Welcome to Treloar’s Training Directory

Treloar's is a centre of excellence in the education and care of students with special

needs.

We provide specialist training opportunities, professional expertise and knowledge to those

who educate, work with, or care for individuals with additional needs.

The professionals delivering the training work with the students at Treloar’s. They have a

wealth of knowledge and understanding of the difficulties faced not only by the young

people themselves, but also of the education and health and social care team supporting

them.

We deliver training to schools, domiciliary, residential health and social care providers and

activity providers as well as commercial organisations. In the past year this has included

More House School, Ingfield Manor School, Richmond Continuing Care, Parity for

Disability and extends to organisations such as the Home-Start North West Hants ans

British School Al Khubairat and Srixon Sports (Europe) Ltd.

Working Creatively with Disabled Children and Adolescents Conference 2016 Accreditation CPD certified

A one day CPD conference is aimed at counsellors, psychotherapists, CAMHs clinicians and other professionals supporting children and young people.

Aims and objectives

Our specialist team of counsellors/psychotherapists provide therapeutic support to students aged 5-24 with complex physical disability, many of whom also have low cognitive functioning, learning disabilities, and/or little or no verbal communication. This course will aim to provide an insight into working with this specialist group of clients, combining theory with specific, creative interventions to support communication and therapeutic working. To include:

Some historical context and the way disabilities have been changing and the impact on psychotherapeutic working.

Disabled identity and culture, and the wider system Common themes when working with disability Exploring our own fantasies, conceptions and projections around

disability Working creatively with disabled clients, including non-verbal children

Speaker Elayna Clark MBACP (accred), BA Hons, PG Dip; Head of Counselling, Treloar’s Elayna has recently joined Treloar’s and has 16+ years of delivering counselling and therapeutic work with children age 2+ and young people in a diverse range of settings including FE/HE. Elayna has experience as a specialist CAMHs therapist providing broad based creative work and attachment based support to children in care/post adoption, psycho-educational and dyadic work with parents, and professional consultation and clinical supervision. In addition to this Elayna has provided presentations and training workshops for allied professionals from CAMHs, Children’s Services, and Education, and also directly for young people. Elayna brings together experience gained from training in counselling and psychotherapy, systemic thinking, creative and play techniques, attachment based work, drama, dance and voice work, on-line counselling, and counselling supervision.

Who should apply

The Level 3 Diploma for Residential childcare is specifically designed for those wanting to work in residential childcare with children in a care role. New residential care workers will need to achive this qualification within two years of employment.

Aims and objectives

By the end of the programme, learners will gain the knowledge and understanding and be able to demonstrate all aspects of providing care of children in a residential setting.

Programme This course comprises of achievement of 61 credits overall. 53 credits from 16 mandatory units and a minimum of 3 optional units providing a minimum of 8 credits. There is a requirement for the candidate to undertake additional reading to inform the quality of these assignments and broaden their understanding of the subject matter. Learners may progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) (4340-51)

The course is designed for those working with children and young people with severe learning difficulties. It is designed for SENCOs, teachers, teaching / learning support assistants and a range of other staff working within special schools, resourced units, mainstream schools and FE colleges. This practical training programme will provide new approaches and strategies to help children and young people maximise their speech ,language and communication potential.

Aims and objectives

Trainers Helen Goodenough; Head of Residential Services, Treloar’s. Jane Clarke; Deputy Head of College, Treloar’s. Helen has worked in social care settings since 1986 and has experience of working for national organisations such as SCOPE and Mencap. She has been managing services since 1994 and has worked at Treloar’s since 1998 with both children and young adults. Helen has held the post of Head of Residential Services since 2006 being proactive in facilitating a person centred approach and active participation for students in all aspects of their daily lives. She is a passionate advocate of mental health, and trained as a Mental Health First Aid trainer in 2008. Jane is qualified in both general and mental health nursing and her interest and inspiration in the field of mental health arose from her work at a large psychiatric hospital. This led Jane to become a trained Mental Health Nurse and to work with young people affected by substance misuse. She has also taught a course in a further education college to disenchanted young people. Since then she has moved on to teach young people with physical and learning disabilities, becoming a Mental Health First Aid trainer.

