examine.

Red Wigglers are the most common worm used in vermicomposting. These worms can live as long as four years if treated well. Generally though, in na-

ture, worms live and die within the same year due to uncontrolled events. Your worm bin creates a safe environ-ment, so a deceased worm will be hard to find. Marlé Worm Growers also carry European Night Crawlers, another vi-able choice for your compost bin. They are great composters, eating the larger food particles (Red Worms tend to like the smaller food particles) and are also tolerant of most conditions.

Marlé Worm Growers is a family-owned and run business comprised of Les Wood, Jeff Wood and Kimberly Ju-lian with dedication to increasing pub-lic knowledge about vermiculture. Ini-tially an internet based company, 2013 brought expansion to their marketing, which allowed them into local venues. Marlé Worm Growers offers “green” based products that they have either grown, harvested, created or researched. To learn more about vermiculture, Marlé Worm Growers can be found at their ex-panded store at 24411 E. Joseph Ave., on-line at www.MarleWormGrowers.com or give them a call at 509-928-3995. They are also happy to answer any questions at this year’s Home and Garden Show!
