Looking Forward...Haskill Basin Forever

What are the benefi ts of protecting this land? • Protecting and preserving the water quality and quantity that provides the primary source of drinking

water for the City’s municipal water system• Providing year-round public access to outdoor recreation lands used for biking, hiking, skiing and hunting• Protecting important habitat for wildlife• Perpetuating sustainable timber management and local jobs • Safeguarding the scenic backdrop of downtown Whitefi sh

Haskill Basin has been treasured by many for years, and the opportunity to recreate on these lands has been allowed as a neighborly accommodation by F.H. Stoltze Land & Lumber Company, the oldest family owned and operated private timber company in Montana. Although many know Haskill Basin for its combination of trails and roads for hiking, hunting, running and skiing, Haskill Basin also serves as the municipal water supply for the City of Whitefi sh and is known for its rich biological diversity and quality wildlife habitat.

The ProjectThe opportunity to permanently protect water quality, wildlife and recre-ation in Haskill Basin is now a possibility. Stoltze is willing to sell a 3,020 acre conservation easement providing the community an incredible opportunity. This permanent conservation easement negotiated by The Trust for Public Land will be held by MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks and will prohibit future development and other community and wildlife benefi ts.

Funding Haskill BasinThe Haskill Basin project was ranked the top priority project by the Forest Legacy Program, with $7 million dollars earmarked for the project. An additional $2 million was awarded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Habitat Conservation Plan, which provides funding for endangered species habitat protection through the Endangered Species Act.

The City of Whitefi sh is committed to funding the remaining $8 million for the purchase of the conser-vation easement. In partnership with the City, we plan to create a trail connecting downtown to Big Mountain with a trailhead easily accessed from Res-ervoir Road. We are excited to establish this vital link and grow the Whitefi sh Trail.

FOSTERING EDUCATIONWhitefi sh Trail Learning Pavilion

Over 400 people participated in educational activities on the Whitefi sh Trail in 2014 including over 150 students. Participants learned about topics including forestry, fi eld sketching, botany and mushrooms.

We are proud of the growth of our educational programs this year and appreciate the eff orts of WLP Education Specialist Kim Corette and the support from community partners. With support from the Whitefi sh Community Foundation, we are excited to expand educational opportunities in 2015 to include additional school fi eld trips, winter and summer guided hikes, youth activities, an adult speaker series, and trail fi tness programs.

Thank you to our 2014 education partners and volunteers...

In partnership with the Rotary Club of Whitefi sh, sponsors and volun-teers, Phase I of the Whitefi sh Trail Learning Pavilion is complete. The pavilion off ers the community a wonderful outdoor gathering place. Phase II will start Spring 2015 with sign installation and construction of interpretive trails and natural playscapes.

This year we will continue off ering broad-based educational programs, an expanded guided hiking series for adults and children, as well as school fi eld trips focused on natural history, fi tness, physical science, and forestry management.

GROWING RECREATIONBuilding a Community Asset

To date, the City of Whitefi sh and Whitefi sh Legacy Partners have built over 26 miles of natural-surface trail and 7 trailheads. Locals and visitors have a variety of easy-to-locate and easy-to-navigate recreational opportunities on the Whitefi sh Trail. In 2015 we will expand the trails in Beaver Lakes and add the historic Spencer Mountain to the trail system.

Beaver Lakes 2015WLP received a $75K TIIP grant from the Montana Offi ce of Tourism (MTOT) for 2015 trail construction providing recreational access to Dollar Lake, Little Beaver Lake, and Beaver Lake, trailhead improvements at Dollar Lake, and interpretive trails at the Learning Pavilion. This funding from MTOT shows the Whitefi sh Trail is truly a project of regional signifi cance that provides continued economic development for our community while reinforcing our mission of conservation, recreation and education. Three miles of new trail accessing beautiful lake destinations will open in the Fall 2015.

Spencer Mountain 2015We will piece together an 8-mile single-track connector loop circumnavigating the Spencer Mountain area, including two trailheads and directional signs with support from a Montana Recreational Trail Program grant. The Whitefi sh Trail at Spencer is diff erent than other WT sections as the route utilizes historic trails overlooking the Stillwater River valley. Concurrently the local mountain bike group, Flathead Fat Tires, is improving the adrenaline-fi lled freeride trails adjacent to the WT.

The Spencer Mountain timber sale is in progress and further WT improvements will start after logging is complete. Construc-tion of a new, larger permanent trailhead at Twin Bridges and minor trail reroutes will take place in 2016-17. As the paved bike path expands west, Spencer will enhance the overall value of our community’s recreation assets.

Our Financial Trail...

VolunteersOur Adopt-A-Trail program had an incredible fi rst year with all seven segments adopted. Crews made a three year commitment to annually maintain and patrol their section of trail. Many individuals also contributed time to clear trees, participated in com-munity service days, completed visitor use monitor-ing, supported trail events, assisted with education outings, and maintained trail amenities.