Dawn has also tutored learners at Basingstoke College of Technology and is a MHFA Youth accredited trainer. Lorna joined Treloar’s in July 2013 following a full career in the Home Office, (Policing), where she was a trainer for Student Officers, she also worked on numerous national Equality projects including the DNA database and EIA’s. She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Equality and Diversity, CIPD, Cert Ed. Lorna is also a BSL signer.

Aims and objectives

This unit comprises of a taught training session, self directed learning and

submission of a written assignment. This unit aims to enable the learner to understand the causes of infection and common illness that may result as a consequence. To understand the difference between infection and colonisation, and pathogenic and non pathogenic organisms, and the areas of the infection and the types caused by different organisms. In addition the learner will understand the methods of transmission; the conditions needed for organisms to grow, the ways infection enter the body and key factors that may lead to infection occurring. This unit comprises of a taught training session, self directed learning and

This unit explores the meaning of learning disability and considers issues linked with learning disability support. These include an awareness of how the attitudes and beliefs of others affect individuals who have learning disabilities. The unit introduces themes of inclusion, human rights, advocacy, empowerment and active participation and also considers the central place of communication in working with individuals who have learning disabilities. Aims and objectives

This unit comprises of a taught training session, self directed learning and

submission of a written assignment. This unit promotes a positive, person centred approach to risk taking for individuals with disabilities and emphasises the importance of working in partnership to support individuals to take risks. It provides the opportunity to reflect on difficulties and dilemmas commonly encountered when addressing issues of risk, in the context of the legal and policy frameworks. Objectives: Understand that individuals with disabilities have the same right as everyone

else to take risks Understand the importance of a positive, person centred approach to risk

Trainer Pretty Jetwani of Sight Plus (Visual Impairment Services) Pretty is a highly specialist Orthoptist with 25 years experience of services in vision rehabilitation. She is a full member of the British & Irish Orthoptic Society and the Health & Care Professions Council. Pretty’s experience has included design, organisation, and implementation of low vision services, training and lecturing. A key aspect to her meeting the needs of people with visual impairment and additional disabilities is by working as part of multi-disciplinary teams. She has worked in different types of organisations i.e. schools, colleges, employment services, hospitals, residential settings, social services and voluntary sector. Terms and conditions 1. Payment:

1.1 All courses are subject to 20% VAT unless otherwise advised. 1.2 Places may be booked provisionally by telephone. 1.3 All places will be reserved upon Treloar’s receiving a signed booking form,

by post, email or fax. 1.4 Places can only be secured upon receipt by Treloar’s of the full payment. 1.5 Payment by cheque to “Treloar Enterprises Ltd”. 1.6 Treloar’s reserves the right to re-allocate the place to another delegate if

course fees are not paid. 2. Cancellation by clients:

2.1 Should the client wish to cancel their attendance, Treloar’s must receive notification 14 days prior to the course commencement date.

2.2 If a booking is cancelled within 14 days or if the delegate fails to attend the training course, course fees will not be refunded.

2.3 All refunds due to client cancellation will be subject to a £10 administration charge.

2.4 Substitution of the original course applicant for another person can be made with the consent of Treloar’s. Treloar’s must be notified of any substitution before the course start date. A £10 administration charge will be made for any substitution.

3. Cancellation by Treloar’s:

3.1 Every attempt will be made to ensure that courses run as advertised, but in the event of a cancellation, Treloar’s will notify the client as soon as practically possible.

3.2 Treloar’s will notify the client 14 days prior to the commencement of the course where numbers failed to reach a workable minimum for the course to be run.

3.3 In the unlikely event of a course being cancelled, clients will be offered the choice of one of the following: 3.3.1 Alternative date for the same course 3.3.2 Full refund of the course fee paid 3.3.3 Credit to utilise on an alternative course

4. Booking Forms: A signature on the booking form is a commitment to payment of the full course fee and signifies agreement with the Terms and Conditions contained herein.
